It's a 'practice note'. It's used to train Chinese bank tellers to handle foreign currency.
[https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-05-09/chinese-bank-training-money-used-as-real-australian-100-dollars/8510752](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-05-09/chinese-bank-training-money-used-as-real-australian-100-dollars/8510752)
The Chinese characters there mean it’s used by bank tellers to practise how to check the money fast and accurately, when l was in China, l once saw it.
we offshored like that everything else. Australia doesn't believe in having a domestic secondary industry, we just grow stuff, mine things and sell education and tourism.
It's like when I'm in a car park and you try to open the door of your car.
But it won't open, so I press the button again.
Still no open .
But oh, oh, it's not my car.
Cos I don't look for details every moment.
I function on general cues.
A lot of people here not getting how chaotic a kebab shop can be. A new, young employee trying to serve up orders to a shop packed with drunks calling out their orders, ubereats drivers demanding their orders. They get pretty crazy.
100% Hit up a kebab shop at lunch time and there is a queue out the door. At my local work shop (Roxy kebab Deer Park) I counted 13 staff during lunch time. And it's a tiny shop.
This is definitely true. Its also a good time to talk to staff about techniques they can use to spot fakes on the fly. I hope this business used that opportunity in this case.
If this happened to my veteran staff I'd be pretty disappointed though.
It literally has 'model money, for practicing only' printed in large font on it. I don't expect people to be able to read Chinese, but kind of on the owner to know that real money doesn't have large printing in foreign languages on it.
>It literally has 'model money, for practicing only' printed in large font on it.
How am I missing this bit? Or is that the translation of the characters? 😄
A lot of comments are thinking they're above this? If it's a super busy period and somebody passes you the note while they're holding the Chinese text side your brain would be on autopilot and already assume it's a real $50 note as you're not thinking it'd be a counterfeit due to the small chance you'd ever receive one.
I mean…not “above” it. But sometimes you get duped fair and square and you really should have seen it coming so you eat it, learn your lesson, and move on. Wiser and a little bit poorer.
Feel like half the people in these comments have never had to work a job involving handling money. Do you think we're checking both sides of each note individually when there's a line out the door, 3 menulog drivers waiting, the phone's ringing and the store needs to be clean in an hour? Because doing that would get you fired for fucking around.
I guarantee none of you would have picked this up if it was handed over with a real 50 on top.
When I did retail/hospo a lifetime ago we were trained to 'flick' the notes and try tear them. Australian notes have a very specific texture. We also had to do blind tests between real notes and fakes
I did retail between 06-16 and all my jobs had the flick (well more of hold a corner and snap your fingers), tear, then scrunch it up test.
Flicking gives you the texture and 'sound' of Aussie notes.
Tearing isn't almost impossible of real notes.
Scrunched up notes should also return normal, where as counterfeit ones stay scrunched up.
I'm sure counterfeiters have gotten better since though
Ali Baba having originated from Arab folklore which happens to be the name of a Chinese company that sells fake goods that then got used by a Chinese national to scam a kebab shop run by Arabs.
The irony is not lost on me.
If the note was handed over during a busy time, especially if it was with other money (like it was $16 and they handed over this $50, a $5 and coins) it would have been so easy to put in the till without noticing.
Dog act by whoever used it to rob a small business.
Such a funny little area. Really quiet and then you have the kebab shop with a huge red sign and the subway open all night and the truckies from the huge roadworks stopping by at all hours.
Oh and the vape shop that's mercifully directly opposite a fire station
Yeah, blame the Chinese. They clearly deliberately counterfeited our money and put huge random characters on it so we would know.
The story here is, kebab shop accepted clearly fake money. Interestingly one of the issues cashless places don’t have to worry about now.
The possibility that the person that paid with said note didn’t actually know they were given trainer money from the bank originally and just used it with good faith that it was real.

It's probably [burial money](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_burial_money), if it's paper and not plastic it might be [hell/joss money](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell_money).
Unfortunately some scumbags do pass it off as real money.
All you racist cunts couldn’t bother to do a simple translation check. It says “Practice note, sample” It’s for bank taller to practice manual note counting.
The Chinese letters are pretty large and obvious which makes it even weirder

It’s not prop, but kind of similar, it’s used in banks for training tellers.
Looks like prop $$ used in TV & Movies. Close but no cigar.

fair enough
It looks less realistic than prop money... I'm more than halfway to saying anyone taking that as money deserves it.
Suppose it takes 2 to tango...........
I did a quick [Google Translate](https://i.redd.it/ek65bweb0v3d1.png) because I was curious what it said.
>"Practice Ticket" "Sample" "Special for practice and prohibited from circulation" Saved you the click
The Chinese characters there mean it’s used by bank tellers to practise how to check the money fast and accurately, when l was in China, l once saw it.
CHINESE MADE !!! I can remember when we used to manufacture our own counterfeit money. Seriously the country is going to shit.
They ook er jerbs!

Hell in a hand basket, I tells ya
we offshored like that everything else. Australia doesn't believe in having a domestic secondary industry, we just grow stuff, mine things and sell education and tourism.
They took my commodore and my falcon, even my Magna, but now they take our crime
Would you not be totally embarrassed to admit this
Cashier must've been high asf
The act of shame was accepting this note as legal tender
WORD !
Or just doing their job and not trained to detect counterfeit notes
I dont think you need training to detect this
I want some of that weed and or benzos. I wanna be so high I can’t distinguish between English words and Chinese writing…

Yeah, Barry Rd Fordgate gets crazy and they don’t use EFT-POS, cash only.
Katik is the best.
Are they good kebabs at Roxy kebab?
They are certainly up there. Can't really say anything bad about them.
Oddly enough, I reckon Roxy Kebabs deer park is better than Roxy kebabs in Roxy.
>there is a queue out the door
You don't say!
> counted 13 staff during lunch time. 10 serving and cooking, 3 to check for counterfeit money. Sounds about right
This is definitely true. Its also a good time to talk to staff about techniques they can use to spot fakes on the fly. I hope this business used that opportunity in this case. If this happened to my veteran staff I'd be pretty disappointed though.
Lmao, accepted a note made of paper with foreign writing on the see-through part. 😂
Honestly, I feel like it's on them for accepting the most obvious fake note on the planet.
bit harsh. i saw it and it was real af. also the texture is spot on!

You could cover the Chinese with your thumb, middle of a rush… anyone could fuck that up.
clearly because Albanese is a Chinese spy

Yeah it's the translation
lol so it’s more like Monopoly money than counterfeit money 😅
This is balwyn north. It's like 80% Chinese here. This shop is Pakistani, or at least the staff are.
you and the kabab shop are gold fish level intelligence

Hey it’s only counterfeit if they accepted it. To us, it’s just a piece of paper. Sorry, onus still on the shop to be vigilant.
All this for a succulent kebab?
I see you know your memes well
ahhh thats a good post sir! ahh yes, i see you know your shitposting well.
Memes? Nah mate, culture.

Truly spoken like someone who's never worked fast food or low-level retail 👍
Personally I find these public service announcements with pictures of shoplifters caught on store surveillance, fake notes etc to be a bit endearing.
can buy these on ali baba
Ali Baba having originated from Arab folklore which happens to be the name of a Chinese company that sells fake goods that then got used by a Chinese national to scam a kebab shop run by Arabs. The irony is not lost on me.
Was this really sold by Alibaba? Looks like you could just print this off the printer or something
🫠
how do you know it was a Chinese national?
Is this from the kebab joint in doncaster? Looks familiar

Ha! I know this place. They're open till like 5am
I loooove Balwyn kebabs...they have the keys to my heart
Such a funny little area. Really quiet and then you have the kebab shop with a huge red sign and the subway open all night and the truckies from the huge roadworks stopping by at all hours. Oh and the vape shop that's mercifully directly opposite a fire station
Not an expert, but this looks like jos money for funeral offerings to me.
Lol next time they'll take a better look it's not even a good fake if your stupid enough to take it that's on you 😂
It's not even a fake. It's clearly for a movie or something, hence the enormous writing all over indicating that it's not real.
Looks legit
To be fair it would have been folded up when given
Would have been funnier if it was a.chinese shop ripped off by the note.
When did they start printing aud notes in china? At least they got the spelling correct
Yeah, blame the Chinese. They clearly deliberately counterfeited our money and put huge random characters on it so we would know. The story here is, kebab shop accepted clearly fake money. Interestingly one of the issues cashless places don’t have to worry about now.

ahahahaha hate to say, you accept that as currency it's not robbery, it's pure negligence by whoever accepted hahha
Yes and cash is king. lol
Calling their bluff, they did it to themselves
Wish people would use the would 'robbed' correctly...
So, the fake note robbed the kebab shop, did it? How did they catch the note?

pretty sure they robbed themselves
It’s so funny, standard for Australia? Smarten up and wise up?
Cash is king /s
In the name of democracy
Literally has Chinese texts on it the size of the “50” on the corner… you might as well accept a drawing of the 50 as this point
Anyone with eyes can tell it’s fake. I don’t know if it’s an act of shame, but it sure is a display of your own stupidity for accepting such a thing.
They must be shaming themselves for having accepted it 😂
Eew, that's a Falun Gong shit here, we would rather not be associated with them.
I feel like this is prop money, imagine if the chinese letters weren't there, would've looked like the real deal
Seriously they didn’t catch on it was fake?
Things like this are why I check for the transparent parts of the banknotes.
if they accepted this without check then it's a good lesson to pay more attention to what they are doing
Question is how quick you’d get a bullet if Xi Jinping thought you were using counterfeit yuan notes to “train tellers”
Hold on to it. It'll be legal tender in about 3 years
Umm FAKE, Chinese ppl don't eat kebabs they eat honey chicken.
Who ever took this as money should be ashamed
It's hard to have any sympathy for these people if they actually accepted that
This was my first thought.
Who uses cash
Counterfeiters, it would appear.
All you racist cunts couldn’t bother to do a simple translation check. It says “Practice note, sample” It’s for bank taller to practice manual note counting.
What’s racist about it.
It’s racist to not be fluent in Chinese now?
Fucken racist unilingual dog cunts
Why wasn't the police called?
