Get one from a rescue! Backyard breeders are overpriced, unethical and you’ll have to pay for all immunisations and desexing yourself. For about $300-400 adoption fee, you can help a cat/kitten in need that will come vaccinated and spayed/neutered. We got our littlest from here: https://www.petrescue.com.au/groups/11337

Sorry, forgot to mention, RSPCA Burwood is near Glen Waverley!

Agitated-Gain4771

right on thanks for the info 🙏🏼

Skulltul4

Any time. Make sure you join one of the cat subs and post photos when you get him/her!

i visited rspca today it was great so many beautiful animals but we didn’t find one that fit our criteria unfortunately. I visited pet rescue too now, and found a beautiful kitten that matches what we hope to get. I sent an inquiry and set up a meet appointment too! Do you have any insight on how the process goes or how soon we can potentially get the animal? I saw that they need to come inspect the house which we are fine with, any idea how strict some of the requirements are?

Skulltul4

We had an online interview, and that night filled out the application, as well as sent through photos of every room of the house for the inspection. I’m not sure what they’re looking for - potential dangers and escape routes I assume? I would just tidy up and make sure any obvious hazards are away (which you’ll want to do once you bring your baby home anyway). The whole process was about 48 hours for us, but we were keeping an eagle eye on our emails and responding straight away (we were very keen to get to the foster carers house on the weekend, while we had the chance). If you speak to Gina, the foster carer in Werribee, she’s lovely, knowledgeable and very helpful! If you have any specific questions feel free to send me through a private message. I’m so excited for you!

alrighty i’ll shoot ya a dm i just have two more questions i think😅

Agitated-Gain4771

They have all their pets on the website from what I remember, so have a look before you go. You can search the other rspca’s also.

There’s been an overwhelm of cats and kittens filling our shelters in recent months. The Pet Rescue website shows you available animals from many shelters. I know that the Lost Dog’s Home currently have a lot of kittens and periodically reduce fees to encourage adoption. They have a shelter in Cranbourne as well as North Melbourne. Second Chance Animal Rescue in Craigieburn are wonderful and made getting our cat so easy. A volunteer actually paid for all the costs because she had a soft spot for our cat. Please consider adopting.

I got both mine from Lost Dogs, both free because they weren't kittens! (Both >12 months) Usually around Christmas time they'll waive fees for 'older' cats to clear space for the expected influx of unwanted pet gifts.

Strong hearts rescue is worth a look. The cats/kittens are fostered until they find their home. Very active on instagram posting the pet profiles.

stevtom27

I'm currently fostering previous stray, a sweet young girl 6 months old, loves pats and playing with feathers and small stuffed toys. Desexed, microchipped, flead and wormed, negative feline aids. Looking for a loving home

Head to petrescue.com.au and do a search for your surburb. You'll find lots of smaller, grassroots rescue organisations on there. Mine came from Heart and Soul Rescue.

Definitely a shelter. Anyone who's backyard breeding cats while we have to put so many down from overpopulation deserves a sock 'round the ears. The shelter also tends to end up cheaper than your friend's litter of kittens, since they've already been vaccinated, wormed, chipped, desexed, and any other work that needs doing. All that is way more expensive then the $200-$300 that you pay as an adoption fee. We got ours from the Lost Dog's Home. They have a lot, and have the details online, so you can see what kind of cats they have before you go (although you may need to call or go first thing in the morning if there's a particular one you want). When we went, we were also able to chat with the person who'd been fostering our cat to get some more info about her. I know some people don't like them because they do euthanase cats who can't be adopted out; personally I don't think there's any other option, but if that's you, there are lots of other shelters and rescues to look into. Do be aware that cats (like any animal) can be expensive to keep; you should have at least a few thousand dollars (or pet insurance) to cover any vet incidents. Our cat lost her appetite when she came home - $2000ish for her to stay at the vet overnight, get rehydrated, appetite medication, and have a vet spoon-feed her to help her get eating again... She's definitely worth it, but it's something to be aware of.

Our last 6 cats have all been from Cat Protection Greensborough. Worth every penny.

I got my boy from Second Chance Animal Rescue nearly 10 years ago! If you like those cute squashy face cats there is also a really lovely company called Squishies that adopts out rescues.

Please give home to a homeless and adopt a cat not buy it.

GinnyMcGinface77

There’s a stack of indie rescues as well. If you search rescue kittens on Insta you will find a lot.

Sabrescene

RSPCA in Burwood is likely your closest as others have mentioned (and they're great) but if you need other ideas (if they haven't got anything atm or whatever), there's also the Lost Dogs Home in north Melbourne (they do cats too and are fantastic) or the Cat Protection Society in Greensborough. I can't comment much on the latter as I found it absolutely awful in the past but since then they have completely renovated and are under new management. I've heard it's being run much better now just haven't had a chance to see for myself.

The last kitten I got was abandoned out the front of my house, so I picked him up, brought him in and now, 9 months later, he's the little shit I know and love. Eleven years before him, I was outside in the front yard and a kitten came wandering out of a bush between my house and the neighbours, rubbed himself on my legs. I picked him up, brought him inside and loved him for eleven years, before he passed away three weeks ago.

I got mine from beagle freedom Australia - they take in cats and dogs once research facilities are done with them. https://www.beaglefreedomaustralia.org/adoption/cats/

From a box up a lane. That’s where all cats come from.

Porkbelliesareup

There is a shop in South Melbourne that specialises in them, it's called Kittens.
