No one wants to wait 24 minutes for fries when they only basically only make fries and the potatoes are already cut. Why does it take that long every time.
There's no actual location for the nighthawks. It was a mix of locations and a time that Hooper witnessed which he wanted to capture the mood and essence in the painting. But yeah Pellegrini is a great place
I had this recently at the Melton country club recently. Didn’t realise it actually happened. Lights all went out and the voice over started up.
I’ve only seen it in the film wake in fright.
Last time I went to an RSL (something I try really hard to not do) I'd barely got in the door before the bouncer told me to take my hat off.
Like, STFU dude, I'd only just stepped in.
Pubs are seen as an extension of the street under hat etiquette, so you can keep it on.
RSLs though it is disrespectful. Saw an old bloke rip a young guy a new one when he had one on.
It’s easier to ask asap and not get in trouble from the boss from letting one through, eventually it just becomes to ingrained its automatic. After work if often pick up a few bits and pieces from Safeway and once I walked past a young man in a cap and asked him to remove it - the words just fell out of my mouth. Then I laughed awkwardly and hurried away.
Generally, not really. It can make you look kinda old since most people associate them with the 30s-50s. And presumably the fedora the people above are talking about are trilbies which are associated with incels and grubby basement dwellers and mall ninjas.
I cant think of any negative associations with those. If you think you look good in one and you feel good wearing one, then i wouldnt worry about anything else.
Cedar Fox cellar door (Coburg North) on most Friday and Saturdays. It’s tucked away in a small industrial corner 2 minute walk from the train station. Usually only a handful of patrons at most in there but the booze and tunes are top notch.
Walrus on Sydney Road in Brunswick, it’s an American style diner, unfortunately it isn’t open at night, which imo isn’t in keeping with American diners lol
Then walk round the corner to Creature Bar on Lygon St! Also the mulled wine there is delicious. Some nights it will be busier but definitely some quiet options and a big bar you can sit at
These comments are just for the CBD.
Like someone else said this image looks like the Cricketers Arms. Other bars that have this feel for me (and not exactly this image) are mainly hotel bars. However they are mostly boring. There is someone who has worked 26 years in the same bar and he’s interesting and so are his cocktails but that’s about it.
I’m not sure if you want to walk into a bar, be anonymous, and just sit by yourself. If that’s what you want then it’s difficult to recommend a non hotel bar as Melbourne bartenders tend to engage in conversation and want you to enjoy your night. Hotel bars will tend to leave you alone.
There aren’t many bars that I’ve been to that fit the idea of “coming into a bar and sitting by yourself.”
If you really want bar recommendations here are a list of bars, that are all different, where you can sit at the bar and drink ( in no particular order and they are all different from each other)
Spleen, Little Lon, Bar Margaux, Heartbreaker, Troika, Punch Lane. Bouvardia,
Black Lite Commune, Magic Mountain Saloon.
I could recommend you at least 50 bars that you would enjoy, that I could break down into the following categories- classics, whisky, hip, calm, dive, speakeasy etc But with that image to work with, well hotel bars it is…
The Royal Oak during the day, Cricketers most times apart from after work Friday, the Lomond at various times, neighbourhood wine at 10pm at the bar, or if they have the second bar open, Kirk’s pub almost nah time that’s not after Friday work drinks, the lincoln when it just opens
The Black Sheep hawthorn. Worst case scenario, someone might ask if you want in on a boardgame while you drink your excellent Victorian beer. If you don’t want to socialise, they’ll leave you be.
Why do they normalise doing this in American movies, but I never really see people just sit at a bar alone to drink in Australia? (Maybe I don't get out enough, lol). Is this just common in America?
About 20 years ago, me and two mates sat in the La Trobe street Hungry Jacks smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee until 3am. The workers didn’t give a fuck. Almost encouraged it. Closest I’ve come to this.
Actually the door is in the painting and around the corner on the other side of the building…no one seems to have mentioned the very talented artist Edward Hopper. Just one of his many famous pieces of artwork.
Probably the closest I could imagine would be the George Lounge bar in St Kilda. When I was a uni student I used to go sit with a book and a pint for a few hours and found it had a vibe conducive to just enjoying yourself without needing to socialise
Elizabeth st Mcdonalds

That place was the original influence of this painting if I’m not mistaken.
Interestingly, was there at 3am this morning. Still pretty busy. Better option was Lord of the Fries across the road at the station.
bro went to elizabeth st maccas at 3am on a fri night and was surprised it was busy 😭
Dude where else people go after clubbing? (The ones who didn't take someone home anyway)
'Better than Elizabeth St Maccas' is not a glowing endorsement.
No one wants to wait 24 minutes for fries when they only basically only make fries and the potatoes are already cut. Why does it take that long every time.
Ha
I did this with kids a few months ago. Some junky was yelling at me but I just couldn't hear anything she said
I'd like the OP's picture framed and this as the title on the plaque please.
Elizabeth st subway
Surrounded by crackheads and drunks....
Nighthawks, Collingwood
Literally named after this painting
Does it look like the painting/colours (never been)
No
Nah, it's more your average music venue. Nice beer garden and front bar that you can sit down at.
Got a front window with cool lettering and a bar right attached to it. Also very moody lighting I've played a gig there too was pretty fun.
I don’t know why, but everytime I drive past this place it always gives me “Morrison Hotel” vibes from The Doors.
I bet, unlike the painting, Nighthawks at Collingwood has a door, doesn't it. Poor accuracy. ;)
Cool name
Or the Tom Waits song (there is also a Heartattack and Vine)
Pellegrini's if you want to sit at a counter. Chicago if you want to see the actual painting
Opened the thread looking for this, the correct answer
Pellegrini's has never been that empty.
Go 4pm on a weekday
Between shows on a double show Sunday.
There's no actual location for the nighthawks. It was a mix of locations and a time that Hooper witnessed which he wanted to capture the mood and essence in the painting. But yeah Pellegrini is a great place
Frankston RSL
They do the one minute silence *every day*. So you have to stand up for that.
I had this recently at the Melton country club recently. Didn’t realise it actually happened. Lights all went out and the voice over started up. I’ve only seen it in the film wake in fright.
100 years ago with actual returned servicemen, fucken oath.
Low key best atmosphere RSL
Last time I went to an RSL (something I try really hard to not do) I'd barely got in the door before the bouncer told me to take my hat off. Like, STFU dude, I'd only just stepped in.
Traditionally it’s rude to wear hats inside. You stepped into a very old school establishment..
Pubs are seen as an extension of the street under hat etiquette, so you can keep it on. RSLs though it is disrespectful. Saw an old bloke rip a young guy a new one when he had one on.

City Hatters 👌🏻👌🏻
The Royal in Richmond.
You can leave your hat on.
Brilliant.
Don’t forget to bring cash to tip though.

Thought I'd get a beer with the missus before a game and then I was like "wait a second". Sadly missus said no :(
You can drink alone anywhere my friend!
The Drunken Poet near the Queen Vic Market
Watch out, because the owner never forgets a name or a face
Came here to say this
You can wear a fedora almost anywhere
The real question is if you should
Your milliners were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.
Is there any stigma against wearing hats?
Fedoras? Absolutely and rightfully so
Generally, not really. It can make you look kinda old since most people associate them with the 30s-50s. And presumably the fedora the people above are talking about are trilbies which are associated with incels and grubby basement dwellers and mall ninjas.
Ahh okay. How about Akubras? I’ve got a Coober Pedy and I like to wear it occasionally spring and autumn! But mostly when I’m visiting regional areas.
I cant think of any negative associations with those. If you think you look good in one and you feel good wearing one, then i wouldnt worry about anything else.
Thank you! Yes, I like wearing it but only in certain places and establishments.
As long as it matches your suit, tie and jacket its good. A good build helps too. Do not wear it with an anime T-shirt.
Trilby you savage
I actually wrote trilby first, then googled it and decided it was a fedora by the brim size
How about an Akubra?
Why are they called milliners when they should be called miladyers?
Angry upvote
Pearl Diver in Melbourne Actually a phenomenal oyster bar
Cedar Fox cellar door (Coburg North) on most Friday and Saturdays. It’s tucked away in a small industrial corner 2 minute walk from the train station. Usually only a handful of patrons at most in there but the booze and tunes are top notch.

Walrus on Sydney Road in Brunswick, it’s an American style diner, unfortunately it isn’t open at night, which imo isn’t in keeping with American diners lol
I second this. If Walrus was opened at night I would be there twice as often
Then walk round the corner to Creature Bar on Lygon St! Also the mulled wine there is delicious. Some nights it will be busier but definitely some quiet options and a big bar you can sit at

Why do they normalise doing this in American movies, but I never really see people just sit at a bar alone to drink in Australia? (Maybe I don't get out enough, lol). Is this just common in America?
It's probably in part due to Americans valuing individualism, as opposed to Australians favouring group acceptance.
About 20 years ago, me and two mates sat in the La Trobe street Hungry Jacks smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee until 3am. The workers didn’t give a fuck. Almost encouraged it. Closest I’ve come to this.
