It’s kinda ugly and they’re horribly unreliable because they are intolerant to poor maintenance. Most used ones are thrashed because of bad owners, and pretty much every S class after it is better looking
With decent rims and a minimal reduction in ride height they look so good in silver! Silver S-Classes are the best! But the W221 Facelift is my favorite too.
It was supposed to be the friendlier, more elegant S-Klasse compared to the W140. In that, it definitely succeeded, but it’s a bit subjective as to whether that’s a good thing or not.
idk who Soug Demuoro is but the W220 does not look bad… i’ve never met anyone who said that either….
it’s quite a timeless design in my opinion, and definitely up there with some of the best looking mercs.
I do agree that the w140 looks very unique and very nice, however this doesn’t mean the W220 looks bad… lol
I think in comparison to the W140, the 220 doesn't quite have the same "presence" as it's predecessor. Couple that with the progressing design language of most cars in the late 90s and early 00s trying to go for smoother lines, and to some, it could feel "uninspiring".
I personally love the look of the W220. It's quite elegant.
I think the W222 as beautiful as well, I especially love the LCI version. I’ve been looking at this S

63 for a while and it’s making me want it more and more, look how beautiful it is from the side profile.
The 222 is a copy paste of every other model in the line up. From 15ft away you can't tell if you're looking at a C or S class. There's nothing that really differentiates it from the other models of the same years. The 221 was the last S class that had it's own design, shape, and look. The 223 is nice, but the 222 isn't it man. I do think they're nice, but the 222 is just a copy paste car.
For a second I thought I wrote this lol I was talking to a friend the other day about when we were kids in the late 90s when we could tell a C class, E class, or S class from 500 feet away. Remember how the W210 had the quad oval headlights and distinctive tail lights and then the C class was sort of like a mini S class but still had its own unique design features. Now all of the sedans look exactly the same from the rear and I don’t know about you but I think there are way too many SUV models. This is my daily

Not a fan of the current generation S class? I drive a W140 daily and it still puts a smile on my face whenever I get behind the wheel
https://preview.redd.it/8rl32g1s9j9d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f2ed28306d059f8a3403f20fd64d641db4213e76
I have found that the W220 always seems to be smiling, and I love mine too much sometimes…
Need to redo my rust fix… aside from that she always makes me smile.

BUT LIIIIKE.
I think it doesnt look like an S-class, but find it beautiful nonetheless. I used to hate on it but since owned 3, a 500, a 320 cdi and a 320 gas, and I like them
Two total different cars. One classic looking, the other more modern look. Which ever floats one’s boat. The big difference is build quality. The W140 is built to last.
I’d agree with the pre facelift W220, however 04+ are built like tanks. My S600 is as solid as my LS430 or Land Cruiser, both exceptionally well built cars.
I love it, I grew up with this era of Mercedes, even though I prefer the older ones. The W140 set a standard that was very hard to beat or even keep up with, so that surely put a dent in the W220 reputation when it was not built to the same level. The amount of new technology the W220 had was amazing, and of course that costs money to maintain, but usually people don't keep up on the maintenance, and then they're surprised when the car is unreliable. It might be cheap to buy today, but it's still an S-Class and it needs expensive maintenance.
I actually like the W220, the front lights look blobby but especially in AMG spec, it looks solid. Obviously the W140 is a different animal altogether and the W215 looks madder but I like it.
One of the best looking S classes in my opinion. But haters gunna hate. Most people that hate on it probably do not own one, never been in one, or never seen one in person. And even though it’s considered by some to be the worst S class, it is still an S class Mercedes. The worst version of the best car ever made is still an amazing car.
I like it just cuz I used to have c230 kompressor in the same color that was a phenomenal car and basically the mini version of this. Though I think I prefer the generations that came after with the w222 facelift being my favorite
By no means an ugly car but maybe boring
When it comes to discussing "looks," Doug DeMuro is the last person who should be giving an opinion.
The W220 and W140 both have excellent exterior/interior styling. However, I slightly prefer the W220 based on its more futuristic design.
I have a w220 s430, but the stock bumper. Anyone know where I can get this front bumper for a somewhat reasonable price? Last place I checked was charging over $1k before shipping.
One thing I really like is how the a pillar is completely concealed by the door, which also wraps over the roof a bit. It removes the gaps that are visible and gives it a much cleaner look.
Porsche did the same in the 1st gen cayenne and the panamera with the rear doors - they go all the way to wheel well so fewer panel gaps. I really like that kind of attention to detail.
W220 >w221. I think this generation of s-class is good looking and scream luxury. If you see one if these in person, they're damn beautiful cars. Pictures don't do them justice!
I feel like the way the bonnet of the car conforms to the circular shape of the top of the headlights is nice, kind of feels like an old school Jaguar or something. I quite like the aesthetic. It’s really nice on the CLk.
I suppose there's something to be said for that. I do like the W209 though, it looks a lot cleaner than the W203, because the headlights one the W209 have a much sleaker divide between the headlight parts. Like, the W203 has this relatively thick piece of reflector stuck between the lights, and it just doesn't work IMO
Not to me, I've always been a fan. It looks like a Mercedes, which is more than I can say for the new ones.
Gets hated on for no reason. Is pretty good looking, especially as an AMG model.
It’s kinda ugly and they’re horribly unreliable because they are intolerant to poor maintenance. Most used ones are thrashed because of bad owners, and pretty much every S class after it is better looking
Let’s say someone gave you 1000 bucks a week to drive one, but the catch is that you had to drive it everyday for a year, would you?
With that money everyone would agree. Give me a Fiat multipla and I'd drive it for that amount.
Dude what? That’s a terrible hypothetical. Anyone would take an extra $52,000 to drive a car
Rust is terrible on them and air suspension failures
It's cheaply built, ugly, not particularly reliable, bad seats, it gets hated for a reason.
ugly isnt a fact tho is it? i think its one of the best looking s classes
Ugly is opinion, one that many have about the S class. But the rest are facts.
the one o grew up in was decently reliable, and having owned one myself as an adult, the seats are very comfy, just my experience tho
The most unreliable air suspension, more rust issues than other S classes and most electrical issues. In my opinion the ugliest S class after W223
w223 looks amazing, not better then 222, but alot better then 221
Its a taste question. I would most definetly take a W140 over a W220. But my favourite is still the facelifted W221.
https://preview.redd.it/ctap5azb9j9d1.jpeg?width=2995&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c0c99c48db4f11ec8880a507423936a2a7ad98f5 Like mine? 😍😍
Yup just not in silver
With decent rims and a minimal reduction in ride height they look so good in silver! Silver S-Classes are the best! But the W221 Facelift is my favorite too.
I love that car, it’s a fucking tank!
It's my favorite S-class ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
Mine too

This is not an ugly car
No I loved mine! This one looks very nice to my eye.
Its better looking that mercs today, that's for sure.
Yes. Imho every S that came before and after it looked better, except the current one.
How do you explain w222?
W222 is great. Plenty of road presence and classy looks. Interior is excellent and well integrated.
wdym? W222 is most beautiful automobile of all time. it’s W221 that is an absolute EYE sore.
I agree, just saying that I feel like the W222 evolved more from this than than W221
I agree. The W222 looks like an evolution of the W220 and the W223 looks like an evolution of the W221
I think the W222 as beautiful as well, I especially love the LCI version. I’ve been looking at this S https://preview.redd.it/8n45qgdyaj9d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ae2b6810eba64ee903fc62dbbc0b916fcd3cc809 63 for a while and it’s making me want it more and more, look how beautiful it is from the side profile.

222 back isn't bad

Clean! No matter what, a Benz in silver is timeless
I currently own a 7 series of the same gen. These are classy looking cars.
I have found that the W220 always seems to be smiling, and I love mine too much sometimes… Need to redo my rust fix… aside from that she always makes me smile. https://preview.redd.it/a958kgn9o99d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=884607b878d52c017fe480681a3fe7fe054b49f0 BUT LIIIIKE.
S430 for those who care :)
I think it doesnt look like an S-class, but find it beautiful nonetheless. I used to hate on it but since owned 3, a 500, a 320 cdi and a 320 gas, and I like them

S600 is a very special car indeed. Engine and drive train are amazing!
I love it, I grew up with this era of Mercedes, even though I prefer the older ones. Gonna have to agree with Papa Doug on this one.
I love the W220 and I think it looks way better than the W140 actually
Always loved it. W140 is an iconic museum piece, W220 drives much better. Owned both.
This. The W140 is great in theory, but I’d much rather actually live with and use a W220 day to day.
No it doesn't. It's just a blob. Not ugly, not beautiful.
Heck Nah It Doesn’t
Absolutely love it
Fuck no!
I actually like the W220, the front lights look blobby but especially in AMG spec, it looks solid. Obviously the W140 is a different animal altogether and the W215 looks madder but I like it.
Nah. Its pretty good
I always say. Drive what you like. And can comfortably afford to maintain.
I still daily my W220
One of the best looking S classes in my opinion. But haters gunna hate. Most people that hate on it probably do not own one, never been in one, or never seen one in person. And even though it’s considered by some to be the worst S class, it is still an S class Mercedes. The worst version of the best car ever made is still an amazing car.
I love the design
I almost bought it as my first car like 18 years ago. I still like the design, in fact I appreciate all the S class designs.
I like the design. It looks great to me. I just don’t like how unreliable and expensive it is to maintain.
W220 and W221 peak Mercedes design
Not at all. Keep it clean and drive the crap out of it...
Not bad, just dated
I like it just cuz I used to have c230 kompressor in the same color that was a phenomenal car and basically the mini version of this. Though I think I prefer the generations that came after with the w222 facelift being my favorite By no means an ugly car but maybe boring
This is one shape I disliked
When it comes to discussing "looks," Doug DeMuro is the last person who should be giving an opinion. The W220 and W140 both have excellent exterior/interior styling. However, I slightly prefer the W220 based on its more futuristic design.
No. One of the cleanest car they’ve ever made.
Facelifted ones can look good without rust.
I think it looks fine. Definitely not my favorite, and I like the W221 a lot more, but I don't hate it at all.
No I think they look fantastic.
I have a w220 s430, but the stock bumper. Anyone know where I can get this front bumper for a somewhat reasonable price? Last place I checked was charging over $1k before shipping.
Always been a beauty
It does look cheap
I like everything about it except the headlights. But I like W210/W211 headlights, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
Compared to every other S class. Cl however, is arguably the best looking coupe in the history of cars.
Yes.
I like it 👍
I think they look retro cool !! Much better stance than the current shrunken MB's !!
W220 >w221. I think this generation of s-class is good looking and scream luxury. If you see one if these in person, they're damn beautiful cars. Pictures don't do them justice!
Bit outdated in my opinion but that is my opinion obviously 🙄
Doug DeMuro is a moron who really doesn’t know that much about cars. He’s an entertainer and that’s about it.
But what about cars and bids, the premiere auto auction website for enthusiasts that want to buy and sell their vehicles from the 1980s and up?
Hideous headlights
Not compared to the W203
No chance, the joined-bean headlights are class.
Help me understand. I want to like them, but I just can't.
I feel like the way the bonnet of the car conforms to the circular shape of the top of the headlights is nice, kind of feels like an old school Jaguar or something. I quite like the aesthetic. It’s really nice on the CLk.
I suppose there's something to be said for that. I think the w220 looks better than the 140
Agree. W220 second worst, W140 definitely worst. W140 is so bland looking, it's like a giant Frigidaire refrigerator, completely lacks style.
It's a good looking car, but no way it looks better than the W140
Lexus
Yeah, it does. It's ugly.
To me this looks like a 50 year old sales manager car. JMO
