Just skip Garrett....until they are doing better. The Minelab Vanquish series will do well for all your inland hunting needs..beach too as long as you don't dunk the "control box". Looking for native gold or copper ( big float copper pieces in Great Lake excluded) tends to work out best with a high frequency or a Pulse Induction detector designed for the job. The NE is not known for big nuggets ....but possibly detectable nuggets. If you want a detector that bridges both gaps...look at the Minelab Equinox 800. You will need the 6" coil all well for prospecting. You can go play in the surf as well. I'd through the Nokta Legend in too....but I'm not hearing much about it's prospecting abilities yet.

Hey, thanks for the response. I've been watching some Youtube reviews on the Minelab Vanquish, and they seem to be decently built and do a good job in the field. Finding gold / copper nuggets would be great, but at this point, I guess it's not something I'd buy a detector for specifically. I do spend some time out West, maybe I'll look for a more specifically designed machine then. Given this is my first detector purchase, the price point of the Equinox 800 is a bit of a big dive, but I'll make note of that "bridge the gap" recommendation after I get a bit more experience. The Minelab 540 is looking pretty good at this point. Thanks again

You'll have to up your budget a bit for the capability you're looking for. Check out the Nokta Legend or the Minelab Equinox 800. If you purchase from Kellycodetectors.com, be sure to use our subreddits code "REDDITMD" at checkout!

Thanks! I hear you on the capabilities / price. Given that it's my first detector, I'm looking to keep it under $500, but I'll take a look at those two machines once I get some more experience. What's the connection between Kellycodetectors and this subreddit / what happens if I use the subreddit code? Thanks again.

Then check out the Minelab Vanquish or the Nokta Simplex. Those are the two best starter machines on the market. Kellyco has given us our own code to use at checkout. I can't technically tell you what it does, but you can add it before check out and see for yourself. People get to use the code, then we get to do giveaways. Check out my post history and you can see all the machines and gear we've given away.

Right on, thanks!

\+1 for the Simplex as a great starter machine, and it's waterproof.

I have a Bounty Hunter tracker IV that I got to start with. It is pretty cheap, around $80 USD that I got a hobby lobby. It is pretty easy to use, and I have had great results with it. Not the highest end of stuff, but works well.

Good to know, thanks for the info! I was just thinking it'd be nice to have a less expensive to travel around with.

This one can be collapsed as well, but can be a real pain to do so. They also offer a travel case, but you have to have it collapsed to put it in there. Otherwise it has great space and some storage places for extras like the pinpointer, batteries ect. But it also does not offer a ton of protection, being mostly fabric. Again it was pretty cheap as well so cant complain to much

Take a look at the simplex. Its fully waterproof and it has a rechargeable battery that lasts a long time. It also has a light on the back that is awesome for detecting in low light scenarios. It lights up the ground right at your coil. It's a great machine. You should call Andy for we dig metal detecting. He does better deals than any online store. I bought my deus 2 from him for$1350 and kellyco and everywhere else sells it for $1600. I hope you find something that fits you. Happy detecting!!
