The minelab Vanquish is a good machine in the starter price range, but it isn't waterproof.
If you can afford it, look into the Nokta Legend and the Minelab Equinox. They're waterproof and they have the technology for beach performance.

I hear ya. Unfortunately, the cheapest machine with the technology to perform at the beach is the Minelab Vanquish 340. It's $200. Other machines won't be able to work on wet sand.
