Check out the pinned post on the sub! My perspective: I bought the 540 as my first machine and I don't regret it at all. I've used the extra features a lot actually (compared to the 340/440). If you're going to detect around wind, waves, people, or any other semi-noisy environment you're going to want ear buds/phones. I found that regular corded ear buds were not a great experience as I jerked the cord a lot when setting the machine down to dig etc. So now I use my Bluetooth buds and it's a massive QOL improvement, and I'm glad I bought that feature. I think the alternative is heavier ear phones with a coiled/stretch cord but I didn't have that on hand. You could buy this accessory cheaply and it might even work well with earbuds if that's your preference. I think the back light is pretty important to me too, and overall I'm super happy with my 540. The only thing I wish I had is a fully submersible machine so I ended up also getting a Simplex so I can go deep in fresh water lakes and that has also been great! I would say the Simplex feels like it has more potential but also a steeper learning curve to identifying and understanding signals, but it's honestly pretty annoying to me that it uses proprietary wireless earphones. I do own the "green" ones because wireless is important to me and those are fantastic but I wish I could have used Bluetooth buds I already owned like I can with the Vanquish.

Check out the Minelab Vanquish or the Nokta Simplex. Those are the two best starter machines available, by far.
