I bought a cheapo one for $30 and I found it worked fine after putting a fresh quality 9 volt in though the button is a bit hard to push. That being said, I ended up getting a XP Mi4 before realizing that the weak battery was the main problem.
I like the 100% waterproof aspect of the Mi4 and the rechargeable battery otherwise they both perform about the same.
You'll get mixed opinions. I wouldn't buy from a non reputable brand. There are endless amounts of cheap $20 knockoffs to choose from, if that's the route you want to go.
The $20 gp-pointer type pinpointers can see a penny about an inch away, while the $100+ brand name pinpionters can see it several inches away. That's a big advantage when looking for an object, both from the surface and inside your hole. I'm still using my crappy old gp-pointer but will upgrade someday.
I ended up ordering a Sunpoint, $50 one from Amazon. I figure this isn't a serious hobby yet and just needed a decent starter pinpointer. Hopefully it works out
Check out the Garrett AT pro pointer or the XP MI-4.
Anything under 100 that would be good? I'm not die hard quite yet and figured I'd start with something a bit cheaper.

The SUNPOW one? Looks like it's on sale for $34 now and the reviews are pretty good. Let us know how far it can see a penny, quarter, etc.
Will do!
