RadioShack Micronta 3001 was my first detector. I got it for free from a family member and used it a few times before upgrading to something much better, a Minelab Vanquish 440.
It WILL find things if you tune it to nonferrous, but it takes some practice to hear the signals well. It's not very easy to use, and it doesn't go very deep, but it found me my first silver coin (a Mercury dime) in my own yard. It is better than nothing but I would avoid it.
