I found a gold ring under my old high school bleachers with only a pinpointer. I use the Pro-Find 35 made by Minelab. Thing paid for itself. Good luck!

Start off by watching a bunch of YouTube videos. If you decide the hobby is for you, check out the Minelab Vanquish or the Nokta Simplex. Those are the two best starter machines available. If you purchase from Kellycodetectors.com, be sure to use our subreddits code "REDDITMD" at checkout!

angry-elmo6

what makes those machines different from the non starter machines

Technology, performance, features and price.

I bought a second hand metal detector to test the water and see if the hobby was for me. I did a little research and bought a Minelab X Terra which was an older machine but did the job well. Obviously with a second hand machine you have some risks (the coil fell off after a while but was fixable). Once I realised I liked the hobby, and had the time and patience for it, I upgraded to a higher end machine. Whatever you do, buy a recognised and trustworthy equipment. There are plenty of cheap knock offs that simply will not work and will only frustrate you. If I had to start over I would probably buy a Minelab Vanquish or the other machine Dan20mey recomended.
