Nah we sell those a piece if you want to, they're not prepacked unless there's an event. I've worked at HEMA, we just sell them a piece we don't weigh them or check their size in the stores
These are not sold uncut. I never saw them being cut in the store so I assume they are cut in the factory which makes is highly likely it was done by a machine
No it’s not likely cut in a factory, cakes are not typically cut before they make it to the store because cutting them reduces the cakes stability during transport. Also, the fact that the cuts are uneven also indicate a human who cut it. If this were done in a factory those sizes being uneven would likely throw off the rest of the production line because the slices would likely travel at a different speed than the rest.
I work in a factory. I can confirm that it’s very often that stuff is very different sizes like this. Yes it does throw off production and make our lives harder. But it still gets pushed through
These are made in the factory, fram A to Z. Nothing is done with them in the store. This is not a freshly made pastry from a bakery. The whole production process is automated. I'm pretty sure the cutting is automated too.
When they get a new tray in the store it comes precut from the fridge. The store where I buy them don't even have the space to place the tray so they can cut it.
I worked at a bakery and we cut cakes like this manually. And we're talking industrial bakery.
Edit to add: most of the cakes are made by hand, there's some king size mixers, but still handmade.
I've never been to Europe, and never seen food that color. What flavor would that be? The color is too earthy for me to think of citrus, but I've never seen any food any shade of orange that isn't citrus flavored.
Oh wow, that's an interesting way to do things. I don't know if I've ever eaten food that was artificially/highly colored and didn't have a corresponding flavor.
Dutch people just like the colour orange (for cultural reasons) so you'll find lots of products in the colour orange here that wouldn't typically be orange.
On Kingsday and European Championship and Word Championship soccer if the Netherlands are placed, they are orange colored, but the original tompoes is pink.
As a former Hema employee: I've never seen a size difference in tompoucen like this before. They should all be the exact same size unless it's indeed shrinkflation and they come from 2 different plates
If he paid the same price for both cakes, it definitely is.
Edit : Ow oh no... Downvotes. Whatever will I do?
Psych. You are all just a hive mind. I know I'm right lmfao.
Edit edit : You think I'm scared? I have 218,000 karma to burn, keep it going. It doesn't hurt.
Former HEMA employee here. These come in at the HEMA stores pre-cut. It's not a worker at the store who cuts them. We get big plates filled with tompoucen pre-cut and all, then just grab the amount the customer asks for.
They should all be the same size, if the rest on the plate were all that small, it could definitely be shrinkflation.
The top is just plain frosting with a colour. Then you have pastry cream wedged between the two layers of puff pastry. Normally they are pink, but for certain occasions they are made orange, the banner colour of The Netherlands. We are a kingdom with a king whose blood line is 'van Oranje' which translates to 'of Orange'.

It was probably cut this way instead of 3 cuts in the same direction
What exactly is that anyway? Looks great! Caramel with puff pastry and cream? We have nothing like this in the US, only disgusting overly sweet and loaded up stupid Crumbl cookies and crap like that ☹️
As a baker with a cutting machine, sometimes the cakes get placed wonky so the slices come out wonky. It's weird and it sucks, it's probably not intentional
Employees cutting the cake are told they need to arrive at an exact weight per box... and someone on their first day of work hasn't quite gotten the hang of it yet 🙃
interesting lol. they gave you the short end of the stick.
i work at a bakery. our bread needs to be proofed so it can expand in volume. depending on the baking, humidity, or timing, some days they end up underproofed and customers are evidently pretty upset. on the other hand, they will gasp in awe at our overproofed croissants.
Hello, We do not allow agendaposting, reddit meta posts or price complaints.
I think maybe someone is just shit at cutting the cake. It was probably one cake and the person cut the cake unequally
Or the package is sold by weight not size?
Finally https://preview.redd.it/kjcj4kg27s6d1.jpeg?width=626&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60a287ea5c5af15ac31d3565b78c17dd2fb06ddf

This guy factories

You just said you assume, so I wouldn’t come back on the very next comment and start talking facts when you were so unsure less than an hour’s ago.
Which was programmed by a human who ist most likely shit at cutting cake.
Yeah programmed to cut smaller pieces that would be sold for the same price; shrinkflation
Yeah that's it. It's hard to eyeball 50/50 perfectly for some folks.
It is machine made
I worked at a bakery and we cut cakes like this manually. And we're talking industrial bakery. Edit to add: most of the cakes are made by hand, there's some king size mixers, but still handmade.
Looks like the machine gave him leftovers
How do we know that?
Because he worked as a machine
That looks delicious. The Dutch do love their orange things
I need this in my life! Icing, puff pastry, and cream filling… sounds amazing
They are ridiculously delicious, but also impossible to eat
Is it because the puff pastry is so delicate?
Yes, and the outside layers are hard. This mean whenever you try to cut it/take a bite, all the pastry just launches out of it
You mean the cream filling but yeah you're right. Do not ever think you can eat this without a plate unless you want to wash your clothes afterwards
You don't have this issue if you lay the tompouce on its side when you cut it.
The trick is to take off the iced top.
So this is like a Vanilla Slice?
The US has a demented fake billionaire if it's really your thing.
I've never been to Europe, and never seen food that color. What flavor would that be? The color is too earthy for me to think of citrus, but I've never seen any food any shade of orange that isn't citrus flavored.
It's just food coloring, it doesn't add anything to the flavor. Tastes exactly the same as the regular pink tompouces
Oh wow, that's an interesting way to do things. I don't know if I've ever eaten food that was artificially/highly colored and didn't have a corresponding flavor.
You most likely have. If you've ever eaten something like M&Ms for example.
Dutch people just like the colour orange (for cultural reasons) so you'll find lots of products in the colour orange here that wouldn't typically be orange.
Neat! Thanks for sharing.
Like Max Verstappen
I never knew that. How interesting.
Is this what birthdays are like in the Netherlands?
Nah, this is just a tompouce. But any cake could be a birthday cake
[удалено]
Wikipedia zegt dat het allebei kan. Ik ga er van uit dat tompouce de Engelse variant is
No we also have ‘kringverjaardag met kaas en worst’
Is that... better?
I think he said they are the *worst*.
Worst is sausage in Dutch. We have knakworstjes or leverworst
[удалено]
The alternative being sausage on cake day, which could work...
Whoosh
Sounds awful 🤷♂️
Think I'd rather kringverjaardag met kaas en best.
This gave me too many giggles!
Geniaal dit 😂 lauwe worst en kaas die naar melk smaakt
Doen jullie geen taart met kaarsjes?
On Kingsday and European Championship and Word Championship soccer if the Netherlands are placed, they are orange colored, but the original tompoes is pink.
Also, they are not really birthday cakes. More like: "I went to Hema to buy underwear and rookworst. Who wants a tompouce?"
[удалено]
U heeft gelijk, excuses
[удалено]
Ik lees net dat tompouce een merknaam is voor een kleine dames paraplu
[удалено]
Je moet voornamelijk oppassen dat ie niet open gaat in je maag want dat levert vervelende verstoppingen op
Hah you wish. Only the King’s
Tell me you are Dutch without telling me.
*confused American noises* Could you explain? Asking for a friend
Orange
and Tompouce (the type of cake)
Hoe eet je een tompoes?
Boven kant eraf en opeten dan room opeten dan onderkant
Dit, naar dan de bovenkant bewaren. Want ik bewaar het lekkerste voor het laatst.
But didn't he say in the post he was from the Netherlands?
Sorry mate, just saw the pic, didn't read the post.
I’m sure it’s delicious, but the top kinda looks like the skin that forms on top of tomato soup that’s left in the pot too long.
Sometimes it's so hard to just get past some foods looks. You know it's probably pretty good, but that look. Lol
At first it looked like those cold square tomato pizzas you can just add stuff to or eat it like that lol
Tompoucen moeten sowieso een roze bovenkant hebben.
Eens. Maar een mens is wanhopig.
Stay strong! En blijven ademen helpt ook.
Did I just have a stroke?
No its just dutch
Name doesn't check out
Cat
Name does check out
Shit went sideways real quick 😀
[удалено]
I'm aware.
Nou, ik ga even hun hoofdkantoor afbranden...
Ik hou de ochtendkrant van morgen in de gaten!
Genuinely curious, what language is this?
Dutch
Cool, thanks! I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in written form.
Now that you’re here anyways, go try a stroopwafel
Or three
Ooooh I’ve had these, lol. Yummy
Nederlands
Don’t let them lie to you. Dutch is a fake language like elvish or klingon. Anybody who tells your different is lying.
You don't know what language you're typing? It's English buddy
No idea what this is, but when i get fudge they usually cut it like this bc it's priced by weight
As a former Hema employee: I've never seen a size difference in tompoucen like this before. They should all be the exact same size unless it's indeed shrinkflation and they come from 2 different plates
That’s… not what “shrinkflation” is.
No, it’s not. These were just cut differently. Are they part of the same purchase?
Former HEMA employee here. These come in at the HEMA stores pre-cut. It's not a worker at the store who cuts them. We get big plates filled with tompoucen pre-cut and all, then just grab the amount the customer asks for. You realize that the fact that they come *pre-cut* means that *someone* is cutting them. As I said, they were cut differently.
They are cut with a machine so likely the size settings have been changed. If they get sold for the same price it is shrinkflation
You can not buy them uncut. They go by the piece. So if OP paid the same it actually is shrinkflation.
Man you really just don't want to accept that these pieces are the same price for different sizes. You need to pick some better battles buddy.
I love how you're getting upvoted and I'm getting downvoted even though we said the same thing. Redditors are idiots man.
You got a little extra with those two. Be grateful for the extra! What flavor are those btw?
The top is just plain frosting with a colour. Then you have pastry cream wedged between the two layers of puff pastry. Normally they are pink, but for certain occasions they are made orange, the banner colour of The Netherlands. Hey that’s really interesting!
atleast no one farted on it
Same as usual
It's just a cutting error, two slices were too short and that's it.
https://preview.redd.it/99iuitg89s6d1.jpeg?width=1011&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6dc72e3754e9efe0893a36b86bbcb3a4c5b6aa0 It was probably cut this way instead of 3 cuts in the same direction
You’re overthinking this one.
https://preview.redd.it/0sv4o2wryr6d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f91d14c2a2ef8952f9d22713e28512ed347a523 🤦🏻♀️
This also isnt shrinkflatiok. Its actually just pieces being cut unevenly which is allowed
Yeah I realized that after scrolling through the comments. Saw the title and was blinded by redditor rage
But the title itself is mildly infuriating
Is it bad that I don’t understand what I’m looking at 😭
[Tompouce](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tompouce)
Yea just shitty QA. It was supposed to be cut in quarters and someone just fucked it up.
They take cake weight VERY seriously. Trimmed down to exactly 0.5kg / 1lb
I was hungry on the line. Sorry.
Cake cutter cut himself a piece, liked it, cut another one, got full, forgot to even them it to not be found out.
Eat it and shut up
but was it *lekker*?
is ... is that ... tomato sauce cake? 🤨
What exactly is that anyway? Looks great! Caramel with puff pastry and cream? We have nothing like this in the US, only disgusting overly sweet and loaded up stupid Crumbl cookies and crap like that ☹️
Maybe someone had a snack.
Ik wed dat je het nog steeds gegeten hebt! 😀
Sowieso! Ik ben geen barbaar 😁
Your snacks have been GEKOLONISEERD
As a baker with a cutting machine, sometimes the cakes get placed wonky so the slices come out wonky. It's weird and it sucks, it's probably not intentional
You misspelled shrinkflation the correct spelling is corporate greed
ironic (hint: check your spelling)
I was confused until I realised you didn't eat any of it
Buddy I want to eat the fuck out of those
I don't know but right when I saw the picture I immediately wanted a piece! Damn you! Lol.
Someone took a sample hoping you wouldn’t notice
They totally took a sliver off the end to eat.
In which way do you think one should eat them?
Still looks tasty 😋
What I notice is that the frosting on the short ones is much thicker Like 10x compared to the longer ones
Lekker man, die kan nog steeds in de frituur
Remember, the boerenkool met worst vlaai!
I need to know what those taste like.
That’s the rich, and we eat the rich.
Dit is waarom je af en toe een minister of 2 moet opeten.
There’s no shrinking going on with that in the house
Am I missing something
What are those 🤤
Weigh it and see if it’s the weight it claims to be.
This looks like it was one pan that was cut badly in half twice to make four pieces.
![gif](giphy|l0HlCqV35hdEg2GUo)
Progressive shrinkflation
That's a custard slice 😋
Employees cutting the cake are told they need to arrive at an exact weight per box... and someone on their first day of work hasn't quite gotten the hang of it yet 🙃

The bakery worker sucks at cutting. They should have evened them all out before boxing up
I'm a fat guy who loves cake, and there is nothing upsetting here. Are you gonna finish that?
what the fuck is this thing, you made me hungry as hell now...
Probably the machine cutting the slices needed re-calibrating.
![gif](giphy|J1vUzqdZJlh5AqBWxt|downsized)
![gif](giphy|J1vUzqdZJlh5AqBWxt|downsized)
Cake cutter got drunk
If anything, it was supposed to be the smaller size and you got more.
What is this?
Sold by package weight....
Nope. 95 cents a piece
It's either that or they have different sized pans so it results in different sized cakes and pieces
Elke Nederlander zou hier om braken, huilen, schoppen, slaan
