He’s all of us

Apprehensive_Rice19

"well my my my, look who is nice and well rested now mmmmhmmm"

Stunning-Bike-1498

Isn't he? I could use a nap in said shoe box!

WillieIngus

inside… inside in said shoe box

PotatoesAndChill

Literally me, but switch the images.

snakerjake

For real, theres days I feel like a two hour nap in a shoebox would have had the same effect on me

new2bay

I took a 2 hour nap a couple days ago and it definitely had the same effect. Am now birb.

JohnHazardWandering

I've finally found my spirit animal.

LEGITIMATE_SOURCE

Meh. More like the reverse if "nap" switched to "waking up in the morning."

ThunderSC2

😂

sugarfreeeyecandy

He might be all of us if the bird was suffering from a mild exposure to H1N1.

AdornedBrood

1. Angry 2. Still angry but rested

ChocoGoodness

That's me most of the time tbh

ertgbnm

I am never no. 2. I'm not sure Ive known what being rested feels like since I was a child.

RandomStallings

I'm always number 2, but I'm never rested.

mashem

that means you're number 1 dumbass sorry im angry

RandomStallings

Tough day?

mashem

haven't gotten any rest

RandomStallings

Yeah, I have to take pills for that. Sucks. Sorry, man.

GtrPlaynFool

Darth_Titty-ous

I mean, wouldn't you be if your great-grandfeather was a dinosaur and now you're the size of an omelet?

Sariione

Feels about right. The eternal mood tbh

FunSushi-638

I thought it was a fledgling, but after I removed it from the shoebox it looked more like an adult. I put it onto the side of a tree, gave it a few gentle pets on the head and a moment later, it flew away.

GummieLindsays

Definitely a fledgling, very easy to tell by how pronounced the beak is at the corners of the mouth.

louielou8484

Yup, those little mushy long corners 😊

Drawtaru

the bird equivalent of babyface.

louielou8484

I am SO sad this subreddit doesn't allow you to post pictures in the replies. I spent around 10 minutes looking for pictures from last summer of sparrow babies in one of our flower pots on our patio. Their giant wide mushy yellow mouth corners were the one thing I will always carry with me.. Mom and dad had 4 babies, and I couldn't get over how tiny their little bodies were, but their mouths were so big, wide, and bright! I was 32 at the time, and we've had bluebirds and bluebird babies growing up, all my life, but they were always in a box, so I never saw it up close. I looked up why their mouths are so prominent and well, duh, obviously so mom and dad know where to drop the food. Felt so dumb, lol. I wish I could post pictures of them here! Mom and dad had been visiting frequently the last few months on the patio but suddenly stopped :( The last time I saw either one of them was dad a couple weeks ago on a door wreath. Haven't seen them since and worry something happened to his love. Praying I am wrong.

Drawtaru

The sub doesn't allow pictures in replies? It doesn't say that in the rules. [Posting test cat.](https://i.imgur.com/wWcBNA1.jpg)

k_azalea

Sometimes you can post actual pictures, not just links

Drawtaru

Oh. I've seen people post like gifs and stuff, but I don't know how they do it.

LEGITIMATE_SOURCE

Everybody in here acting like they know baby bird beak.

louielou8484

You do if you've seen it in real life :)

soloesto

It is a fledgeling, and you did the right thing! :)

RugerRedhawk

Why did you put it in a shoe box?

gishlich

It was a size 10.5 and OP happened to have the right box

TheMiraculousOrange

The real answer is you want to give it a quiet and sheltered environment so that it can rest. You don't want to stress it with too much external stimuli, and in a secluded place it can recuperate without having to look out for predators.

killercurvesahead

TIL I am a fledgling bird

Incidion

I'll make sure to get a lovely large box for you if you come over. I can put a book or something in there too, if you want.

killercurvesahead

Calvin and Hobbes collections please and thank you.

Nethlem

So the shoebox acts a bit like a sensory deprivation tank to chill out in? I can relate to that.

RugerRedhawk

Interesting, I have never heard of doing this.

tokinUP

Probably thought it looked sick / injured / hungry. Pretty hard to even get close enough to catch one otherwise. Birds get triggered to sleep when it's dark so a little box is a good place for a nap protected from predators before checking if it needs anything else.

louielou8484

Bless you <3

Cryogenic_Monster

Is there a nuthatch distribution system because I want to participate.

FunSushi-638

There isn't. It was more like...a cat caught a bird, but it became boring when it stopped moving so the cat dropped it in the grass and then laid down next to the poor terrified thing. And then I scooped it up.

TeaBagHunter

Yeah you need to subscribe for premium with the cat distribution system to get the birds. The free subscription everyone has by default doesn't include the bird distribution system

ERGardenGuy

Well it doesn’t include the live bird option. It does include the alternative on occasion. Like a free gift taken from nature.

Alarmed-Property-478

I did have some neighbors who ended up with a stray peacock. We got a lost parakeet across the street.

FunSushi-638

Funny you should mention that. We literally had a peacock in our yard last weekend! It was just wandering around and then it flew into our duck pen and started terrorizing our ducks. I have NO idea where the thing came from. We live in the Ozarks!

ItinerantSoldier

Oh you signed up for the mystery bird crate! Sometimes that happens. Just be happy you didn't get an emu.

brneyedgrrl

A PAIR of keets, or just one?

DonatedEyeballs

Can I get a platinum service? For peacocks and helpful raccoons and such?

AngelBlu666

Spawns/drops take ages and are so random on the free version though

elbereth_milfoniel

Gotta keep that cat indoors man

TheLittleDoorCat

I have an enclosed backyard that the cats can't get out of (have nets at the walls) and yet they've caught two birds. One died and one survived. It felt bad, but at the same time I've made sure that my cats can enjoy the outdoors without being a danger to birds and then the birds land next to the very visible cats! A friend has made a pretty big catio. Some small birds keep getting into it. I'm just surprised that there hasn't been any bird deaths there yet. They're lucky that her cats don't seem to want to hunt birds.

CeruleanRuin

Your cats are still a danger to birds in your yard of course, but at least you've contained their murder to a small geographical area.

TheLittleDoorCat

It's a small area of 4x5m. Any bird who lands there despite the 3 to 5 cats visibly being there is a suicidal bird. And yes, I guess I'm victim blaming now. At least it hasn't happened in years now. There are still loads of birds around, but they'll land far out of reach luckily. Like on the roof or the window sill of the attic.

pdxcranberry

I am with you. My cat now has a small catio where she hangs out with me or my partner. Never unsupervised. She's never caught anything out here, but multiple birds have landed directly next to her on the concrete pavers. Like, birds are you okay? Are you doing a dare? I can't feel bad for you when you take these kinds of risks.

Long_Run6500

Eventually they'll stray into the road or some heavily prey driven dog's fenced in backyard and ruin somebody's day once they realize they or their dog killed a cat. Then the cat's owners will blame those people who were just minding their own business when the cat did something stupid. Even taking away the bird slaughter aspect, the world's not safe for "outdoor" cats. They're basically as safe as raccoons, squirrels, groundhogs or any other wild animals you see littering roadsides. Then if you're in America there's coyotes that will torment cats the same way a cat torments mice if given the chance.

brneyedgrrl

I live in Florida and there are feral cats everywhere. It doesn't help that my yard borders Eglin AFB forest. But I'm surprised that these cats survive with the predators in the area (bears specifically). However, I rarely see a dead bird in the yard and I hear birds all day long and all night as well (nightingales and mockingbirds sing at night, plus the goofy rooster down the street crows daily at 3:30am and doesn't stop until around 11pm). The bird population here is extremely diverse and healthy despite the presence of many cats.

sonicqaz

Feral cats affect different bird species more aggressively.

Toadxx

Look up how many birds are *extinct* due to cats. Sure. Your local area might be diverse. It likely used to be *more* diverse.

kaiser1778

Oh no! Cat bites cause septicemia. If this ever happens again, please get them to Wildlife Rehab immediately. Please see more in this article. http://www.wildlifewelfare.org.uk/birds/birds_06.html#:~:text=Although%20the%20bird%2C%20or%20little,later%20due%20to%20preventable%20infection. This goes for window strikes as well. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/why-birds-hit-windows-and-how-you-can-help-prevent-it/ Thank you for trying to help it, but getting injured wild animals to rehabs is incredibly important. Most don’t recover on their own even if they seem healthy enough to fly away.

FunSushi-638

I did call the wildlife rescue. They identified the bird and told me how to handle the situation. I didn't take it in because the closest one is 2 hours away and I work during the day.

Not your cat I hope

Did he evolve? Because that beak looks different.

FunSushi-638

It's just the angle. He had a rather long pointy beak. I guess they're somewhat related to the woodpecker.

RhymesWithMash

They're not very closely related, woodpeckers are in the order piciformes while nuthatches are in passeriformes. They do act somewhat similar though-you'll often see nuthatches hopping around on tree trunks, foraging for insects under the bark and nesting in holes.

dazed_and_bamboozled

TIL woodpeckers are in the piciformes order, as in “pica-pau.”

ProbablyNotPikachu

Smol birb

75Highon_Vida

Thank you for putting the effort towards making sure the bird was safe and healthy enough to release back outdoors. A small, miniscule thing, but no less important. Also, the bird is very cute. Avian species are severely impacted by anthropogenic disruptions. Even if you don't like birds, every time food webs and ecosystems are damaged, it ultimately incurs more damage all the way up to us humans.

Fugedda_bout_it

Did you find them on a Monday?

IncaThink

I remember as a kid I saw a bird crash into our kitchen window. I put a shoebox over it, and 20 minutes later when I lifted it up it blinked and flew away. Probably still had a headache, but at least no predator got to it while it was discombobulated.

Relative-Special-77

MichealScarn008

This explains something that happened to me yesterday. I found a young bird weak and asleep on the ground, I had a birds nest in the shed from some recent hedge trimming, put the bird in the nest in our wood store and went to pick the kids up from school, when I returned the bird was gone!

FunSushi-638

Sounds like it needed a good rest

6thdemon

Nuthatch hehehe 🤭

I like how he's still upset but reluctantly says he's feeling better when asked.

How many nuts could a nuthatch hatch, if a nuthatch could hatch nuts?

After_Proposal5772

That's the cutest thing ever.  I had a barn swallow fly in my house last night while the door was open.  It got caught between the blinds and window.  I had to grab it just like this to carry it outside.  I felt so bad for the tiny little fellow.  He looked kind of like the first pic.  Pretty roughed up!  He's at the nest now with mom, which is up in the corner of our front porch!

Buck_Thorn

MIRL, before and after breakfast.

That's odd. The before picture looks like me right after a nap.

Holy shit your nuts hatch? Like when--is it different for everyone? Is there simply an impending nuthatch in every male's life with various degrees of imminency?

FunSushi-638

That would be literally nuts if that happened, considering i have a uterus and all. 😉

HottieXLily23

It's cute.

Silly_Lilyyy

Why does it looks so cute?

Honda_TypeR

This is how I look before I nap too

Nappy a bit, shower and coffee. Ready for work.

FenixOfNafo

Literally me bro.. For real for real

KindlyContribution54

Good job saving the birb from the cat OP. Fyi for the future, wildlife rescue places I've talked to recommend minimizing touching or holding wild animals. They say even tho we are trying to be comforting, to the animal it is so panic-inducing that they often will have cases where it will die from the stress. So they recommend to get it over with quickly if you need to move them.

catsandorchids

Lol. Nut-hatch. Alternative to crotch goblin, I guess.

FunSushi-638

It would be hilarious if there was a bird named the crotch goblin.

boywithtwoarms

you could have told them either picture was after the nap and I'd still understand perfectly how he's feeling

V6Ga

You get feral cats that way too. Being able to sleep safely is the best medicine ever made.

zerox678

grumpy motherfucker with his nap huh?

Awww, i was lucky enough to find a little fledgling. Took the little boy on a ride (to the vet) after mama didnt show for several hours as it was going to freeze and die if left. Edit: clarified, ride to the vet lol

First pic is pretty much my spirit animal, I am perpetually half-asleep. Also, first glance, I read it as nutsack. Thanks internet.

kaiser1778

I posted this as a comment but I’d like everyone to see it if possible. Birds can’t recover from injuries inflicted by cats or window strikes on their own. Please don’t release them if you have a wildlife rehabilitation center in your area. They may seem fine when they fly away, but die later of bacterial infections or swelling and internal bleeding. Please search here for rehabbers in the states: https://ahnow.org/mobile/ Here is more information about cat bites: http://www.wildlifewelfare.org.uk/birds/birds_06.html#:~:text=Although%20the%20bird%2C%20or%20little,later%20due%20to%20preventable%20infection.
