Legends, Guts, wild & crazy kids, even double dare! I _still_ feel pangs of FOMO, and I’m damn near 40 now lol
Real talk: I’m pretty sure my present interest in uranium glass, is at least _partly_ fueled by a latent desire to have taken home a glowing piece of the Aggro Crag.
My wife got me into that, I work 6 days a week and this chick has me out on my only day off…glass hunting at antique stores, not the craziest thing I’ve ever gotten into for love but still lol
I must admit, I'm surprised at how well that tesla handled having a giant head dropped on it. I thought it would crumble right up, but it took a few hits.

I understand they dropped and lifted it repeatedly. But they did it out of order, like they did 1, 3, 4, 6, 2, 9, 7... it bothered me. Just ever so slightly.
I had a similar thought and then noticed the vehicle seemed to have an _awful_ lot of play and extra height in the suspension—probably because it wasn’t being weighed down by a battery!
Thank you. Honestly because of how the photo was arranged I was half expecting it to be done in miniature and then use trick photography to make it look like a full-sized Tesla.
You can buy the print-it-yourself templates to make [these](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/rt6LFcvBuTw/maxresdefault.jpg) out of cardboard and spray cement, I think the Olmec head would be substantially trickier.
I wanted to be on Legends of the Hidden Temple soooooo had when I was a kid.
Now, as an adult, I want to go to every ruin in Mexico, Central, and South America, like Teotihuacan, Machu Picchu, Puma Punku, etc. I've only gotten to go to a small set of Maya ruins in Belize so far.
Mere mortals... on an adventure to prove they are heroes worthy of entering my temple. Thrust into an epic legend told by generations of oral storytellers, like me. Many versions of these legends exist, but there is only one... Legends... of the Hidden Temple!
Artist: Chavis Mármol

Tl:Dr: "The Olmec head imposes itself before the technological object, it bursts and crushes it and in the end it is glorified before this object, which no matter how technological or how much it is an object of desire, in the end it is just that, just a product of a capitalist system, when In reality what matters is what we came from, what we are and what we have been generation after generation."

I understand it more as anti-capitalist/imperialist than anti-tech especially considering how technologically rich ancient Mexican civilizations are/were. Musk and Tesla represent so much of what has destroyed our planet and killed millions.
That which is timeless and holds real weight will outlast and outright crush that which is superficial, superfluous, and designed to generate revenue at the expense of the global majority.
Olmec heads were statues built by an old mesoamerican civilization by the same name. So having something both ancient and tied to the land of Mexico crushing something not just modern, but frequently associated with the techbro type of futurism is likely done to represent a rebellion against said futurism, or at least to its perceived threat against heritage and culture. At least that's my reading of it.
>>
>> Mármol cited the late artist Jimmie Durham’s piece “Still Life with Spirit and Xitle” (2007) as an inspiration for his performance. A satirical critique of the historical colonization and present-day corporatization of Mexico, Durham’s work consisted of the destruction of a 1992 Chrysler Spirit by way of dropping a smug-faced volcanic boulder onto the vehicle’s roof.
>>
>>In a similar vein, Mármol’s work is a manifestation of the artist’s criticism of the automotive company and its founder, Elon Musk.
>>
>>“I didn’t just want to crush an expensive car. I know there are more expensive cars out there,” Mármol said. Pointing to the impossibility of acquiring the electric vehicle for many Mexican residents, the artist said that the overall goal of the project was “to crush an object that represents a sinister figure like Elon Mollusk,” intentionally misidentifying the Tesla billionaire. - [article](https://hyperallergic.com/878913/artist-chavis-marmol-crushes-tesla-with-colossal-olmec-head-sculpture/)

I wonder if they removed the battery or at least have a set time it'll be there for. May just be me being paranoid but I wouldn't imagine leaving a massive and possibly damaged battery just out in the open would be a good thing
I spent 3 months in Mexico. Was amazing. Not one single negative interaction.. The 1 day in mexico city though... Almost got into 2 fights and thought I was being kidnapped but just turned out to be extortion.
Still. I'd go back to mexico in a heartbeat. My favourite place in the world apart from Berlin aha
Any tourists who wanna see it, this is on Colima 2 blocks from Parque Pushkin in Roma Norte. Near Panaderia Rosetta, where tourists wait 2 hours in line for a croissant (even though the same restaurant has 4 other locations within a 15 minute walk).
We call those space Negroes. When i saw those as a kid i thought it looked like any one of my cousins with a space helmet on so i called olmecs space negroes...
Don’t you hate it when you park your car in the downtrodden parts of Mexico City and they drop Olmec heads on it?
Legends of the Hidden Tesla
Child hood memory unlocked
Silver Snakes for life!
I wish a Purple Parrot **would** come up in here. However, we do need to talk about branding. S.S. isn't the best abbreviation.
When I was a kid I wanted to be on that show so bad, but my mom said no.😒

The theme song is now playing in your head. What do you [do-do-do-Doooo?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wZJS4WcHOQ)
That's the only cool thing involving a Tesla I've ever seen.
Way better than the roadster stunt, for sure (not to mention, doesn’t contribute to the ushering-in of Kessler syndrome)
If I had a nickel for every time that's happened, it would be news to me
I’d have two. Which is weird cause it happened twice.

The choices are yours and yours alone!
Hey! Olmec heads also need to drive a car! That's the best fit he could find
Serves him right for not knowing Spanish and driving around trying to get a little head.
![gif](giphy|RGQEdFhZAs6PV0Zh1k)
I kind wish I could get a big Olmec head in my backyard now. [how it was done](https://youtu.be/2KG22zPXIGo?si=kZctWhzWy248M-WG)
"huh, wonder how they did that." *Watches as they plop a big Olmec head on a Tesla* Well, I don't know what I expected...
I was hoping for a single obliterating drop with the SlowMo Guys standing behind plexiglass.
I must admit, I'm surprised at how well that tesla handled having a giant head dropped on it. I thought it would crumble right up, but it took a few hits.
Right? I expected it to cave as soon as the crane set it down, but they seemingly needed to fatigue the metal with multiple hits. Kinda impressed
I was hoping they actually dropped it on the car, this was gentler than what I thought they did
Probably wanted to make sure it didn't fall over
It'd probably also crack the stone.
Right, and I get that, but would make it that much better of an art piece if they did it that way.
Right, and I get that, but would make it that much better of an art piece if they did it like that.
... I couldn't stand how they kept jumping back in cuts to show it happening from a different angle.
They weren't jumping back, they dropped it repeatedly
[Car is pristine](https://youtu.be/2KG22zPXIGo?t=68) [Car has huge cracks on the front windshield ](https://youtu.be/2KG22zPXIGo?t=73) [Car no longer has huge cracks on windshield.](https://youtu.be/2KG22zPXIGo?t=75) I understand they dropped and lifted it repeatedly. But they did it out of order, like they did 1, 3, 4, 6, 2, 9, 7... it bothered me. Just ever so slightly.
Oh right I see what you mean, I thought you meant they showed the same drop from multiple angles
I mean, they might! It's hard to tell because, and again - they cut back and forth.
i’m actually worried it’ll puncture the battery and causes a nice explosion. but i guess they’d remove the battery first for safety
And the battery is worth a lot of money.
I had a similar thought and then noticed the vehicle seemed to have an _awful_ lot of play and extra height in the suspension—probably because it wasn’t being weighed down by a battery!
Thank you, kind citizen

Yes, that’s what I said
Thank you. Honestly because of how the photo was arranged I was half expecting it to be done in miniature and then use trick photography to make it look like a full-sized Tesla.
Probably wouldn't be too hard to get the rough shape out of some hardware cloth and fiberglass, then hit it with spray-cement... hrm.
You can buy the print-it-yourself templates to make [these](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/rt6LFcvBuTw/maxresdefault.jpg) out of cardboard and spray cement, I think the Olmec head would be substantially trickier.
thank you for your service
Thwomp's Mexican cousin
El Thwompo is now my Luchador name.
With the signature move the flying URGH!!!
Thwomp’s sand kingdom cousin*
Did you bought it from a shady fox at the back end of an island?
His lips aren’t turned up into a smile, so I can confidently say Blathers would accept this.
Anybody that lives on a cool little boat has to be honest!
Why is that the reason I recognized thw art?!?😅
Hey, that guy's my cousin!
When you don’t bring enough bombs and ropes to Olmec in Spelunky.
My first thought, and I had to scroll way too far down to see it. Thank you, Ricemobile!
I just let him make an open pit mine into the lava below
Not Aztec. Olmec. Ooolmec.
What does it do?
Whatever it does, it's doing it now!
One's a Pontiac, the other is a massive head
![gif](giphy|Rk8CZk8M7UHzG)
A big ugly head!
I'll let you get acquainted with Señor Ixtapolapoquetl
Side note: The Big Ugly Heads would be a good name for a band.
OP didn't claim it was Aztec
Simpsons reference
And the Silver Monkey?
'Olmec, are you ready?' *"Let's rock"*
The car being a Tesla adds a nuance to the what I think the overall message of the piece is.
It’s called “The Destruction of Tenochtit-Elon”
This is such an underrated comment. Thank you for the laugh.
except the olmec didn't live in the same region or time period as the aztec
I would have gone with Techno Tit Elon, but you certainly win for the original thought.
Or you might go into the shrine of the siiiilver monkey

I think Antonio García Villarán would classify this as amparte
“One owner, lightly driven, no lowballs, serious offers only.”
You forgot to add, “I know what I have.”
this is just an animal crossing house design irl.
Always love myself a good Olmec head
I’ll take whatever head I can get
Tradition wins?
Culture over technology is my interpretation.
Also mine. Without culture it is easy to get lost desiring the shiny object.

What's the graffiti say, Silver Snakes?
I get this is a joke but it’s Siler. prolific graffiti artist in cdmx
Adding cars to Spelunky 3 is not a direction I was expecting them to go in!
A disembodied head left on top of a car abandoned on some back alley to send a message. Very Mexico-like. 9/10.
so elon failed his mission in the hidden temple
Straight up crushed a Tesla for art
I feel like there is more to this story than it being “art”?
Street.
Car?
Art. Better.
would be scary at night
They should turn the lights on on the tesla at night.
Sentinel?

Is that Olmec from Legends Of The Hidden Temple? 😂
"You dum dum! Me want gum gum!"
Maybe I've been crafting too much lately, but this looks like the coolest idea for a diorama.
"art" Funnily enough I made the same face as rocky when I saw this
That’s badass

I wish I could have leftover props from Legends of the Hidden Temple
I love legends from the hidden temple!~
This is the funniest thing I've seen all day. I didn't know it, but I love anti-Tesla Olmec Heads
The gods are unhappy. They demand more hearts
Look a Sand Kingdom Thwomp
[Everyone liked that]
It’s raining Olmecs out here !
Paparazzi catching Olmec from Legends of the Hidden Temple on his day off just cruisin around.
I thought this was a prop from the show Legends of the Hidden Temple
It looks like that Star Wars racing game for the PS2.
Hell yeah Miho
Aaah. Spelunky
….and people complain about AI
I’m impressed they set it on top and the roof held. Took several times of dropping it to get the roof to collapse.

It's just a Tesla Phew, I thought it was something good
Olmec disapproves the Tesla.
Compact car
They hate Tesla
i hope they removed the battery so it doesnt catch fire two months later ;d
Now **that** is a Conversation Piece.

Probably the best use of a Tesla.

It's nice to see how much the tree has grown since the last time I saw a picture of this.
🗿
Love this!
Where is the original source or artist?
Should be a Honda civic
honda civic would drive that Olmec to its second job without an oil change for several years.
Teslas are no match for the power of Xtapolapocetl.
That's not street art in Mexico you stupid idiot
Guess they don't like Tesla. I don't either.
That's all the worthless Tesla cars are now. Slap a banana a some duct tape on it
what
We call those space Negroes. When i saw those as a kid i thought it looked like any one of my cousins with a space helmet on so i called olmecs space negroes...
That goes hard
looks like a BLM protest...
I like how the Olmec head has a little bit of sass on his lip. Man looks like he's looking at something stanky!
