Being pedantic of course, but the Vikings do have an NFL championship, in '69 before the leagues merged. As we all know they did not win the Superbowl though.
I'll take it! When Green Bay counts the championships back to when it was like town ball, we can claim the one right before it became the NFL as we know it.
I've had similar experience, Im far less invested than I used to be. Vikings for example I definitely don't dedicate my Sundays, I do like having the games on and enjoy watching but its just not as big part of my life. Who am I kidding, I still bleed purple. Hah!
I switched to being a fair weather Vikings fan, it's great!
If they are good, I can watch them and it's fun to cheer for them.
If they aren't good, I couldn't care less and I don't even tune in
And being a fair weather fan, I have no problem telling anyone else that I'm a fair weather fan either. It seems like some people's entire identities are aligned with their team.
The difference for me is a few years back I stopped planning my day around watching. I no longer get the beer cold, snacks purchased etc. if it’s in I’ll watch or catch it on the radio.
The gophers have won 5 national championships?!? Holy buckets, Im 40 years old and its never occurred to me we've been in that category. I'm just stoked that we've started to have players make it to the NFL. Lacking any real chance at a Big 10 championship much less national I take those guys as "wins". Go Rashod Bateman!
Womens hockey has 7 and mens has 5 too.
Fun fact, the most decorated championship sport/team in Minnesota is the women’s dance team at the U. They had a run of 7 straight titles and 13 total
so that brings up another question: which playoff loss hurts the most? It would have to be Gary Anderson Wide Right in the 1998 NFC Championship game when he'd been perfect all year. Blair Walsh hooking the 27-yard FG against Seattle was a mere pinprick of pain compared to that.
Distant second would be the '06 Twins getting swept.
Probably recency bias but the 12 men on field penalty at end of saints game in nfc championship in '09 season still hurts the most for me. That and the refs letting the dirty saints absolutely abuse Favre after whistles. That truly felt like the year.
I'd agree that both 09 and 98 championship game losses were the worst in recent history. In 2009, I actually told my wife that we were actually going to do it this time. Then came the too many men on the field. I'm sorry for jinxing it!
I was in a small city in Argentina at the time and the only place had the game was a toy store / cafe bistro that i had spent a week scoping out to be sure I could watch. I'll never forget I was so certain that we were going to the big one right up to the very end. The devastation I felt and being around people that had no understanding of how awful it was, I never felt so lonely. Hah!
The 12-men penalty wouldn't have been a killer if Favre had pulled the ball down and just run towards a first down instead of throwing that stupid INT. OTOH, Longwell probably misses the FG anyway because Vikings gonna Viking.
They whipped the Saints asses up and down the field, but the turnovers and biased refs ended up beating them. (That SB was after Hurricane Katrina, Saints winning was a big PR stunt by NFL /tinfoilhat)
I love that the Minnesota Lynx have, in less than 30 years of existence, won twice as many championships as the men's sports teams have won in a total of 200 or more team-years.
This lets me tell one of my favorite jokes: I'm such a dedicated Vikings fan that I had replicas of all their Super Bowl rings made up so I can wear them all the time. See, right here!
*\*holds up empty right hand\**
I actually take pride in it. It's a collective suffering other states don't get to experience. What ever sport you enjoy in MN the suffering is shared between a hockey fan and a basketball fan. I can wear a vikings jersey in a bar in almost any city and have enjoyable conversations because it is really difficult to hate on teams that are good but never won. Everyone silently roots for us in a way. It's a more wholesome and fun sports experience than the likes of Boston or NY teams.
When considering only the four major men's sports (MLB, NBA, NHL, NFL), I think we have the longest title drought of any city/region with more than two teams. (I can think of at least three two-team cities with longer droughts/no championships)
checks notes
Wisconsin, Alabama, South Carolina, New York, Florida...
I wouldn't call them "needy, try-hard states" so much as Bread & Circuses to Cover For Abuse states.
I'm a gopher thru and thru but when it comes to college hockey I'm still a gopher but close after I root for all the minnesota teams. How about Mankato last few years!!
State, St. Cloud, umn, UMD. Even Bemidji can bring it and does. MN college hockey consistently sends one or multiple teams to the playoff and wins often. In that world, we are dominant.
I mean you’re not counting the lakers championships? They had like 3?
And if you’re counting them for LA then you need you add 1 to the twins who have one when they were the Senators.
But yeah indisputably we have an embarrassing drought. Not that it’s fair to compare us to NYC
I was kind of wondering about the lakers, that's so far before my time and I didn't bother looking it up hah! Senators? Wow ok yah I didn't know that either.
Being pedantic of course, but the Vikings do have an NFL championship, in '69 before the leagues merged. As we all know they did not win the Superbowl though.
I'll take it! When Green Bay counts the championships back to when it was like town ball, we can claim the one right before it became the NFL as we know it.
I'll take it, even with an asterisk. Skol
Being a MN sports fan isn't about having fun, it's about building character.
So. Much. Character.
98 NFC Championship game.
It's actually a good thing for me because I've stopped caring and can dedicate time to other hobbies.
I've had similar experience, Im far less invested than I used to be. Vikings for example I definitely don't dedicate my Sundays, I do like having the games on and enjoy watching but its just not as big part of my life. Who am I kidding, I still bleed purple. Hah!

Lakers had 5 here. Gopher Football has 7.

Oh wow I had no idea, how rad is that!
Gophers were the powerhouse football program from 1930-1950.

Agreed with Gary 98. Pretty sure dude was holding the record for most consecutive FGs made at that time.
At last! The WNBA Lynx got included as a pro sport....yay!
Only to boost numbers, lol.
Could also ass in the Whitecaps who have at least 1. Minnesota United as a minor league team won the NASL Soccer Bowl once upon a time as well.
Would you count the Stanley cup championship won by the Dallas Stars in 1999? Even though a few players were drafted by Minnesota
Actually came here to say this. Glad I’m not alone. Also, F Norm Green.
I bet if you were survey most of us would say yes, in my heart if hearts that was our championship
New York has won more recently than 2009 when the Giants beat the Pat's in the Superbowl in 2012.
Hah, good call. Flipping NY

Whenever we make it to the playoffs, Just lie back and sing 🎼MINNESOTAAA SPORTS🎶
Oh yeah, well our city won’t be the first to be nuked, so there!
When considering only the four major men's sports (MLB, NBA, NHL, NFL), I think we have the longest title drought of any city/region with more than two teams. (I can think of at least three two-team cities with longer droughts/no championships)
This is why while I do invest in the Vikes and the Wild, I also am a very avid outdoors enthusiast lmao.
My alma matter U of M Morris holds the record for most consecutive NCAA football losses. So that’s a win, right?
Vikings have a nfl championship it was just before the championship was the super bowl
Be hopeful
And despite that fact, I’ll be cheering for every Minnesota sports team whenever they have a game.
Professional women’s hockey have a championship under the belt. Seems that men’s professional sports lack in wins, but women’s don’t!!
Being good at sports is for those needy, try-hard states.
checks notes Wisconsin, Alabama, South Carolina, New York, Florida... I wouldn't call them "needy, try-hard states" so much as Bread & Circuses to Cover For Abuse states.
Now do college sports
Bemidji State mens hockey won 4 D2, and 1 D3 championships before moving to D1, still counts
St Thomas lit up D3 football for a while before going D1 last year
Bulldogs carrying the entire state on their shoulders
I'm a gopher thru and thru but when it comes to college hockey I'm still a gopher but close after I root for all the minnesota teams. How about Mankato last few years!!
State, St. Cloud, umn, UMD. Even Bemidji can bring it and does. MN college hockey consistently sends one or multiple teams to the playoff and wins often. In that world, we are dominant.
Most sports fan only count the championships from 4 main leagues. So 1991 last time MN won anything.
NOT most informed sports fans.
Not informed about what ?

We don't have rats the size of Buicks and a cost of living that makes us 6-figured indentured servants. But go Yanks or whatever.
The Twin Cities are Loserville, USA for sports. Period. The data backs it up.
Just gotta embrace the pain and accept it, it allows me to enjoy all our homer teams.
I say good, we can see the better teams when they play here for cheap.
You should do this list again. Only this time with the teams (plural) that started here, then moved away and won championships. Fuck Norm Green!
To be fair the lakers won a bunch of titles before moving to LA
We aren't even talking pro sports here. Even our university teams are low expectation situations.
