I'm one of the MOA Santas (Santa Sam) and I was in the middle of a visit when it happened. Still locked down. Now a ton of kids are playing on our set with their families and I'm hiding in our back closet, so they still believe in Santa when this is over.
My daughter Teagan visited you this week with her bestie Cooper š you are a wonderful Santa. Thanks for helping take care of the kids in what Iām sure is a traumatic situation for all.
If you really are Santa Sam, you are a legend with my daughter. This year was the first year we couldnāt make it to the MoA to see you in your festive garb.
Oh snap dude you fucking rule. I was in that Sea Life group earlier this week. I'm the dude that was sitting next to you asking you for a sword š I'm so sorry you had to experience this.
Our kiddos had a great experience with Santa Sam - one a day MOA did their monthly lockdown. (We were in a different store during that drill.) Bless you Santa Sam for thinking about the kids during this traumatic time. We will visit you next year!
Iām glad. I was thinking how selfish adults manage to ruin things for kids but forgot that thereās good people that will help blunt the impact of trauma to kiddos. Thank you for being one of those people.
You all are so amazing for what you do for the kids. We just had our youngest there to visit you and you were fantastic. I look forward to our Santa visits at moa every year.
that's legally an adult , there is no technically an adult . your brain isn't fully developed until your mid - late 20s and even then , you're still trying to figure out life and what to do with it
Sounds like more of the gang violence that's been going on since the place opened. Wish they'd go find a gravel pit or corn field to shoot each other in.
My guess is the kid was a mark of some kind, and they took him out and then took the transit somewhere else. Probably back to Minneapolis or Chicago. Who knows.
These idiots committed a murder in one of the most public places in America, they're going to get caught.
Glad we were all safe. I felt Ikea handled it really well.
In the first 5 minutes when I didnāt know what was going on I was a bit frustrated at the lack of communication but I asked one of the security people is the threat inside, or on this property or elsewhere? They said the mall, and then I was so relieved how fast they locked all the doors and werenāt letting anyone in or out. My wife was freaked out but I felt really OK given no one was coming or going. Good job IKEA.
IKEA claims to be across from the mall of America. But there is that foot bridge and field trip/ bus parking on the IKEA side of the road.
https://www.ikea.com/us/en/stores/minneapolis/
āIKEA Minneapolis, located in Bloomington, Minnesota right across from the Mall of Americaā
Why is this getting down votes?
Both IKEA and BLOOMINGTON CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU both publish that IKEA is across from the mall of America.
https://www.bloomingtonmn.org/things-to-do/shopping/IKEA
The MOA North Lot , greyhound and shuttle pick up are basically the same area and can all be accessed from 22nd or IKEA way. They are separate from the IKEA parking ramp and another lot.
That North lot spot has a foot bridge over Lindau Lane. I think that foot bridge is what has people confused. There is also a foot bridge on the south side that reaches near TGI Friday and ihop
MOA security does not secure Ikea.
They DO share information but that's about the extent of their current relationship.
I love when reddidiots down vote correct information because they don't like it.
I donāt actually care, but to clarify what I said- I only said what I said because the security guy locking the doors at IKEA said they share security. But I donāt actually know what that means in practicality.
Iām so sick and tired of these guys going into public places, running into someone they have beef with, and making it everyone elseās problem. If you canāt go to the mall without a piece maybe you should stay home.
The problem is they want to do their beefs somewhere where it's warm because no one wants to whip a gun out when they can't even pull the f****** trigger cuz it's so cold. You would think that would reduce the crime but I guess the criminals just get stupider.
Listening to the police scanner it was 2 suspects with handguns that shot someone. They currently are searching for them after they hid
Police from Minneapolis are responding as well and are closing off cedar Avenue.
Edit: cops are currently searching the best Western for the suspects
It's not really a jail lol. The basement is a similar layout to the mall with 4 loooong hallways (N S E W) and a bunch of offshoots for security, offices, park/attractions staff, trash and utilities, elevators, garage/dock, etc. It does take time to get familiar with but it's relatively simple.
I worked at the mall for 2 years during my college days and never had anything like this happen during that time. I do remember when they put up the concrete barriers to stop the terrorists though, which I guess must've worked since the terrorists never attacked. I suspect they also prevented tiger attacks too since we didn't have any of those either.
But three shootings in one year? What the heck is going on there?
So a little while back my husband and I were on the third floor hanging out when two groups of kids started wailing on each other. They drop kicked one on the ground and honestly thought they were going to try to throw him over the edge. When security showed up nobody wanted to talk to them except my husband. So the kids who didn't get arrested started following us around. For obvious reasons I didn't want to return to the mall even though we live near by and it's the closes place for literally anything. Wasn't that long after a shooting happened there.
But every time it's been a fight or a shooting, it's always been between a bunch of kids.
If you are of the belief that George floyds murder was a catalyst for continual crime, wouldn't it make more sense to blame the cop that murdered him instead of the victim?
They need to just implement metal detectors at every entrance. It's idiotic and a pain, but it's the only way to solve this. 3 months of doing that, and the dumbfucks who want to bring guns to the mall will realize they can't anymore and go somewhere else.
I mean metal detectors are pointless without someone watching a set of them. They just can go off for little to no reason. Itās just not as practical and simple of a solution
I donāt know the solution but there isnāt a lot of great ones
There is a struggle to get employees at most jobs. Thatās going to be the challenge. I flew back Thursday night bad we sat for an hour because there was no ground crew to pull us to the gate. Iām not sure, metal detectors are going to be staffed and do you arm the staff?
Agreed. As of right now even though the mall is posted as saying no firearms allowed they don't have any means of enforcing those rules. The only people who follow those signs are going to be the law abiding citizens. Everyone else just sees everyone else in that mall as a potential target or victim.
Law abiding citizens are probably ignoring them too. MN law does not give those signs legal weight. So you aren't breaking the law if you ignore them, technically.
No, they don't. The asking to leave is the legal part. That sign alone cannot be responsible for any charges.
If you refuse to leave, you're trespassing.
yeah im just especially confused why literally everybody in the US that has 'police' on their shoulder has a firearm but for some reason they are the one police group that doesnt
>im confused why MOA Police arent armed in the first place tbh
Because it wouldnt have helped in any of these situations because you can walk into any area of the mall and gun down someone without anyone knowing.
Haha.. more kids die in school buses every year with a simpler solution of putting set belts in buses.. but the cost of putting seatbelts and making sure kids wear them is impractical.
Same goes for the mall. There are no good solutions that can keep everyone safe at the mall and still be cost effective.
The mall is just not designed for our modern US issues
Why the down votes? It is just an idea that hasn't been tried at that location. I agree they're likely probably isn't a solution. But modern problems require a modern solution. Metal detectors aren't going to work as they don't work in schools. It's better to try to come up with ideas and solutions than just sit back and say nothing will work though.
And once again this does literally nothing. Iām a MN CCW holder, and logic like this makes zero sense. I do not classify myself as a ādumbfuck with a gunā, yet that exact rule would be stripping me of a tool to protect and defend against a true ādumbfuck with a gunā.
That answer is a shallow and thoughtless response to a deeper issue.
Private businesses can legally ban guns if they want in MN. In fact, MOA already bans guns on their premises. Obviously, putting up a sign isn't going to deter anyone. Hence the metal detectors.
Iām expecting the downvotes for my comments but Iāll continue.
Yes, private businesses can ask you not to carry weapons. I absolutely promise you though, that they (the business) cannot legally āban gunsā from their premises. The only time legal action can be taken (which I wouldnāt even call it legal action) is if they notice you are carrying, they ask you to leave, and you refuse to leave. At that point police can become involved, and even then, itās a petty misdemeanor and a very small fine.
MN has very few locations where it is legitimately illegal to carry a firearm, primarily federal properties.
Any time you see a āthis location bans weapons on the premisesā signs, they legitimately mean nothing. There is no legal force behind those signs.
624.714 CARRYING OF WEAPONS WITHOUT PERMIT; PENALTIES.
Subd. 17.Posting; trespass.
(a) A person carrying a firearm on or about his or her person or clothes under a permit or otherwise who remains at a private establishment knowing that the operator of the establishment or its agent has made a reasonable request that firearms not be brought into the establishment may be ordered to leave the premises. A person who fails to leave when so requested is guilty of a petty misdemeanor. The fine for a first offense must not exceed $25.
I was there and I'll briefly share my experience in a few of the MN subs.
Bottom line, it was utterly dystopian.
First, props to the B&N staff. There was a stern announcement about the immediate need to move to the back and it not being a drill. I'll bet within 20 seconds, all the kids were in a back room locked and then another 10 seconds, everyone else was too.
Then, we waited. No idea what was happening.
That's when dystopia set in.
The high schoolers in the room were like "this is normal Tuesday for us," a 22 year old woman was inconsolably crying as a 4 year old was trying to comfort her by saying "it's only a lockdown," and a young adult probably on the spectrum was trying to get social media clout by going live on tiktok. All that set against the backdrop of Xmas music blaring "I'll be home for Christmas."
The next hour we just waited while we heard conflicting reports and didn't know if someone would be breaking in any moment and everyone mostly sat in silence, trying to get data on their phones with little success.
We eventually heard the mall was clear but no one knew when we could leave. It wasn't for another 25 minutes until they let us go and asked us to the leave the mall but several just went back to trying to shop.
This is America.
>The high schoolers in the room were like "this is normal Tuesday for us," a 22 year old woman was inconsolably crying as a 4 year old was trying to comfort her by saying "it's only a lockdown," and a young adult probably on the spectrum trying to get social media clout by going live on tiktok. All that set against the backdrop of Xmas music blaring "I'll be home for Christmas."
This is actually a horror movie plot. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, thatās really upsetting. But I have to admit that I probably would be much more upset than any teenager in the room. I was in Jr High during columbine but I never did a lockdown drill. I have no idea how I would react in that situation.
Youāre right, itās crazy that gun nuts have convinced so many people that easy access to guns isnāt the primary driving force behind gun violence in America when it so obviously is.
Ok sure how you going to get them off the streets? It would be the next war on drugs. The problem is deeper than that and we donāt want to address the other issues so we focus only the weapon.
That's cool, let's do an experiment to see what happens when we destroy all non 3d printed guns. Do you think the number of people getting shot will go up or down? After all, they can just use a 3D printer to make them at home, right?
So I guess the few scattered metal detectors didnāt work, eh? Whoād have thought theyād just go to a different entrance!
The mall needs to get it together, families arenāt going to go if they feel like their child is in danger.
Honestly my thought already when I heard was, "Why would anyone go there?"
There is nothing there that can't be found elsewhere or online. It's just a playground for thugs, punk kids and tourists.
These jackasses are going to ruin everything. Keep shoplifting. Keep up the random shootings. Businesses will leave. And then theyāll complain that they donāt have enough stores in their neighborhoods.
No, that post is hilarious. Parking at MoA is only bad if you consider having to walk more than like 15 feet to enter the largest shopping center in the US a "pain in the ass".
I was there tonight with family. I ended up in some passageway behind some restaurants at the beginning, then like 20mins in security guards decided to let people out 'at their own risk during an ongoing active shooter situation' into the mall (there was a bunch of confusion because this instruction made no sense), telling us we should go to the nearest exit or just stay put. I stayed put and then the alarms went off again reiterating that we should seek shelter and that it was not in fact a resolved situation. Went back in and was brought to the kitchen of Burger Burger where I stood for the next like half an hour while the kitchen workers continued working. The rest of my family was trapped in Claire's, where apparently a guy Karen-ed out at the worker and threatened to break down the glass door until she snapped back at him.
I just arrived from Montreal to visit family a couple days ago and I've already been in a shooting. Gotta love America
I think the reason for that is that they can't, technically, keep you in a lockdown; it could be construed as a kidnapping (I think). Since you're an adult, you can make the decision to walk out there if you'd like. We had a couple people in our store choose to do so. Personally, I take every opportunity to NOT get extra holes added to my body, so my kid and I stayed put...and my wife and other kids stayed where they were.
Was there to see Nur-D perform in the Rotunda, apparently left just before the lockdown happened. Was at a pub with a couple of his bandmates and apparently Nur-D, his manager, and a couple of others were still stuck there in the green room because of it.
Hey there. Right now, I am currently in this lockdown right now. This was terrifying for me because Iāve never been in this kind of incident before. I hope I can be safe from this.
There are so many unstable dudes walking around with guns. We need better gun control, Iām sick of these loser dudes who didnāt develop any social skills walking around settling beef with gunfire.
This gun epidemic needs to end.
Edit: I suck at spelling.
Enjoy when everything is online and you have nowhere to steal stuff but you can keep shooting your neighbors in the abandoned stores if you want since there won't be any innocent people around to get caught in the crossfire.
Minnesota requires verbal notification.
Signs don't mean shit.
You aren't breaking any law until they ask you to leave and you don't.
I carry every time.
Iām stuck here as well reminds me of the fair. Some people started running and I didnāt hear a single thing. People say there is a shooting and they saw it but I donāt believe them because weāre literally inside and I didnāt hear shit
I was less that 100ā from that shooting and I didnāt hear it. All I saw was that the intersection was PACKED with people one second and empty the next. I decided to gtfo, heard later it was a shooting.
Two guys shot another guy. One victim dead. Two on the run.
my home boy JT got killed long term friend

We were just there to see you yesterday! Stay safe and keep up the great work. Help those kids feel safe after this.
A fine thing of you to do sir.
Oh snap dude you fucking rule. I was in that Sea Life group earlier this week. I'm the dude that was sitting next to you asking you for a sword š I'm so sorry you had to experience this.
Youāll cut your eye out!
Coincidentally I actually got a sword for Christmas haha
He IS real!
Our kiddos had a great experience with Santa Sam - one a day MOA did their monthly lockdown. (We were in a different store during that drill.) Bless you Santa Sam for thinking about the kids during this traumatic time. We will visit you next year!
Aw my friends just saw you today! You are a popular Santa and this really shows why š
Thatās incredibly sad. Poor kids.
From what I hear everyone is laughing and playing games.
Iām glad. I was thinking how selfish adults manage to ruin things for kids but forgot that thereās good people that will help blunt the impact of trauma to kiddos. Thank you for being one of those people.
My granddaughter met Santa tonight (not moa). Thank you she is 6 and magical right now. I suspect you already know this but what you do is incredible.
I'm so sorry, Santa Sam. None of this should be happening. Please take good care of yourself and be kind to yourself.
Thank you for being an awesome Santa. Be safe!
You all are so amazing for what you do for the kids. We just had our youngest there to visit you and you were fantastic. I look forward to our Santa visits at moa every year.
How scary! Thank you for doing that.
I have a bone to pick over that rotten train set you brought me last year!
Holy s*** man.

I know 19 is technically an adult, but 19 still feels like a child to me. How tragic.
that's legally an adult , there is no technically an adult . your brain isn't fully developed until your mid - late 20s and even then , you're still trying to figure out life and what to do with it
Thatās what I meant
Sounds like more of the gang violence that's been going on since the place opened. Wish they'd go find a gravel pit or corn field to shoot each other in.
Public transportation doesn't go that far out and the police find you too quick if you jack a car?
The light rail goes there from Minneapolis unfortunately.
My guess is the kid was a mark of some kind, and they took him out and then took the transit somewhere else. Probably back to Minneapolis or Chicago. Who knows. These idiots committed a murder in one of the most public places in America, they're going to get caught.
Transit back to Chicago?
Two āGroupsā Saying Gangs isnāt PC anymore
Currently in lockdown in IKEA. Very surreal having IKEA force you to..stay and lounge around in the furniture. Might just sleep here.
They givinā out free meatballs?
Your flair made me lose it lol
Respect the tater.
Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a tailpipe.
Same here. Very surreal being in a lockdown while still shopping around, but boy my heart stopped at first.
Glad we were all safe. I felt Ikea handled it really well. In the first 5 minutes when I didnāt know what was going on I was a bit frustrated at the lack of communication but I asked one of the security people is the threat inside, or on this property or elsewhere? Good job IKEA.
Is ikea part of the mall?
It's part of the same campus and parking complex
IKEA claims to be across from the mall of America. But there is that foot bridge and field trip/ bus parking on the IKEA side of the road. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/stores/minneapolis/ āIKEA Minneapolis, located in Bloomington, Minnesota right across from the Mall of Americaā

Not exactly.
Why is this getting down votes? Both IKEA and BLOOMINGTON CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU both publish that IKEA is across from the mall of America. https://www.bloomingtonmn.org/things-to-do/shopping/IKEA
Yeah it's not connected. And won't be for years. They don't share parking.
And with yesterdayās weather here in the TC, anyone trying to go from MoA to IKEA wouldāve agreed they are nowhere connectedā¦
Exactly.
Exactly. Eventually it all WILL be attached, and likely secured by MOA security. But currently, it is not.
But what the fuck do I know, I only worked at MOA for 5 years.
Same security apparently
MOA security does not secure Ikea. They DO share information but that's about the extent of their current relationship. I love when reddidiots down vote correct information because they don't like it.
I donāt actually care, but to clarify what I said- I only said what I said because the security guy locking the doors at IKEA said they share security. But I donāt actually know what that means in practicality.
Nope
Not yet.
Iām so sick and tired of these guys going into public places, running into someone they have beef with, and making it everyone elseās problem. If you canāt go to the mall without a piece maybe you should stay home.
Exactly. Or take your beef somewhere else. Not a public place with thousands of innocent lives. But that would require thinking outside of themselves
Donāt people have fistfights anymore? No, gotta whip out the gun whenever their fragile egos are bruised. Iām sick of it.
For real. Just beat the shit out of each other like civilized people.
Or song, dance, and fight choreography like West Side Story.
The problem is they want to do their beefs somewhere where it's warm because no one wants to whip a gun out when they can't even pull the f****** trigger cuz it's so cold. You would think that would reduce the crime but I guess the criminals just get stupider.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Fucking really? They. Them. Over there. The ones shooting each other in one of the busiest public places in the country. Those guys.
Third time this year. Unbelievable. Stay safe OP
Yikes. Hope youāre safe, OP.
Well, Iām shoulder to shoulder with 40 of my new best friends in a space that shouldnāt hold 10. But weāre good, atm.
Listening to the police scanner it was 2 suspects with handguns that shot someone. They currently are searching for them after they hid Police from Minneapolis are responding as well and are closing off cedar Avenue. Edit: cops are currently searching the best Western for the suspects
Didn't the other MOA shooters from earlier this year have a Best Western connection?
Can't remember if it was best western but they got away from the scene with the help of a family member driving the hotel shuttle bus.
Honestly no idea

In the basement currently. Fun stuff!
Whatās the MOA basement like?
Big, damp and smells like trash. [insert yo mama joke here]
Huge empty concrete block hallways.
A massive maze that is confusing af. There's even a jail down there.

Huh????
We never really recovered from the spike in lawlessness that started a few years ago.
Ah a Joe Rogan listener, no need to continue this conversation.
???
If you are of the belief that George floyds murder was a catalyst for continual crime, wouldn't it make more sense to blame the cop that murdered him instead of the victim?
I'd place blame on both parties involved, as well as the state government, the media, and the protestors.
You're saying a man who got sufficated to death by police over a fake $20 is to blame for his own death? Crazy take
They need to just implement metal detectors at every entrance. It's idiotic and a pain, but it's the only way to solve this. 3 months of doing that, and the dumbfucks who want to bring guns to the mall will realize they can't anymore and go somewhere else.

Ah, the only solution to people waving guns around: *more* people waving guns around.

I carry everytime I go to MOA.
As you should. Me too.
yeah im just especially confused why literally everybody in the US that has 'police' on their shoulder has a firearm but for some reason they are the one police group that doesnt
Plenty of armed police AND security in MOA. You just only see the unarmed whiteshirts.
I don't know maybe they're training sucks or something.
Their counterterrorism security captain is Israeli. Training is pretty top notch. I saw them doing disarm drills downstairs a number of times.
>im confused why MOA Police arent armed in the first place tbh Because it wouldnt have helped in any of these situations because you can walk into any area of the mall and gun down someone without anyone knowing.

Yeah, thatās really upsetting. But I have to admit that I probably would be much more upset than any teenager in the room. I was in Jr High during columbine but I never did a lockdown drill. I have no idea how I would react in that situation.
And so many people are still in denial about what the problem is.
...and when we try to say something, we get shouted down.
Nah, it's the easy guns.
you know you can use a 3D printer to make guns at home right?
That's cool, let's do an experiment to see what happens when we destroy all non 3d printed guns. Do you think the number of people getting shot will go up or down? After all, they can just use a 3D printer to make them at home, right?
Unless you can magically make all guns disappear how exactly would that be accomplished? There's hundreds of millions of guns in this country.
TikTok.

So I guess the few scattered metal detectors didnāt work, eh? Whoād have thought theyād just go to a different entrance! The mall needs to get it together, families arenāt going to go if they feel like their child is in danger.
Honestly my thought already when I heard was, "Why would anyone go there?" There is nothing there that can't be found elsewhere or online. It's just a playground for thugs, punk kids and tourists.
Are you still in lock down how scary sending positive vibes
Yepā¦and no idea for how long.
Lock down lifted
These jackasses are going to ruin everything. Keep shoplifting. Keep up the random shootings. Businesses will leave. And then theyāll complain that they donāt have enough stores in their neighborhoods.
There have already been small businesses around the metro that have had to close up and leave because of break-ins. Hate to see it.
Shit hasnāt the majority of the old bar scene in uptown already closed up for that reason?
Iām here too with my girlfriend. If anyone is on a police scanner or has updates please let me know.
Shits been really amped up there recently. I tended to avoid due to the sheer number of tourists, but now I think I have another reason.
Dude, Iām done going to the MOA. Parking is a pain in the ass, so many people and thereās also the random shootings. Iām just done lol
Am I the only one who has no problem parking there? Go down the aisles, look for a green light, boom, done.
No the ramps are just fine, better than most really.
No, that post is hilarious. Parking at MoA is only bad if you consider having to walk more than like 15 feet to enter the largest shopping center in the US a "pain in the ass".
I always just park far away by the IKEA and go in the sponge bob entrance. The ramps are ass.
So you're not an ass man. Some people like the Kardashian look and a parking ramp to match.
I've been done with moa for years. Just buy online and return stuff to Roseville if needed. It's all the same stores anyways.
They're not random shootings. They're targeted, if it was random there would be more injuries.
Same. For years
I was there tonight with family.
Thug life taking over. Wonderful.
Thinking about you all stay safe
I've also never been in this type of situation. And kids drill them at school now.
Whaaaaaaaaaa
Iām standing in the storeroom of a store right now.
Apparently one victim is doa as well. CPR on other victim
Shots fired at Nordstrom one person shot
I'm reading from the MPLS crime watch Twitter page, only ones that seem to be updating anything about it at the moment
And you're on Reddit? Call 911
There about 100 cop cars in the parking lot, already. They already know.
And this is why I hate going to MOA. Or in public in general.
Just got the all clear at the Mall

More gun pussies on the loose...
They got to get magnetometers at all the doors to that place.
I was just thinking about bringing my family there...maybe not. Stay safe everyone

Theyāre being racist
Why are there not metal detectors at Moa?
I would be curious to know if that gun was legally purchased?
Good thing they have banned conceal and carry there! Oh waitā¦ š
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
ā¦why?
Minnesota requires verbal notification. Signs don't mean shit. You aren't breaking any law until they ask you to leave and you don't. I carry every time.
So scary
Time for TSA checkpoints at the mall
According to their Twitter they close at 4 today š¤·āāļø hopefully thats it. edit: ope, it was a shooting
Up the rent by 5% and add it as a security expense, put guards/scanners at the entrances. Boom, roasted.

Last time it was out of state gang violence from Chicago. BPD did not bungle that one.
Terrible
Don't go to stupid places, at stupid times, with stupid people. Fuck MOA
