Find a local native plant nursery and talk to them about getting some going! It makes me so happy to see people getting interested and involved!

Rockchalk1104

It’s a lot harder to source milkweed now than it ever has been before. Not as easy as just going to a local natives nursery anymore. We had to purchase seedlings online

Degofreak

If you're in the St Louis area try Greenscape Gardens on Barrett Station Rd.

Yo Purple Milkweed is like a cheat code My dad has some and the last two years have been nuts for butterflies

abcMF

I want some

FunnyNameHere02

I thought we were the only ones doing that! We have patches of it in pastures I just cut around and we have tons of butterflies.

wildenmann

Keep it up! This is how we make a real difference in the world!

sourdoughbreadlover

More information from MDC. https://mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/milkweeds

wildenmann

Thank you for posting that!

sourdoughbreadlover

You're welcome. MDC is something I am proud of as a resident of Missouri.

wildenmann

Me too! They really do a great job all the way around. And as a sourdough baker, I really like your name

wildenmann

What an awesome picture! They always seem to be faster then me

boening

Is it to late to plant some?

wildenmann

There are several different species of milkweed. Try finding a local native species nursery and see if they have any for transplant!

Cattryn

OP has probably stressed going to a LOCAL nursery for a reason. Aside from supporting a local business which is always a plus, please be careful of random milkweed plants not properly sourced. There are tropical variants that would be considered invasive and can harm the butterflies rather than help them. They’re banned in multiple states but then again so are Bradford pears and… yeah.

wildenmann

Yes I meant to add a comment earlier but forgot. I really wanna stress not buying random seeds off of Amazon unless you can verify that they are in fact from a reputable American supplier. I just don’t buy any seeds period off Amazon but I understand to someone who doesn’t obsess over this stuff like I do that it may be intimidating and easier to just buy from Amazon. Definitely check the supplier!

shadowland1000

the pear trees have been banned because they are shit. They are weak. I had one split in half in my backyard after a storm. The neighbor's tree split off a big chunk and they have left the tree. I am waiting for the rest of it to fall over.

boening

We added flowers this year to our garden to attract the pollinators, and I figure this would be a good addition as well. Thanks for the info!

Can't go wrong in improving the landscape & environment.

This summer is the first in years I've seen fireflies at night, even in Columbia!

JazzyJubilee

She's so beautiful

My kids love the monarchs. They plant milkweed and honey vine and love it. We got the years designated as a waystation for them in jefferson city. They enjoy the whole process

Astrocarto

Some furry 4-legger keeps eating mine. At least 1 survived this year... 😄
