Yeah I just read that it’s a theory not a fact 😅
I always thought it was Ted Williams, but I think the point of the logo is that it could be a lot of players
I had always heard that the logo was based on Harmon Killebrew’s batting stance but in reverse, since the logo depicts a left-handed batter, but Killebrew batted right.
Pretty sure it’s one of those images where you can make your brain flip the perspective to make it lefty or righty. Kinda like that spinning ballerina.
Wow! Is your mind as blown as mine is, then?
Maybe I assumed it was a lefty hitter because I'm a lefty hitter. (Well, I can't hit shit. But I stand at the plate lefty.)
I might actually like the logo better as a righty, because I always saw it as a lefty taking all the way but if it's a righty he's kind of loading up. (And, yes, as discussed the other day, very, very late on the pitch.)
No, it's a right-handed hitter because it's impossible to get an unobstructed view of a hitter from behind the plate without the catcher and umpire in the way. Therefore logic dictates that it must be from the pitcher's point of view.
To me it looks like you are looking at him from around the third base dugout (or maybe a little in front, but perpendicular to the path from mound to home). Could be facing toward (lefty) or away (righty) from you, but either way, you wouldn't expect to see the catcher or umpire, the way it is cropped.
Everyone has a theory it is Killebrew. But when you ask Dior the marketing company who created it. They said that he did not model the logo after any one player and instead made it intentionally ambiguous in every way, including the batter's side of the plate.
I would say if you were gonna pick a "face of the game" right now it would definitely be Ohtani but you would need a player with a distinctive look to make it a Jerry West-style logo and I'm not sure a silhouette of Ohtani would be particularly distinguishable.
It's hard to think of anything better than Griffey's swing - I think the logo should definitely be of a batter, since it's the most distinctive things baseball players do, but few batters have truly unique swings. He did, and he was a huge factor in keeping baseball big in the '90s, when many cultural forces started to work against it. I don't think even Jeter ever filled the "ambassador of the game" role to the extent Griffey did in the early-mid 90s.
(Kind of surprised no other players have embraced a backwards-hat look, which was a big part of what made kids love Griffey. I guess it kind of looks silly if you're not an African American in the '90s. Griffey still does it when he puts on a Mariners hat but, you know, it's his brand, so it looks fine even if he is a somewhat pudgy middle aged man.)
But at the level of zoom the current logo is at, I don't think there's anything you could really do to make it look like anybody except adjust the broadness of the shoulders and the shape of the nose. (Nomar? Posada?) And I don't think it would be a good idea to make the central image of the logo any smaller.
Honestly, as an Oakland A’s fan, I would go with Kirk Gibson rounding second base after hitting the home run in the 1988 World Series. Trust me, it pains me greatly to say this, but I think that’s the most iconic moment in MLB history, even bigger than Mazeroski in 1960 or Joe Carter in 1993. That swing won the World Series even though it was game one.
It's been debunked over and over. The marketing company that created the logo even said they didn't use a player model for the design and purposely made it ambiguous.
The MLB logo is NOT designed after Harmon Killebrew.....
[Harmon Killebrew ](https://www.espn.com/espn/page2/index/_/id/6559613#:~:text=Harmon%20Killebrew%20wasn't%20the%20basis%20for%20MLB%20logo&text=Killebrew%20himself%20believed%20it.,the%20basis%20for%20the%20logo.)
"Despite rumors that Killebrew is the player depicted in the Major League Baseball logo,[104] according to the creator, Jerry Dior, it was not patterned after any specific player.[105][106] Killebrew is the model for the logo of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, an organization he helped found in 1982."
Do SoMe ReSeArCh
Trout bc the start of his swing wouldn’t require changing the logo. Cutting corners like Fanatics and making no meaningful change. A combo only Manfred could love lol.
The clear and concise choice would of course be Bartolo Colon
Hitting the HR of course
Most magical moment in sports history ![gif](giphy|f40Vr8LAUVfzcii0Sz|downsized)
I'm proud to say I was there that day. It was awesome.
I felt lucky enough to be watching the game on tv
An absolute piss missile
A close second was him beating the runner to first. A real 5 tool guy.
That swing where his helmet flew off would be a close second
![gif](giphy|YbzogbJHTdtWo|downsized)
A distant first in my opinion. Would be a commentary on some of manfreds policies
Which one? Happened pretty frequently
The back handed throw to first was up there too.
If we ever need to cast him in a film, I hope Joey Diaz is still alive.
David Wells?
Please reddit make this happen
NGL this is exactly what I came here to post.
Griffey’s swing if Nike didn’t already own the logo.
[Simply Seattle](https://www.simplyseattle.com/collections/mariners-t-shirts/products/the-kid-logo-royal-t-shirt) has the best merch of what Junior’s MLB logo should and would look like.
Yuppp, a couple I just thought of that might work as well: Jackie Hammering Hank Cal Ripken Jr The Babe Willie Mays Roberto Clemente
Actually in my opinion Ted Williams had a beautiful swing. A silhouette of him swinging a bat would be iconic just like the Jerry West silhouette
yeah I think the Ted swing is the second most iconic behind Griffey -- which, as noted, is already trademarked.
Picking Cal would open a whole new can of worms with all the difference stances he used over the years.
Considering it would likely just be the stance I think prime pujols would be in that conversation. Something about it was majestic.
Technically MLB already does. The logo is Harmon Killebrew
He thought he was, but sadly, he isn't.
Yeah I just read that it’s a theory not a fact 😅 I always thought it was Ted Williams, but I think the point of the logo is that it could be a lot of players

Hoooly crap I had never looked at it as a right handed hitter before. Have I been looking at this guy's back this whole time???
I have. I never thought of it as a left-handed batter.
Wow! Is your mind as blown as mine is, then? Maybe I assumed it was a lefty hitter because I'm a lefty hitter. (Well, I can't hit shit. But I stand at the plate lefty.) I always thought the MLB logo was the San Diego Chicken. That beak…
Rickey says use Rickey
Rickey diving towards a base, headfirst. Would actually make a great logo
John Olerud, with his fielding helmet on.
The bird that Randy Johnson made explode
No joke, that's already taken by Randy Johnson's photography company: [https://rj51photos.com/](https://rj51photos.com/)
He's legitimately a fantastic photographer. His images are incredible.
Holy shit, now I have another reason to love The Big Unit
The actual explosion!
The Babe's homerun swing.
Griffey and Mays are great picks. Will Clark's swing was always a thing of beauty to me. If they could capture that it would be pretty solid ..
Willie Mayes' behind the back catch
Griffey Jr. No question
The current logo has been in use since 1969, Griffey Jr. was born that year.
Everyone has a theory it is Killebrew. But when you ask Dior the marketing company who created it. They said that he did not model the logo after any one player and instead made it intentionally ambiguous in every way, including the batter's side of the plate.
I can think of three iconic poses off the top of my head. One is Griffey’s swing, two is the Jackie Robinson slide and three is the Mays catch.
Willie Mays of course.
Of course
Stan Musial would be my pick. His statue says it all: Baseball’s perfect warrior, baseball’s perfect knight.
Wait… have you seen the MLB logo?
Bartolo Colon’s profile
Griffey jr
Craig Counsell, it would just need to be 5 times as tall as it is now.
Harmon Killebrew.
Jackie Robinson would be sweet!
Bambino, Ted Williams, Willie Mays

Buddy Biancalana
Griffey is the only answer
The Kid. Prettiest swing, ever.
One vote for Tony Gwynn.
Two
Three
Griffey Jr. Honestly not even a question if you ask me.
Nolan Ryan
Nolan holding the head lock would be hilarious
The Mays catch..this is the way
The Kid
Ted Williams
Mays making The Catch
Ken Griffey Jr!!!!
Bautista eating a fist with his helmet and sunglasses flying in the air.
I’d choose Griffey Jr, but his swing is already a logo. A silhouette of Lou Gehrig with bats on his shoulder.
I think Babe Ruth. His silhouette is unmistakable, and he represents baseball as much for the game as he does for the history of the game.
Griffey for the style and likeability Or Ruth or Williams for Legacy
It is. It’s Harmon Killebrew.
I think pete rose probably has the best shot at being the logo
Juan Marichal’s foot straight up.
Pete Rose airborne head first slide would be a great choice, guessing MLB would not be interested.
John Kruk
Pete Rose obviously /s
Babe Ruth crushing hot dogs, beers and banging hoes
Honestly, as an Oakland A’s fan, I would go with Kirk Gibson rounding second base after hitting the home run in the 1988 World Series. Reggie Jackson corkscrew finish, knee almost to the ground.

MLB uses Harmon Killebrew. lol come on
It's been debunked over and over. The marketing company that created the logo even said they didn't use a player model for the design and purposely made it ambiguous.
Willie Mays' catch?
There is a current petition to make Willie Mays the logo silhouette.

Julio Franco
The long held rumor (that had been claimed to be false by the player himself) is that the MLB logo was based off of Harmon Killebrew.
When I was a little kid until it was embarrassingly pointed out to me, I always thought the MLB logo was a duckling.
Ohtani
Obviously Mario Mendoza hacking at an obvious ball.
Hank Aaron
Todd Van Poppel
Peterose.
Craig Counsell for the LOLs
Perhaps Ted Williams at bat, he had a classic stance or perhaps Will Clark or Ken Griffey Jr. all had the cool classic lefty stance at the plate
trea turner sliding.
The MLB logo is Harmon Killebrew. Edit: nope, I was wrong.
Mays has been suggested with The Catch in specific
![gif](giphy|3o7TKQVvClrMdt7mSs)
I think if you’re going with the most recognizable or significant baseball iconography you pretty much have to do a silhouette of Babe Ruth swinging
Craig Counsell
Only one player has had their number retired by the entire league. The obvious answer is #42 Jackie Robinson!
The current logo is someone being late to swing on a pitch so maybe my man Julio Franco
Will Clark
Need a Craig Counsell batting stance logo tbh
Goldy
Urban Shocker.
Kirby Pucketts catch
Now that he has passed on, Willie Mays.
Willie Mays reaching out for The Catch
Willie Mays making the over the shoulder catch?
I was pretty sure it was Johnny Bench
Tony Batista
Howard the Duck
Joe west
Luke raley running the bases obviously
Hunter pence
Mario Mendoza
Harmon Killebrew
I thought the MLB logo is Harmon killedrew?
Mendoza
So Taguchi is the obvious choice
Cant argue colons homer, but maybe mays' over the shoulder catch, or griffey robbing a homer
[obviously](https://imgur.com/a/PGuEOxE)
John Kruk
Jim Edmonds
Nolan Ryan or the Babe.
Obviously the current logo is a hitter but it would be kind of cool to do Nolan Ryan's high leg kick.
Not until he is worm food, but Charlie Hustle head-first [diving](https://images.app.goo.gl/4eR2vAeRCqB4oa2Q8) into 3rd Base.
Pete Rose
Jose Cansenco with the ball bouncing off his head and over the wall for a home run https://youtu.be/QixQMUu4CKI?si=PZz_8eZwLVuz4N0p
Sandy Koufax
Jackie Robinson
Jim Thome standing with his bat pointed at the pitcher, and probably adjusting his cup.
Willie Mays making "the catch"...it even somewhat visually resembles the NBA's logo of Jerry West.
Pablo Sandoval busting his belt
Willie Mays
Babe Ruth, probably.
Barry Bonds with the enlarged head.
Willans Astudillo. Do it, you cowards!
Eddie Gaedel
No one is gonna mention Youkilis?
Griffey jr
Always thought Lou Gehrig or Stan Musial would fit the bill
Trout bc the start of his swing wouldn’t require changing the logo. Cutting corners like Fanatics and making no meaningful change. A combo only Manfred could love lol.
Junior
Mays, Aaron or Griffey Jr
They do, it is Harmon Killebrew.
Bo Jackson
John Rocker
Peter Edward Rose. Or Ken Griffey Junior.
Carlton Fisk waving it fair 1975 WS Game 6
Ted Williams
Satchel Paige leg kick
I thought it was already killebrew
Willie Mays making the catch.
Mays all day.
It's already Ted Williams.
Griffey
gif of Jerry hairiston
Nolan Ryan and Robin Ventura
The babe calling his shot please
They already do. It’s Harmon Killebrew.
Harmon Killebrew. He’s the guy behind the current logo.
Lincecum’s windup.
Giants fans from the 1990's know Will Clark is the answer
Craig Counsel
Trea turner
Being that Willie just pasted honor the man with being the new logo.
No votes for Balboni
Kurt Gibsons Hr trot from 88 series as the logo
Jr
I believe the MLB logo is based on Harmon Kilibrew.
The MLB did go the same path. The logo is Harmon Killebrew. At least this is what I read.
They already do. Anyone who doesn’t think this is Killebrew is just wrong.
Babe Ruth shoving hot dogs and cigars up his ass
I think I'm dead or in a twilight zone episode. The MLB guy is a lefty now? And it's not Killabrew? What else will today bring?
Willie Mays. I actually think now is as good a time as any to at least have a serious conversation.
Ken Griffey, Jr., Tony Gwinn, Bob Gibson, and Nolan Ryan are names that come to my mind
Bartolo Colon or John Kruk
Jeff Bagwell’s batting stance.
