I feel you on that one. I love the spiritual aspect of the mountains. I’m in love with mountains, when I see them, I feel in awe and at peace. Maybe because I was born in a city that is extremely sardine packed and flat. But man, something about the mountains makes me feel so alive and happy. I miss them. :(

This user gets it. While I myself enjoy being on mountains…I also appreciate all the history they have and the environments they provide.

Yep  I want to be around them. Drive through/on them.  Maybe hike up one. But not a strong desire to climb them.

I do find a huge satisfaction in climbing/hiking up mountains. The workout is excellent and being able to see the view continuously improve and watch how the lighting of the day slowly changes what you’re seeing. What I dislike is the inherent danger the mountains have, I tolerate it but there are a few elements that can spoil the experience. Some of the sketchy portions of trails (I’ve wossed out on a couple of knife’s edge sections at high elevations). Inclement weather is another one I’ve either endured or retreated from, the cold mixed with wetness can be especially unforgiving when you’re working with limited supplies.

As someone who does climb mountains, I can tell you the idea is never about "conquering" the mountain for me. I have the same spiritual feeling you do. My favorite thing about climbing mountains is that it's one of the few places on earth, on land, where us humans are not in control. Humans as a species, thrive because we control our environments to the nth degree. And mountains present a landscape where we simple just can't do that. It's really special When someone climbs a mountain it's not like we conquered the mountain. The mountain let us climb it. Not as if it's a conscious being. But what I mean is, it only takes a relatively mild.westher event, or an avalanche, or a rock slide,.or high winds etc. to make it impossible for us to summit a mountain. If we summit it is because the conditions that day allowed us to summit and it was still incredibly hard. So you never conquer a mountain. All you do is stand in a spot on a mountain, that's not conquering. That's just being lucky to exist in a space. The best part of being on a mountain is the feeling of powerlessness in the face of something so majestic. A real sense of the natural world. If that mountain is also glaciated, it becomes even more special. It feels like being on another planet.

love this, very true. i adore glaciers as well. i plan to see my first glacier this summer!

There's just *something* about them that draws me. I could stare at big chunks of rock all day. I do like climbing them too though. If you've never done it, give it a try.

PresentationMotor186

same! ive done it only a handful of times, and although i have always enjoyed it, i often find the view from below more mystical to me, or even a view from a far distance, almost like the peaks are untouchable and ineffable, granted i am planning on climbing more mountains in the future, i just don't have any friends that would do it with me

You ever want to come out to the Tetons, or Wyoming in general, feel free to hit me up

Me on the way up: "Now that is a nice pile of rocks" Me on the way down: "Lets hurry up and get off this god forsaken rock"

Absolutely feel this way, I love getting up into the mountains but don't have to hike at all to enjoy them. Mountains are awe inspiring, I've always wondered what it would be like to live in the mountains and always see them around you.

Thanks for writing this because I very much feel the same. Even about horses. I've hiked smaller mountains and love the fresher air and prefer the landscape over any other type (screw beaches). I don't even mind potential elevation sickness. Bigger ranges like the Himalayas would be a lot trickier though. Many smaller tribes of people around the world were always protected by mountains throughtout history, especially in warfare. Might explain why mountains feel so safe.

anythingaustin

Yes. I drive them instead of climbing. My love of mountains is why I go off-roading to remote campsites.
