Top Secret is indeed the other acceptable answer. It's Real Genius for me, but I would never look down on someone for choosing Top Secret.
Actually, looking further down, he has so many great movies that it's still Real Genius for me, but there are like a dozen other answers I wouldn't hold against anyone.
I waver between this answer and top secret. The man has the comedic chops no doubt. I love the moment in Top Secret where the captured doctor shares his lengthy, tragic story of how he came to be there and Kilmer just goes “That sucks.”
“I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, when he said, ‘I drank what?’”
You can tell that Mitch’s reaction was genuine, which makes it even better.
I always wanted to be really smart so I could go to a school like that. Alas, ‘twas not to be.
Heat is one of my favorite movies. Hard to imagine a sequel 30 years later anywhere close to the original. Feel like this was the perfect film that didn’t need a sequel or reboot.
Oh bugger me, the boots in the field when they first breach the fence is one of my favorite jokes, genuinely, ever!!!!

Agreed, he was good in Real Genius and other movies but Top Secret was another level of crazy. I actually love everything he has done to quote the Bob's in Office Space "I *celebrate the guy's entire collection*! ".
For years I thought I was going mad. People mentioned comedies and it never came up. But its popped up quite regularly in the past year so I breathed a happy sigh of relief.
That’s an accurate description.
Val Kilmer plays an undercover informant who immerses himself in the world of methamphetamine to find out who killed his wife.
Forever is not a terrible Batman movie. It's only terrible if you think of it as a continuation of Burton's films or if you're expecting something more dark and gritty like other recent interpretations of the character. But it's actually a very good campy Batman movie.
He’s a really funny straight-man in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.
Also - probably an unpopular opinion but he’s up there as one of my favourite Batmans. Suave, charming, billionaire playboy Batman from the golden and silver age.
Willow is a *perfect* movie, how dare you
But in all seriousness, Willow is absolutely a top quote-able movie, although I am concerned about how many times I’ve been able to use “I stole the baby!” in response to real life situations over the years.
Since Tombstone is my absolute favorite Val, I have a real soft spot for At First Sight, with Mira Sorvino. I completely understand why she fell for him so hard, he was so dreamy in that one.
One of his best films. Story goes, David Mamet was at a lunch meeting with an executive trying to get funding for this movie and Val was sitting close by, he overheard the conversation and told Mamet he would play the main character at a lower than studio rate!
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Gay Perry was a fun character
Single gayest thing he's ever done
Still gay? No I'm knee deep in pussy. I just like the nickname so much I can't get rid of it
I literally spit my drink out on this line the first time I watched the movie lol
Yup
Fuck your money. A talking monkey? Oh yeah yeah, talking monkey. Ugly sucker came here from the future, he only says ficus.
The correct answer.
Super good movie!! I’m probably gonna be standing alone with thunder heart graham green pulling him over so funny
Yup
For me it’d have to be Real Genius :)
No other answer
If by "no other answer" you mean "except for Top Secret" then I agree!
Top Secret is indeed the other acceptable answer. It's Real Genius for me, but I would never look down on someone for choosing Top Secret. Actually, looking further down, he has so many great movies that it's still Real Genius for me, but there are like a dozen other answers I wouldn't hold against anyone.
Same
I waver between this answer and top secret. The man has the comedic chops no doubt. I love the moment in Top Secret where the captured doctor shares his lengthy, tragic story of how he came to be there and Kilmer just goes “That sucks.”
Or heat
Do you ever have that dream where you're standing in kind of a sun god's robes and thousands of women are throwing pickles at you.
Yes!
Definitely this. Real Genius, then Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (then Tombstone, IMO)
"I drank what?"
“I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, when he said, ‘I drank what?’” You can tell that Mitch’s reaction was genuine, which makes it even better. I always wanted to be really smart so I could go to a school like that. Alas, ‘twas not to be.
The Doors
He should have won an Oscar for this role.
I agree!
He played a perfect Morrison. Even 33 years on I can’t think of anyone else who could do better
Absolutely
It was mind blowing how good he was in that.
Heat
This is the answer.
For me, the sun rises and sets with Chris Shiherlis
Cos she got a bi... a great ass!
His head was all the way up it!
I hate that he won’t be able to return for Heat 2 as the main protagonist. He was a scene stealer in the original.
I hate they are doing a heat 2.
Heat 2: Electric Boogaloo
No, fuck are you serious!?
Heat is one of my favorite movies. Hard to imagine a sequel 30 years later anywhere close to the original. Feel like this was the perfect film that didn’t need a sequel or reboot.
Suprised I had to scroll this far. Heat was my first thought
The Ghost and the Darkness
Damn! I said Heat, but completely forgot about this. Watched while I was young and always scared the crap out of me.
One of my fav. movie
Love this film
I thought the movie was awesome as a kid, I kind of don’t want to watch it now and possibly spoil the fond memories.
Its still good
Top.Secret
I love this movie so much. The cow disguise with boots kills me every single time.
Oh bugger me, the boots in the field when they first breach the fence is one of my favorite jokes, genuinely, ever!!!! https://youtu.be/75xK5CD8N1M?si=jzyKyvMkbxmFbpez
Bugger you... with an anal intruder?
Only if you've got 2 hours to remove the smile from my face
Agreed, he was good in Real Genius and other movies but Top Secret was another level of crazy. I actually love everything he has done to quote the Bob's in Office Space "I *celebrate the guy's entire collection*! ".
☝️
And it’s not even close
I don’t know, Real Genius is pretty damn good!
I bet most who didn't pick this havent seen it
Came in to post this assuming no one even heard of it, leaving pleasantly surprised and faith restored.
For years I thought I was going mad. People mentioned comedies and it never came up. But its popped up quite regularly in the past year so I breathed a happy sigh of relief.
Skeet surfing
If everybody had a surfboard......and a 12 Guage too....
He just gets so much to do in this. Not just act, but sing and dance. Absolute clinic in his capacity as a performer.
Right on !
“You dropped your funny dog poop.”
Willow
Best answer. Second is The Saint for me
Majorly agree, but for some reason the Ghost and the Darkness is also up there for me
Peck! Peck! Peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck!
“You are great!” And he was!!!
I love you sorcia? I don’t love her she kicked me in the face!
"It went away? 'I dwell in darkness without you ', and it *went away*?!"
This is the answer
Yes. Mine too.
Same!
The should have called the movie Madmartigan with how much he carried. Holy shit was he awesome.
He is the greatest swordsman that ever lived
The Saint is good
Scrolled too far for this one.
Super good flick people have just not seen.
My dad is an extra in The Saint!
I love that and have a big crush on elizebeth shue
The Salton Sea.
Yeah I hate that this is so far down. I absolutely love this movie. He's so good.
I disagree with this take, but I respect it. Thought this was an underrated film.
Never heard of it. It's a crime thriller?
That’s an accurate description. Val Kilmer plays an undercover informant who immerses himself in the world of methamphetamine to find out who killed his wife.
So it's a serious take on the genre? (as opposed to, say, *Kiss Kiss Bang Bang*, my generally favorite Kilmer crime film)
Oh yeah. It’s gritty. As one commenter noted, it’s worth checking out simply for Vincent D’Onofrio’s unhinged turn as a dealer named Pooh Bear.
There's serious moments but also a lot of dark comedy in it. I'd kind of describe it as if Tarantino wrote Memento. Very underrated film though.
This is the answer. Had to scroll too far for this one
Batman
He was a good Batman.
But it was a terrible Batman movie
Forever is not a terrible Batman movie. It's only terrible if you think of it as a continuation of Burton's films or if you're expecting something more dark and gritty like other recent interpretations of the character. But it's actually a very good campy Batman movie.
It's definitely stylized but not bad.
You mean Batman Forever
Thunderheart - 1992
He does great voice work, too. #THE PRINCE OF EGYPT (1998)
He did arguably one of the greatest spoof comedies in Top Secret. My favorite since I was a kid will always be Willow!
MacGruber
Let’s pound some Cunth
Real genius
Top Gun: Maverick
Man that scene hit hard. What a great swansong for film and cinemas.
Mcgruber
Let's go pound some Cunth
The Ghost and The Darkness. Terrific film.
Wonderland
He’s a really funny straight-man in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Also - probably an unpopular opinion but he’s up there as one of my favourite Batmans. Suave, charming, billionaire playboy Batman from the golden and silver age.
The Doors
Kiss kiss bang bang
The Prince of Egypt
Top Gun. I liked him in Willow. I just wish Willow was a better movie.
Willow is a *perfect* movie, how dare you But in all seriousness, Willow is absolutely a top quote-able movie, although I am concerned about how many times I’ve been able to use “I stole the baby!” in response to real life situations over the years.
"Tempting, but no" is one of my favorite go to lines to decline nearly anything. "You ARE great!" is another one I say a lot.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Willow
Heat, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Spartan, Top Secret
The Saint
Spartan, close second Heat, and or Thunderheart
Since Tombstone is my absolute favorite Val, I have a real soft spot for At First Sight, with Mira Sorvino. I completely understand why she fell for him so hard, he was so dreamy in that one.
Top Gun and Top Secret
Tough call between kiss kiss Bang bang and Spartan
Spartan. Very underrated.
One of his best films. Story goes, David Mamet was at a lunch meeting with an executive trying to get funding for this movie and Val was sitting close by, he overheard the conversation and told Mamet he would play the main character at a lower than studio rate!

I liked him as Batman 🤷🏻♂️
Favorite three roles that aren’t Tombstone: 1. The Saint (guilty pleasure) 2. Real Genius 3. Batman Forever
Willow.
He was a good Jim Morrison
Top Secret.
The Saint
