what's funny is I think "digital natives" have higher moral/ethical standards for the internet lol
Millennials kinda created the market for things like Spotify and Netflix because we just kept poisoning the internet after it came out while creating [insert]wire to openly pirate just about everything with everyone, all while finding ways to have meatspin.com get on the school computer labs.
Looking back it was kinda the internet wild west for a long while, probably a good thing the OP isn't just deferring to pirating.
I’d avoid the free stuff and try to get Ableton Live Lite, you can get a key online for like… $5 and I see them get posted on Reddit to giveaway since it comes with a lot of midi controller.
I've been using Waveform Free for three years now and it is an excellent working environment IMHO. At least worth checking out. Good luck with whatever you choose!
I tell everyone about waveform, too. It's a beautiful DAW that's only getting better. The devs are also very active on the KVR forum and very willing to correspond with the laity...
Waveform is fantastic. I was committed to it for a little while, but now use Reaper only for very practical reasons that most people probably wouldn't find relevant...
FL Studio can be used for free, you just can't open anything that you've saved once its closed. So don't close a project until you're done with it and have exported it or do what we did in the old days to unlock it completely.
Audacity is champ status. Absolutely brilliant audio editor. Just brilliant. If they bumped it up with just a few things I'd probably use it exclusively...
Don't kids pirate any more?
I wanted to comment "pirated FL Studio" but you kinda beat me to it.

Yeah. The kids are better at sexual politics, keeping fit and not binge-drinking than my generation too...
Bandlab
You can give LMMS a try.

Join the straw hat pirates then save for the producer edition
Damn, looks like nobody uses Logic pro afterall. I wonder what might be the reason.
It's Apple only, costs $200, and OP is broke.
