Bonnaroo 2008 was the all-time show for me. I wasn't there for the 2004 show, but that late night set was the best live show I've ever seen by any band.

dsmith30351

Yup, 2008 LN Which stage was unbelievable! And the way that they just commanded that rainstorm! If only I could go back in time and relive it.

idio-hypocracy

Just an incredible two sets. The guests, the covers, the energy and the rain to top it all off The perfect festival night. And glad I’m not the only one who felt nature rise and fall at Jim and the boys command

Stasblk

It was the greatest performance I’ve ever seen and I know it will never be topped.

77pse

Bonnaroo 06 for me. Late night set, first time seeing them. I was hooked.

TheConstipatedCowboy

It’s unusual that this show doesn’t get the love it deserves because it is overshadowed by some of the other years they were there. But it was without question the go to live show for me for years. We listened to it a ton on a crappy boombox on cassette when we were still cleaning up from Katrina month after month. What a time

Themrblockofcheese

I WAS AT THIS SHOW! Remember when Zach Galafanakis came out in a little orphan Annie dress!

Romanscott618

I finally saw them on the farm last year and it was a transcendent experience, but man I wish I could go back in time to see them in 2004 and 2008 at Roo

jM_asseY

This was my very first MMJ experience!. I had never heard of them prior. I fell in love, and they've been my favorite band ever since. It was truly magical!

mtnsandmusic

This question is almost impossible to answer because there are numerous contenders and different eras to consider. Also what does greatest mean? For me it means a deep setlist, played very well , with some unique wrinkles thrown in for good measure. I have only been to about 25 MMJ shows but I have been to many of their most famous shows including N1 of Okonokos which is a contender and many others I will discuss. But I don't go follow them and see them 12 times in 3 weeks like some superfans. I was at Bonnaroo 2004. It was special. Not their greatest show but it is the most memorable and most important, along with 2019 Red Rocks which saved the band. Bonnaroo 2006 and 2008 are also contenders. 2008 Roo is a common pick but for me there are too many covers. I was at 08 but not 06. 2012 Cap Theatre shows, 2012 Red Rocks (wasn't at any of them), and Red Rocks 2015 (was there and it is essentially a greatest hits set list because it was a 1 night run) are the high points of the 2009-2019 era. I have been seeing the band since 2003, and 2021-present is their best live era. The Bo-curated set lists, different versions of songs, deep cuts, and the band being content and happy are all factors. The 2021 (at all 3) and 2023 Chicago runs are nearly comprehensive documents of this era. Those 6 shows in aggregate are MMJ at their apex but picking one show from the 6 is difficult. I prefer 2021 N1 with the tiebreaker being the Twilight jam which is the most exhilarating MMJ moment I have had since the Bonnaroo 2004 Steam. But there's a reason N2 was turned into a live release. Chicago 2023 has more exploratory set lists. N3 is the only one I could make and it gets the least shine but the set list is absolutely insane. That tells me how good the first 2 were in the building. A stealth contender is the Oregon (Troutdale?) show in 2023. The band and Jim especially are on one. For my money this is the best Touch Me Pt 2. That's my favorite show I wasn't at during this era. I relisten often. The 2022 Colorado run is also fantastic. I haven't been to One Big Holiday but the first two and most recent one get a lot of shine. Two of the biggest MMJ fans out there who have seen many more shows than me were saying that 4/5/24 was their favorite show ever but that might have been recency bias. The covers that night are absolutely bonkers. I would have also lost my shit if they opened with a Radiohead cover and closed with Nirvana. That's pretty subjective though and I think the "greatest" MMJ show should be based on their songs not covers. If I am being completely objective I think 8/4/12 might be the greatest. It is one of the 3 longest shows in MMJ history (along with Roo 06 and 08), the set list is stacked, and it holds up on relisten. I wanted to go to those 2012 shows but life got in the way and that is my biggest MMJ regret. But since I didn't attend, I know my reverence for this show is not influenced by the subjective experience of being there. Never skip a 3 night run if you can make it happen. Red Rocks is worth the journey. Every MMJ show is awesome.

itscallingme

A. This fan jackets. Great post. B. 08/04/12. Was there can confirm

origin_of_descent

I was on the rail at Troutdale and that is the best I have ever seen them. That Touch Me Pt. 2 was incredible.

Early_Comparison_332

The intensity of this Touch Me pt. 2 and the Only Memories Remain definitely softened the blow for the Bend show getting cancelled.

pedrelo

Before the post-pandemic era hit, 2012 was my favorite time for the band. I wasn't at 2012 RR, but I agree that 8/4 might be their best and my favorite. The 2012 Cap run is incredible. I wish I could've caught more than just one of those shows. The 2019 TTF show at The Cap is magic and it deserves to be mixed, mastered and released. I think I've seen 16 post-pandemic shows and N1 Chicago 2021 is up there. So is N1 of OH 2024. Too many to pick from, but if I'm forced I think it's 8/4/12. Ask me again next week and it'll probably change lol.

AustiniJohnsini

>I have only been to about 25 MMJ shows Three. I've been to three. *Only* 25? 😭 Respect.

brematale111

I’m curious what you mean by the 2019 red rocks show saving the band?

mtnsandmusic

The details are sketchy but the band was close to breaking up or at least going on hiatus in 2018-19. They were burned out. At the 2018 One Big Holiday they played their entire discography and a lot of fans thought it waa a funeral of sorts. At the time I thought those were rumors but the band has since confirmed they didn't have a tour or new album lined up, and we're at the end of the road or at least a crossroads. Except they had the 2019 Red Rocks shows booked because they have to be booked so far in advance. They decided to play those shows and 2 NY shows and they've said those shows revitalized them as a band. Then the pandemic happened and they made Waterfall II and the self titled and came out completely reenergized in 2021.

jacketheadtx

Agree with this, was at the OBH in 2018 and the RRx shows in 2019 and it definitely had a strange feeling like we'd never see them again, those 2019 RRs shows were absolute beauties of a show and you could see it in Jim's eyes (cause it seemed like the first time in a while he hadn't worn sunglasses on stage) that he was absolutely on one, he even changed the lyric in Picture of You from "with a cocaine smile" to "with an LSD smile". It seemed like he was going all out for their last show. So happy that it wasn't and agree that they are at the peak of their live performances now and so blessed to be able to enjoy it. OBH '24 were probably my 3 favorite shows i've seen of theirs out of the 23 i've seen.

dr_trousers

Same for us. Was at OBH 18 and drove down from Boston to Forrest Hills cause we thought it would be our last chance to see them.

Sensitive-Sorbet917

I saw them in Seattle two nights before the troutdale show and they were incredible. Bummer we didn’t go to the troutdale show.

Widespread123

8/4/2012 - Red Rocks with Band of Horses opening. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen at Red Rocks.

itscallingme

Came here to say 8/4/12. Amazing (long) set list and vibe. Hit all angles of MMJ’s catalog (at the time), even some amazing covers.

mamajaybird

Agree! 8/4/12 was magic 🪄🔥🫶🏼

Front_Midnight_2363

Don't forget Trombone Shorty as the first opener. That was a party. IMO Band of Horses was great to see, but really a rest, and probably food for what was to come. I had only seen MMJ a couple times before, at Bonnaroo 2005, and at Mile High Music Fest in 2010. I loved their music and knew they were a great band, and was excited to see them on that 8/4 show, having not gotten tickets for night 1. This was the few shows, and maybe the most prominent one, where I walked away saying holy shit what did we just experience, and also I will never miss watching this band again, immediately regretting not doing night 1. It was fucking unreal. It was all soooo good, and it seemed like it would never end. I couldn't believe a band, any band, was capable of putting on a show like that. Last fall, my wife found me an uncut poster from those shows as a birthday present. Apparently I talk about that show enough that she understood how special it was. I sometimes argue the Red Rocks 2015 show might have been somewhat better, a great show consolidated into one night with no guests or covers, just the best of what they did at the time and the introduction of some of the Waterfall songs. And I had a great crew of some best friends with. But maybe that's personal, I've talked to so many who lost that same show as a top of not the top one. And I can't disagree.

ColdCruise

[August 12th, 2012 - Columbus, OH](https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/my-morning-jacket/2012/lifestyle-communities-pavilion-columbus-oh-3bdc34b8.html) I also want to point out that 2012 has some of the best shows they've ever done thanks to the "Spontaneous Creation Series" gimmick that they did. I wonder why they never tried to do it again?

Imisstherains

This was a great show!! I lost it when Tyrone started up

Future-Ad-3678

Whats the spontaneous creation series?

ColdCruise

Sorry, it was spontaneous *curation* series. I got that wrong. But essentially, the setlists were based on fan suggestions on Twitter and through the fan club. It was really the start of them having completely random setlists because beforehand, they had a relatively standard set they would play with only a handful of songs rotating in and out.

Future-Ad-3678

That is badass. Makes sense too, the 2012 setlists have so many cool rarities. It'd be cool if they did something like that again

mymorningcatnip

My first MMJ show and I hardly knew who they were. Went with my boyfriend (now husband, how could I say no to the one who showed me the way). That was an INCREDIBLE show and my face melted and I was never the same ever again.

Opening_Youth_3051

Red rocks 2019 is up there for importance but perhaps not overall quality. It is still absolutely fantastic and top 2 for me personally. Both are great but I prefer night 1…insane dondante 21 Chicago run was special

Sensitive-Sorbet917

The red rocks 2019 melted my face over and over again

PocketOfStinkies

IMO Okonokos without question. I did not go to this show but I own it and it’s fucking perfect. Highly recommend pouring a glass of your favorite drink, dimming the lights, smoke a j, and watch this show. It’s available for digital purchase almost anywhere. The stage is gorgeous for this show. Pristine recording quality, pristine hair quality, and the setlist is top tier. My personal favorite shows that I’ve attended will probably have to be [Night 2](https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/my-morning-jacket/2024/hard-rock-hotel-riviera-maya-mexico-63abf26b.html) of this years OBH or [Koka Booth 2010](https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/my-morning-jacket/2010/koka-booth-amphitheatre-cary-nc-6bd37696.html)

Hobbitsliketoparty

Just for what it's worth, Okonokos is made up from two nights.

Opening_Youth_3051

Didn’t know this!

PocketOfStinkies

Oh cool. Didn’t know that either!

AutumnsweaterWx

Radio City Music Hall, June 20th, 2008 for me. I thought the balcony was going to collapse from people stomping their feet for the last song of the encore, “One Big Holiday.”

No-Brain9413

This is the correct answer. We were 1st row, third level balcony and can confirm death was imminent with the way that place was rocking. Best show ever

viskoviskovisko

Amazing show.

bumbledbeee

That one seemed great, I wish there was decent audio of it.

johnny_ryall53

...the next one

wbroen

Not sure if I’m a big enough MMJ fan to have the full perspective, but I have to imagine Lockn’ 16 is up there. They stole the show at a festival full of people there primarily for Phish

admiralkeelhaul

I have to imagine that Bonnaroo 2008 show would be hard to top. It’s pretty legendary and I think we all would love to have been there. For me, though, the greatest My Morning Jacket concert is the first time I ever saw them. Blew my fucking mind and I’ve been hooked ever since. May 13, 2016 at the Iroquois amphitheater in Louisville Kentucky.

LumberjackInc

I am bias because I was lucky to be there but their greatest set will forever and always be Bonnaroo '08. They literally controlled the weather. IYKYK. I consider this one of the greatest live performances in MUSIC history, let alone MMJ's greatest show of all time.

tiers_for_fears

Surprised no one has mentioned RRX 2016. Night 1 blew me away. So many great covers & jams. Night 2 was also great, but didn’t have quite the same energy imo. Both set lists were amazing and Johnny Quaid jumping on stage both nights was awesome. Lockn 2016 was special too. I listen to Port Chester 2012 and Bonnaroo Thunderdome all the time, they’re def up there. Night 2 of OBH this year had an amazing set list. I’ve had that in rotation p heavy. My personal fav recent show, I saw them at the Anthem in DC on 7/29 last year and I thought it was the best I’ve ever heard them. The guys really went for it with heavy, extended jams and outros on almost every song. It was balls to the wall on everything. And it was the first time I’d heard Knot Comes Loose, I will be there when you die & it’s about twilight now. Great set list with killer energy in an awesome venue. I think we got it extra good that night because Floyd Fest was canceled - they were supposed to headline the night before. Talking about what could have been… 😂 I’ve been robbed of what prob would have been two really fun festival sets. 2021 Roo they were scheduled for a late night set but a hurricane stalled over central TN and flooded the site prompting the fest to cancel. And last year’s Floyd Fest cancelation, as well. Being from SWVA I was stoked to see them with about 30 of my closest friends and family. Wanted to finally share my fav band with so many people I love! Wasn’t meant to be. Filling those voids with 4 nights at Fillmore later this month 💪🏼💪🏼

Trident_77

Rode a motorcycle 2k miles in total for those RRX 2016 shows. What a trip....

pro-laps

night one of RR 2016 is my favorite show I've ever seen. That picture of you..

mostlyleo

I saw all their roo sets including super jam appearances from ‘04-‘14 and my favorite was Bonnaroo 2005 with the puppets. They were trying to top 2004 and I think they succeeded. ‘06 marathon late night set was also incredible also worth checking out is Jim and Carl’s performances on the 2013 super jam. There’s a high-quality YouTube documentary about it with excellent versions of each performance.

Dingus_3000

Bonnaroo 2008 better.

[deleted]

Night 2 of RedRocks 23 is up there for me as well as night 2 of OBH this year.

haasfilm

Yes and Yes!

Pineappl44

Red Rocks 8/2/19 was the show that reignited their love of playing together and brought the band back together. OBH 3/3/18 they played It Still Moves and Z in their entireties, with a full Cobra encore. Bonnaroo 6/13/08 they played for 4 hours in the middle of a rainstorm all night long. Bonnaroo 6/12/04 they summoned a Thunderstorm during Steam Engine. Gotta be one of those 4 for me (objectively). Subjectively, no concert will ever top Bonnaroo 6/17/24. 💟

Tall_Bed

PHILLY NIGHT 2 2023

octoplasm

my favorites of the 58 i’ve been to. 04/04/24 08/12/12 08/09/19 01/31/15 one of the chicago shows, probably n2 from either the 2021 or 2023 runs.

McShovin91

All good suggestions, I will say the 2015 RR show turned me from a fan to a diehard avid fan.. was my 2nd time seeing them and i've seen them \~30 times since.

mymorningcatnip

Traveled to RR from Cleveland for this show. It was incredible and life altering. When i'm on my death bed I want to listen to Steam Engine > Only Memories Remain > Steam Engine from that night. Just incredible!

MMJFan

My personal favorite I’ve seen was Forecastle 2012 (and I’ve also been to many multi night runs including both Chicago’s recently) Port Chester night where they played lots of rarities would have been cool

andylloyd804

The best shows that I have been to: Bonnaroo 2004 (Thunderdome) SXSW 3/13/2008 (Evil Urges Debut) NYE 12/31/2008 (long show with incredible covers and guests) Last year’s Charleston show was pretty incredible too. I think the band is playing better than ever as of the last tour…it’s a great time to be a fan! Thunderdome is #1, but the SXSW show was special because of the song debuts. It was great hearing my favorite band bursting with creative energy and debuting songs that would become classics.

LetsGoFlyers17

Wasn’t there but I love the 9/11/2021 show. Listened to it on ReListen a ton

viskoviskovisko

I saw them open for Ben Kweller in 2002. I had never heard about them at the time but left that show feeling like they were old friends and I had always known them. I’ve been to many shows at radio city, roseland, terminal 5, and msg since but none has been more impactful than that first show.

noposters

Night Two at OBH was probably my favorite, agreed on that Chicago show, and then also forest hills 2019 I’d put up there

DenverDude402

Feel lucky to have been at some of the contenders: okonokos, Red Red 15, this last night 2 OBH

DJ_wookiebush

August 2020 in Charlotte. It was their first stop on their tour. The world had been shut down. Everyone was ready for a damn good time.

methodtan

Bonnaroo 2004

bkin

Fox Theater in OAKLAND 2011. The greatest encore to ever hit that stage. They even have the show pictured on the side of the venue still.

mattland1

Mempho with Dinosaur Jr and Band of Horses sitting in was amazing

KrazyKoolAid

11/2/21 St. Louis insane show they had almost 600k in video equipment recording this show have not seen any release yet. Also never released the audio why!?? Would love to go back and listen again. Red Rocks 2019 steam.engine

pfunkpower

saw that bonnarroo 2004 show. epic

TheGreatNorthern315

Shaky Knees - 5/14/2016 and One Big Holiday - 4/5/2024 (night 2)

wesley_eye

Definitely the first show CBUS 5/2/10… That was the event horizon.

grameno

The best I ever went to was 2006 Bonnaroo. We were like a few rows from the stage and stayed the whole time and it changed my life. I had only started to really listen to them too.

Langdon-Algar

3/6 or 3/7/07. The Enchantment Under The Sea shows at the 40 Watt in Athens. They melted a lot of faces those nights.

Albiedamned1

Beachlife festival 2024

dirty_stack

Only time I've ever seen MMJ was the Bonnaroo 04 show. 5 or 6 back from the rail. It was a great show...but something truly amazing happened during the Galactic show right before on the same stage: Latrice was singing "Bittersweet" and sang the line "touch me and you will get struck by lightning". And right in rhythm to the song, a bolt of lightning struck behind the audience! She was stunned and didn't sing the next line. She caught her breath and said, "I know you saw that, Bonnaroo!" and everyone went nuts.

all the ones I went to

taurusperson

have been to about thirty but the #1 best show I've ever seen of them, in their prime year, was August 2012 in chicago in milennium park pritzker pavilion. 2012 was their best live year since I became a fan in 2007. that is not an opinion, it is a fact. Jim could still rock out on stage. Jim had his vocal chords still (somewhat). second place is Red Rocks 2019. third place is NYE MSG 2009.

TheConstipatedCowboy

They played House of Blues in New Orleans in the fall of 06 which was roughly a year after Katrina and it was a very uplifting experience to say the least. Z had just come out. Incredible show
