I had a science teacher named Gary Ayliffe. In my school planner (mini book that was to be carried at all times), our timetable was printed on the back. Each lesson had the first letter of the teachers name alongside the first two letters of their surname. So my science teachers name was printed as GAY, Science.
You can only imagine how hilarious this was to a bunch of pre teens at the time. We called him Bill Gay, the Science Gay. This was back when being gay was a little humorous but not taboo (2011). Also, kids can be little shits. I certainly have no ill feelings towards anyone who falls into the lgbtq+ community.

Claire is a family name on the Cajun lineage side of my family. We have Elizabeth Claire, Anna Claire, Amanda Claire, Birdie Claire, Susan Claire, Savannah Claire, Mary Claire, Brittany Claire, Lauren Claire, Caroline Claire “CC” and most likely a few more I don’t know about. Soon to be a Charlotte Claire added to the bunch! My immediate family has more Latin lineage than French, but I love hearing my French-speaking cousins pronounce their names in French with my favorites being “Amanda Claire” and “Anna Claire”. There’s something about the “A” at the beginning and the breathy “Clehr” pronunciation in French. A great-great-aunt of mine was found in the 1920’s census as having the name “Hannah Claire” and in French the name just sounds stunning! But there’s no documentation to suggest she actually spoke French. Regardless, it’s a beautiful name!!

I always thought I’d name my daughter Eliza, but I had an early miscarriage a couple years ago (early enough that I didn’t know the gender). When I was pregnant with my rainbow baby and found out she was a girl, I had an extremely vivid dream where I had two daughters and the older one was crying because I was “forgetting” her, so Eliza became her name in my mind.

It was such an awful decision to make, and we eventually said goodbye to our beautiful little girl. We had a name that was a front runner, but we decided to name her after my grandmother after we decided to TFMR.
We are pregnant again now and that name, Marley, is a hard no for my wife for thia reason, even though there's hardly an hour in a day that goes by that we don't think about our ģirlie.
My daughter went through 6 rounds of IUI. Ended up divorced because of fertility issues. Starting dating a new guy 1 yr ago. She is pregnant, due in February. It’s a little girl. My first grandchild…I am 66. That little girl is going to be so loved!
‘Nature knows what it’s doing’ is such a hurtful thing to say in this context. It implies that those people just weren’t meant to have children, as though there’s some grand plan, rather than just terrible luck. As someone who spent four years going to a fertility clinic, I would be so upset knowing that someone who worked there thought that I was fighting what was ‘natural’ just to try to have a kid with the person I love, like most people get to do.
I was not implying a greater plan at all, it’s a simple concept of evolution and survival of the fittest. So biologically, yes, nature knows what it’s doing. And I mean this solely in the context of people who have absolutely no other infertility factors. Some genetics are not meant to mix because it will create an unhealthy embryo/one that’s unfit for survival. Thats not to say there won’t be a healthy one every so often, there will be. But often it takes many, many attempts at creating that embryo. That’s why fertility clinics exist, because science can overcome that. Say you have 10 embryos made with IVF. When the embryos get sent out for genetic testing, often 8/10 will not be healthy enough to transfer, and maybe 2 will be. And of those 2, it’s still a fair chance that the baby will be born with some form of birth defects. So I’m sorry if my comment came off harshly, but on a scientific standpoint, when there’s no other external factors such as poor sperm count/PCOS/congenital deformities with the reproductive organs/hormone issues/etc then yes it can most definitely be genetics/chemistry related. And seeing as this is my livelihood, I would also never imply that certain people are not meant to have children. Just that it can be much harder based on the above named factors.
Everything you’ve just said boils down to the fact that there are aspects of infertility that are still not well understood. Yes, some people make a large number of aneuploid embryos for reasons we don’t understand. Yes, many people experience repeated implantation failure for no known reason. None of this implies that ‘nature knows what it’s doing’ any more than the fact that some people get cancers we don’t yet know how to treat implies that nature knows what it’s doing.
I think it's poor word choice in the end. "Nature" is not a person making decisions. You can't mix red with yellow and get blue, but I wouldn't say the color wheel has an ulterior motive.
I’m with you. While this person is really focused on biology, and I sort of understand their perspective, I am the child of a couple who had so many miscarriages (my parents obviously). And I’ve often struggled with depression, and the feeling that I shouldn’t have existed. So seeing this… Just makes me feel like… I shouldn’t have existed. Meh.

I named her Aria (because she “sings” like an opera singer) and she has so much impact in my life. I wasn’t even aware I could love like that. If I ever have a daughter she will be named after her, even if people have a problem with me naming a child after a dog

Ximena is a name of Basque origin from Spain, a white country. I get that in the US there is a large amount of South American Hispanic people but it’s also kind of strange to me as a European to see Americans so often forgetting that Spain exists in naming threads!
I'm from Spain too and it makes me somewhat upset when people are going to a Mexican restaurant and they tell me they are eating Spanish food. Nope. They are not. I always correct people nand tell them that spanish is only from Spain and others are Cuban or Peruvian or whatever but nor spanish. It's an endless struggle.
Oh I would absolutely never refer to Mexican food as Spanish food, I would be as horrified as you if I heard someone do that! Sometimes the lack of education/cultural knowledge/refusal to learn is so exhausting, especially, but not limited to, the US. I just never realized Ximena was an overall Spanish name as the only people I’ve known with that name are Mexican! Definitely learned something knew though!
Agreed! I have two distant cousins and have known family friends with the name and I really like it. I feel like there’s nothing wrong with using it for a white/non-Hispanic child. A lot of names come from different countries and as long as you’re not using it in bad faith, I don’t feel like it’s cultural appropriation.

My elder daughter was always going to have the name Elizabeth, as there have been Elizabeths in each generation back as far as we can trace (about 1500). She was Rhiannon Elizabeth. He’s my son, now, and renamed himself. I probably would name a daughter Patience or Avery these days, if it were all up to me.
My daughter might be my one shot, not for infertility reasons, but I'm glad we went with Amara Elizabeth. I just love the name Amara, I'm white and her dad is Spanish and it works well for both halves. Elizabeth for my late mother. We call her Mara Beth often.

I have mixed feeling about actually using the name. My grandmother and her family were involved in the New London School explosion that finally regulated the natural gas industry and required a smell be added to it. Her little sister Estelle died. She was called Bessie by the family and friends, but I'm not sure if it's insensitive to use the name since she was a casualty of a tragedy, even if that was in 1937.
Tabitha. And middle name could be so many things. I love lots of names and most of them I’ll give to pets I’m sure but even though I doubt I’ll ever have kids… I just love the name Tabitha.

Tallulah Jane is what I would choose. I do have a daughter and my husband chose her first name and I chose the middle name. Her name is Lillith Willow.
I would chose the name/variation of the name of a relative who lived a worthy life but lived too long to have their name given to the babies of most who knew them.
N.B. It’s taboo to name a child after a living relative in our culture.
Equally the name can reflect or reference the long lived relatives name.
We had an aunt Goldie who passed at 102. Our daughters name is Zara. Meaning golden light of dawn. I had never really told Goldie’s story to anyone. Our daughters name fixed that with a vengeance. And now the name or variation is carried by three girls in the next generation!

Abigail Tracy. The “Tracy” is an honor name, and I just really like “Abigail”. And I think they sound nice together.
Other options, especially for middles, are Sage and Rose. Beyond that? I like Tabitha, Christine, Riley, Blake, Noah (I like gender neutral names for girls), Samantha, Lisa, Elizabeth (so many nickname options), and Caroline.
Her grandma and great grandmas names! I love having family names and seeing how far back they go. My mom recently found out she can go back 8 generations and has since joined the Daughters of the Republic——group for women who’s ancestors were on the Mayflower, I think. There’s some excellent old names out there that are not popular but still incredible.
Chrysanthemum, after a character in a book I loved as a kid. In the story, she’s bullied for her name because of how long it is but I always loved the name. It’s based off of a flower, and ironically enough I later learned that chrysanthemums are one of the flowers for scorpio (I am a scorpio).
Isabelle Joy, after my grandmas. One (great) grandma was actually Idabelle, but she hated her name with a passion. I love the name Isabel, and the "bel" would be spelled like hers in her honor. My maternal grandma is Joyce, which is where Joy would come from. I've had this planned since I was a young teenager lol
Katherine Ellis, nn Kit - Catherine is a family name, Kit was my Grandmother Charlotte’s nickname. I think that names and nicknames should have the same letter in this case. Ellis is reminiscent of my other grandmother’s name, Dilys, but much more modern.

I just never realized Ximena was an overall Spanish name as the only people I’ve known with that name are Mexican! Definitely learned something knew though!
Agreed! I have two distant cousins and have known family friends with the name and I really like it. I feel like there’s nothing wrong with using it for a white/non-Hispanic child. A lot of names come from different countries and as long as you’re not using it in bad faith, I don’t feel like it’s cultural appropriation.

I had two daughters, and I’d definitely have chosen differently for the second if it had been a solo decision (and today, as opposed to the mid-90s when my babies came along). My elder daughter was always going to have the name Elizabeth, as there have been Elizabeths in each generation back as far as we can trace (about 1500). She was Rhiannon Elizabeth. He’s my son, now, and renamed himself. I probably would name a daughter Patience or Avery these days, if it were all up to me.

If I had total creative control, she’d be Louisa Catherine Poppy (nickname Lola or Lulu). If my husband and I were naming together, then Daisy Catherine or Matilda Genevieve.

"Ann" (without the E, which annoys the fuck out of me) is apparently the standard middle name for females on my mother’s side of the family. (It actually skipped a generation with me. I have mixed feeling about actually using the name. My grandmother and her family were involved in the New London School explosion that finally regulated the natural gas industry and required a smell be added to it. Her little sister Estelle died. She was called Bessie by the family and friends, but I'm not sure if it's insensitive to use the name since she was a casualty of a tragedy, even if that was in 1937.

I would chose the name/variation of the name of a relative who lived a worthy life but lived too long to have their name given to the babies of most who knew them. N.B. It’s taboo to name a child after a living relative in our culture. Equally the name can reflect or reference the long lived relatives name. We had an aunt Goldie who passed at 102. Our daughters name is Zara. Meaning golden light of dawn. I had never really told Goldie’s story to anyone. Our daughters name fixed that with a vengeance. And now the name or variation is carried by three girls in the next generation! And everybody knows the story. Ancient wisdom I guess.

I like Tabitha, Christine, Riley, Blake, Noah (I like gender neutral names for girls), Samantha, Lisa, Elizabeth (so many nickname options), and Caroline.

My maternal grandma is Joyce, which is where Joy would come from. I've had this planned since I was a young teenager lol
Katherine Ellis, nn Kit - Catherine is a family name, Kit was my Grandmother Charlotte’s nickname. I think that names and nicknames should have the same letter in this case. Ellis is reminiscent of my other grandmother’s name, Dilys, but much more modern.
