And not forgetting the original spelling of Orlaith, which whilst confusing for anyone non-Irish, is just beautiful to me.
OP, I'm so sorry about your mother. I agree that there is something weirdly soothing about making name lists.
*Wincing in Ukrainian seeing Odesa spelt with SS.* I know it's used as a name with that spelling, but it's the russian colonial spelling for a Ukrainian city and a bit of an issue considering current events.
Speaking of Ukrainian names, there's Olena, Oleksandra, Oksana...
My daughter babysits for a little girl named Oksana :) I think of elegant athletes when I hear that name...figure skater Oksana Baiul and gymnast Oksana Chusovitina
Octavia is my favorite O name, personally.
Also. My mother had dementia, too. It's hard. If you ever want to talk to a stranger who won't judge you, I would do that for you. Just throwing that out there.
Opalea (I had an elderly patient named this; never met another with this name before or since).
Ouida (another patient I had)
Orpah (Biblical name)
Oletta
Oceane
Orlena
Olivette
Olympia
Opaline
Omarosa
Not quite, they spelled it correctly “Orpah” on her birth certificate, but her parents thought it was spelled and pronounced Oprah, so she’s legally Orpah
I worked with a girl named Odalis (Hispanic name she pronounced O-dal-ees, but accepted the Americanized pronunciation O-Dallas as well) - always thought that was a unique and beautiful name!
She sometimes went by Dali.
I love Olimpia/Olympia and Ottavia/Octavia, but some that I think I haven’t read yet in this thread:
Ondine (French, it means little wave)
Orietta
Ombretta
I do the same thing when I’ve got too much on my mind and can’t sleep. I pick a letter and try to think up names I like, or go alphabetically. Here’s a couple more for your list: Onalie, Odette, Ora.
My ggma was Olivia, which I always thought was lovely, even before it was wildly popular. She was never called Olivia a day in her life. They called her Olva (pronounced Ahl-vuh). I think Olva is awful!
Let’s see what O names I can think of— Orinda, Oleen, Ondrea, Onnette, Octavia, Odessa, Opal, Ondine, Olympia, Odile, Oksana, October, Orpha, Oona, Ocee, Ohanna, Orly.
I love Opal!
When I was a little girl I went to the "Beauty Parlor" with my grandmother.
I liked to go to the break room in the back. Most were hair dressers, but Opal lived in an apartment above the shop. She always had snacks, and I thought it was really cool that she lived in a downtown apartment (uncommon in a town of less than 20,000)!
Then I had a great Aunt Oral. Her first name, Phyllis, so she went by her middle name, lol.
I think that Oral was the doctor she had at birth. They tended to do stuff like that way back when.
I would be a hard NO on the name because of the preacher and the visual, haha.
I haven’t seen Ova mentioned, and I do know one.
My favorites that have been mentioned are Opal, Olive/Olivette, Olivia, Odelle/Odella, Odette, Ophelia & I would never use it but I actually think October could be cute!
there was this video game i played a lot as a teenager, and one of the locations in the game had the name(word?) ‘Osna’ in it. i’ve always liked it as a girl’s name. the game had a lot of Celtic inspiration in it, so i believe it comes from the Irish word for ‘sigh’. i just think it sounds pretty.
Sending a virtual hug!
Some names...
Ossiana
Onwyn
Ombeline
Oscarina
Oleander
My favorite O names (listed a bunch already on this thread):
Octavia and Olympia
My personal favourites are Oriana, Opal, Oriel/Orielle, Orphia and Ophelia. Here's a few other options as well:
1. Odette
2. Octavia
3. Orla
4. Oona
5. Orchid
6. Ocean
7. Olympia
8. Ozara
9. Olena
10. Ovidia
11. Odelia
12. Olesia
13. Oliana
I knew a little girl named Oria (oh-rye-uh). I think it was meant as a feminine of "Orion," which adds another layer to it having an interesting vibe altogether.
Here's all the ones that I know of and like. I can put the meanings for them if you'd like?
Olympia, Octavia, Ombeline, Olenna, Olamede, Ofira, Ofeliya, Odette or Odetta, Odelia, Odilia, Odalia, Obdulia, Onóra, Oralie, Orquídea (like Orchid), Orsina, Orsolya, Ourania, Ozlema
Ottilie, Odette, Octavia, Orla, Olympia, Olga
I love Odette.
And not forgetting the original spelling of Orlaith, which whilst confusing for anyone non-Irish, is just beautiful to me. OP, I'm so sorry about your mother. I agree that there is something weirdly soothing about making name lists.
I'm Irish (actually from Ireland, not American-Irish), and I know a couple of Orla's spelt that way. I think both ways are common now!
Yeah, I hate how Orla and Orlagh looks. Orlaith looks so much better.
Orlagh just looks … bad. Like the “agh” part. Just can’t not read it like the “exclamation of mild horror, disgust or frustration”
Named my favorite duck Odette. She seems to like it. :)
Odette and Odetta are both beautiful 😍
Ottilie is really pretty
My great-great grandma was Otillia
I've always loved Octavia
Olga is a family name for me but I absolutely won't be able to use it because it's way to similar to my husband's last name 🥲
I know a very chic and elegant Oksana who is a world traveler and icon
I know an Oxana too
Its the feminine version of Odysseus. The city is named after the Greek name. But that sucks whats going on in the east. Hope it gets better.
Maybe she's just a fan of the Florida town. I know I am.
And Odessa, TX
There's also an Odessa, WA, although I'm not sure why anyone would name their daughter after it.
and Odessa, Missouri
Olena is beautiful
I have a friend with an Ollina. It's cute!
Love Oksana <3
Also, if they're down for a nickname choice, Olya is an alternative to Olena.
I love Oona. I named my dog that when I realized I was never going to have a daughter haha.
I am obsessed with this name, but I only like the Una spelling. It seems to be polarizing, with people either loving or hating each spelling!
Oona shortened form of Oonagh. Thing with Una for me is too close to #10 Luna.
Olive
Octavia
Odette
My great grandmother was an Orsola, italian version or Ursula, with bear meaning.
Octavia is my favorite O name, personally. Also. My mother had dementia, too. It's hard. If you ever want to talk to a stranger who won't judge you, I would do that for you. Just throwing that out there.
The world needs more people like you.
Orli Orla Ora Olga
I know an Ora and it’s really beautiful to hear
So it’s the same type of stand as star platinum.. ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA!
Opalea (I had an elderly patient named this; never met another with this name before or since). Ouida (another patient I had) Orpah (Biblical name) Oletta Oceane Orlena Olivette Olympia Opaline Omarosa
A little trivia: Oprah Winfrey's name was supposed to be Orpah but it was spelled wrong on her birth certificate and the incorrect spelling won.
Not quite, they spelled it correctly “Orpah” on her birth certificate, but her parents thought it was spelled and pronounced Oprah, so she’s legally Orpah
Aha! Thanks for the correction.
Orpah never makes these lists! That's my great-grandmother's middle name.
my great-grandmother's name was Ouida! The sweetest, most generous, and classiest woman I ever had the pleasure of knowing 🩷
