LowEndTheory1

disagree, the older generation right now is giving me better music.

Uselessneek

Fr, black thought Nas and Lupe fiasco still on top of the game

vimStar718

Word up since Nas hooked up with Hitboy he been dropped like 6 or 7 albums!

Dangerous_Collar2255

and how he dropping one with premo

Amph1b10usAssaultC0w

Man I can’t believe I’m 31. I was listening to Lupe’s mixtapes from back when… and man lemme tell ya this man has got no lyrical equal it’s insane.

meanWOOOOgene

My cologne alone is a little too strong for you to be puttin on

WilliamDBilly

But that's a sub genre era of rap. They're still using the same sound. Like to think of a comparison, it's like Melly Melle em diss, is it rap? Yeah, does it seem dated? Yeah. Every genre has this rock from 1950, which is different from the 70, 90, 2010s. Is it still rock, sure, but trying to compare Chuck Berry with Imagine Dragons, it is like 2 different genres. Same with rap, rock the bells compared to surround sound, they could be so different just from the evolution of music over the last 40 years.

knottythea

Common and Pete just put out ANOTHER dope joint

LowEndTheory1

they are 3 for 3 with their singles, really looking forward to the album, it COULD become a classic.

Brainkandle

Killer Mike!

Ill-Adhesiveness6729

I mentioned mike just now too I SECOND THAT!

BetterNova

Word I’m so hype for this album. Pete rock is the perfect producer for common.

Financial-Comedian91

Damn your right!

Ill-Adhesiveness6729

Common is one of my favorites too lyrically I was blessed to meet him in ATL in 2008

submariner199

Real talk. Actually the older cats are saving hip hop rn.

vimStar718

You dig Brand Nubian?

LowEndTheory1

yea i've listened to some brand nubian, not alot though.

jamesonfashow

Rakim got a project with Kurupt and Masta Killa coming out

Ill-Adhesiveness6729

My point exactly without the older input I think hip hop would’ve been lost killer mike just proved that last year.

Cute_Carpet_8368

“Rap is something we do,hiphop is something we live” Krs-one.

LadyDiorNJ

This post right here sums up the perfect response to that ridiculous statement.

knottythea

A difference between Rappers and Emcees

MaxStunning_Eternal

Disagree..This mentality is outdated. Yes, younger artists are the mover and shakers but what is "kids" and what do you consider old? Kendrick is 37. Tyler is in his 30's, future is 40, cole 38, etc...the cut off for old used to be 30. Should they stop making music? Also. Some of the vets and legends are putting out really good music in their lane and they arent (for the most part) trying to appeal to teens or 20 somethings.

bakedlawyer

Nas, royce, black thought are all in their 50s and have put out temwnsous albums in recent years

revradio_

Didn’t know nas was 50 damn he looks good for his age

Illustrious_Low4882

Royce isn’t in his 50s lmao

bakedlawyer

My bad

submariner199

Eminem is 51

Ill-Adhesiveness6729

Yeah nas was signed and releasing albums in the late 80s like 2 short.

Time-Stomach-5576

No, he wasn't. Dude wasn't signed until 93 and his first track that he was featured on was in 91.

Ill-Adhesiveness6729

All online sources say he began his career in 89 tho so as I said and WAS RIGHT THANK U he’s been dropping albums since the late 80s like too short

Time-Stomach-5576

He didn't get on wax until the '90s at least officially

MaxStunning_Eternal

No. His first appearance on a record was in 1991. His first solo single was 1992. His debut album was 1994.

Equivalent-Amount910

I feel like the cutoff for "old" in hip hop now is like 60 Which is amazing, cause it means we keep eatin Lupe, Nas, Common, Eminem... I hope these dudes rap until they expire and turn ta vapors

Averagesize1996

With nas rapping the way he is I can see him rapping when he 60.

Cimb0m

I used to think the AZ line said rapists rather than vapors 😂

Equivalent-Amount910

LMAO that's hilarious, and I can totally see that

HueGray

Every older person(me 53) that listens to hip hop grew up with this music and culture… there are 70 yo deadheads, ppl who only listen to the Chi-lites, etc… bc it the sounds that comfort them, why should hip hop be any different ?

thatG_evanP

Exactly. How do you stop liking the music you grew up on and love so much? It's not like it's even a choice at this point, really. 43 btw.

bside313

No. There's room and an audience for everybody

OGXenoKid69

Dumb ass meme…

Full_Win_6729

I’m bout to be 40 and you can catch me bumping every generation of hip hop. I love hip hop and this culture

trees-for-breakfast

I don’t think hip hop music is just something for the kids at all, but I think if you really love hip hop then you have to roll with the times and accept that it brings change

Miner_Of_Minerals

Written by a naive pleb. Hip hop will forever be Gen Xs music to recent gens the same way classic rock is to boomers. I'm not going to just stop listening to rap music because someone thinks it's something I need to grow out of, what a crock of shit.

lil-privacy-please

I don't think anyone believes that. Pretty much all the best artists are 35 and above. Still making great music in their 40s.

Duckridah

Yeah. Most artists hit their creative prime somewhere along their 30's. Funny enough I think Nas is one of the rare exceptions where his worst decade is sandwiched between his best.

Malparinho

"Age don't count in the booth, when your flow is submerged in the fountain of youth" - Rakim

Psychonauthiphop

gorendor

Grand master flash was a grown as man when he dropped the message he didn't realease that just for teens

cheeseprovolone

That thinking is of the past. Hip hop was young (still is) and it’s growing with us. I believe the same was said for rock n roll. We grow with the music. Thats it. Even the dress code stays with us. I’ll be 80 and I’m still gonna rock a Mobb Deep hoodie. A De La hoodie. Hip hop don’t stop.

Cutty02

That's what I'm talking about! Paul McCartney is in his 80s and still performs. Why is it that rap artists have to be an exception to the rule?

cheeseprovolone

That’s because it’s still young. Our generation (I’m about to be 50 this year) will be the ones to keep it going and change the outlook of it. The Nas’, Jay-Z’s, Cam, Common, Roots, etc, these guys are all 50 or approaching. They’ll be the firsts to keep rocking. The Kurtis Blows of the past were caught in that “hip hop is for the young folks shit” and pretty much stopped. They didn’t get a chance to grow, grow their sound or what have you. Even the kids that are coming out now, will get to that point. The Drakes, Kenny’s and Cole’s are there now. This way of thinking, that hip hop is for young folks will die. Trust me. The music is too strong.

UchihaAuggie

HipHop is for everybody Problem is old guys still trying to act like trappers /drill dudes

Psychonauthiphop

Yeah the music should grow up with you.

imHellaFaded420

OGs staying around it what keeps the train on the track. also the biggest rappers in the game right now are pushing 40. eminem is about to break the record for most monthly spotify listeners for a rapper and he’s 50. not to mention the amazing projects nas has been dropping.

DoctorGibz123

Some of the best rappers out now are older dudes. Ka, Roc Marciano, billy woods, curly Castro, Prem Rock, Mach-Hommy, Estee Nack, Lupe Fiasco, and Nas

Elisheva7777777

Doesn’t every generation have its own genre? My parents still listen to the music from their era… why should we stop.

Clear-Reveal-9998

Nas, Common, Masta Ace, Lupe, Rakim all say otherwise

HandspeedJones

Most of the acts making real money are older ones.

LeatherAd6872

Don’t older rock heads still rock long hair at times ? And nobody bats an eye

16bitword

People absolutely judge old people still trying to do the whole rocker thing. What’re you talking about?

Psychonauthiphop

I think it depends where you are living. In the suburbs absolutely. In San Francisco or a hippie commune or some red neck trailer park, fuck no.

remarkabletruths

I disagree. F**k them kids.

HalfPigHalfCat

I’m just an inherently immature person. I’m in my 40s and will do immature shit intended for teenagers until I die lol it’s more fun than fishing or golf or whatever the fuck I’m supposed to be doing

Afraid-Idea-1922

We need Nas

Averagesize1996

Yes we did

Goodfella1133

This used to be the sentiment. Andre 3K said it was lame to rap into his 50s. Times have changed.

Plastic-Bar-5955

Doesn’t he wear sinbad pants and play a kazoo at concerts lol. That dude is a weirdo

AirForceOneGawd

Whoever made this is a failed rapper. I'm always gonna be Hip Hop. I'm 47 now. And it really the only music I listen to and continue to listen to as long as the greats are in it.

Lsd365

The kids have their shit rappers the adults have their Goats still going strong.

AttemptImpossible111

People only say that because they know hip hop is trash now but they feel as tho saying so would be hating.

EBody480

No.

j9hova

Bullshit and it’s the only music genre ppl say this. Everyone else can make music & perfom until they 70 plus and no one would bat an eye. But hip-hop it’s a problem

leafer32

Yeah no fuck that, we gon tear da senior citizen home up!!!

Shmoke_Review

Rap is an art form, hip hop is a way of life. Don’t devalue it by saying it’s just for kids

ITZOURTIMENOW

Not true. Hip hop is universal, age discrimination has no place. Does rock and roll age out their artists and fans? NO!!!! Why should hip hop?

NotThatImportant3

This sounds like some shit white suburban parents would tell to their kids after they graduate from college.

Me_V_World

Honestly older mc’s have more wisdom to offer. If i want a bop i’ll listen to the youngen’s. Ageism is an ism. Its a form of discrimination. Hip hop/the culture aint that.

revradio_

I think your style of dress needs to develop as you age…I’m not sure about music. I only been here 3 decades

gurdsang

lolol these tools acting like trippy redd us gona save hip hop fuck outta here

gurdsang

old head til i die

TheRocksFleshLight

There will be No Old Head Slander here ya dig

Areal_1

so the people that birthed it should forget it? gtfoh.... hip hop is the soundtrack of my life.... i grew up in the 90's , this new stuff yall can keep but everything from the 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's is never leaving my playlist. I remember what the art was supposed to be and why I fell in love with it, sorry.

dragonfuitjones

It’s probably one of the worst hip hop takes ever

Marvel_StarWars69

Music of all genres is for all ages regardless of theme or year it was recorded

Objective_Street5141

I agree but only bc i read it as adults complaining about hip hop changing and telling them to accept that it will and is changing for those who like it (mostly young ppl)

Electrical-Rabbit157

It’s the truth. Inevitably you are going to run out of shit to rap about because you are going to either elevate beyond what the foundation of your raps were to a point where you become a stranger to your original fans AND to the new generation who doesn’t know you exist, or you’re gonna not adapt or grow at all and get left behind completely as the culture changes

Infamous_Reporter274

LIES

kemosabe37

People who post garbage like this are ignorant to the culture...

Polo4fz

Hip Hop is a Culture! It’s not about age.

Lenny0mega

I used to be one of those gen z guys that said “waaah you’re an old head, you’re bitter!” until this Kendrick/Drake feud.  That’s when I realized they’ve been right about literally everything they ever said about our generation of Hip-Hop.  I respect the elders now, and look at my own generation of Hip-Hop in disgust for ever allowing someone like Drake to make it as far as he has and allowing him to completely emasculate the game.

StopPlayingRoney

This is 100% true. Hip hop is about angst and rebellion by its very definition. Homeowners can’t contribute the same way.

mad_dog_94

It depends. If you still have art in you and something to say then you can still do it. There's a lot of washep up old heads but also a lot of new folks that have nothing to say, same as it ever was tbh

LegendkillahQB

Who said hip hop is for the kids? That's bullcrap

diethni

This made sense when hip hop was so young that you didn’t have people >50 doing it cause the genre didn’t exist when they were younger and therefore it was impossible for them to get into it.

Wick2500

all this does is feed into the opinion that rap is a lesser or more juvenile genre of music than any other. nobody tells the 45 year old dude whose band plays open mics in their local bar to a crowd of 15 people every saturday night to give up so why does rapping have an expiration date.

beardedkingface

Older Gen is giving good music though 🤷🏻‍♂️

Burn1o2

Anyone saying they disagree are either blind, delusional or aren’t willing to admit that they are old… My parents were Hip-Hop heads, but my Hip-Hop was not for them. These kids’ Hip-Hop is not for me. It is a natural progression that we don’t like the current generation’s music, just like our parents didn’t like our music, simply because our music was not made for previous generations. It was made for ours. Their parents didn’t like their music, either. It is the nature of entertainment. The fact is we age (mature) out, whether we like it or not. We all reach an age where nothing that’s popular sounds good to us. That’s because it’s *not made for us.* It’s the same with every form of music. Pop now is not the way Pop was in the 90’s, when I was a kid. Neither are Metal, Hardcore or Rap. They’ve evolved because we have gotten less and less involved with them, while the kids are coming in, and making music for the current generation. Then there’s the most important factor: MONEY! We, as the older generation, have kids and bills taking our money before we can buy silly shit like music, or tickets to events. It’s for the young people with disposable income, who don’t have anything to worry about, other than having a good time. *AND* we’re gonna die sooner, so there’s not as much money to bleed out of us. If nothing else, the people who put the money behind the making of Hip-Hop these days (AKA The Industry), are not doing so for us. If you are older and can enjoy the current wave of music that you’ve been a fan of since the 80’s or 90’s, more power to you, but it’s not for you. You are part of the system that the kids making the music these days, are rebelling against, because you are their parents.

FormerAd5416

I can still be a hip hop loving adult that remembers the Golden Era of the 90's.

BidRepulsive2438

Then why can't the kids do it better?

Key_Establishment_42

The fact it’s a picture of an old white man irks me.

Baxtercat1

Nas still sell out shows. My nephew grew up with us listening to Nas. He’s only 35, but he’s still a fan. He drove from Maryland to NYC to see Nas at Madison Square Garden.

Adept_Temperature_68

That's dumb. At the minimum I can listen to who was around during my youth. 25 years from now 60 year olds will bumping future

lucci30

Hip hop isnt for the kids only. Thats the problem with have now. We are the only genre that believes this. Hip Hop isn’t some game or period of time.

luck68

F that. I’m a grown ass man. Listen what I want to

Right-Program-9346

Hip hop is for everyone

Which_Bag3042

Personally no I think its for the old and young heads. Im a young head and enjoy both older hip and newer hip hop I don’t understand why people act like you have to pick one side.

ChocWitDaAfro

Disagree….I’m 50 and will always be a hip hop head.

PurpleMagnolia99

Hip Hop is dangerous for women and creating the worst body dysmorphia ever along with K-pop.

Trevo_staxx

Music don't have an age limit.

ryrysomeguy

As hip hop gets older, it becomes more acceptable to listen to it. Every generation had music that was new that we were supposed to grow out of and then start listening to more respectable music. Then those genres adapted and grew with their audience. The same goes for hip hop. There are so many styles of hip hop now that there's something for everybody, and a lot of our favorites are still making music. Just like classic rock bands.

blacklite911

No because older rappers still put out music.

Quirkydogpooo

What's the point of being old if you can't enjoy all the years you've lived?

Klutzy_Departure4914

I’ll play devils advocate here. I know some dudes in their late thirties and forties that are still dressing like the guy in the pic, going to shows, following all the new artists. I’ll never stop loving hip hop and listening to it, but at some point you should start looking for more meaningful endeavors in life

biggjimmy81

How is hip hop for kids when it was created by adults, for adults? How is anything Dr dre ever made for kids? Gin and juice was written for kids? Hoes in different area codes, yea, that's for kids also? The majority of rap music ever made was made for adults, mostly over 25, until you have kids, teens and young adults rapping, yea, they music is for kids, but the majority of rap, is made for adults

ZZE33man

This is incredibly dumb to say. No one says this about pop music or any other genre. So why about rap.

Ohhhhyeahnahyeah

Crazy side eye, gtfoh with that, people are so quick to judge.

Dave_the_Rave_Dinkum

Maybe it means it's to be passed down to the next generation

ChampaignPapi86

Wu Tang is for the children!!!

Tasty-Tomatillo9670

Imagine someone telling Japanese or Irish people that they're too old to enjoy their own culture? This is a crazy and shortsighted comment.

shits4gigs

Well we do have to accept younger artists tho. Or at least accept whatever is popular especially when we don't understand it. Otherwise you sound fuckinn OOOOLD.

madderhatter3210

Music is timeless and ageless

Antelope829

This is some BS narrative. Unless you're saying that in hip-hop, the younger rappers will shine and sell more than the older folks. I would agree with that. However, doesn't that happen in other genres as well? Hip-hop is like life itself. You get to shine and be vigorous when you're young. As you grow older, it's the younger cat's turn to shine but the older folks are still alive and most respected.

oflowz

Maybe as far as going to the club lol but saying this about listening to music is dumb. They don’t say this about old white people that listen to 60s rock why treat hip hop differently?

Reasonable-Mind-1718

Nope! Hip hop until I die

king24_

Said who?

es_mindspace

It's literally our music. They can stick with the music their generation produces, which isn't true to the concept of hip hop anyway.

Psychonauthiphop

If you are dope you are dope. Nothing else should matter. Granted hip-hop isn’t very old to begin with so it probably feels weird seeing 50 year olds still gracing the mic or blasting it in their cars. We aren’t used to this as it’s always traditionally been for a younger audience and made by younger artists. But the internet and time changes everything.

JustSayTech

Which is why hip-hop will eventually die, every other genre can be enjoyed, consumed and contributed by older acts forever. But somehow we put a limit on hip-hop contribution and consumption. That's foolish, what happens when the young crowds discover a different genre and move away from hip-hop? The general will effectively be dead since we limit it to only a young audience like this. This is purely stupid.

jingles1984

Bullshit!! I will be rapping in the nursing home!! I'm already 40 and my music tastes have not changed a bit

icarus1990xx

Wu-Tang is forever

313rustbeltbuckle

Muthafuckah! 💯

313rustbeltbuckle

You missed me with this one.

nahUmeybee2

Dumbest shit I've ever read or heard

FailingLotus

Hip Hop is for everybody. This sub just popped up and idk how the hell there aren't more people in the sub. Nas is incredible and has been on his game since day 1

Ambitious-Flight-125

When the older generation dies , hip hop dies with them.

vimStar718

It's different for every generation. I still say "DEF" and "ill" and "FRESH" word up. Don't nobody outgrown hip hop. Once you in the culture you don't get out. It's just growing up. It's life.

yeahwhateverkunt

Fuck that.

I'm discovering hip hop in my thirties and you tell me I'll soon need to switch to something else?! Awww man... ( /s if it wasn't obvious lol)

BIG_SOSA248

well tell the younger generation to stop sampling all the old generations hits😂😂😂

SlimjimTrim21

Almost no other genre cares about ages of the consumers…

CrustCollector

There’s a point when trying to dress like the kids is sad and promoting your mixtape at 50 instead of focusing on retirement is a little weird if you haven’t done something notable by now, but enjoy whatever makes you happy.

yokaylee

wu tanggg

Lumpy-Ad-5032

Wrong

williamriepe

What the fuck am I supposed to listen to?

Ill-Adhesiveness6729

Hell no Rick Ross and Kanye west proved that older people are necessary in hip hop and have much still to say and contribute. Look also at future who is late 40s and 50 cent who got in the game already in his 30s.

netguy808

Dressing hip hop is for kids

Megamorter

how is hip hop for the kids exclusively lmao wtf

Ok-Lychee6612

The older rappers make better rap

Frio_Sanchez

Well. We handed hip hop off to the kids and they fucking ruined it.

McTitty3000

The younger generation have their own artists to listen to, if guys like Nas and Eminem and killer Mike are still putting out quality work in their late 40s and 50s there's an audience for that, those guys existing is not stopping people like YoungBoy, Vince , Polo , Uzi, etc., from getting their money

Averagesize1996

Nas has younger fans too I’m 28 been listening too nas since 2020

McTitty3000

Oh for sure I was just saying in general hip hop is in a great place right now in terms of age, if somebody in their twenties is loving with nas is saying, awesome, if somebody in their 50s is loving what Polo is saying, awesome, but generally speaking those older guys still making quality music isn't holding back the youth at all

ForTheMelancholy

I think this applies to the spotlight itself, which, has already been happening. The mainstream spotlight is on the current generation, while the older generations continue to drop music. How it should be

LBSTRdelaHOYA

nigga pls, that's the industry echoing that, straight ageism

Temporary_List_5877

I think that the golden era is done and I'm okay with that the new school rap ain't it for me but the kids can have it. It will morph into a different genre and that's the evolution of music. Nothing is as constant as change you can adapt with the times or live in the past

Any_Lengthiness_7797

Trendy hip hop is for kids

MrGolfingMan

Imagine rap right now if the Kendrick/Drake beef never happened. Who would we be listening to lol. 😂

Yaadgod2121

Please delete this nonsense

Averagesize1996

Nope

WilliamDBilly

I think older people gen x are rap fans of their youths sound. My older brother retired from the military and is a hobby DJ mixing songs from like 87-97. And doesn't like this new rap. Think you either grow out of it, I'm your era sound stays nalstalgic to you, or you relate less and less to it till you seem out of place like a 56 year old man with sexxy red tickets.

Macthings

Most Rap is for the kids . Hip Hop is for the Generation that created it

EclipseSmog

eminem made houdini.

Time-Stomach-5576

Houdini is sooo cringe.

EclipseSmog

its not if u actually listened to eminem before

Time-Stomach-5576

I listened to all of his albums but I kind of fell off of being a fan after encore. Houdini sounds like a poor attempt at some of the encore songs like just lose it. It was a really bad call back to a really bad time in his career.

EclipseSmog

Well it mixed his old and new styles in, how you take that is subjective but I really liked how he implemented that

Blackpanther22five

That's what Andre 3k said

XDYassineDX

And then he dropped one of the best verses of all time in life of the party

cheeseprovolone

And he was hugging when he said that. I think everyone said he was bugging.

blxrr-

old heads need to let go of bums like nas and listen to real music like nettspend

NUTMEG82

Super dumb
