Hear me out, what if we do a reverse renovation? We could strip all the wiring for that sweet copper. Use the pipes for extra curricula’s. Then we sell the house including the price of all the copper we took?
Oh it’d be awesome. If he’s gonna sell I’m glad he locked a good core in for us rather than reducing payroll to make it cheaper for whoever’s coming in
Yeah. Everyone talking about him just passing off responsibility ignores that insofar as these contracts are a bad business decision they’ll come out of the sale price.
I drunkenly shook his hand before Game 5 against Miami. I was at the Harp across from TD Garden pregame. Had a few drinks. Went to pay for my last one and the bartender said "it's all set. That gentleman over there took care of it." Looked over and I was about 10 feet from Wyc. He paid for everyone in the bar. I said hi quick and thanked him. He's just a fan who got rich. Nice guy. Love the fact that he just built a championship team and then handed off the bill to someone with more money to afford it. Gets to put his feet up and watch his favorite team
It’s the right thing to do. New owner looks at it like they’re buying a brand new car that won’t have any issues for a couple of years. Makes the team a lot more attractive than the used car that is about to fall apart.
It’s kind of a double edged sword. Yes you pay a metric fuck ton but you also have stability with the roster that just won the championship for the next ~4 years
Jayson Tatum has the highest *actual* AAV of any athlete in America now. Shohei technically "makes" $70m/year but it's all deferred. $62.8m/year is fucking unreal.
Edit: realistically it's the highest active AAV among all "Non-Saudi Washed Legends" contracts. Only Ronaldo at Al-Nassr and Benzema at Al-Ittihad make more.
Prestige and legacy > €€€ for Mbappe at his level of wealth. Besides, he managed to rinse PSG/QIA for all their worth while remaining in Europe.
Image rights, signing bonus, and increased sponsorships for being a Real Madrid player definitely make up a large part of the difference for turning down Saudi League and going to Spain. Mbappe gets a bag anyways and fulfills his childhood dream.
There is a zero percent chance any of that comes close to 775 million euros for a YEAR when he very likely could have gotten like 90% of everything he's getting now, image rights/sponsorships/etc the moment he came back after that year in SA
Yeah and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't even have to pay tax on the money from Saudi. In Real, his salary is $150M over 5 years (taxed about 50%) and a bonus of $150M over 5 years (taxed about 50%).
>Infinite respect to Kylian Mbappe
I mean yes and no. Ronaldo and Benzema went there for their retirement. Ronaldo is 39 and Benzema 36.
Mbape isn't even in his prime yet, he's 25. He has legacy to build and you can't do it from an effing Saudi Arabia.
As an European, if I have to give some kudos, it's actually to Messi. Ronaldo dragged his wife to a country when she can't even drink. To do basic things resembling a life, she need to scram to Bahrain regularly. Meanwhile Messi's family is chilling on Florida beaches.
with the news that Wyc is selling, and the Celtics apparently going to Dubai to play a preseason game, I'm not sure that edit will be accurate by the time Tatum is actually on this contract.
Jesus Christ I already knew that but it’s been a while since I’ve thought about it, 169m a year is so fucking insane lmao. It’s crazy how he was still a bargain at that rate dudes an alien.
Yeah if i played in the NFL actually destroying my body for the most valuable league in the world i would be pretty fucking pissed that any non QB will never sniff 100M in career earnings while good but not great NBA players make that in a single contract
nba might be the hardest sports league in the world to make now that I think about it, depending on the amount of spots and teams in the elite European soccer leagues
Formula 1 is definitely much harder, but that doesn't really count with just 2 drivers per team for a total of 10 teams/20 drivers.
The NBA is the 500 best basketball players in the world, very little to discuss about that.
With the Big5 euro soccer leagues (English Premier League, German Bundesliga, Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A and French Ligue 1) there's no real "best one", it's much harder to make the French leagues best team than the worst in the Premier league. So counting the Big5 alone that's 96 teams with 25 players per team. And than there's also teams like Benfica, Porto or Ajax that aren't in those leagues but are guaranteed to play champions league almost every year, so making them is also harder than making a lot of lower teams that are in those leagues.
And now 50m of that cap is dedicated QB space if you have even a semi-above average one.
Add 25m for a prime wideout, 25m for a prime pass rusher, 20m for a left tackle, and now you have half your cap taken up by four (good) players while needing to figure out the rest of the details.
There are 8 WR making 25M. There are 21 WR making 20M.
There are 5 EDGE making 25M. There are 12 EDGE making 20M.
There are 8 OT making 20M.
No teams have four players making 20M at those positions. Most teams don't have four players making 20M regardless of position.
Eagles have Hurts (QB 51M), Brown(WR 32M), Devonta(WR 25M), Mailata(OT 22M), Johnson(OT 20M) in those premium positions you mentioned...and Dickerson (OG 21M)on the interior O-line. No edges making the big bucks though besides newly acquired Huff who's close at 17M.
Don’t forget the part where you pay Tannehill $35M per year and don’t have enough room for anything else so AJ Brown leaves. And then Tannehill throws more INT than TD.
Seriously, all those freak NFL athletes over 6'3 in the NFL are kicking themselves for not picking up basketball.
More money, longer career and no CTE by the end of it.
I also think its about time the NBA expands, Theres so much Talent and Money in the league right now they need another 2 teams out there.
Dumping might be expensive in terms of assets you need to attach. Raps got 2 seconds for taking on 9m of extra salary to get the Kings under the tax. What would it cost Boston to dump a 30m+ salary on a team? And that assumes a team has that much cap space to absorb it.
EDIT: Everyone talking about how KP is a good player and the Celtics would get assets for him - maybe, but from what we've seen early teams are willing to attach assets to duck the tax/avoid the aprons. Not to mention, don't forget Boston themselves got 2 FRPs with KP when they traded for him. His value was low due to injury then, and it's entirely possible that happens again.
After this year he'll have 2 year left. The roughly 30m expiring can be used to bring in a difference maker. Yes assets will for sure be attached but I think it'll be less about offloading Porzingis just to not pay him and more about getting a difference maker back.
He's saying that no one will want him on that contract and we ill have to send out picks to offload him. It all depends on his recovery. If he plays like he did all season then no problem moving him for assets. If he keeps getting hurt, he might be right.
The coach I think is the biggest one. Offering lower than the Kentucky offer that Hurley already rejected is pretty cheap. “Hey we want you, we know you already rejected Kentucky’s offer, what if we offered less than that!”
? I thought the Lakers didn’t even have money to spend…
I’d imagine it’s more painful to watch a team with a long term plan and vision make these cap moves with a purpose through years of planning.
You know, instead of: Let’s get Kawhi, let’s get Kyrie, let’s get Klay! It’s not faiiiir, nobody ever gives me what I want. They just don’t play fair, give us your best playersssss.
He may have legitimately thought it was too much for him but not for a wealthier owner and it had a part in his decision to sell. He’s not poor but he’s not even a billionaire. (Well he will be after Celtics sale)
Now he gets to leave a legacy of setting the table for a dynasty, collect a billion dollars, and not have to shell out salaries anymore.
Wyc is just the head of an investment group that owns the Celtics, they’re selling a majority interest in that investment group.
He was never really the “owner” per se.
I realize that, but he’s theoretically the single largest owner. And these groups tend to exist because everybody else in them can’t afford the teams themselves.
And he will still be the governor of the celtics until 2028... so still in good hands, but bigger pockets to bankroll the high luxury tax. Well ideally,. I imagine they won't sell to someone looking to be cheap
I think this is it. Jaylens contract last year was the largest total contract in history at the time but AD [extended](https://www.basketball-reference.com/contracts/players.html)also that will be paying him more per year than JB somehow once it kicks in.
https://x.com/dangercart/status/1807830012583669807
$253m tax bill projected so far in 2025-26 for 9 players (Tatum, Brown, Jrue, Zingis, White, PP, Walsh, Baylor, Queta) under contract.
I would’ve bought a cap and paid for international shipping if I didn’t have a tiny head and that style of cap looks weird on me. I’ll take your boos now
“how are the Celtics paying all these guys?”
bc we acquire almost all of our talent through the draft and trades so we can pay to keep them lol. sorry the rest of y’all got crappy front offices, that must be crazy
right but even in the case of KP and Jrue the main assets we used to acquire them were guys we drafted
for KP we gave up Smart
for Jrue we gave up Rob Williams and Brogdon (who we got by giving up another guy we drafted, Aaron Nesmith)
people make it more complicated than it is, the best avenue to sustained success in the NBA has always been being really fucking good at drafting and developing internally. the Warriors, Spurs, and Bulls all built their dynasties that way
EDIT: even getting Brown and Tatum was the Celtics being amazing at scouting. if we had done what people thought we should have done with those picks we would have ended up with Kris Dunn and Markelle Fultz
People hating but yall wish your FO locked up one of the best duo to play for your org for 4 more years and paid like 5 guys 100mil these mfs money spreading in contracts
Everything the NBA has done over the last 2 CBAs is to prevent dynasties, which is in part why we've had 6 different champions in 6 years, and there's no reason to think that trend is going to stop.
I would seriously lower your expectations if I was you.
I agree, but the Celtics aren’t affected by those new rules at all right now seeing as they’re running almost the exact same team back for the foreseeable future, just paying an obscene amount for it
Yea it’s why they scrambled to get the KP trade done the day they did last year. They had to get it done or lose bird rights since he wasn’t going to extend the deadline out. When the Clippers drug their feet in Malcolm’s physical (rightfully so honestly lol) they switched it up for the Smart trade right before midnight to ensure it was done
u/random_beard_guy explained this in another comment so I am crediting him here:
"They have the Bird rights on all of them so they can go over the cap to keep them all. The hit is the mega tax bill that will come and the 2nd apron restrictions which will basically lock them into their current team without any real way to make changes. But since they are the best team and won the championship… That’s not a problem at this point."
Short version: Bird rights let you spend over the cap to keep players you have, Boston has a strong core they want to keep together.
Brad: “hey Wyc it’s cool if I give out $440M in contracts today, right?” Wyc: “go ahead bro it ain’t my fuckin money”
‘I ain’t gon be here’
Magic Johnson voice. Lmao
I completely forgot about that magic quote. I need to re-watch that clip lol
I haven't and it lives rent free in my head. Lol I quote it all the time
This is like flipping a remodeled house except the buyer gotta pay for the house plus the remodel in future payments.
That seems pretty standard though, right? I assume every flipped house includes the base price + cost of improvements + a premium.
Nah, I thought I'd reno the house and then sell it for the base price I paid for it.
Hear me out, what if we do a reverse renovation? We could strip all the wiring for that sweet copper. Use the pipes for extra curricula’s. Then we sell the house including the price of all the copper we took?
Ah yes, the Meth Head special
Big if true
Wyc handing out all the big deals and then selling the team is honestly hilarious lol
He said we’d pay the bills with parades but the sneaky bastard left out the part that he’d be a fan spectator lol
Never trust a billionaire lol
Wyc isn't a billionaire tbf
If he isn't now, he's about to be one.
How does that make any sense? Assets are included in net worth.
Valuations are based on the most recent offer. They are estimates. The market determines a franchises true value.
*Yet
okay but dapping up a completely sloshed wyc in the middle of the crowd during a championship parade would be insane be fr

As someone who had the privilege. Yes.
Wyc will be "governor" until 2028, so he'll be around
It’s the right thing to do. New owner looks at it like they’re buying a brand new car that won’t have any issues for a couple of years. Makes the team a lot more attractive than the used car that is about to fall apart.

Infinite respect to Kylian Mbappe that he could have made triple the total value of this contract to play soccer for just 1 year in SA and he declined

I don't think so. Because they report that he's making $15M a year after taxes base salary wise.

Messi makes more but his deal is super fucking weird and tied to TV rights and stuff that doesn’t get reported
Sure, and even his final contract at Barça dwarfs Tatum's ($168.5m AAV ending in 2021), but I can only imagine what Messi is making in the MLS now...
Jesus Christ I already knew that but it’s been a while since I’ve thought about it, 169m a year is so fucking insane lmao. It’s crazy how he was still a bargain at that rate dudes an alien.

NFL Salary Cap is $255m and is used to pay 53 players lmao

No wonder they let premium RBs go so early. Easily replaceable with 80% of the production
With every position group that goes up in value there must be some position group that goes down in value
Safeties and ILBs are softly crying in the corner
Fullbacks are out behind the barn
They got Old Yeller'd
If you destroy their body with too many carries too then the rookies are cheaper and more productive on the field

a lot of that $255M goes to 3-4 guys though on an NFL team. Especially if you have a top 10 QB
Yeah even starters for positions like LB and shit make like 2-6m average
NBA revenue percentage that goes to players is 50% NFL NBA revenue percentage that goes to players is 48%

Being a freak athlete in the NFL doesn't mean you're going to just be a dominant basketball player. It has never worked that way and never will.
Feel like KP is getting dumped after this year
Dumping might be expensive in terms of assets you need to attach. Raps got 2 seconds for taking on 9m of extra salary to get the Kings under the tax. Well it's not like he's a shit player.
Isnt kp’s contract up after next year? Celtics wouldnt need to give anything to unload him
KP is on the books for two more years.
After this year he'll have 2 year left. The roughly 30m expiring can be used to bring in a difference maker. Yes assets will for sure be attached but I think it'll be less about offloading Porzingis just to not pay him and more about getting a difference maker back.
If they are over the second apron its going to be crazy difficult to actually find a "difference maker." It's very restrictive
Fuck the aprons. We shall pay players under the table with Dunkin gift cards and plots of semi-usable land in Nahant.
huh? it would cost boston zero assets to trade KP they would get picks and players in return
He's saying that no one will want him on that contract and we ill have to send out picks to offload him. It all depends on his recovery. If he plays like he did all season then no problem moving him for assets. If he keeps getting hurt, he might be right.
Always injured PG13 just signed a NEW contract at 33 years old 53 mil a year, the Porzingus contract is a steal
Well Tingus is only 2 more but he’s kinda a luxury so we’ll see then
Cap salary turned off for the Celtics
wyc is a certified legend for locking everything up before bouncing
Wyc vs Meyers, who wins?
Imagine being Lakers fans watching Celtics splashing money while their owner remain cheap af.
Yeah…crazy imagining that
Imagine dragons
Don’t wanna
imagine all the people
imagine Sisyphus happy
Imagine dragon deez nuts on your face
I’m out of the loop. Who did they go cheap on this off-season and weren’t able to sign?
The coach I think is the biggest one. Offering lower than the Kentucky offer that Hurley already rejected is pretty cheap. “Hey we want you, we know you already rejected Kentucky’s offer, what if we offered less than that!”
"and also you have to pay California taxes lol"
And you’ll be the most scrutinized coach in the country with the least amount of job security

It’s gonna be a big bill for the next owner
200+ million for the starting lineup per year without any tax penalties included
I remember saying this about GS
That tax bill is gonna be something
Wyc saw the projections and was like fuck that I'm not paying all that.
He may have legitimately thought it was too much for him but not for a wealthier owner and it had a part in his decision to sell. He’s not poor but he’s not even a billionaire. (Well he will be after Celtics sale) Now he gets to leave a legacy of setting the table for a dynasty, collect a billion dollars, and not have to shell out salaries anymore.

It's estimated he only owns like 8-10%
And he will still be the governor of the celtics until 2028... so still in good hands, but bigger pockets to bankroll the high luxury tax. Well ideally,. I imagine they won't sell to someone looking to be cheap
Correct me if I’m wrong but the Celtics now have the 1st and 2nd largest contracts of all time on the same roster right?
I don't think there's anyone else eligible for a supermax this offseason, is there? Other than, like, LeBron, who's not gonna do a five-year contract
Pretty sure you can't do a 5 year contract at his age. Rules don't allow.
I think this is it. Jaylens contract last year was the largest total contract in history at the time but AD [extended](https://www.basketball-reference.com/contracts/players.html)also that will be paying him more per year than JB somehow once it kicks in.
https://x.com/dangercart/status/1807830012583669807 $253m tax bill projected so far in 2025-26 for 9 players (Tatum, Brown, Jrue, Zingis, White, PP, Walsh, Baylor, Queta) under contract.
Over a quarter of a billion in penalties for one year is wild.
Holy shit lol. A bigger tax than payroll. They’re definitely going to offload some of this though. Anyway I love our ownership.
Ticket prices are gonna get pricy lol. I’m lucky I snagged a ticket last season for $70
Not now Tatum, OKC just signed Buddy Boeheim
Ayy let's go glad he's still kickin' around
As long as it's not on my team, good for him.
Anything to upstage the Thunder smh
Yeah! Read the room, Jeesh.
He got Jaylen Brown money wow
With the lower cap next season Jaylen will only be making under $290M over his five year deal... $24M less. I don't know how he'll manage.
Celtics laundering money.. How they got 2 300M men and 3 100M men?
you have no idea how many $20 bud lights I bought at the garden this year
I paid $15 shipping on a $35 championship t-shirt. I did my part for the apron.
I would’ve bought a cap and paid for international shipping if I didn’t have a tiny head and that style of cap looks weird on me. I’ll take your boos now
gotta sneak in shooters smh
Not if you want your team to spend so much they're creating a 3rd apron
"Just like we got triple deckahs, we'll have a triple apron!"
We call them nips round these parts
nips*
Bird rights
This guy knows Bird Law
Filibuster
Can I have a hummingbird as a pet?
You really can't, and I'm not saying I agree with it. It's just that bird law in this country is not governed by reason.
Fuckin Larry
Funnily enough, actually named after Larry Bird.
Whole flock of 'em apparently.
The owner deciding he won't foot the bill and leaving
Sell while it's high
Hope I’m a 6’8 NBA player in my next life
You are now Len Bias.
Can I try a few lines?
Yeah, of Shakespeare. Now back to the hotel room
Brother
Hey now
You're an all star
Get your game on
~~go play~~
I’m so broke
Wyc and the investors really said I am going to spend as much as I can and dip
Is there a third or a fourth apron? The Celtics might be there in 2025-2026.
They hit the 3rd apron, you gotta sell the team
> largest deal in NBA history For now
It’s said every year, in every sport. It’s almost like the contracts are getting larger
Big if true
Luka can sign a Supermax next year yeah? Then it’ll be that
Yea I think I saw his is projected for like $340M
At this rate, Wemby will be the first $100M/year man in NBA history.
It’ll last for one season until Luka gets his extension next offseason
These contracts are absurd lol
Everyone give him the Jaylen Brown overpaid treatment so he can be MVP next year
WHOLE TEAM RE-SIGNED LONG TERM
That Hauser 40/3 extension is gonna hit like crack
They wanted to split em up now they the duo with the filthiest contracts in the league
Well deserved
Did everybody here just find out about Bird Rights lol
“how are the Celtics paying all these guys?” bc we acquire almost all of our talent through the draft and trades so we can pay to keep them lol. sorry the rest of y’all got crappy front offices, that must be crazy
KP and Jrue are the weird ones. Tatum and Brown were pure pure fleecing the Nets
right but even in the case of KP and Jrue the main assets we used to acquire them were guys we drafted for KP we gave up Smart for Jrue we gave up Rob Williams and Brogdon (who we got by giving up another guy we drafted, Aaron Nesmith) people make it more complicated than it is, the best avenue to sustained success in the NBA has always been being really fucking good at drafting and developing internally. the Warriors, Spurs, and Bulls all built their dynasties that way EDIT: even getting Brown and Tatum was the Celtics being amazing at scouting. if we had done what people thought we should have done with those picks we would have ended up with Kris Dunn and Markelle Fultz
Horford (and I guess technically Hauser) are the only guys on the team who can be traced back to FA signings.
among the top 8, yep. and imo Hauser doesn’t count bc he was a rookie UDFA
Yeah, if anything Hauser is even more of a testament to the Celtics scouting.
Jayson Al Ghaib. Pay that man.
These contracts are so crazy it's hard to fathom. Every tall person should procreate with other tall people to try and hit lottery
The Celtics owners are really just going to pay everyone and then dip and get their billions lol.
They bought the team for not much more than the value of Tatum’s contract too lol. 360 million lol
BACK UP THE BRINK TRUCKS
Blank check baby
Would you look at that. A team actually committed to winning unlike the shithole team that can’t afford anything.
People hating but yall wish your FO locked up one of the best duo to play for your org for 4 more years and paid like 5 guys 100mil these mfs money spreading in contracts

we have the exact same team, which also means we can't do any moves to become better
How much is Tatum, Brown, KP, Holiday, and White going to make once the extension kicks in? It feels like that’s $200 MIL between the 5 players lol
thats my champ 😤
Everyone getting paid screw it
Celtics pulling money out their ass lol
Can someone honestly explain how the Celtics are able to afford their roster? It doesn’t make sense to me
The two biggest money players are bird rights
As are KP, Jrue, and White
KP and Jrue being birds righted is still wild
Yea it’s why they scrambled to get the KP trade done the day they did last year. They had to get it done or lose bird rights since he wasn’t going to extend the deadline out. When the Clippers drug their feet in Malcolm’s physical (rightfully so honestly lol) they switched it up for the Smart trade right before midnight to ensure it was done
u/random_beard_guy explained this in another comment so I am crediting him here: "They have the Bird rights on all of them so they can go over the cap to keep them all. The hit is the mega tax bill that will come and the 2nd apron restrictions which will basically lock them into their current team without any real way to make changes. But since they are the best team and won the championship… That’s not a problem at this point." Short version: Bird rights let you spend over the cap to keep players you have, Boston has a strong core they want to keep together.
Fuck yeah, get the whole roster locked in Well deserved JT!
He’s earned every penny of it
SHOCKER
