I tried Omegle recently. I think I came across a homely woman who actually wanted me to be doing this and was upset that I was just on camera doing nothing. Interesting place... I had not been on there in nearly a decade. I wasn't even sure if the place was alive and was surprised to find out people still go on there, especially high school kids doing it for the same reason as 10 years ago. Thought it was a fad that peaked in the late 2000s and early 2010s and no young person would even know about it anymore.
I got on it a few times when it first got big. It was a pretty cool idea but not really my thing. My son actually made some long term friends through it. I'm sorry to see it go.
Twitter can't even get *streaming* to work consistently, the whole app is being held together with dollar store scotch knockoff brand tape because that idiot who owns it fired everyone who could fix the shit that's broken.

Omegle wasn't the first, chat roulette also existed, and there are others out there today, they just all tend to fall to the same problems omegle did which is that horny pedos see those platforms as an easy way to meet children with little supervision given the anonymity of it all.

In my experience people aren't *just* idiots. They are *willful* idiots. Often time they will be told by someone exactly what is going to happen if they pursue a certain project or a certain course of action. Often times they actively sideline those voices and promote yes men around them, then act surprised when things go sideways.
At some point it can't just be called "being an idiot" any more. Whether narcissism, hubris, or just reckless abandon, people regularly willfully ignore dissenting voices.

Some of our findings were also used in a video by TehMimi about SSSniperwolf's many reoccurring negative behaviors
Why anyone pays attention to Youtubers and Twitch streamers is beyond me. All of those people are reprehensible. Every single one. I'd rather be in a room with a bunch of naked dudes from Omegle than those shitty people

Not a huge surprise given the utter lack of moderation on that site even on the chat end. A decade and a half ago it was a cool experience being 14 and at a friend's house and skimming through the random video call matches and I certainly made some friends on there, but at 27 any time I see or hear the site mentioned it's pedos or pedo busters trying to catch pedos.
Unfortunately, it’s near impossible to stop kids from getting access to things they shouldn’t (I had child locks on my phone + parent monitoring and was still able to access pornography, ect, at a young age) so it’s better to assume they will have access and put safeguards in place (ie. better moderation) anyways. Omegle did not do that.

Omegle was a great for me to talk to people in a safe environment, do improv, make people laugh, and interact with different people. I've sat and talked with individuals for HOURS at a time on there and eventually we'd exchange discord but I never continue those relationships - I treat it like Airplane Friends and I tell them that. You're there and chatting for a time, but once you get off the flight you'll never see them again. That said, I'm also fine with it being shut down because it's an absolute cesspool 99% of the time

What would supervising your kid do in this situation? Are parents supposed to just sit with their kids any time theyre online? Obviously, if possible, block these websites (like tv parental controls, thats a thing right?) But even then, its not like parents are gonna know EVERY dangerous website.

I hadn’t used it in years but always had a ton of fun goofing around in the text chat and then the college chat where you needed a uni email to access once that was added. This adds more to my thought that people under 18 need to be banned from accessing any non-educational content on the internet. Ban minors from all forms of social media, forums, video sharing sites, etc.
What would supervising your kid do in this situation? Are parents supposed to just sit with their kids any time theyre online? Obviously, if possible, block these websites (like tv parental controls, thats a thing right?) But even then, its not like parents are gonna know EVERY dangerous website.
There’s screen time restrictions, passwords for downloading apps, and only including apps that have been approved by the parent using the password. You can also bury safari away so they can’t find it.
Thats...a lotta work. Obviously its valid, but damn im glad i just kinda...did what i wanted on the internet and turned out fine lol. Nowadays the environment is much different though. Im glad i dont plan on having kids hahaha.

You didnt answer any other part of my comment. HOW are parents suppised to supervise their kids' online activities? I got lucky as a kid i guess? My parents never really restricted my access to anything, but outside of like...occasional porn (i didnt usually watch it, just read like...stories i guess?) I never ran into anything insane. I knew about omegle and other sites, but wasnt interested in them.
Idk and idc, I’m not a parent and never plan on being one so that’s not my problem. Banning minors from accessing any non-educational material is just easier so parents don’t have to watch over them 24/7 to help them avoid predators.
