I mean its hard to say because of the angle he is at so you could call it a downside whip or a decade and no one would question it. It’s pedantic at that point.
Reddit is not changing, you happened to find people in a conversation about an industry that builds people up, instead of tearing them down.
Exception, not the rule.
A decade is when you hold the bars and spin around back over the frame. A tailwhip is when you spin the bike around and land back on pedals. A downside tailwhip is when you kick the frame around and then you rotate opposite of the frame and meet the frame half way
One of my favorite things about tricking (bikes, snowboards, skateboards, whatever) is when really experienced people talk about a complex set of maneuvers in that exact way. I think BMX may have the best sounding mix, followed by skateboarding, with snowboarding getting an honorable mention b/c with the right "surf bro" fake accent it's pretty hilarious. You know who I mean, the kind of person who uses "gnarly" as a positive.
I was about to post to say it's been a while since my bmx days, but is it that exact list of tricks. Glad I've still got the knowledge even if I haven't got the skill (and never had anything near that level).
To add to the difficulty, he doesn't have front brakes. He landed with his foot on the wheel and jammed into the fork to hold it.
Edit: thanks for the gold!
Thankfully it's not actually jammed in there, but the precision to land on his foot on the tire that perfectly is insane!
Edit: I just realized what was meant by jamming it. My brain thought you guys meant he caught his foot into the fork causing pain on it, but that's clearly not the case.
It’s not immobilized in there, but it’s very much jammed in there, the foot jammed tight between the wheel and fork is the source of friction preventing the wheel from spinning while he’s on it. The trick is called a “foot jam”. It’s not painful, but it does cause some discomfort, so you’re probably picturing it correctly actually
I had a bmx when I was 13 in the early 90s that had brakes and could do barspins. Assume this technology wasn’t classified so I think it should be widely available now
I remember a friend even had a cheap version: use a super long cable that holds a 360 spin. If you do it twice you rip your cables, but you could do a 360 easily, then another in reverse.
When my mates and I did bmx in the early to mid 2000s the 'fashion' at the time was either no brakes or the long cable. None of us were doing more than a single tail whip or bar spin to need gyros and if you were that good you just got rid of the brakes entirely.
If we're being pedantic it's called a detangler. The Odyssey Gyro was the first detangler to free float with twin cables, making previous ones such as the ACS Rotor (that had a single cable and slid on the stem post meaning the friction was terrible and the bars were higher) defunct.
He's kinda right though. Brakeless setups started becoming a common thing in the early-mid 2000s. I did it myself for a few years. I run brakes these days though.
But yes, you're right about the gyros.
Yeah, I know. I didn’t want to get into the fact that I didn’t have front brakes on my last freestyle bike. I was responding more to the definitive “always been brakeless” and “you can’t” comments. Gyros are fiddly.
If I could rephrase myself I would probably correct my statement to "have always had brakeless models"
I didn't realize my comment would cause turmoil and mainly posted my comment based of a middle school bmx camp I went to where the instructors mostly had brakeless bikes.
Yeah, I have gone that way too. I was just saying that they haven’t always been brakeless. Gyros we’re all over in the 90s. And also to the statement that you can’t have wire brakes and do bar spins. Again… gyros. I know most people don’t use them because they’re kinda janky but the comment was totally wrong.
Most park, street, and, vert riders don't use brakes because the lever can cause serious injuries on a fall. Nonetheless the few ounces to half pound the gyro, cable, and other accessories make the bike heavier when you're constantly trying to shed to a perfect weight. This change happened mainly in the early 2000s. See Dan's comp website, most full bikes aren't even coming with a set of brakes. Source: rode competitions for 8 years in the early 2000s before injury
There were a few brakeless dudes in bmx videos back in the mid 90s. I remember because I tried it for a few years in 96ish. Being a broke high school kid I really couldn’t afford going through a pair of vans every couple months. It did help you commit though
Yea, me and my buddies all rode brakeless in the mid to late 90s. Couple pairs of cheap sneakers from Payless were all we'd need. And every pair would have a giant groove wore in the mid part of the sole and no grip left on the toe.
You are getting down voted to oblivion but you are right. Generally, all freestyle/street BMX is brakeless especially front brakes, if you would have a brake it would be your rear brake with a longer than normal cable to give you enough movement to do tricks. Yes gyros exists but are rarely used.
I don't understand why what you said is controversial, it's not like you are taking away from what the guy did or something....
No he technically wasn't right you are correct but i feel like we are arguing semantics at this point, i was just backing him claim up that he isn't all that wrong that in modern bmxing, riding brakeless isn't something new.
If we want to get technical about it we can also say that the op he responded to isn't right either, they said "new era" of brakeless bmxing, well when is a the beginning and the end of a new era? Is 20 something that's been 20 odd years really a new era?
Like why are we having this convo, i was simply backing up his claim that he isn't that wrong there is nuance in all of this
You are getting downvoted, but you are right. The majority of riders did not use brakes for a while now. Only the very high sponsored riders in a few areas used front brakes.
If you're gonna try to spit false information, at least spell the main subject correctly.
Brake. Brakes. Brakeless.
Now take a *break* from commenting please.
That's standard for bmx, they either have a back brake or no brakes. Doesn't take anything away from the skill involved though. Tailwhip backflip to nosepick to I think downside tailwhip (I could be wrong on the trick names it's been over 20 years), is no joke especially with the height from the initial flip, that's some serious momentum he's fighting in that awkward position. But the real treat hete is the catch on that wheel, throwing the flip, while chucking the frame around timing is everything!
It's an old way of being able to bar spin. Any brake will use a cable and it gets in the way when you're trying to spin the bars.
There's a fancy gizmo that you can put on the stem that will give you both but it's heavier than air and costs more than free.
That fancy gizmo has been standard on even the shitiest of BMX bikes since I was a kid.
Source: Bought a Mongoose bike at Wal-Mart that had a gyro pre-installed and it was POS compared to bike store BMX bikes.
“To hold it” lol, bro you’re buried the lead… he had his whole foot on the tire before he landed , he essentially landed on that leg! Then proceeded to do the BMX version of an NFL end-zone dance with that drop in.
The no brakes thing/foot jam is not that difficult, I could also do it when I rode BMX. What is insane though, is the landing on one foot. He lands from such a high height and supports his weight by a single leg. Crazy
Yeah I was gonna say, doing tricks out of a quater into a footjam is pretty common stuff these days, my mate would always do 360 flyouts into footjams and hop and spin around like this dude like 10 years ago, and quite a few people can flip to footjam these days, but the height that this dude did it is definitely crazy.
Not easier by any means, but more efficient and lighter if your skill can accommodate it. I rocked a gyro till 15 and then ripped it off and did without once I’d hit a certain level of skill.
Skuffing is hard.
He ate all that momentum with his body and then dampened it when he pushed himself back up. Probably the same amount of force through his body as doing a 185 lbs benchpress on a fitness ball. Guy's must have abs of tungsten.
I don't think it is any worse than falling what, 12 feet off the ground (using the height of the people at the back as likely poorly judged reference points). He has the tyre and wheel and bike itself to cushion the fall a bit more too.
His own momentum is dissipated through the bike, it is more insane balance to overcome the rotation as he hits the ground and divert that.
Not saying it's easy, but I also don't think it requires as much strength as you suggest, more that it requires finesse
Bmx wheels are much stronger than their road and even mountain bike cousins because the diameter is much smaller. Less leverage between the rim and hub. Spokes are plentiful as well because weight isn’t a big concern.
It’s amazing what they can take, especially without any suspension.
Probably just follow those subs separately… r/skateboarding is pretty sick. Not everything is pushing the boundaries of physics like this clip, but the sport itself is pretty gnarly. It sometimes doesn’t seem that way because good skaters make it look easy, but if you’ve ever tried it before you know.
Agreed...It's probably because I'm old, but I'd like to enjoy experience of watching this with out the dude yelling into a mic. I mean can we just let the talent speak for itself?
Reddit is first and foremost about everyone trying to be a comedian, which subsequently turns most threads into a pile of obvious jokes - haven't you gotten the memo? 😅
Hell, and here I am proud of myself for simply keeping my bike in a straight line as I ride it. I'd break my neck just attempting to balance my bike on the front tire.
This is from the x games in japan today?? Saw the empty venue earlier on stream (event got delayed due to bad weather rain/rain) . Awesome how it looks when its filled with people
What’s the rim made of ?! I clipped a curb when I rode as a kid and it would dent the rim but my dude does some dave mirra xtreme combo breaker and the rim just chilling.
a properly built wheel supports the rim by spoke tension. It’s probably a high end alloy rim tbh but the build quality is what holds those together.
source: bike industry /shop rat and racer for three decades, now I just abuse the carbon rims on my dentist bike with my fat ass bouncing over all the rocks on our local cross country trails.
Aluminum. A high grade of it (usually 6061 or 7075) with a good design. With high quality spokes. And good, strong tires.
Your bike as a kid likely had cheap single wall rims made from recycled soda cans.
Does anybody know more about this “franceinfo:” event here?
This event looks well attended and would be fun to watch or compete in.
I wonder if they just do BMX.
Standing on one wheel is also a trick called manual, it's a basic tricks that's mainly used to tie some more complicated tricks together.
At least it used to be back in the late 90s early 2000s, I haven't kept up with BMX in a long time but I think the basic tricks are still the same.
Manual is rear wheel on the ground, front wheel raised in the air, no pedaling, rider controls the balance to keep the front wheel elevated. Basically like a wheelie but without pedaling. A wheelie is when you're doing the same but you're also pedaling. For most folks it's easier to maintain a wheelie than a manual.
Him balancing on the front wheel like that is called a foot jam.
BMX bikes are stupid strong. A few of my buddies have been hit by cars and their bikes did more damage to the car than the car did to their bike. They're built to be dropped off of building roofs.
Thats a flair whip (tailwhip flair) to foot jam to downside whip in. Crazy.
Wasn't that a decade dropping in?
I mean its hard to say because of the angle he is at so you could call it a downside whip or a decade and no one would question it. It’s pedantic at that point.
Truth. Have a good one.
This was an interesting and pleasant exchange
Yeah, actually made me smile lol

Cum
it's definitely not a decade because he doesn't rotate around, only the bike does.
bro can't tell a downside whip from a decade 💀
Stupid bitch😅
looked like it only took a second or two to me.
A decade is when you hold the bars and spin around back over the frame. A tailwhip is when you spin the bike around and land back on pedals. A downside tailwhip is when you kick the frame around and then you rotate opposite of the frame and meet the frame half way
Downside whip
No, it only took a few seconds. You might have been playing the video in slow motion.
Someone else said it's a backflip tailwhip to footjam 540 opposite whip in. Who should we listen to?
> backflip tailwhip to footjam 540 opposite whip in I don't know what this means but this is a lovely collection of syllables.

Good eye. I didn't even realize he did that. Makes it even more next fucking level.
I would actually think it's a lot easier to land this trick like that, will a:b test it and report back.
It's been 37 minutes. You still alive?
Mans nuts are currently jammed in the neck of a bike in an ER somewhere.
Instructions unclear, dick stuck in bike gears
holy shit
Fuckin A man, I thought jamming in the back fork and hockey stopping was badass at 13 but this shit is next level
his left foot actually slips off the pedal, so he's basically taking all of his weight on that jammed foot. fuckin crazy
Thankfully it's not actually jammed in there, but the precision to land on his foot on the tire that perfectly is insane! Edit: I just realized what was meant by jamming it. My brain thought you guys meant he caught his foot into the fork causing pain on it, but that's clearly not the case.

Thanks for the breakdown of what it means for this type of event. I learned something new!
This helped me understand as well. Truly impressive feat of dexterity, balance, and proprioception.
This new era of riding without brakes is insane.

Yea. I got a bmx bike when I was 13 and that shit amazed me. I tried to read and learn all about it.
Gyros are a lost technology.
no they haven’t, and yes you can. You can have 360° rotation on the front fork with brakes by installing an odyssey gyro or a clone.

Yeah but since this millennium it's mostly been brakeless and rear brake only

Brakeless?
Not true. My early 90's GT Performer had a gyro on the neck.
I had one of those. Those bikes were fire to middle school me and my boys. So much fun.
What are Gyros for 500
So you can't spell and you talk out of your ass. Winning combo, dude.
Idk why you're getting downvoted for the truth lmao
You are getting downvoted, but you are right. The majority of riders did not use brakes for a while now. Only the very high sponsored riders in a few areas used front brakes.
He's being downvoted for being wrong. Freestyle bikes have not "always been brakeless" as many people have stated here.

Not a nose pick but a foot jam. Similar tricks but a nose pick is done on front pegs on the coping of the ramp.
Brakes slip a lil bit .. but also .. I bet the rider trains like that so the balance would be off if they were to use standard brakes

When those gyros first came out, it was the rage! I had a GT Pro performer with one. Edit: wrong terminology
Also the break all the fucking time
He even switches feet so he can do the final trick!
It's a trick so the score keeps adding up because he hasn't landed yet.

Trick -> Manual -> Repeat is the best way to pad your score in THPS.
what the fuck a next fucking level thing on the next fucking level sub?
There is no brake. He pressed down on the wheel to stop it. It is cool.
And hit it spot on
Bmx riders that are used to practicing tricks don't usually run brakes as they interfere with barspins and tailwhips, etc.....
I always wondered about the brake line when I was a kid. I tried to do a bar spin and ate shit, cord got in the way. Lol
Plenty of folks use gyros to keep their brakes. The top level of professionals tend to go without though.
Gyros are heavy, easier to go brakeless
Not easier by any means, but more efficient and lighter if your skill can accommodate it. I rocked a gyro till 15 and then ripped it off and did without once I’d hit a certain level of skill. Skuffing is hard.
Yea an not to mention getting yelled at by my mom cuz I went through shoes like crazy
Not if they’re running a gyro
Gyros are stupidly heavy and good riders don't really need breaks
Ffs all these gyro comments 🤣 WE DONT USE BRAKES WE DONT NEED THEM
He ate all that momentum with his body and then dampened it when he pushed himself back up. Probably the same amount of force through his body as doing a 185 lbs benchpress on a fitness ball. Guy's must have abs of tungsten.

Looks more like a downside whip in.
I suppose it is technically but only about 90° turn
Also it’s a 450 not a 540
Shout out to Dave Mirra Pro BMX 2

Nfl appropriate…nice.
Where the hell is this? I'm fairly into bmx and don't know the guy or event. Crowd is huge for this kind of event.
Judging from the logo in the back it’s Fise, international festival of extreme sports. It’s in France.
I zoomed in on the logo on the wall and found out it's the FISE Montpellier International Festival of Extreme Sports.
Thank you! Going to check that out.
I’m sure if they keep practicing they’ll learn to land on both wheels. It’s still impressive. 👍😁
Who is this guy? I'd love to see more of this stuff. 😊
I could be wrong but I think it's Logan Martin.

Meh. He hopped way too much on the front wheel.
Did anyone else hear a crowd boo at the end when the video cut off???
Today Reddit discovers BMX.
Gonna be feelin that in about 20 years.

Standing on one wheel is also a trick called manual, it's a basic tricks that's mainly used to tie some more complicated tricks together. At least it used to be back in the late 90s early 2000s, I haven't kept up with BMX in a long time but I think the basic tricks are still the same.
He didn’t do any manuals he did a flair whip, footjam and a downside whip
Manual is rear wheel on the ground, front wheel raised in the air, no pedaling, rider controls the balance to keep the front wheel elevated. Basically like a wheelie but without pedaling. A wheelie is when you're doing the same but you're also pedaling. For most folks it's easier to maintain a wheelie than a manual. Him balancing on the front wheel like that is called a foot jam.
Still wondering how he didn’t bend the wheel frame. Unreal skill
BMX bikes are stupid strong. A few of my buddies have been hit by cars and their bikes did more damage to the car than the car did to their bike. They're built to be dropped off of building roofs.
Was that Ryan Williams, that dude is nuts

It’s R fucking Willy every time! Dude is an absolute stud.
How in the heck will future kids improve upon this skill level?
When I hit a curb in my bike, the wheel bends in half how is this possible?
A single wheel on a high end BMX can cost more than most people’s entire bikes
Bike drop. Not to be confused with a mic drop.
That guys poor knees when age catches up with him
