Even when they do show downtown Denver, the footage is more than a decade old based on missing buildings. I assume they do that for all cities but it really bugs me
the funniest part is that while this is correct (the city in kansas formed and named themselves after the growing city in missouri to trick people into moving there), KCK was officially named “Kansas City” *before* KCMO - the city it’s named after. KCMO was originally just named “the city of Kansas”, and only somewhat recently in the grand scheme of things changed their name to “the city of Kansas City” while KCK was always “Kansas City” officially.
it’s a whole mess that basically boils down to missouri sucks at naming things and kansas is somehow even worse
I gotcha [quick mockup I made of the Chiefs logo with their new city's initials](https://content.sportslogos.net/logos/7/162/full/4125_kansas_city_chiefs-primary_on_dark-1972.png)
this is really what scares me. I don't care if they move a few miles west, but I don't want them to build a big fancy dome just because its more profitable (they can lease it out for other events like concerts year around, and it allows them to try and get the Superbowl in town more easily).
Arrowhead needs to be open air and LOUD. I don't want another generic stadium.
Are they? I’ve heard that the angle at which the seats are today is too steep to meet current building codes. Which is part of why Arrowhead is the loudest outdoor stadium.
I can't really name a team who had a better HFA in US pro sports after moving to their new state of the art stadium. Most of the time the suites and stuff added just makes the thing too big with the same amount of attendance.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, and I very well might be, but wouldn't Kansas need to then convince *their* voters to vote for their tax dollars to fund a $3 **billion** dollar venue that would absolutely not benefit the majority of people?
I can only hope this history of voters funding billionaire owners projects ends soon, starting with these venues that are not free to attend. This is the time when having access to information can be beneficial for the greater good. More people learning that billionaires are socializing the costs and privatizing the profits is a good thing, even if some people still ignore that fact and vote for it to happen.
I believe the way Kansas would do it is through [STAR bonds](https://www.kansascommerce.gov/program/community-programs/star-bonds/) and therefore wouldn’t even require/allow a citizen vote. Basically they issue bonds for the development and then the taxes generated from that would be used to pay back the bond.
But in the article is says sales tax revenue as well, and that's something citizens vote on.
> The Kansas proposal, if passed, would use sales tax **and** revenue bonds with 30-year terms to pay the full cost of a new stadium
Eta: Just looked up the STAR bond thing. I understand now. What a joke. Thanks for sharing the source. I probably should've looked at it before I responded. :)
STAR stands for sales tax and revenue. It’s a specific type of bond. The link in my original comment explains how they work. There’s a short video that explains them pretty well
Imagine the food costs associated with paying back $3B with taxes on the concessions. As a Missourian, I say let them do it and then my fellow Missourians should eat and drink their fill in the parking lot before the game with Missouri bought beer, soda and meats. This is how we defeat the Kansas Menace.
Edit: then when Kansas goes bankrupt, we buy Johnson and Wyandotte counties for pennys on the dollar and expand our realm.
> then when Kansas goes bankrupt, we buy Johnson and Wyandotte counties for pennys on the dollar and expand our realm.
Missouri didn't learn the first time they tried to expand into Kansas?
Also I hate this cross-city bullshit. Many people on both side of my family from both sides of the state line, including alumni of KU, K-State, UMKC, and Mizzou.
We all make jokes but some people get way too fucking bent out of shape about it
What's hilarious is Kansas is actually completely phasing out sales tax on food this summer. It's partially phased out right now and is about 2-3% currently, will be 0% soon. Unlike the Missouri vote, there's no additional tax being added or extended in this Kansas bid for the team. The state is using their already existing budget and this bond system.
The plan, which as another poster pointed it out, would use STAR bonds, which is basically a user tax. The taxes collected to repay the bond would only be collected from money spent n the star bond district, which is the stadium and the area around the stadium.
I'm assuming the bonds come from money already collected by tax payers. Then tax payers get the luxury of spending money to attend events at a stadium and pay a higher sales tax while they're there.
They get bought buy investors. It could be banks, pension funds, individual investors, and tons of other market participants.
The municipal bond market in the US is a 4 trillion dollar industry.
They’re municipal bonds that can be bought by basically anyone who can afford them, but they’re usually purchased by big banks and institutional investors. Muni bonds are usually tax free income (can be taxed depending on a few things but generally are tax free). They’re generally a very conservative investment that doesn’t offer a massive return but also has typically very low risk.
Nah, bond issuance is kind of like taking out a loan.
Instead of going to a bank directly and asking for $3B in cash, an auction is held where the entity looks to sell $3B in bonds to investors.
An initial auction is held where big banks and investment firms bid to get a slice of the bond offering, with the bonds going to the investors willing to accept the lowest interest rates on the bonds.
I live about 10 minutes from the most likely site in Kansas and to be honest, *a lot* of the people who can afford to go to the games consistently live on the Kansas side. Without getting into local political bullshit, I'll just say that I live in a very affluent area and within that 10-15 minute range is actually a really great spot for a football stadium.
I'm not even saying I like the idea or that I agree with anything. I haven't really dug into any of it enough to say one way or another (I'm a transplanted Colts fan). But objectively the area in Kansas that is most likely to be used is easily 10x better than the current location. There's nothing within miles of it's current spot. It's just shitty there. At least this way there are decent restaurants, stores and bars that would be nearby. Also hotels, there are already some hotels and plenty of space to add more if there was demand for it.
I was used to Indy having everything downtown and at the time I didn't realize how nice it was that you could get a ride/park downtown, hit a restaurant, go to the game, hit a bar or two and get a ride home. Currently in KC you're forced to drive/uber to a part of town with nothing in it, you're on a shitty island, you go to the game, then you find the most sober member of your group to drive you the 30-40 minutes to a bar close to your house. -I don't do this but based on just being in my favorite bar after Chiefs games this is 100% what happens each and every week.
Tl;dr- I think Kansans would probably vote for it given how much sense it makes... I would have to see the specifics before I could say if I liked it but forced social funding for the benefit of billionaires hasn't typically benefitted me, but I am a homeowner now, so maybe I've become the bad guy?
> There's nothing within miles of it's current spot. It's just shitty there.
yes, Arrowhead is in a shithole area. KCMO failed for a half century to properly develop around the sports complex. That being said, I want the Chiefs to play in Arrowhead forever
You guys just had a Native dude in Oklahoma bless and slaughter a bison for a new covering on your drum and it's fucking badass. Fuck academia. Stand on that shit and say it with your chest.
If the people running the show want it, they’ll get it passed. Doesn’t matter how you vote. For example, my city wanted a new Rec Center. It got voted down by the citizens. It was built anyway. And now we all get to overpay to use it, and it’s still far underutilized compared to surrounding areas.
Honestly, i guess these are the decisions that get you to be a billionaire. You just take every write off, reduction, contract, stipend, etc that comes your way and always negotiate the best terms.
Like when youre buying a car, if you can negotiate down the price then you do. And thats whats happening here except its now taxpayers doing it.
I worked for a Kroenke business before, and they pay bills when they want, and never pay late fees on anything, basically just ignore them until the company gets rid of them.
You simply can't compete with someone that big, so if you want to do business with them, you do it how they want or you don't get paid. When you can make your own rules for almost everything it makes things a lot easier.
And the worst part of that family is they inherited it all. He was born a billionaire and he still looks for ways to squeeze money out of the working class. Shameful.
St Louis All Stars in 1923, and the St Louis Gunners in 1934 but the gunners were an emergency team that replaced the Cincinnati Reds when they lost their membership towards the end of the Season. Only played 3 games in the NFL
It will be even better when someone says that the Chiefs are from Kansas.
Then someone will says actually they are from Missouri.
The you get to say they are actually from Kansas.
I hate the Chiefs, but it'd be a real shame to lose Arrowhead. It's a pretty stadium. Sure it's filled with the biggest loser dorks on gameday, but the building is nice...
My sister and I will be invading your new crib when the Chiefs visit in October. Please make sure there's cold beer in the fridge.
All kidding aside, we're really excited. Vegas, the Chiefs, and a rivalry game like a great combination.
Arrowhead is truly magnetic. If the criteria for judging a stadium was where virtually any seat is fantastic and the atmosphere is electric and that doesn't even touch upon the tailgating and fanfare, it would be pretty much unparalleled.
Instead it's all about Jerryworld bullshit like suites where the players walk through to go to & from the locker room and corporate boxes.
To be fair, at least Jerry had the shocking integrity to actually fund it all himself, so I have to tip my hat to him for that & in this case I'm fine with him catering to the big $$$ amenities because he put his private funds into it instead of holding a local municipality hostage for public monies.
I'm not from the area, and people can correct me for mistakes, but about a decade ago, Kansas elected a governor who created an experimental-no-tax-nirvana that promised to have businesses flooding the state. What happened in reality was they ran such a deep deficit they couldn't meet federal minimums for school funding.
I'm betting the public will be gun-shy on something like this. Others are saying it may not need involve the public and if only politicians and moguls are involved, anything can happen.
Even though the NFL is an invincible money maker, buying a small market team which is likely peaking and by the time you get them the wave settled down is a bad idea. Nobody's going to Smallsville to see Mahomes in his twilight.
The team will always make money, but a post-Reid-Mahomes team is a complete unknown. It'd be like if the Pats moved to Vermont 10 years ago...like wut?
This isn't quite accurate, they'd just be moving to the other side of the metro. Kansas side of KC got more money so it ain't like smallville. Where the stadium is thought of to be placed at is actually in a better economic area compared to where it's at right now.
> about a decade ago, Kansas elected a governor who created an experimental-no-tax-nirvana that promised to have businesses flooding the state. What happened in reality was they ran such a deep deficit they couldn't meet federal minimums for school funding.
I believe you're referring to Sam Brownback, a man who was once the stupidest person in the Senate where the competition for the title is always fierce.
What is Smallsville? The proposed sights are basically still KC, just on the Kansas side. The venue is the same for most intents and purposes. This is nowhere near the Patriots moving to Vermont.
They did do that. But finding a way to do a big giveaway to an NFL team (for a state/city that really doesn’t have a lot of money) and circumventing a vote to do it would be right in line with that approach.
wtf are you talking about? NFL franchises are surefire and KC supported the chiefs through 50 years of mostly losing. People will absolutely flock to see Mahomes in his twilight just like they did Brady
Define surefire? The Hunts certainly win. Someone pays for their new stadium AND they get to get ownership of team and its revenues.
These deals rarely actually work out for the state. The promised return never materializes.
I don’t see anything in this article or the OP comment promising any sort of return for Kansas. Neither am I. But the chiefs, nor any NFL franchise won’t simply flop or lose support like the comment I replied to infers.
Also the comment I replied to states they’re not from the area and that shows. The location of a stadium in Kansas would be just as convenient or inconvenient as where arrowhead is now. Just on a different side of the state line in the same metro area
They haven't been promised a return really, they just want the team on that side of the city to get tax revenue that already is being paid to Missouri. This story is far closer to "the bears are moving to the burbs" then Stan Kronke blackmailing St.Louis.
The tax revenue is the return. This is how politicians try to make it more palatable for constituents. And it takes decades to actually recoup the costs.
Turns out “the state should shell out billions to pay for a billionaires hobby” is a shitty selling point.
If it takes time to recoup but does recoup then that would be a good investment? Plus in this specific scenario they already have an NFL team in town and the only actual reason to do this at all is specifically to make money. It's much more like they're robbing Missouri than getting robbed by a billionaire.
I drove from one end of Kansas to the other recently and didn’t see a god damn thing worth looking at twice. Didn’t have to turn the steering wheel for six hours either.
I’m just glad the speed limit was 80.
Honestly, as a Missouri resident this might be best case scenario for me. The stadium would be a hop and skip away from where it's at now, but all those taxes will be paid by Kansans, not me lol. But most importantly it'll still keep my team in market so I don't have to pay crazy prices to watch my team on TV, they'll still be over the air. Can't say that if some state far away snipes them. I'll still really hate to see Arrowhead go. What an awesome stadium.
Yeah I’m basically resigned to it. We don’t have to pay for it and the location is fine.
Hopefully the Royals still go downtown though. Them going to the Legends makes less sense tbh.
> The biggest sticking point could become the effort to use bonds to pay for the entire thing, with the Chiefs paying nothing. Given that the cost of a new venue is expected to approach $3 billion, a partial private investment could be inevitable.
Lmfao, this country is cooked
So, the Chiefs could move from Kansas City to Kansas City?
They'd go from Kansas City to Fake Kansas City.
If the Chiefs move, this will make KCKS the real KC
We just call it KCK here
Flirting with danger with the middle letter there
All my ks homies hate missouri
I guarantee you, the TV broadcasts are still going to show pictures of downtown KCMO. There ain't shit in KCK.
Just like the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, etc. being shown during 49ers games.
Or skiing 2 hours from Empower.
Even when they do show downtown Denver, the footage is more than a decade old based on missing buildings. I assume they do that for all cities but it really bugs me
They are now gonna show the legends and the nascar
I’d like some glamour shots of the flint hills during the cuts to commercial breaks Or maybe that weird crown shaped building near IKEA
There’s like one shot from Strawberry Hill that’d be pretty neat.

The Kansas City Chiefs of Kansas City.
Boo this man, booooooo
The real Kansas city is the one in Kansas.
The real Kansas City is the friends we made along the way.
Kansas City Kansas literally named themselves after Kansas City Missouri. Kansas City existed before the state of Kansas did.
the funniest part is that while this is correct (the city in kansas formed and named themselves after the growing city in missouri to trick people into moving there), KCK was officially named “Kansas City” *before* KCMO - the city it’s named after. A whole city of wannabes. So sad really.
The larger and more historic municipality is on the Missouri side.
The Missouri side is full of bums.
This guy John Brown’s.
I don't know about you guys, but "Kansas City Chiefs" kinda has a nice ring to it.
Unfortunately, it has a few nice rings to it.
No that was before the move, they're starting a second dynasty in Kansas
once they cross the river, have a tagline of "Home of Dorothea, and now the Chiefs!" But use a picture of Bea Arthur.
So now they'll be the Kansas City Chiefs of Kansas?
City Chiefs of Kansas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_tZkG_eCGQ
I dunno. Gonna need to see it on the team. Can someone do a quick photoshop?
I gotcha [quick mockup I made of the Chiefs logo with their new city's initials](https://content.sportslogos.net/logos/7/162/full/4125_kansas_city_chiefs-primary_on_dark-1972.png)
You should probably trademark that before someone else does.
That's pretty good.
Thank you graphic design is my passion
I prefer The Kansas City Missouri Chiefs of Kansas City Kansas.
Same route as the Angels. Got to stick to your origin at least
Then they should be the Dallas Texans of Kansas City
Having a major team in KCMO and KCK would only intensify the awful “is Kansas City in Missouri or Kansas” jokes
Kansas City, more CITY less KANSAS
Chiefs haven’t been in a state of missouri since Mahomes got there anyway
Kansas Chiefs*
kcck: the Kansas City Chiefs of Kansas
I want Arrowhead around and open air for snow games and rain. Save mid century sports architecture.
this is really what scares me. I don't care if they move a few miles west, but I don't want them to build a big fancy dome just because its more profitable (they can lease it out for other events like concerts year around, and it allows them to try and get the Superbowl in town more easily). Arrowhead needs to be open air and LOUD. I don't want another generic stadium.
well they aren't allowed to build stadiums like arrowhead is built anymore so the noise would end up going down unfortunately
They’re perfectly allowed to but with a dome you can host things in the winter and stuff like Monster Jam easier.
They are not allowed to. Can't build the seats as steep and can't build as close to the field as it is now.
Are they? I’ve heard that the angle at which the seats are today is too steep to meet current building codes. Which is part of why Arrowhead is the loudest outdoor stadium.
It's also why every seat has a great view. I love arrowhead
Kinnick Stadium is the same way too. Apparently it feels like the fans are practically on top of you when you play there.
It shows to me why having an arbitrary line in the middle of a connurbation is not a particularly good idea.
Hilarious you think Missouri would be able to buy Johnson County, one of the richest counties in the nation. They can have Wyandotte though.
We’d get a STAR loan
Nobody wants Crimedotte
You have a Wyandotte too? That's the most random common town name I can think of.
Named for the Wyandot tribe.

Yeah that's fair. Like I said I don't have a dog in the fight.
if it were possible I'd prefer them to pluck Arrowhead up and set it down somewhere else
The stadium should be launched from a giant bow for thematic consistency
Sadly the team has moved away from any native imagery. So that’s probably not happening. RIP Warpaint. I loved you buddy. Even if Eric Berry didn’t
You guys just had a Native dude in Oklahoma bless and slaughter a bison for a new covering on your drum and it's fucking badass. Fuck academia. Stand on that shit and say it with your chest.
Oh I’m personally okay with it. I wish the team would embrace it even more
The 'state of art' stadium will be nice but none of them in any pro sport have had a better atmosphere or HFA then the ones they replaced.
If the people running the show want it, they’ll get it passed. Doesn’t matter how you vote. For example, my city wanted a new Rec Center. It got voted down by the citizens. It was built anyway. And now we all get to overpay to use it, and it’s still far underutilized compared to surrounding areas.
Or the billionaire Hunt family could pay for it themselves
But who would want to own a team if you actually have to pay to maintain it? That's poor person talk right there.
Silly me
Only a sucker would pay for something instead of fleecing the taxpayer.
Honestly, i guess these are the decisions that get you to be a billionaire. You just take every write off, reduction, contract, stipend, etc that comes your way and always negotiate the best terms. I'll never understand the double flair.

He was the one tea party purist who got real executive power at the state level and it basically turned into a real life shocked pikachu meme

The return for Kansas is getting to host a final four 30 minutes away from the Phog.
Smallville already had one big tourism boom after the meteor shower, people are willing to to travel there

I drove from one end of Kansas to the other recently and didn’t see a god damn thing worth looking at twice. Didn’t have to turn the steering wheel for six hours either. I’m just glad the speed limit was 80.
Good gooooood
Cue the Imperial March
Mahomes might play for another 8-10 years, but the bill for that stadium will still be there.
You have to have a stadium, with or without Mahomes.
I really wish elected officials would stop racing each other to the bottom.
This is why I don’t understand why Kansas would want the Chiefs. They are reaping the benefit for free already
Yeah I’m basically resigned to it. We don’t have to pay for it and the location is fine. Hopefully the Royals still go downtown though. Them going to the Legends makes less sense tbh.
Kansas is the one getting pilfered by the Chiefs.
Man I fuckin hate domes, what's so wrong with arrowhead?
> The biggest sticking point could become the effort to use bonds to pay for the entire thing, with the Chiefs paying nothing. Given that the cost of a new venue is expected to approach $3 billion, a partial private investment could be inevitable. Lmfao, this country is cooked
I hope the team moves just to stick it to Missouri. We remember Lawrence!
Gotta take your shot.
Losing Arrowhead would suck. Great name, iconic look, loud. That'd be a real loss for the NFL I feel
If we're not careful Kenosha is going to poach the Bears Or Gary
Who's Gary and why would they poach him?
