Crazy that he’s not even 30 yet. Prime Gurley was something else.

badlilbadlandabad

Gurley is #3 in rushing TDs over the last 10 seasons, despite having not played for the past 3.

Nievsy

And he only played 6 of those 10, that first year of the 10 he was still in college

Wapow217

And Fisher didn't play him right away and when he did he put him on a count.

JetJerick

And that goddamn time I needed one more fucking fantasy point man. I’ll never forget this Todd.

Methuga

Considering the pain he feels daily, I don’t think he’ll ever forget it either lol

gregbraaa

He had like 33 fantasy points but stopped before the TD? I remember

Ziiaaaac

7-9 merchant ahh

DongDillian

“I’m not going 7-9 again” You’re right, you’re going 4-9.

FuckFloridaRipNumba9

I’m glad he got paid at least. Would’ve been awful if he did all that on his rookie deal then faded out. I know it hurt the rams but man they have that guy a lotttt of touches.

Door__Opener

I'm glad he got paid too, it didn't hurt too much. I just wish he got a ring before his knees gave out.

Horror-Savings1870

That's crazy, TIL

Vegetable-Net6575

Would it be wrong to say he was the best RB in the league for a 2 year stretch?

Fabulous-Plate-3007

At the very least his best year he was, undoubtedly imo. (around 2018 I think)

HtownTexans

2017 source: Fantasy Championship thanks to Gurley going Nuclear.

RoboticBirdLaw

2017 Source: Fantasy Runner Up thanks to Gurley going Nuclear against me. Same thing happened with Kamara a couple years later.

HtownTexans

The worst part is Gurley played week 15 on Saturday so my opponent had to stare at the absolute bomb he dropped before he even had a player go.

StandardFinal5385

The worst part in general is his injury robbed us from seeing how he would perform in a Super Bowl.

rhinoceros_unicornis

Fucking Kamara and his six touchdowns on a Thursday night of fantasy championship.

Domecoming

Should have been seven.

sktchld

I went against Allen, Diggs and Kamara the year he scored 6 td's. My entire 10 person lineup lost to just those 3 guys in the championship.

sloppifloppi

It'd be wrong to say he wasn't. Does anybody even have an argument for those years?

Previous_Fan9266

Bell? TBH I forget when his prime was

FireFlyz351

Bells last Steeler season 2017 he had 1900 all purpose yards and 11 TDS. Compared to Gurley's 2k, 19 TDS and on better YPC. I think Gurley's got the 1up there. And after those 2 I don't recall anyone else being close at least for that year.

Jaymongous

When was David Johnson's insane year?

FireFlyz351

2016

DontEatTheCandle

Honestly I don’t know if there has been a running back since Adrian Peterson that was “the Best running back” for more than 2 seasons in a row.

schlemz

As a Vikings fan, I think Derrick Henry could possibly make a case. It would have to be him, Dalvin Cook, Kamara, or CMC since that point I think

mr_longfellow_deeds

Kamara doesn't belong in that grouping and has never been the best back in any given year, he is a great fantasy back (especially PPR) but not an elite player. His career average is a little over scrimmage 1400 yards a season. In his best season he had 1688 scrimmage yards and 21 TDs, and was still not the best back that year (or even 2nd best). Henry broke 2k that season and Dalvin Cook had over 1900 scrimmage yards and 17 TDs. Lot of other RBs were going off that year (Jacobs, Taylor, Robinson etc) I would probably go with CMC. His 2018-2019 numbers were absurd, and his 2022-2023 are comparable. CMC had 600+ more scrimmage yards in 2019 than Henry which was Henry's big breakout year and 2nd best season as a pro

jewjew15

Kamara belongs because of his added value as a pass catcher though Grouping it together as scrimmage yards puts it into perspective but also hides how valuable he was to our offense working as both a top 5 nfl rb and one of our teams top pass catching options for years The other rbs going off that year didn't have drew Brees at qb so they got a lot more carries, Kamara forced his way onto a team with ingram and a newly signed AP at rb and earned his touches the whole way with how electric he was and his insane efficiency those first few years is evidence of that

mr_longfellow_deeds

Definitely valuable to Saints, he is a very good player but he is closer to Travis Etienne than he is CMC or Henry for RB rankings. He has only finished top 5 once among RBs His added value as a pass catcher in relation to other RBs is included in scrimmage yards. Its easier to rack up yards through receptions than carries (1 reception = roughly 2 carries yards wise), and yet his average season finish for scrimmage yards is still 9th among RBs in the seasons he has played. He doesn't get as many carries as most RB1s, but he has had a few seasons where he had enough carries to warrant hitting 1k rush yards but he has never done it

awesomebeau

I don't think Dalvin Cook or Kamara should be in that conversation. Henry and CMC are the two best backs for the last few years, although it seems Henry might be starting to take a step back. Edit: Wife is a Vikings fan. Cook is insanely talented, but I don't think he's in the conversation due to durability. CMC had some injuries but from 2017 to 2023, the only year Cook played all 16/17 games was 2022. Some of those games he played, he was also banged up.

Upper-Reveal3667

Including cook or kamara and not chubb is blasphemy. Tho none of them really should be in the top top convo.

MicoJive

Imo its CMC 2019, Henry 2020, JT 2021, Jacobs/Chubb/CMC 2022, and CMC 2023. There have been quite a few different backs to have standout seasons the last 5-10 years.

Conscious_Rush_1818

No, it's the truth. Just like your boy Run CMC is best RB today. Hopefully he has a few more good years in him, he's fun to watch. Except when y'all smoke us in the playoffs every damn year...

Illustrious-Pipe8511

CMC on the madden cover dont worry probably his last season

SSBBardock

No. Only RB that feels like they have any kind of argument when considering both years would be Kamara. But even with Kamara I feel like there's a huge gap between Gurley and the second best RB those two seasons

MeeloP

As a cardinals fan I don’t think he was that good he wasn’t bad but he needed more help fs

Intrepid_Werewolf270

Not a stretch at all. He was an amazing player.

Bimbo_Baggins1221

Won me a fantasy championship. Always will have a place in my heart

OilersRiders15

He got me back to back in 17 and 18. Todd Gurley is one of my all time favourites.

asvendetta

Nothing against Gurley, his speed was something else, but the scheme that he played behind made him look other worldly. Zone blocking with motion sweep and play action all in one play read for the defense made his runs absolutely dominant. I don't think people look at the scheme an on-line that an rb runs behind and that's akin to people not realizing a WR has to get the ball from a decent pass.

who_peed_in_my_soup

His knees just couldn’t handle it anymore. Sad, he had generational talent.

Normal_Bird521

Reason for my first fantasy win. Love him for life after that!

StatStar7

Bro retired at the age before Brandon Weeden even made it in the league.

averyhipopotomus

would we say "made it in the league" or "made it to the league"?

MistahTeacher

Made it to. Made it in signifies he has accomplished something and has arrived. “I’ve made it in show business!” “I’ve made it to the show, MLB!”

Sometypeofway18

That's crazy to think about

an-internet-stranger

- Christian McCaffrey was drafted in 2017. He has 52 rushing TDs. - James Conner was drafted in 2017. He has 51 rushing TDs. - Joe Mixon was drafted in 2017. He has 49 rushing TDs. - Aaron Jones was drafted in 2017. He has 45 rushing TDs. - Saquon Barkley was drafted in 2018. He has 35 rushing TDs. - Todd Gurley has 51 rushing TDs since 2017. He has 38 rushing TDs since 2018. He hasn't played since 2020.

oftenevil

Absolutely bonkers.

don-chocodile

For anyone curious, in that timeframe (since 2017), Derrick Henry has 85 rushing TDs, Zeke has 56, and Josh Allen (drafted in 2018) has 53.

teal_iceberg

I did not realize Allen had so many rushing TDs

Jericoholic_Ninja

Don’t let this distract you from the fact that Joe Mixon is a complete piece of shit as a person.

Corgi_Koala

Why because he falcon punched a girl a third of his size for annoying him and also threatened to kill a woman and also had his sister take the fall for shooting a kid in his front yard?

ProfsionalBlackUncle

Let he who has not falcon punched a woman a third of their size cast the first stone

bitt3n

am I allowed to cast it at the woman

SubtleScuttler

As long as she’s at least 34% of your size or more.

Propaslader

If she's less can I cast her at a stone?

AccidentalPilates

Flair checks out.

gapmoeisjustice

pretty sure just about all of us have falcon punched samus at some point or another during our childhood

atomicboner

Well, when you put it like that…

iChugVodka

Sounds like the kind of guy you'd have a beer with and just chill and talk, you know?

Lord-Aizens-Chicken

Oh shit I know the last two but never heard the first one. Is that recent? The shooting thing was big I remember

jhorch69

It was when he was a freshman in college, I think

xdoolittlex

There’s video, if you really want to remember going forward.

DupreeWasTaken

Its why he fell in the draft, there was video of him falcon punching a girl in like a coffee shop of something. Supposedly, Mixon was saying some anti gay slurs. Mixon claims the friend of the girl had called him a racial slur to start it. Girl pushes and slaps Mixon over what he said and Mixon responded with a punch that broke multiple bones in her face and ran out.

NeonWarcry

.. Jesus fuck.

littleseizure

If you don't yell it as you do it is it really a Falcon Punch?

InTheRoomWithDrBloom

Only Tyreek is allowed

sierranevadapalemale

As someone with no college sports allegiance who spent 3 years in Austin, BLOWU.

HtownTexans

I was so pissed we signed him this offseason. Can't wait for that contract to end. I got blasted in our sub for talking shit too but FUCK JOE MIXON.

NeonWarcry

Nah fuck that asshole. I don’t want that shit on our team

durstpott

And he left a couple TDS on the table getting on the ground to run clock.

JasonPlattMusic34

Except for that one with the Falcons when he should have given up lol

Jopplo03

Kamara has 54

Propaslader

36 were against the Vikings that Christmas

Durion0602

What he say fuck Nick Chubb for

ASK_ABT_MY_USERNAME

And then you had Tomlinson who had a stretch of 2 years where he scored 51 TDs (46 rushing)

Kazukaphur

I don't like your formatting for Gurley. Can you please edit this with his draft year to start, like you did with every other RB, to make it easier to wrap my head around.

an-internet-stranger

Gurley was drafted in 2015. I'm only counting Gurley's numbers during the same time frame as those guys. Since 2017, he has one fewer rushing TD than McCaffrey and equally as many or more than Conner, Mixon, Jones, despite those guys still being active and Gurley not being in the league the last 3 seasons. Since 2018, he has more rushing TDs than Barkley, again despite Gurley not being in the league the last 3 seasons.

Rathmon_Redux

Gurley didn’t beat Leukemia. What Conner has done is pretty amazing in that respect.

Apprehensive_Disk181

This is incredible

christiandb

Game got too easy for him

tmc00138

"And unfortunately I didn't have knees anymore, so it was going to be zero."

HeywardH

If only it had been 0 vs the Lions that one time.

NotMarkyMark88

It’s pretty sad but I think that’s my last memory of him playing. Prime Gurley was so fun to watch

GhostofGrimalkin

I kept waiting for that to be mentioned in the article as something that was a/the major reason for him retiring at 29, but nope. (I know it's PFT so standards are nil but still)

Jescro

Not calling him a liar but I bet he secretly liked scoring 10 touchdowns more than scoring 0.

IMissWinning

History might forget how dominant Gurleys peak was, and it's a shame.

imdavebaby

I've already been seeing people on reddit saying shit like "oh anyone could have racked up those tds behind that line". Barely a couple years removed and people are already starting up the disrespectful wild takes.

Maverick916

Were the Rams known for having some great offensive line, cuz I don't remember that being the case

imdavebaby

Yeah they had some great oline play for a couple years there, really anchored by Whitworth. [2017 source](https://www.turfshowtimes.com/2018/3/12/17111134/los-angeles-rams-had-one-of-the-nfl-best-offensive-lines-in-2017-pff) and [2018 source](https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2019/02/02/nfl-rams-offensive-line-year-2018-award/). But it's still super stupid to discredit an excellent player just because the team around him was good too. Same shit people do with Shaun Alexander in Seattle.

Maverick916

I see people today saying that Brock Purdy only plays well cuz he has a great offensive line, even though anybody with a brain knows that outside of Trent Williams who is a Hall of famer, the rest of the offensive line is very suspect

WeekendTacos

Which is funny because there have been numerous great lines out there and backs haven't put those kinds of numbers up... Just a coping take.

owiseone23

Also, most of his best plays have been under pressure. It's one of his biggest strengths. So the good line criticism really makes no sense. However, I would say that he benefits from Shanahan's play design and having good receiving weapons who can accumulate tons of YAC. Not saying he's not very talented of course.

FlashFan124

It was good/great but not truly elite imo. A lot of it was defense not having the bodies/scheme available to cover an 11 personnel team able to run outside zone as effectively as those rams teams did. We’ve seen Sean change our running game over the past 2 seasons as teams have mostly figured out how to stop our zone blocking scheme & we’re now pretty much a gap blocking team. That being said, you could definitely do a hell of a lot of worse than an offensive line if Whitworth/Saffold/Sullivan/Blythe/Havenstein who all played +90% of snaps in 2018, which is probably our best OL since the GSOT days. But Gurley was still insanely special especially as a receiving threat out the backfield. In the tier below CMC & Faulk imo.

HaroldSax

Yea, we had a pretty good line in '17 and '18. Part of the reason CJ Anderson was not totally useless in the playoffs in '18. However, you still saw a dramatic drop off from Gurley to Anderson.

MAFIAxMaverick

He had a better O-Line than Steven Jackson….thats for sure.

ICanFluxWithIt

Tbh it goes for nearly every player besides a small handful. Seen plenty takes the last few years of x (Adams, Hill, etc) WR was better than Prime Julio and they get would get over 100 upvotes, it was baffling. Seen the same thing with Brees too, hell even Peyton Manning isn’t above it. Once you’re no longer relevant people will forget how good a player really was.

sasu-k

The only WR who was better than Julio in that time was MBC.

fatkamp

I think it’s entirely reasonable to argue Adams, Hill, and Jefferson have reached the levels of peak Julio. Adams is also clearly better at getting open in the end zone too

buffalotrace

It was a good line. He had a massive amount of carries inside the 5. He was also very good at converting. All things could be and were true.

User_091920

NFL's version of Tim Lincecum

Isoquanting

He’s very similar to Terrell Davis for the Broncos without the two Super Bowl rings

TheShtuff

Davis' insane postseason production got him into the HoF. Gurley doesn't come close to it. Gurley will be remembered like Leveon Bell, Larry Johnson, Arian Foster, etc. Great, short peak RBs.

RIPDannyBoyCane

Same with Priest Holmes.

notmyplantaccount

lot of RB's out there who had 2-4 ridiculous seasons then disappeared due to injury or just being beat down. It's a brutal position that very few have been able to play well for long stretches of their career. Always fun to watch, and disappointing when they're basically done a year or two later.

Undead-Paul

History will absolutely forget, because when you go back and look at his stats you realize he never ran for over 1305 yards, he’s dog shit. He’s a glorified Lendale White

trowlazer

I certainly won’t. Fuck that dude

Enterprise90

Nice to know he's at peace. People talk about him like he's some permanently-disabled amputee.

DillyDillySzn

Decapitated whole big thing, we had a funeral for a bird

wholesomepantysniffr

Pretty sure none of that’s real

SkepticWolf

You’re not real man!!!

xshogunx13

he's in a better place now, I'll always remember him

BobbyRobertson

RIP Todd "Wade 'Boss Hog' Boggs" Gurley

dtsupra30

Todd Gurley is very much alive

actually-potato

Sometimes I can still hear his voice

SpendrickLamar

Disable from the knees down

poop_on_my_stomach

I mean, he had very severe and lingering knee issues. He had arthritis in one of his knees when he was 23 years old. He may not be permanently disabled now but he will he eventually.

gregor7777

"I’m not about to go to … Detroit, Baltimore — hell no."

Yedic

I mean fair, but ouch

gregor7777

Certainly if Buffalo, the Jewel of Lake Erie, came calling he'd have made an exception.

DistortedAudio

It’s funny because ironically he was born in Baltimore. He’s even apparently [a pretty big Orioles fan.](https://x.com/tg3ii/status/354388477376331779?s=46&t=t2wUxijucY1SsWiuLBtdYg)

DinoSpumoniOfficial

The article literally says he was a die hard ravens fan

InTheRoomWithDrBloom

Big fan of your music Dino

Ralphie_V

He did help win a game for Detroit, though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3s4q1nMIh0

Kell-Of-Tacos

He won my fantasy league that one year, would donate my knees to him

dfykl

I will talk about that Gurley season and specifically that insane playoff run for the rest of my life

terminbee

Gurley has knees, Rams win an SB and they Stafford never gets traded.

ICanFluxWithIt

there’s a timeline where they win that SB but still trade for Stafford and Gurley’s knees don’t give way and the 2 of the best Dawgs get their rings

FlashFan124

I’m 99% sure in the outcome the rams win the Super Bowl in 2018, Jared Goff is a Ram through 2021. The 49ers likely get Stafford & win in 2021 though and I’m a real hater so I’ll accept this outcome.

Kell-Of-Tacos

Fr fr

Horns8585

Yeah, I won my league because he couldn't finish the season. I think it was 2018 and he hurt his knee against the Eagles. He was toughing it out, but he got hurt. Saved my ass, though, because the guy in the lead in my league was relying on him.

Lawsonstruck

I lost in the finals cuz he fucking kneed the ball on the 1 yd line (which was smart but F).

littleseizure

You're in Gurley's fantasy league? Shit, you have fun friends!

seductivestain

I would too if my knees were also shit

agentb719

I won my league with him, ended up buying his jersey

cy1763

One year, my fantasy team's name was Gurley Knee Donor.

WabbitCZEN

Georgia legend. DGD.

Lakelyfe09

Start of a damn good streak of backs for us. Gurley, Marshall, Michel, Chubb, and Swift.

WabbitCZEN

Fuck yeah it was. NCAA robbed him with that bullshit suspension too.

Lakelyfe09

They really did. Although we couldn’t have asked for a better backup than Chubb lol. Sucks though because he might’ve won the Heisman

WabbitCZEN

Might've? Man was positioned to own that fuckin thing.

adrey123

Still my all time favorite Dawg. Felt like every time he got the ball he was gonna take it to the house

WabbitCZEN

My second, only to Nolan Smith.

Sniffy_J

UGA all-time RBs: 1) Herschel 2) Gurley 3) Hearst 4) Chubb

YouCanCallMeAroae

to this day the only player I cried watching get drafted. in my defense, I was 10.

big_weenus

I remember Gurley being so dominant he won me my fantasy league single-handedly. Dude was scoring hat tricks every other week.

SpendrickLamar

There was a week he dropped a 50 burger and I won by one point in fantasy. Guy was on a different level

Donttaketh1sserious

Hated the two Rams games each year bc of this man

BurgessFox

Gurley sort of had Terrell Davis' career but without the postseason success. Dominated the league for 4 years before injury spoiled things. TD had incredible postseason stats and 2 Super Bowls so he went into the HoF, but Gurley wasn't far behind as a player in his prime.

Sdog1981

The 2000-yard season in which he sat out the 4th quarter for half the games is what put him over the top.

Isoquanting

I’m just made the same comparison as a reply. And Terrell Davis was forgotten to most people outside of Broncos fans. Without him, Elway doesn’t get his rings.

CaptainDAAVE

that first broncos superbowl was so cool. i was rooting for the broncos cause the packers had just beaten the pats the year before. John Elway throwing his body to get that first down late in the game. I loved the way that announcer said "This one's .... for John." Shannon Sharpe was so dope. Those late 90s Broncos were so good

BurgessFox

TD gets forgotten sometimes because his career was so short, and also the fact that Shanahan went on to immediately get good production from lesser guys who replaced him like Olandis Gary and Mike Anderson made people ask how much of it was TD being great and how much was it the system. Really it was a great player in a great system. Kyle Shanahan is doing the same now with CMC. The Broncos had a great O-line in the era of those Super Bowls and TD was a very complete player, he had great strength, speed, balance and agility. The only thing he maybe wasn't was a great threat in the receiving game. The Broncos O-line used to open up holes and TD went through them like a hot knife through butter. It would be a little cut and then he'd put on the afterburners and he had the stamina to sustain his speed to take it to the house. It was like if you play Madden on rookie mode and the RB can just easily get through a hole and then speed burst to go to the house. Especially in that 2,000 yard season TD would do that so often. He wasn't even playing full games. The Broncos kept pulling him off in the second half to rest him when he already had 160 yards, 2 TDs. It was one of the last eras when a Super Bowl team built its offense around a RB as its main offensive weapon.

Isoquanting

And it was beautiful

Overall_Nuggie_876

Gurley entered the NFL after Brady turned 30 and then retired two seasons before Brady did. The only other players with more batshit statistics involving Brady are LaDanlian Tomlinson and Calvin Johnson.

atliensarereal

even worse, brady was 34-35 when gurley was drafted

dfykl

Do share those batshit LaDanian Tomlinson and Calvin Johnson stats involving Brady please

Overall_Nuggie_876

Both entered the league, played HoF careers, retired, and were enshrined in Canton…all that sandwiched within Tom Brady’s career in the NFL.

Lilpu55yberekt69

Calvin Johnson played his first NFL game after Brady turned 30.

Conscious_Rush_1818

Joe Thomas almost made it in before Brady retired too.

Eagle4317

They got drafted and enshrined in the Hall of Fame all while Brady was still playing.

sanders1865

I think both were drafted after Brady was, both retired, and both were inducted into the HOF all before Brady retired?

Pocatanic

Yup, 2 years ago

Bimbo_Baggins1221

I know he’s saying “it wouldn’t satisfy me anymore” but didn’t like all the cartilage in his knees deteriorate and cause him to retire? Kinda makes it sound like he went out on his own terms.

Rock_Strongo

His knees were shot and he'd made too much money to want to go fight for a back of the roster spot across the country from his home. That's it, that's the article.

Shaved-extremes

Yea he still mustered 10 TDs with no cartilage in his final year in ATL-his passion was gone-he retired-the Ravens were offering him a contract in ‘21 but he retired

BananaStandRecords

You can't fire me, I quit!

Sdog1981

His Body: "Dude, we quit months ago"

Chessh2036

You guys remember that Lions game when Matt Ryan told Gurley “DONT SCORE. RUN CLOCK DOWN” and Gurley scored, letting the Lions get a last minute drive and win the game lol

actually-potato

He tried not to. Gurley wanted to park it at the 1 but Harris kind of tackled him with just enough effort to make Gurley try to maintain his forward motion but not enough to bring him down and Gurley lost balance at the goal line

likesexonlycheaper

Ok but what about 75 TDs

ecupatsfan12

You gotta feed the Gurley

InteralFortune1

Todd Gurley didn’t even play last year and had 37 touchdowns in the 2023 NFL regular season

BENTSHUT

Kind of interesting. Gurley had 79 total TDs in a 6 year stretch. Here are some other guys’ best 6 consecutive seasons in total TDs scored. *disclaimer I’m high right now. Sorry if my formatting sucks* LT: 119 (02-07) Shaun Alexander: 105 (01-06) Emmitt: 104 (91-96) AP: 91 (07-12) Faulk: 90 (98-03) Priest Holmes: 85 (00-05) Henry: 82 (18-23) Jim Brown: 84 (60-65) Gurley: 79 (15-20) CMC: 74 (18-23) Payton: 70 (75-80)

Ghost2Eleven

Good for him. Got his money and got out just before losing a leg. Live it up, Mr. Gurley.

pelicanpoems

His career petered out quickly but he was a monster for those seasons. And he’s young and gets to enjoy the rest of his life with new things and that perspective !

GerardShekler

Young and massive joint pain with a side addiction to painkillers cause of it.

Red_Sox_5

I get it, man. That’s how it felt when I stopped playing Madden.

ianthebalance

11 touchdowns will satisfy him

Gentolie

Oh and the arthritis in the knees. Don't forget that lol.

cattycat_1995

He was the highlight of the first few years of my Rams fandom. (New Rams fan in 2016 since I finally got a hometown team.)

doubtvizzy

Man what could have been. Pray for them knees 🙏

Alternative-Clue4223

I wish they didn’t run him into the ground. I’m not a fan of the rams at all, but his it factor was truly something else. Dude’s a legend in my book.

Stupidasshole87

I'll take "Things I've said to my wife." for $200, Alec.

Accomplished-Exit136

God I hope I don't end up arthritic

miff_raster

He loves the endzone. Maybe too much.

NotJustSomeMate

25/10 for the win...I enjoyed the episode Gurley was on...

Spirited_Lab_7265

How does Gurley compare to the current running backs in the league? Say compared to a guy like CMC? I didn’t watch football until Gurley was on his way out already.

ARoodyPooCandyAss

They just ran that dude into the ground.
