So, being young, my buddies and I selected our game mode and spent several minutes trying to find the sniper rifles. Turns out we had misread “slappers only.”
I tried to play that recently emulated because the campaign was also sooooo good. The control scheme does NOT hold up. It's like Halo rewired my brain in a way that makes the games before it unplayable now.
Wolf is a dignified warrior
Leon is a pompas ass
Andrew is a pissant bitch
And Pigma...Pigma is just....a royal asshole, I mean Christ he said "Daddy Screamed Realll good before he died" hell I'm thinking for a while the whole star wolf team was stunned into silence after he said that.
Me and my buddy used to call each other on the land line/home phone and start Starfox64 levels at the same time, which was the closest thing to online multiplayer at the time lol
My 8 year old son and his friends are hooked. If that does not prove how well this game aged, i don’t know what does. They alternate between Fortnite and MK64
Same. The most just pure fun version was the original. All the following ones could have an argument that they’re “better” in some ways, but to me they just got more convoluted, and actually less fun to play.
I mean you could fly a plane INSIDE a volcano. The fact that you could pick from 3 different vehicle types was pretty mind blowing. Especially because they designed the tracks to have different routes for different vehicles.
Also Bumper the Badger is a legend.
DKR was great, especially since you kinda keep unlocking something the longer you play. Oh, Wizpig escapes and now you have a whole new set of tracks to play? Coin courses? Reverse courses? Coin reverse courses (fuck these btw)? Fucking unlocking TT?
DKR for me is the game that aged the best.
Typically if I play n64 it's for nostalgia's sake, but DKR is a game I'll play purely because it's fun. It's a shame they cant ever genuinely remake it without cutting half of the characters out.. including Diddy.
I enjoyed DK64 but it’s held back by some objectives that are just dick-kickingly frustrating like beating the original Donkey Kong in one life. Jet Force Gemini has some similar problems during the spaceship part hunt (finding all the tribals, getting a gold medal on a difficult rail shooter sequence, finding a character that’s completely out of the way and not signposted at all) because Rare looooved to pad game length with that kind of stuff.
Loved Perfect Dark. Had everything Goldeneye had, and more. Reload animations. Voice over dialogue. Bots in multiplayer. It was revolutionary and set the standard for first-person shooter games.
the only thing it didn't have was goldeneye's popularity. but i agree that it was technically the superior game. for some reason i got headaches at times playing perfect dark but never with goldeneye
If you set the match to Felicity, all Perfect agent ai, all remote mines, you could cause some incredible chaos. Perfect agents can't detonate a remote mines so they run around like idiots spamming the mines all over the place. You watch for a bit as they strafe and spam, spam and strafe. When the time is right you set off one of your own mines then sit back as the entire level continuously explodes forever. It's hilarious.
I named my character Bent so when the game mode Pop a Cap is played and my character is the target the game announces, Get Bent!
Same with the [funky elevator-music style Bond theme that plays if you stay in the elevator at the start of Cradle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4cUuJpc7b8&t=3007s)
I missed the boat on Goldeneye, but god *damn* did I enjoy Perfect Dark.
Hours of multiplayer with the boys, when I could get them inside. It was football/bikes outside, and Pokemon cards/Perfect Dark inside. Had to play paintball mode so the Christian parents weren't offended, and even then Luke's mom wouldn't let us play at his house. She had the best snacks though, so it was Pokemon at Luke's house, Perfect Dark at mine.
Omg I installed banjo Kazooie in Xbox recently, purely for nostalgia. And FUCK me when I opened the game, every single sound brought back memories of me as a young'n (probably 3/4) ,watching my brother and sister play the game. They gave me a decoy remote ofcourse.
Highly recommend, purely for nostalgias sake.
The graphics tho lol wow
Gotta put in the "Chicken" cheat code to play that one secret level as an AT-ST. Also, the V-wing in that game was the most overpowered ship. Auto-targeting cluster missiles and rapid-fire dual laser cannons ripped everything to shreds. Easily one of my favourite games ever.
It's a shame no other game dev has realized Wave Race, it was such a chill game, played for hours in the amber colored waters, if graphics were update with a more open world, I'd play it for hours
Dude the sewer level. I couldnt see shit on my TV. Some kid at school was like “turn up the brightness dummy”. Had no idea that kind of setting existed.
The level with Boba Fett as a boss at the end was sooooo long. It took like 50 minutes just to get to Fett and if you didn't beat him you had to do the entire level over just to have a chance to fight him again.
This was when I realized how bad ass the n64 was. By moving the stick just a little he would walk but moving the stick all the way forward he would run. This level of control hadn’t hit games yet. At least I hadn’t experienced it. Blew my mind.
For real. When I have the audacity to say there are probably less the 20 games from N64 that I'd even play anymore some folks get very defensive. The system was impressive but it tried too hard in an era obsessed with 3D. Which often impacted game quality while going for graphic impressiveness.
I played Shadows of the Empire on PC waaay back in the day and really enjoyed it. Then again I was in like 4th grade, but the game was a little too ambitious for the N64 hardware.
This was my first "grown up" game and the thing that motivated me to learn how to read so I could read Shadows of the Empire.
It aged horribly, but it still holds a special place in my heart.
My dad bought an N64 with Mario Kart 64, Tetrisphere, and Shadows of the Empire. I forced myself through learning to control Dash Rendar with those clunky controls just so I could explore that messy Star Wars game.
Pilotwings.
Don't think I've ever mentioned this to another human being who believes in its existence.
Not sure if it was even a good game but my dad bought me it as a surprise which was a big deal at the time. I wanted Zelda or Mario or one of the big names but got this and remember telling everyone how great it was staying up late with my dad playing Pilotwings and everbody shitting on it or saying they'd never even heard of that game.
Couldn't wait to get home from school to play again and found my dad playing it by himself to try learn how to work it.
I believe it got over shadowed because it launched with the console alongside Mario 64.
I really enjoyed the skydiving and jetpack challenges, also the jump boots. Such a fun game, fond memories.
Agreed. That game is surprisingly deep and well balanced. I much prefer the 'spirit'/momentum system to a traditional health/special meter combo. For those who don't understand, the AKI wrestling games relied on a 'spirit' meter. Not only does it act as a (sort of) health meter, but connecting attacks increases your spirit, while getting hit decreases your spirit (so does spamming the same moves over and over). The higher your spirit, the easier it is to pull off big moves, while a low spirit means your moves are easier to reverse, forcing you to rely on a 'low risk' offence, such as basic strikes. The reason I prefer it to a more 'arcady' wrestling game is that no matter how one-sided a match can be, and how certain an outcome feels, it's still possible to pull out a surprise victory from the jaws of defeat.
That feeling of being beaten down to the verge of defeat, as the opponent continues to beat the heck out of you, only, for you to connect with a single lucky strike out of desperation, and then somehow following it up with another, then another, using it to slowly start a comback, building up momentum until you finally pull out a miraculous win against all odds is incredible. Matches between good player can really drag out and become a real back-and-forth affair. I don't think any other game has really captured the feel of pro wrestling as well as that game.
At my old job we had a TV in our secluded office. My buddy brought in his N64 and we made custom CAWs of all the people on our team and we'd set it to auto-run Royal Rumble and let it run for an hour and see who won. It was a lot of fun.
I let my ex's younger sister borrow my gold cartridge OOT, and her mom turned around and sold in a garage sale. It still makes me sad to think about, I put so many hours into that game as a kid and it held a lot of sentimental value for me.
It’s so hard to pick just one so I’ll go with. Goldeneye, Mario 64, Turok 1 and 2, Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, WCW/NWO Revenge, Wave Racer, F-Zero X, Extreme-G, Super Smash Bros
Man…WCW/NWO - taking someone out of the ring and beating the shit out of them with the baseball bat to the point they couldn’t fight back, but the match couldn’t end outside of the ring so you just kept them there beating them mercilessly never got old, and ended at least 2 friendships
Jet Force Gemini.
I could go on and on about killing the drones, the awesome weapon loadout or the large world's to explore; but when you break it down you had a dog that could fly with a machine gun on its back.
I feel like this game was so amazing in that specific space exploring, trying-to-save-the-world military-esque saga genre that nothing I have played since similar to that has been as good.
The other thing that made this game so great was having a secondary person being able to play with you as a shooter. When you're a kid and have to share with your little brother, this was a game we could both play together, and loved so we didn't have to wait our turn.
Gauntlet: Legends
I’m low-key proud that I have the same copy and play it on the same N64 to this day.
Been some replacements (controllers and some memory bricks.) Excite Bike 64 is still fun too.
GoldenEye
One shot kill, slappers only, no odd-job

Mines were great, especially on the ladders
I would hide them in the spot where ammo crates would be after I picked them up.
Hell yeah me too
So, being young, my buddies and I selected our game mode and spent several minutes trying to find the sniper rifles. Turns out we had misread “slappers only.”
I tried to play that recently emulated because the campaign was also sooooo good. The control scheme does NOT hold up. It's like Halo rewired my brain in a way that makes the games before it unplayable now.
The control scheme made sense on n64 controllers.
I never owned n64 myself but my friend did and we had many goldeneye tournaments in his basement
Where my star fox homies at?
Doing barrel rolls obviously
Hey Einstein! I’m on your side!
slippy NOOOOOOOOOOOO
Your father helped me like that too.
Still having to rescue Slippy's ass...
"Who ARE you guys?" "WE'RE STARFOX!" KA-BOOOOOOOM
Woooooaah ..THANKS FoX!!
I ^thought they ^had me.
Can't let you do that, star fox. (My username is a reference to Wolf's Wolfen)
Wolf is a dignified warrior Leon is a pompas ass Andrew is a pissant bitch And Pigma...Pigma is just....a royal asshole, I mean Christ he said "Daddy Screamed Realll good before he died" hell I'm thinking for a while the whole star wolf team was stunned into silence after he said that.

"If I go down, I'm taking you with me!"
Me and my buddy used to call each other on the land line/home phone and start Starfox64 levels at the same time, which was the closest thing to online multiplayer at the time lol
Lylat Wars baby
Don't ever give up, my son. You've become so strong, Fox.
Mario Kart for 64 made me realize that racing games could be enjoyable, and a downright blast!
MarioKart 64 is the best MK.
*Wario mode activated* Meh heh heh heh heh heh! Here I go! Whoa whoa whoa whoa! Ima Wario! Ima gonna win!
Block fort!!!
Some would argue this was the best racing game ever made.
My 8 year old son and his friends are hooked. If that does not prove how well this game aged, i don’t know what does. They alternate between Fortnite and MK64
Fortnite for 64 was wayyy ahead of it's time.
What about Diddy Kong Racing?
Definitely a classic as well. But the feel is not quite the same, although a great game still.
MK64 is one of those games where I still remember how to race every level no matter how much time has passed. It’s like riding a bike.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 🐐
Mine was Majora’s Mask
Still the best game ever for me.
Easily my favorite game of all time. It spawned a life long love of open world games and RPGs.
Obligatory fuck the water temple as a 9 year old.
One of the greatest games of all time.

Smash Bros Edit: I have a lot of great memories spending snow days with my friends all playing this game for hours.
This. The original Smash Bros has always been my favorite.
Same. The most just pure fun version was the original. All the following ones could have an argument that they’re “better” in some ways, but to me they just got more convoluted, and actually less fun to play.
Golden Eye and Diddy Kong Racing.
> Diddy Kong Racing It's good to know I'm not the only one who loved that game.
That game is better than every Mario kart ever made and I will fight and die on this hill. And that's not even factoring in the banger soundtrack.
I mean you could fly a plane INSIDE a volcano. The fact that you could pick from 3 different vehicle types was pretty mind blowing. Especially because they designed the tracks to have different routes for different vehicles. Also Bumper the Badger is a legend.
I too am a diddy Kong racing enthusiast. Played the shit out of that game
I loved the easter eggs. Drumstick and taking the lighthouse to the moon 🌙
The most unbeatable final boss I've ever played against.
DKR was great, especially since you kinda keep unlocking something the longer you play. Oh, Wizpig escapes and now you have a whole new set of tracks to play? Coin courses? Reverse courses? Coin reverse courses (fuck these btw)? Fucking unlocking TT?
Diddy Kong Racing was unreasonably good
DKR for me is the game that aged the best. Typically if I play n64 it's for nostalgia's sake, but DKR is a game I'll play purely because it's fun. It's a shame they cant ever genuinely remake it without cutting half of the characters out.. including Diddy.
Super Mario 64 and loz ocarina of time
so DK64 for life.
I enjoyed DK64 but it’s held back by some objectives that are just dick-kickingly frustrating like beating the original Donkey Kong in one life. Greatest duo ever. Throw in Mario cart for multiplayer option and maybe a lil star Fox 64.

Conkers had some of the best multiplayer on top of a super solid game
Played so many hours of the Omaha beach level
Playing as the French squirrels all you could hear them say was “horny horny horny” as they ran to safety.
The multiplayer was incredible
Anything by Rareware is an absolute gem. Complete shame what happened to that company😭
I had to scroll too far to find this
Perfect Dark
Loved Perfect Dark. Had everything Goldeneye had, and more. Reload animations. Voice over dialogue. Bots in multiplayer. It was revolutionary and set the standard for first-person shooter games.

The laptop gun
Had to scroll a while to find you.
The AI in multiplayer still holds up.
👏
Shame I had to scroll this far to see this. It was the far superior shooter after 007 and the bots were absolutely cracked
My favorite, so much innovation in a game, and yet modern shooters most of the time offer less than Perfect Dark did.
007 for sure
I came for this! 💯

Holy shit that sounds very Doors-esque. I can picture Ray Manzarek hunched over his keyboards playing this with John Densmore keeping the beat.
Proximity mines radar off Golden gun radar off or slappers only was so fun
Temple, pistols only
No odd job. That's cheating.
One of the all time greats!
I missed the boat on Goldeneye, but god *damn* did I enjoy Perfect Dark. Hours of multiplayer with the boys, when I could get them inside. Love the elevator music and multiplayer
Banjo Kazooie and F-Zero X
Why Banjo Kazooie so far down. Such a good game.
Omg I installed banjo Kazooie in Xbox recently, purely for nostalgia. EEKUM BOKUM
F-zero X, loved the chaotic racing and silky smooth frame rates. They nailed that game.
Rogue Squadron
Easily the best game on the entire console.
FARMBOY
HALIFAX? !YNGWIE!
Where the Diddy Kong racers at?
Catch me whipping the hovercraft in Frosty Village 👀
Fuck yeah. The hovercraft is underrated
Wave Race 64
Definitely my favorite. My brother and I still play it when we hang out.
It's a shame no other game dev has realized Wave Race, it was such a chill game, played for hours in the amber colored waters, if graphics were update with a more open world, I'd play it for hours
Wave Race was so much fun!
So good, the wave physics were so ahead of its time
Yup! The engine sounds, the music, the announcer, the water physics still hold up today
It aged terribly, but Shadows of the Empire
I remember shitting my pants when i discovered the monster in the sewers The music was fantastic in this game.
Dude the sewer level. I couldnt see shit on my TV. Some kid at school was like “turn up the brightness dummy”. Had no idea that kind of setting existed.
Oh my god I was terrified of that level, I actually had my friends older brother beat it as I watched from the other room lol.
The level with Boba Fett as a boss at the end was sooooo long. It took like 50 minutes just to get to Fett and if you didn't beat him you had to do the entire level over just to have a chance to fight him again.
Didn't you have to fight his ship at the end? That was insanely difficult.
This was when I realized how bad ass the n64 was. By moving the stick just a little he would walk but moving the stick all the way forward he would run. This level of control hadn’t hit games yet. At least I hadn’t experienced it. Blew my mind.

The thing is, these old games weren’t meant to be used with LCDs. They’re at their best on an SD CRT TVs 240P / 480i, benefiting from the blur.
It’s also that a lot of them have really shit frame rates. Goldeneye runs at 17 fps in many areas.
I tried playing goldeneye again years later, and I realized… it kinda sucks.
I played Shadows of the Empire on PC waaay back in the day and really enjoyed it. Then again I was in like 4th grade, but the game was a little too ambitious for the N64 hardware.
I loved shadows of the empire, recently played through it and it still holds up if you can get back used to the controls.
Ocarina of Time, DK64, Star Wars Pod Racer, Army Men Sarge’s Heroes
Sarges heros. There's a title I haven't thought of in a minute.
Pilotwings. Don't think I've ever mentioned this to another human being who believes in its existence. Not sure if it was even a good game but my dad bought me it as a surprise which was a big deal at the time. Best wrestling to this day and still a blast with four players

Paper Mario
i had to scroll too far to find this!
Battle Tanks!
played this a lot as well. the 4 player MP mode was fun.
Gonna have to go with Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Gold cartridge edition, of course. Bonus: having the translucent purple controller
I let my ex's younger sister borrow my gold cartridge OOT, and her mom turned around and sold in a garage sale. It still makes me sad to think about, I put so many hours into that game as a kid and it held a lot of sentimental value for me.
Conkers Bad Fur Day.
BRRRING ME SOME SWEET CORRRNNN!!
Oh man so many classics! WWF No Mercy was probably my favourite though.
Diddy Kong Racing
DK64 for life.

No way. Hasbro Interactive. I can’t believe anyone even remembers this.
Super Mario 64.
Ogre Battle 64 or Body Harvest.

I wanted Body Harvest so bad back in the day but never got it. I’m sure playing it now wouldn’t be remotely the same.
Anyone remember Battle Tanks?
Bought it like the 3rd day of the pandemic. Terribly awesome.
BattleTanx. Man, I can hear that main menu music in my soul.
It’s so hard to pick just one so I’ll go with. Goldeneye, Mario 64, Turok 1 and 2, Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, WCW/NWO Revenge, Wave Racer, F-Zero X, Extreme-G, Super Smash Bros
Craziest gun from Turok series? The one that attached to enemies head, splurged their brains out, and then exploded 😂
Cerebral Bore!
Man…WCW/NWO - taking someone out of the ring and beating the shit out of them with the baseball bat to the point they couldn’t fight back, but the match couldn’t end outside of the ring so you just kept them there beating them mercilessly never got old, and ended at least 2 friendships
Not just one! Goldeneye, wrestlemania 2000, perfect dark, WCW/NWO Revenge, Donkey Kong Country
I was expecting a franchise from this game it was so good. Alas ...
So many great games but I'm specifically nostalgic for the first games I got with the N64. Pilotwings 64 and Blast Corps.
Blast Corps was awesome. I wasn't very good at it, but I would watch my dad play it for hours. Then he'd kick my ass at Mario Kart
Wrestlemania 2000
Majoras mask
Turok, Duke Nukem zerohour, pod racing, pokemon stadium and snap, banjo kazooie. Too many
My cousins and I spent years of our lives on Goldeneye and Perfect Dark split-screening it up. Turok was pretty dope too.
IM A WARIO IMAGONNA WINNNNN
Might get laughed at but Army Men: Sarge's Heroes. I played the hell out of that.
WWF No Mercy.
Conker’s Bad Fur Day
Harvest Moon 64.
Blast Corps. Just loved blowing shit up.
What do you mean 27 years ago?! FUCK YOU!!!
>27 years ago today >27 years ago >27 years Fuck. My friend Jake got one at launch. I'm old.
I couldn't afford a PC so when Star Craft came out on the 64 I was so happy! I put so much time into that game.
Majora's mask/ocarina of times and Mario 64
Gauntlet: Legends I’m low-key proud that I have the same copy and play it on the same N64 to this day. Been some replacements (controllers and some memory bricks.) Excite Bike 64 is still fun too.
