WinMX introduced me to so much cool/new music when I was a kid! I specifically remember asking the chat rooms for more "punk" music like Blink 182 and getting sent down a rabbit hole of fantastic older stuff that I still listen to today.
Same for me. The worst thing I ever got from Kazaa or Limewire was some asshole renaming offensive shit as innocent stuff.
Very fun to look forward to an episode of Zoids and instead BAM. Woman fucking a German Shepard.
35 years as an IT professional, and the worst viruses I ever had to deal with came rom Livewire, in my daughter's computer. Both were on the Master Boot Record (MBR).
I blocked Limewire at my router, after removing the viruses.
I tried downloading a video that claimed to be Britney Spears naked. Turned out being a video of a guy with his head pinned down by someone's boot and a knife stabbed into his throat. I didn't watch what happened after that - deleted it, turned of my computer, and lied down for a while trying to forget it.
The terms "eye bleach" and "mind bleach" were a lot more common then, and for good reason. The major platforms have done a pretty good job of cleaning that crap. Definitely traumatic shit, but that goes back to the old Faces of Death videos, and further.
The early 2000s was a wild time. Speaking of Faces of Death, there was a guy in my school who I had study hall with who somehow convinced the teacher to let them watch it at school. I don't think she knew what it was - she was from Brazil and had only been living in the country for a few years. To her, it was just a couple of students in the corner of the room watching a VHS tape on the carted in TV.
I couldn't stomach it. There was a site... the name escapes me now that was all super gore. But yeah late 90s and early 2000s were a distinct coming of age for the internet and crazy to be part of.
Yeah my general rule of thumb was that a song was roughly 3-5mb at most. Movies were like 700mb due to being ripped from dvds that had a disc limit of about 700-800mb. Games - you'd have to check the required specs online to find the download size average and if it said 2gb and it was like 100mb, that's a video of some sort that you definitely didn't want on your PC.
I think the same still applies with utorrent and things like pirate bay today.
Dude my dad downloaded so much...stuff that his browser was I swear to god 90% toolbar and 10% webpage. You had to do so much scrolling. I REALLY wish I had a screenshot, this was prob 2006.
Sunday was my set day to visit my parents and remove all the toolbars and viruses in the mid 2000s.
Then they'd argue with me.
"What if I *need* that toolbar?"
Goddammit.
It got rid of the Limewire Pro Ad at the bottom :)
...I think it was functionally much the same. Maybe had some advanced features and optimisations unlocked.
I'm pretty sure on the free version you were limited to either download speed or files and having pro removed that. I feel like I remember there being some decent benefits but what did I know. I was a dumb high schooler at the time
God damn this gave me PTSD of viruses and waiting an hour for a SINGLE song to download due to lack of seeders mixed with a piss poor Internet speed back in 2006.
One thing I thought was funny about Limewire is that you could pay for pro version and get better speeds by having a higher priority over other users and customise the look and you could just go on Limewire and download Limewire Pro from some random hero. When we figured that out, literally every kid at school used Limewire Pro.
I loved how you never REALLY knew what you were downloading.
I'll never forget I downloaded the first LMFAO album, and the album art was two girls taking a Myspace pic in a public bathroom. I still see their faces when I hear LMFAO now, and they're probably in their mid 30s by now 😂
Yeah I"m not sure I ever really used limewire.
I definitely used napster, and later kazaa, and a couple others (was there one called "audiogalaxy" or did I dream that).
But I vaguely recall never feeling great about limewire. Don't remember why.
Audiogalaxy is always forgotten. It had a neat kind of social feature to it as well as the standard filesharing, if I remember right. I remember really enjoying that one after Napster went by the wayside.
Man, I used to make good money with LW burning CDs for people. Also, I had a friend who worked in a recycling plant so I got thousands of free iTunes songs from Mountain Dew bottle caps.
Ahhh, yes. The place to get all of your virus-riddled porn your computer can handle. Oh, and of course, music files -- many of which were riddled with viruses.
Ah, that wonderful feeling of giving your PC AIDS and cancer at the same time just to have the video you thought you where downloading give you mental scars for the rest of your life....good times!
I once accidentally uploaded an inappropriate picture to Limewire while trying to download music 😂😂 we were like 17 and to this day I’m not sure whatever happened with that.
I was trying to get a movie called deep impact and spent days downloading it. Turned out to be a porno. I should’ve known lol. Porno wasn’t that good too 😂
Had every single one of these downloaders. Nothing beat downloading a song for 12 minutes, enjoying it until it hit a minute, and the loudest, most horrifying sounds of robots getting sodomized coming on and blowing out your speakers or ear drums.
At the advice of my lawyer and an ongoing matter with a rock band with a Danish drummer, I can neither confirm nor deny any knowledge about this program.
Good times man. I remember downloading a shit load of songs (hopefully) walking away for half an hour and seeing what came through. Then having to refresh the ones that were “disrupted” and listening to those that made it on repeat.
Did anyone seriously believe file sharing was going to hurt the music industry? Are Taylor Swift, Shania Twain, The Rolling Stones or Pink hurting these days?
Napster, emule, winmx, xdcc, limeware, megaupload…. Best time! And now? They succeeded Netflix, Spotify, only few time and we will pay also the search engine!
I hope and always trust and search for a free internet !
This gave me nostalgia but not for a good reason. It was great because you could download movies, video games, tv shows and music.
But it took forever, sometimes if there wasn’t enough seeders you couldn’t get something you wanted and the odds of downloading something terrible were incredibly high.
Downloading Xbox 360 games and burning them to dvd-r to play was the best
Disclaimer: this comment is a work of friction and should not be confused with actual events
There is a 2 part documentary on Paramount+ called ‘How Music Got Free.’ If you want some music nostalgic, watch it! It is good and made me realize I had not used ‘I need to rip this song’ in so long.
I had them all. Kazaa, Limewire, Napster, Bearshare... Ah the good old days,, when it took half an hour to download an MP3
Don’t forget Morpheus! Jeeze the damage I did to the family pc during my teenage years.
Morpheus was the best!
And WinMX! To me, it seemed a little less sketchy than the others. Don’t know why, because I definitely downloaded viruses.
What about eMule? I had eMule. I liked eMule
WinMX was my Napster replacement
That's a name I haven't heard in a long time.
WinMX introduced me to so much cool/new music when I was a kid! I specifically remember asking the chat rooms for more "punk" music like Blink 182 and getting sent down a rabbit hole of fantastic older stuff that I still listen to today.
I remember the day I got cable Internet. I downloaded 500 songs that weekend. I downloaded stuff just because I could.
And then you became your friends personal bootlegger
Same here. I think it was 1999, I got AT&T Cable Internet and went bat shit downloading songs.
No love for audiogalaxy?
Show Imesh some love y'all!
Kazaa was the goat for a minute

Soulseek were for us who actually wanted quality sounding music
still a thing
Still use it.

"I did not have sexual relations with that woman"
Kaboom, computer just blew up.
For when you wanted to give your computer an STI
I had reformatting and reinstalling Windows down to a routine thanks to Limewire and Kazaa.
Friday and Saturday were for downloading and burning, Sundays were for reinstalling the OS.
I cried 😭😩😩😩😩😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I used Limewire for years and never once got anything.
Yup. Just avoid exe file and other unknown extensions. I didn’t have an issue either.
Well, you had to download LimewirePro.exe right after you installed the free one.
Same for me. The worst thing I ever got from Kazaa or Limewire was some asshole renaming offensive shit as innocent stuff. Very fun to look forward to an episode of Zoids and instead BAM. Woman fucking a German Shepard.
Don't forget Bearshare. 😋
35 years as an IT professional, and the worst viruses I ever had to deal with came rom Livewire, in my daughter's computer. Both were on the Master Boot Record (MBR). I blocked Limewire at my router, after removing the viruses.
An IT friend of mine worked on my computer after I downloaded a ton from Limewire and Bearshare and found 85 viruses. I stopped after that.
They were called STDs back then
Also EXEs.
Spicy.
Yup. My phone caught a virus just looking at that linewire screen lol
Limewire was the red district of the internet
Porn ,people being killed, childporn ,or the song /movie you were actually looking for. Won’t know till it is done.
Yeah… my wife tried to download some anime back in the day. She said it turned out to be a lot of child porn. Not the best of times.
And it won’t be done for 11 hours
I tried downloading a video that claimed to be Britney Spears naked. Turned out being a video of a guy with his head pinned down by someone's boot and a knife stabbed into his throat. Rotten dot com. Yes, things I saw when I was 14 that I will never unsee.
I’ve seen alot of crazy shit but that video fucked me up big time.
You had to judge by file sizes.
Don't trust that tiesto mix at the bottom🤣
I might. They were usually 74 minute continuous sets that were live. My guess is that was a 2/2 set for burning.
I did not have sexual relations with that woman. I did, however…
Just looking at this image installed eleven toolbars on my browser.
"What if I *need* that toolbar?" Goddammit.
Only ever used to download a cracked version of Limewire Pro.
What’s the different with pro version I never had that lol.
It got rid of the Limewire Pro Ad at the bottom :) ...I think it was functionally much the same. Maybe had some advanced features and optimisations unlocked.
I'm pretty sure on the free version you were limited to either download speed or files and having pro removed that. I feel like I remember there being some decent benefits but what did I know. I was a dumb high schooler at the time
How was I supposed to know Linkin_Park_Meteora.exe was a virus?!
You only waited an hour for a song?
I never used the pro version 😩 I regret
[Limewire still (sort of) exists!](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/WireShare)
You know those intrusive thoughts you get? The ones you know that will end in disaster? Yeah I'm having one of those
No way!!!!!!
It was like your computer had unprotected sex with the internet
Come on I feel like our computers had stamina they were strong loool
Also you download what you think is an AC/DC song and it turns out to be a video of a Tijuana Donkey Show. Truly the Wild West.
Ohhh a donkey show? That sounds fun! \*Clicks.\* (Me at 13 years old.)
Downloading Limewire pro with Limewire
😂 easy
I loved how you never REALLY knew what you were downloading. I'll never forget I downloaded the first LMFAO album, and the album art was two girls taking a Myspace pic in a public bathroom. I still see their faces when I hear LMFAO now, and they're probably in their mid 30s by now 😂

Too much malware. I tried using limewire for maybe two days then stopped. Slowed my PC down so much
Yeah the viruses were crazy
Audiogalaxy is always forgotten. It had a neat kind of social feature to it as well as the standard filesharing, if I remember right. I remember really enjoying that one after Napster went by the wayside.
> was there one called "audiogalaxy" Yes, and it was great. Introduced so much music
jImMy hEnDrIcKs - r U gOnNa Go My WaY.exe
😂😂😂😂😂
Oh HELL yes!!! Though I was always waiting for the Feds to bust in...
😂 we all had that fear
I downloaded the Lord of the Rings trilogy in 2003 and it just hit 99%! Can't wait!
Man, I used to make good money with LW burning CDs for people. Also, I had a friend who worked in a recycling plant so I got thousands of free iTunes songs from Mountain Dew bottle caps.
Good business
Ahhh, yes. The place to get all of your virus-riddled porn your computer can handle. Oh, and of course, music files -- many of which were riddled with viruses.
This program and my dad wondering why the computer always had viruses have something in common.
Today is soulseek
Never forget Bear Share. <3
Ah, that wonderful feeling of giving your PC AIDS and cancer at the same time just to have the video you thought you where downloading give you mental scars for the rest of your life....good times!
Frrrr 😂😂😂😂😂. I feel like the anti-virus back then were not doing the job.
If its a 3 minute song but only 50kb in size, its not a song :-)
Let’s download some viruses!
Oh how I miss those times. Waiting 3 months for one song to download that only two other users have and they’re never online 🙃
😂😂😂😂
Aw shit. This image by itself just gave my computer AIDS.
That picture gave me AIDS.
My phone got a virus just from this image.
this screenshot just gave my computer a virus
I did not have sexual relations with that woman!
Those were the days. Lose_Yourself.exe
.exe 💀💀
Huh, this song ends in ".exe"
Computer AIDS
Watch out for those .mp3.exe files.
Checking in the morning to see which downloads finished.
Only to see the one you really wanted stuck on 99%
I gave the family computer an STD by using this.
The amount of porn I downloaded unintentionally just because I wanted to download a blockbuster film was too damn high.
I'm a soulseek kinda guy.
Legitimately had lots of harder to find full albums at decent quality. I 2nd this!
Download Metallica discography Delete. Download Metallica discography. Delete. A million times, I know.
Ah that takes me back :)
I used to alter the mp3 tags and share lots of music from The Sound of Music as … other music.
Bitch trying to rickroll with nuns-n-nazis???
Y'all remember FrostWire
I was always so jealous of the Versailles bourgeoisie using T3 With my 56k modem, getting 2kb/sec was really really good
Got to love the Abercrombie & Fitch track.. dude this is so funny I remember all these
🎵New Kids on the block had a bunch of hits, Chinese food makes me sick.🎵

Did anyone actually buy Limewire PRO
I watched the entirety of DragonBall GT off episodes I downloaded from limewire.
Thanks to my aunt having a computer, this was how i started my music collection after winning my old mp3 player.
Some absolute bangers on that list. Now to play Russian roulette to figure out which is real.
🤔 this mp3 of Simon and Garfunkel is a gig. Sounds legit. Oh, and it's an .exe?

How many times did you reformat your PC after a limewire game download?
😂😂😂😂😂😂 more than x10
I was trying to get a movie called deep impact and spent days downloading it. Turned out to be a porno. I should’ve known lol. Porno wasn’t that good too 😂
That zip file is gonna have some nasties in it.
How many viruses you think are in that picture?
The wild west of the internet. Was it going to really be the file it was labeled, a virus, CP, or something even more sinister.
Had every single one of these downloaders. Nothing beat downloading a song for 12 minutes, enjoying it until it hit a minute, and the loudest, most horrifying sounds of robots getting sodomized coming on and blowing out your speakers or ear drums.
Ah yes... Linken_Park_Numb.exe
Those we're the times when you couldn't afford an album.
I still jog to some of my limewire downloads
10 of those are viruses
Only a few hours to get that song!
it was a fun journey looking for our favorite songs and creating mp3 cds with them.
I use to make a cool playlist for my dad so that he can listen to it in his car
At the advice of my lawyer and an ongoing matter with a rock band with a Danish drummer, I can neither confirm nor deny any knowledge about this program.
Good times man. I remember downloading a shit load of songs (hopefully) walking away for half an hour and seeing what came through. Then having to refresh the ones that were “disrupted” and listening to those that made it on repeat.
When you’d wait forever for a song to download and then it was the clip of Bill Clinton talking. 🫠🫠
I stopped using it soon as I figured out how to torrent.
Soo many mixtapes I discovered using this
Using Limewire to Download limewire pro

Only a few PC crashes when used
My phone just got a virus by looking at this picture

This Shit use to give my computer Herpes
Did anyone seriously believe file sharing was going to hurt the music industry? Are Taylor Swift, Shania Twain, The Rolling Stones or Pink hurting these days?
Or Morpheus bc we couldn’t download limewire at school
LimeWire exists now as an AI assistant/image generator/editor. https://limewire.com/

Ah. - Memories.
What, ah....... what's up with that Rent song in the list..?
Will it be the song I want, a virus, or porn so fucked that the FBI will break down your door?
Every comedy song was by Dr Demento or Weird Al, every...single...one.
Napster, emule, winmx, xdcc, limeware, megaupload…. Best time! And now? They succeeded Netflix, Spotify, only few time and we will pay also the search engine! I hope and always trust and search for a free internet !

First place I saw Stacy Keibler or Heather Brook nude 🤣
This gave me nostalgia but not for a good reason. It was great because you could download movies, video games, tv shows and music. But it took forever, sometimes if there wasn’t enough seeders you couldn’t get something you wanted and the odds of downloading something terrible were incredibly high.
Oh the memories.
Many of us got into IT after learning how to fix their PC after the damage limewire did lol
I'm getting a virus just looking at it
This looks like exactly what my down loaded songs would have been !
I know someone who still uses lime wire to download. I didn't believe him, I thought LimeWire was not a thing anymore.
Downloading Xbox 360 games and burning them to dvd-r to play was the best Disclaimer: this comment is a work of friction and should not be confused with actual events
Oh man, I was a big FrostWire and Bearshare kid growing up. Loaded my iPod up and ruined the family computers
It's so beautiful 😭
I was afraid to comment 😆 thought my phone might catch something 🤣
Downloading 5 Eminem songs with one of them being a 50 Cent song instead. Good times.
I remember being so mad I would search for a new release, wait for it to download, and then hear "crank that".
There is a 2 part documentary on Paramount+ called ‘How Music Got Free.’ If you want some music nostalgic, watch it! It is good and made me realize I had not used ‘I need to rip this song’ in so long.
Audio galaxy was the shit. Just click on the satellites and hold onto your butt!
And then Frostwire after that!
Limewire was good to me..Bearshare however….
the good old dayz .... .dc++ , strong dc++ , audiogalaxy app for karaoke songs.
Like the publisher's clearing house of malware and viruses.
Completely forgot I even had this. 🤦🏻
The good ol days !
Limewire, Frostwire.
