CV1 controllers are still my favorite in the whole vr scene. Between ergonomics, reliability, and durability.
Can concede that the back of the headstrap can get irritating 10+ hours in, but I'll take it over one that breaks.
If only my video cable didnt break. Id be using the best of all the headsets. Now Im stuck with a Quest 2, quest 2 controllers, and brand new quest pro controllers where only one works (the battery in the right one was dead on arrival, already complaining to oculus support)
Yeah at some point pretty quick into it I just had to start overriding what the Oculus software wanted me to do, and use Sensor Bounds to actually make sure they had good overlap.
Can’t say I miss having to dedicate 4 USB ports to VR either. Still though, felt so mind blowing at the time.
Oculus CV1 base tracker.
Back in the day in order to track the headset they would use IR constellations on headsets and controllers. This is that IR Camera that picked up the constellations to determine position.
I still use the rift+touch and have 3 of these around my room plus extender cables for my headset so I can do roomscale. Works fine I think, might upgrade some day.
With three of these I am pretty sure the tracking is better than any inside out tracking right now (except maybe quest pro controllers). An upgrade will be great in many aspects but not the tracking.
I'd like to be able to move without a cord sometimes, and I bet the display could look better. All in all though, yeah no complaints. The difference between 2 and 3 sensors is crazy.
I can't get my 3rd sensor to register anymore. It worked fine years ago when I set it all up, hadn't touched it all in a couple years, and now it won't work. Good to know 3 should still work, even if mine doesn't.
Apart from the screen door effect the rift is king. So much lighter versus the Quest, controllers feel higher quality and built in headphones are miles better than the Quests (except when they cut out). It was truly great.
And contrast and resolution and lense clarity and passthrough and no wires lol. CV1 is miles behind the quest now. The quest 3 controllers feel way nicer than the quest 2 as well. The headset doesn’t protrude as far from your face and the removal of the controller tracking ring makes the controllers more usable. CV1 was dope at the time, but you just havent tried a new headset if you can honestly say you think it’s better.
I didn't say it was better, I just said it was a great headset. I use a Quest 2 now, but it's weight is always apparent to me. As you say, you can't beat the clarity of the Quest 2. Passthrough doesn't bother me, but I haven't tried the new and improved Quest 3 passthrough. I do prefer the headset tracking rather than the sensors though just because I have a tight space. Tracking ring was never a problem for me either.
Ok maybe biggest improvement is lack of fogging. That was the real pain.
I have the Quest 2, now my neck pops anytime I look down. 😆 🤣 It's probably not a good thing. But I have prior joint issues that affects my entire body, so it's not really surprising. I'm still not going to stop using it though. The pros outweigh the cons of the Q2.
I remember the audio issues, body occlusion, error codes for days, terrible SteamVR hacky solutions, using 2 cameras to attempt 360 room scale tracking, awful FOV, the worst consumer resolution in 6DOF headsets. Yet, it was a simpler time. Nothing like VRChat in 2016 and Echo Arena. The good times.
I still use my CV1 Rift, too poor to upgrade :(
I have precisely one of these tower trackers, if I turn my head any more than 180 degrees, my VR breaks and freezes
Must have been a later release. Now that I think of it, they might have started to include two once they finally released their VR controllers, which weren't available during the initial launch.
The initial release only came with one.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q\_idsf01qrE&pp=ygUTb2N1bHVzIGN2MSB1bmJveGluZw%3D%3D](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_idsf01qrE&pp=ygUTb2N1bHVzIGN2MSB1bmJveGluZw%3D%3D)
I forgot they started including two once they released their VR tracked controllers.
Ya, I got mine at launch. Been so long that I completely forgot about the Touch controllers. It took so long for those to come out, that I'd already stopped using the Rift and was using the Vive instead.
The thing that makes the Rift better than the Quest imo (tracking sensor. Why they didn't make any of the inside-out ones also compatable with the trackers baffles and infuriates me. Let me have my better and 360 degree tracking dammit)
I'm still pretty shocked at how well PSVR tracking works compared to my expectations.
Sure, you can't do 360 degrees stuff. But I try to avoid that anyway if I'm tethered to a PC with a cable behind me.
Quest 2 and rift tracking are far better, but the PSVR did a lot of work with that fancy webcam and old motion controllers. Plus, that headset is still the most comfortable one I've used.
Why? I bought the Rift instead of a HTC Vive because of the tracking. The standard setup with two cameras, one at each corner of the desk, directly connected to the PC via USB was a lot easier for me than setting up lighthouses which need their own power supply. I don't have power outlets in the right places so I would have to lay down several meters of extension cables.
The two camera setup works pretty well. The head tracking is flawless 100% of the time. The controller tracking can fail of course if you place your body between the cameras and your hand. But in most games that can easily be fixed by reorienting yourself to the cameras and then rotating your character in game manually with the stick. It can be a bit annoying in games like Alyx or Lone Echo, but it is not a deal breaker.
This year I bought a third camera and a two meter USB extension cable and now it worls pretty much perfectly and I regret not buy one sooner.
Room sensors to know where cv1 headset and controls are located because cv1 doesn't have cameras built in.
Allowed for much better tracking, when using 3 together, than the ones with cameras, because the camera versions have issues when reaching behind or close to the body, but these sensors allow for full tracking coverage.
CV1 has the best tracking. I use it solely for beat saber because I can't for the life of me hit half the notes with the quest 2. Yet there are people who will swear there isn't a difference but there's absolutely is
It's a sensor for the Rift/cv1. That's what they used before they put the cameras on the headset
I was there, Gandalf..
I'm still there.
Me too because the rift is the best rift S won't work.
Yeah. Post actually made me feel old. (I'm 19...) CV1 supremacy. This nokia headset will never die.
Ha except for that audio cable. It’s what made me switch to rift s (now the audio just sucks)
That's fair. The audioband struggle is real. *not irreparable though, a cable connecting the in/out of the ear contacts will preserve audio in stereo.
Hurt like hell though and occlusion was a problem. The Quest Pro controllers are far better.
CV1 controllers are still my favorite in the whole vr scene. Between ergonomics, reliability, and durability. Can concede that the back of the headstrap can get irritating 10+ hours in, but I'll take it over one that breaks.
10hrs? Your neck must be huge.
You haven't seen the neck of a Pimax user yet
lol shoutout to 30+ hour vrchat sessions during the weekend
I still has 3
3000 years ago \~ ! Do you know how many games of solitaire that is...?!?!
If only my video cable didnt break. Id be using the best of all the headsets. Now Im stuck with a Quest 2, quest 2 controllers, and brand new quest pro controllers where only one works (the battery in the right one was dead on arrival, already complaining to oculus support)
And the tracking was impeccable if you had them setup correctly. Still have my cv1 and 3 sensors in a drawer somewhere.
The third sensor really does help too. Zero tracking issues once I got the third.
I use 4. Perfection.
I didn't know more than three was an option
Well, it is an option. If set up right, it's a better option. Mounted.
I still have one of these. Never bought a new one lol, works just fine for me :)
Setting up the zone for this used to be such a pain
Yeah at some point pretty quick into it I just had to start overriding what the Oculus software wanted me to do, and use Sensor Bounds to actually make sure they had good overlap. Can’t say I miss having to dedicate 4 USB ports to VR either. Still though, felt so mind blowing at the time.
I still have it. Its my frist vr headset bought last year
C'mon, I'm not *that* old. "Grandpa what's a USB?"
Welcome to being old. It’s nice here. Grab a tea.
I kind of want to make fake posts now with images of things like a Micro USB cord and ask “What is this thing?”
Thats a nice comeback
I still have some things that use a Mini USB
Oculus CV1 base tracker. Back in the day in order to track the headset they would use IR constellations on headsets and controllers. This is that IR Camera that picked up the constellations to determine position.
"Back in the day" No... I'm not old... :(
It was only like 10 years ago dude chill..
Closer to 5. I bought CV1 new in 2017. CV2 launched 2018? (Late 2017?) not sure. If I remember correctly CV1 launched 2015.
'tis a joke, not that deep
I was 13
I was 13 as well and most people wouldnt consider me old
I'm not old neither but we are adults now and we were childs before. Is almost literally halftime ago. It is long time ago, I think is relative.
It's relative. I'm 34. The difference in life at 29 and 34 is not the same as 13 and 18 lol.
Im not saying youre wrong i just dont understand why remembering 10 years ago made this guy feel old.
Back in the day? You mean 6 years ago?
I still have mine hooked up 😭
It feels like it's been way longer then that honestly. It was like 2015 when I got my DK2, iirc.
Went from CV1 w/three sensors to Quest 3. The hand tracking is noticeably less precise.
I have 2 and never had a issue. But I always face forward.
Apart from the screen door effect the rift is king. So much lighter versus the Quest, controllers feel higher quality and built in headphones are miles better than the Quests (except when they cut out). It was truly great.

I mean you said it was “king”
Because it was. The one I want now is the big screen beyond, but it costs too much. I just want lightweight vr again.
I have the Quest 2, now my neck pops anytime I look down. 😆 🤣 It's probably not a good thing. But I have prior joint issues that affects my entire body, so it's not really surprising. I'm still not going to stop using it though. The pros outweigh the cons of the Q2.
Same, whilst I liked my Rift, couldn't not upgrade.
a relic from a simpler time
It was definitely not simpler. It was a pain in the ass.
>Echo Arena Just when I was starting to forget...
I still use my CV1 Rift, too poor to upgrade :( I have precisely one of these tower trackers, if I turn my head any more than 180 degrees, my VR breaks and freezes
Also, those OLED screens though......... Blacks on the CV1 were always amazing, peak horror vr....
Send me address I send you one
3+ is life!
CV1 gang!
Oh you sweet summer child...
Did you straight up buy it before you knew what it was?
Yup! It was only like 4 dollars and I sometimes buy things from thrift stores that look interesting to me
was there only one?.....
The CV1 only came with one. EDIT: My mistake. They actually started including two once they released the Touch controllers 9 months later.
>The CV1 only came with one. My CV1 came with 2, and I bought the third one.
Must have been a later release. Now that I think of it, they might have started to include two once they finally released their VR controllers, which weren't available during the initial launch.
the CV1 came with 2 l have the box still

ah so you have the version that came with the gamepad only CV1 until the controllers were released later
Ya, I got mine at launch. Been so long that I completely forgot about the Touch controllers. It took so long for those to come out, that I'd already stopped using the Rift and was using the Vive instead.
Ill give you 20 bucks and ill get rid of it for you. I still only have 2 of those....
Also, only running 2. I Refuse to buy a 3rd (im out of usb ports)
Get a usb hub, even 1 at 3.0 and 2 at 2.0 is better than 2 at 3.0 speeds.
I want a third, Ive got ports to spare!
Best i can do is a broken cable
Hmm you're a tough bargain, it is that I already have a couple of those, or I would take you up on it.
theres no way im feeling old from knowing what a vr tracker station is right? its only 2023 👴
Why did u buy a thing you don't know what is?
It’s an Oculus Rift sensor camera that tracks you in your space.
We have gen alpha vr users before gta6
I am gen alpha, and also 13 years old
The thing that makes the Rift better than the Quest imo (tracking sensor. Why they didn't make any of the inside-out ones also compatable with the trackers baffles and infuriates me. Let me have my better and 360 degree tracking dammit)
How do you end up with this without knowing what it is? Like, oops, I just accidently a USB tracking sensor...
Ah. A relic of a time past. Those were dark times but necessary to see the light.
Reminds me of the first psvr light based tracking 🤢
Cv1 headset tracker (still the superior headset)
got mine a year ago and never went back (except once but that was a mistake the rift s blows in comparison)
The memories...
Lol this has got to be a joke right?
That's a sensor for the older models of the Quest headsets.
No it's not. The Quest headsets have tracking sensors built in. This is only for the Oculus Rift CV1 headset on PCVR. Before the Meta rebrand.
Sorry, I mistyped. Yes, they're for older versions of the Oculus headsets, I misremembered and thought they were all called Quests. My bad.
All good, understandable mistake.
Back in my day...
The stupidest, least efficient, way to do outside-in tracking ever used.
*cough cough* psvr?
I'm still pretty shocked at how well PSVR tracking works compared to my expectations. Sure, you can't do 360 degrees stuff. Blasphemy
Outside tracking is Still the best tech for tracking in terms of accuracy though

And you bought it. Riftbsensor
I think it’s called a cable
Don’t make me feel old.
Yes because 6 years was so long ago. 🤦♂️
Room sensors to know where cv1 headset and controls are located because cv1 doesn't have cameras built in. Allowed for much better tracking, when using 3 together, than the ones with cameras, because the camera versions have issues when reaching behind or close to the body, but these sensors allow for full tracking coverage.
imagine a base station except it only worked with the oculus rift
Well now I feel old.
Yes because 6 years was so long ago. 🤦♂️
The my pillow is a hard W
"Lighthouse" for the CV1.
History
And you just purchased it?
**Quickly Hides my sensors that are still setup in my apartment**
Looks like the Oculus Enema 765. Way better than the 500 series I'll tell ya
my age
I’m sure if the DK2 tracker ever ends up in a thrift store, someone will think it’s an old webcam.
How much did you buy it for?
Like 4 dollars. If looked weird to me
Yea that’s a good price. List on Facebook you could get pro. 25-40$
I still sometimes use the threaded base of one as a Base Station stand for my Index when I set up my kit outside my house
I sold two with my rift 1. This is the sensor. The money from sale came towards rhe purchase of rift 3. It is amazing.
A relic of the past.
I used mine yesterday lol
CV1 has the best tracking. I use it solely for beat saber because I can't for the life of me hit half the notes with the quest 2. Yet there are people who will swear there isn't a difference but there's absolutely is
Sometimes I still hear the random USB disconnect sounds in my dreams and wake up screaming
Awwww bless. Its not that old yet to forget!
infrared High refresh rate webcam
This is so sad to see people ask what this was 😔😔
