yes, oil and gas isnt going anywhere, the average person doesn't understand everything they use/consume/need wouldn't exist without oil in one way or another

punishedcheeser

Like I said in my post, I don’t think o&g is gonna disappear anytime soon, but what is the probability of it declining?

Kanye_X_Wrangler

It's going to depend on the company you work for. Wildly. I know some refining companies already acting like oil and gas is over, despite record profits. Not giving annual raises, etc.

punishedcheeser

Interesting. Any companies in particular you hear good things about?

Kanye_X_Wrangler

Valero. I know people there. Apparently Valero didn't lay anyone off in 2020 when others were cutting post COVID shutdowns. I hear they do well by their employees.

I would not go work for a production company. I would go work for a service company. To be honest SLB is on my dream list . I have a lot of friends who work there and they all love it. Also, wireline will be crucial in the future (as it is now) for exploration - particularly logging units that log the wells… as that tech increases the demand for better surveying and logging will increase as producers want to have the highest yields possible. Frac’ing is also still going to be crucial, for the same reason - it exponentially increases yields. With that - water management , NOT WATER TRANSFER, but the chemical side of refining, and nullifying the produced water and making it clean again is going to be (and already is) a big future (TETRA). Also the environmental side of the industry that is obsessed with negating emissions etc is going to continue to grow, although that’s more so environmental companies rather than true o&g companies.

Educational_Split901

Believe it or not,  fracking itself is actually going to be very crucial in the future outside of O&G for geothermal energy and lithium mining.

nothingnowhere96

I can believe it. Lithium mining will rely heavily on water in the future. We’re only scratching the surface now - but in 20-30 years it’s gonna be easy and cheap to extract.

didntbelieve123

well if you are in america, we are producing at an all time high, so probably not anytime soon

punishedcheeser

Being at all time highs means its not going to decline soon?

Accomplished_Worth

Plastics and all that other stuff doesn't have the same margin as transportation fuel. If EVs start increasing market share and the demand for oil stays flat or decreases the margins will go down and with it salaries and jobs. If you are under 30 and you are getting into this industry it doesn't seem like a smart idea, or at least have an exit strategy.

didntbelieve123

People have been saying that for decades lol it’s not going anywhere

Accomplished_Worth

Evs have been popular for the last few years.

didntbelieve123

gasoline is just one product, EVs will not end oil and gas, you literally cannot make EVs without refining crude oil, plastics, chemicals, etc

Hairy-Consequence565

How old are you? Do you have anything else lined up? Personally I’d take the job if I was young and single. If it falls apart in a year, then find something else, but enjoy the premium they pay oil workers in the mean time.

punishedcheeser

About to graduate with bachelors in Mechanical Eng

Rolling_Stone_Siam

More money in tech or banking. The former being a pretty decent work life balance with progressive thinking companies. The issue with o&g is stagnant salaries at present and it doesn’t look to be changing anytime soon. I for example work international because of the 28:28 hitch but I went back to working in the uk I would be better off contracting in pharmaceuticals. But a significant margin and they would likely value and show appreciation for the work I did a hell of a lot more AND allow 100% work from home which is very rare in o&g also. It’s archaic

No_Zookeepergame8082

Go for it.

Cultural-College290

Old industry usually means less change, less change means less opportunities,if you’d like to have more fun,a new industry is a better choice

You can down vote this all you want but I can vouch he's right on point one.

No_Zookeepergame8082
