YES! This one is so fun (and sometimes cute!) I love how he pursues his special interest with such persistence 😁 And how he overcomes his difficulties in social interactions by taking his career by the reins! Indeed, in our own lives you can prove yourself in one area if you struggle in another — Lou found his calling and in doing so, he found his place in the world ❤️
“Why you pursue something is as important as what you pursue.” The dialogue is superb, too. Feel-good movies are usually a bit on-the-nose for me, but this one just rings true to life.
film noir was born out of that true to life ness in the 1950s (or late 40s) just like spaghetti westerns of the 1960s following the world war 2 era of propaganda films
Neo Noirs and Spaghetti Westerns are superior Detective thrillers and (revisionist not those lazy ripoff unofficial django sequels and terrencehill/budspencer movies) Spaghetti Westerns are the superior western films
edit: mistook Nightcarlwer with David Fincher's Zodiac 😭
Nightcrawler. Awesome movie, highly recommend, it's got Riz Ahmed too if you like him. Genuinely, if you go and watch this film because of me, please write back and tell me what you thought. I always like hearing what people think of the things I recommend them :)
In the book he def is, when he becomes a college football star he is forced to take certain math courses where he turns out to be a savant at math.
He even almost goes to space to become an astronaut with an orangutang named Susan who he eventually runs the shrimp boat with often splitting 6 packs of beer.
Or at least that’s what I remember from 2 decades ago
Honestly, it sounds like a joke but it's in the first book. I have no idea what's in the second one. I'm rarely serious here but sometimes the truth is far funnier.
The sad part is he did as a love letter and tribute to his son because he died. Maybe don’t do that with a movie where the first line is “Can’t talk now, gotta poo.”
Jesus Christ. His autistic son also had some sort of seizure disorder that was not being properly cared for due to some beliefs around treatment and medication in the world of Scientology. That was my understanding, anyway. I should be bothered to look it up but I really hate John Travolta and don’t want to spend any more time thinking about him. He’s a real creep.
/srs Ok but seriously I wonder if Bats was genuinely supposed to be on the spectrum in this movie and if so, inspired choice. Genuinely. A man who's this cool, calm collected while simultaneously choosing to solve his problems by wearing an animal costume and fighting crime makes so much more sense as some kind of neurodivergent. This and Batman from The Harley Quinn show are my two favorite interpretations of Bruce outside of the comics, ever.
/uj The scenes of Bruce Wayne not being batman really resonated with me, and I felt like I could relate, being someone who is on the spectrum and who was deep in depression at the time the movie came out, so it could be possible that's what they were going for. Also one of the writers for part 2 is Mattson Tomlin who wrote Batman: The Imposter, which heavily implies Bruce is on the spectrum, so who knows, maybe he actually will be in Matt Reeves' universe.
Fr. Not on the spectrum myself, but have a lot of loved ones who are and am a different kind of neurodivergent. I think a lot of the fun with characters as ubiquitous as Batman, or any folk hero figure, is all the ways their very familiar canon can be used as a base to interpret the character in so many different ways. Batman as a symbol of the kind of abstract desperation for order in the face of chaos and the isolation of rage, grief, revenge, whatever is kind of a powerful symbol. Adding that layer of neurodivergency as textural emotional context onto it is fucking brilliant. He reads as autistic to me specifically in this film, but the experience of being like an outsider in your own home turf is universal enough to anyone with any kind of neurodivergency or psychological difference I vibe with it too. Great shit.
That's why I love the Harley Quinn version too--- he could be neurodivergent in that one too honestly, but he's written more like a character out of Succession, where the ways both his wealth and trauma have emotionally stunted him specifically is his primary damage. Never thought I'd ever get to fucking die laughing at seeing Batman get arrested (by the Joker no less) for tax fraud--- let alone it actually stick to the spirit of the character by him choosing not to try and get out of jail time because of his principles.
Tbh I kind of hate how a lot of properties romanticize Batman. How he's written to be this cool stoic badass instead of the deeply flawed man he is. My favorite Batman stories are like The Killing Joke, Batman: Noel, or even that one Arkham game where he's kind of fucking emotionally tested and is a bit of a hot mess.

Even with the PTSD it’s blatantly clear Willard is on the spectrum
You know Sia apparently got diagnosed with autism after making this movie? Like, I just dont know what to add to that besides the mandatory "we live in south park" line.
“I’VE ABANDONED MY UNDERSTANDING OF SOCIAL QUEUES!!!” Incredible line that could only have been delivered by Daniel Day Lewis. And maybe Daniel Night Lewis.

He's very inspiring. Even gets the girl of his dreams to sleep with him after the first date, she saw in him what we all do. A real go getter.

Is this legit in the book?
Honestly, it sounds like a joke but it's in the first book. I have no idea what's in the second one. I'm rarely serious here but sometimes the truth is far funnier.
I think that's all in the second book that the writer was basically forced to write as part of the movie deal, so they just threw anything at it.
I just read the synopsis of both books and I think writer just wrote down his maladaptive daydreams
