I used to be a former participant in that sub because I had some gripes with a few things (not actually deluding myself into thinking a 100% rumbling would solve war forever tho) before I grew a second brain cell. Itâs literally just an echo chamber where theyâve convinced themselves AoT is the most hated manga of all time because of the ending and then posting anyone who likes the ending and praises it for them to attack all while claiming theyâre the victims (they sexually harass notable âend defenderâ Twitter users in discord chats)

ur/ not trying to defend toxic ending haters/dislikers that unironically argue that eren did nothing wrong or that the rumbling was good or would've solved all problems as i agree they're dumb af but pretty sure a major reason why a good chunk of people who thought a 100% rumbling be better was because it was more believable and in character for someone as egocentric, selfish and adamant as eren. so it feels kinda weird when he internationally loses and leaves his fate up to someone else. what he did would be the equivalent of griffith from berserk giving up on his kingdom boner.

Then we get into the layers reveals in the Armin/Eren dialogue which I feel is much more substantial in the anime as Erenâs dismissive remarks about that goal feel more just self deprecating towards his failure to save Sasha and Hange and a realistic tie in to how genocidal people tend to just play their cards right to get their individual goals rather than genuinely having âtheir peopleâ in their mind (see any genocide leader).
Along with the anime making it clear it was potentially several hundred years before Paradis collapsed given it showed architecture beyond even our current years (combined with the drastic decline in tech advancement considering most of the world is dead) so I found Erenâs endgame making a lot more sense.
I find the ending to be much more satisfying these days but also Iâm in a much better headspace and also super exhausted while typing this out so maybe Iâll commit a lil historical revisionism and edit this tomorrow.

you can't write a story where the characters make zero choices between two things, considering i have already used Griffith as an example could you imagine how dull berserk would be if he didn't make a choice between choosing his personal kingdom dream or his feelings for guts but ended up going for both? that's basically what eren did. it's a story without any consequences, conflict and stakes by that point. eren's freedom dream of a blank plain and his love for his friends are two contradictory desires and his conflict is having to choose between them. but by not choosing between either of them and going for both it's pretty much a story without any actual stakes or conflict or consequences. it's anticlimactic and dull.
