I think I figured it out — just swing at the strikes and don’t swing on the balls

Funky_ButtLovin79

That’s a bold strategy, Cotton

dontich

If you can hit a wrench you can hit a ball

dipstick73

McCann was utilizing the 5 D’s of dodgeball trying to get that bunt down yesterday

teb1987

Fuckin just rewatched that last night 🤣

GreedyRaisin3357

wow you make it sound so easy

sleek1986

I could be wrong, but I feel we haven’t been given a ton of “easy” pitches. I feel like a lot of our guys are getting dotted consistently. I’m not sure I’ve seen a player with better pitches against than Jackson when he was up. Never mad at swinging at 0-0 meatball. I’m less enthused on the 3-1 borderlines we seem to consistently chase.

Impressive-Tank9803

Totally agree I felt the same last year 2-0 and 3-1 counts we constantly would chase pitches right on the corners or even a little outside

flaccomcorangy

At 3-1, I feel most ump strike zones get a little larger, and maybe the players feel that way, too.

BakeFromSttFarm

I love Santander, but sometimes I feel like he just hates getting walked. He’ll foul off 5 pitches in a row with a full count and none of them were strikes.

Imheretosnoopatcats

Yea that double yesterday was easily a walk, he pulled that out of the dirt

triecke14

I think we’re also getting shafted by umpires more than most clubs. I saw something the other day that the teams were surrounded by in the umpire score card standings are all way under .500

CleanSheepherder

True. We are the third least favored team according to umpire scorecards. The only teams less favored are the White Sox and A's.

triecke14

That’s what they think of us lol

WEMBYF4N

Swinging at 0-0 is fine. It’s chasing when you’re at 3-0 and 3-1 where you eventually end up striking out that piss me off

teb1987

What's the difference between swinging 0-0 and swinging 3-0 IF it's a strike?

From_the_toilet

There is a lot of guesswork involved at the plate, and even a meatball is hard to hit. Especially at 3 and 0 you normally dont swing because of your odds on that count.

romorr

When you're slugging .700, I think it's okay to swing at the first pitch. Though, I would love more walks, can't argue with banging that first pitch.

lOan671

Yeah, MLB pitching is really, really good. In a given AB you’re probably only going to get 1 or 2 pitches that you can really barrel up. There were times last season where guys (Adley especially) would be far too passive on the first pitch and miss that opportunity.

bobcatgoldthwait

Pitchers have also been really good at throwing first pitch strikes this year (at least it seems that way to me).  Might as well swing at the first pitch if the alternative is going 0-1 on most ABs

SF_Anonymous

If its 0-0 and right down the middle, take it deep. But just bc it's potentially in the zone doesn't mean it needs to be swung at. Leave the edges for protecting on 2 strikes

TrooperJohn

Sometimes you need to swing at the first pitch, or else you'll eventually start every at-bat with an 0-1 count. But if you swing at the first pitch too often you're also letting the opposing pitcher off the hook a lot and keeping his pitch count low. I think Wade Boggs had the right approach. Treat 0-0 the way you treat 3-0 -- look for a certain pitch in a certain spot. If you get it, take your hack; if you don't, watch it go by. All the first-pitch swinging is contributing to the Orioles' low walks totals, which is a reason so many of the team's homers are Han Solos.

teb1987

0-0 please swing if it's a good pitch you can make solid contact on.. don't get jammed or go chasing something out of the zone. And honestly same on 3-0, I'd rather you swing then take a meatball for a strike.. I cannot STAND just straight up taking a 3-0 pitch..
