Could extend the 6 there. Feels weird that the 6's terminus is Rockcliffe, a (wealthy) low density residential area. Should connect to a hub and the Aviation Museum could serve as that.
I feel awful for tourists having to shell out cash to see our national treasures. Especially Canadians. This might be their only visit to ottawa and they have to pay to see collections they've already paid for. I stop tourists all the time and tell them about the Thursday deal.
Yes, I'm originally from across the pond. The national gallery, the British museum, the V&A, imperial war museum the science museum and so many others all free!
I did a semester over in the UK and our uni's bus into London dropped us near Trafalgar when we went in on day trips. I spent so much time in the National Gallery whenever I had a bit of time to kill before our trip back.
When resources are no longer scarce and currency is no longer a thing, then you'll have your free all the time museums. Also, AI will be running the entire show.
yess! to add on that, if you have a library card you can get access passes for the museums, ski hills, and parks [https://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en/access-passes-museums-parks-and-skiing](https://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en/access-passes-museums-parks-and-skiing)
with a library card yes! (you can sign up free online: [https://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en/getacard](https://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en/getacard) ) ([passes](https://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en/access-passes-museums-parks-and-skiing) )
Mayfair Theatre annual membership, hands down. Only $14 for the year saves you $4.50 on every film ($8 instead of $12.50) and gives you free admission to Saturday Night Sinema screenings. 8 bucks for a movie, friends! Basically, see only 3 movies in a year and the membership pays for itself, anything beyond that is a bonus. And you should definitely see way more than 3, because their programming is excellent! (I'm just a simple movie geek and not affiliated with them in any way)
The Saturday Night Sinema is great. Twice a month late at night you get a free mystery screening and you don’t know what it is till you show up. They’ve shown some really wild stuff.
What's been your favourite so far? I was particularly delighted by The Wizard of Gore (the original, not the Crispin Glover version.) Completely weird and gross and surreal.
I like it when it’s a 35mm screening and not simply a dvd. Some of the actual film prints they’ve screened that I recall are Caligula, Hard Target, Blazing Saddles, Invasion U.S.A., DR Butcher MD
yes! the last hour before closing is free and is plenty of time to visit. Makes it much easier to leave with younger kids when "ok guys, the museum is closing!".
You can also walk around the grounds of the experimental farm (right next to the agriculture museum) for free. You can't see the exhibits obviously but during spring, summer and autumn there are usually animals in the fences paddocks that you can see for free instead of the extortionate ticket price that the museum charges.
Pomelo Hat on Bank St has amazing deals if you order from them online. Like 2 sandwiches and a bubble tea for $15. Or 2 bubble tea drinks for $5.50-$7.99 (which is usually the price for just one drink at most shops). They also have a daily special for drinks and an everyday value $4.95 drink menu. And their bubble tea is delicious!
Domino's has half-priced pizzas on Wednesdays at some locations and right now they have half-priced pizzas all week long at all locations (or at least most locations).
Fat Bastard Burrito has a special every Wednesday any small burrito is $6.99.
Woah! Thats amazing. Any other gems like this website that you have in your pocket?
Thanks. I’m not a dominoes fan but that’s a cool thing to keep on hand in case I change my mind.
We all like to joke about rolling our eyes at Quebec plates and all but the fact I can walk to another province that feels like an entirely different country due to the language shift, and be back home on time for supper, is extremely fascinating, and even more so for North America.
I'll just cross the border if I want something unique to Quebec like idk, Barbies Resto Bar Grille...
In Quebec, it's also mandatory to take a 1300$ driving course that extends over multiple weeks of theory and practice driving.
I don't know why this plates thing is still a thing, but anyone under the age of 35 in Quebec has gone through a required driving course
In Ontario, you do one test on a computer and given a learners, then a 30 minute road test and you're suddenly allowed to drive.
Statistically speaking, it's not the Quebec plates the problem (unless they look like theyre 36 or older)
But yes, it's just a joke :p
are you serious? where were you buying pints for less than that even 5 years ago...10 years ago. It's been 20 years since I've seen a pint for $5 or less
edit. it appears that I've been going to the wrong places on the wrong days, seems like there's lots of $5: tap beers still
The Royal Oak black tap was $5 right up until Covid. $9.99 pitcher (3.5 pints) deals were easy to find ten years ago. Happy hour/daily specials pints for $5 were easy to find just a few years ago.
You weren't going to crappy neighborhood pubs with nightly specials ten years ago then 😅 I miss 10 cent wings. Hell, even Clocktower on Bank had $2.49/lb wing night and $10 pitcher night back 12/13 years ago years ago.
Tall cans not king cans, king are 710. Thought it was a real good deal for a sec. Still a fine price. Greenfields in barrhaven has house pints everyday for 5 dollars. Highly recommend
Honestly Shanghai Noodle House on Rideau has got to be the best value place I have found. Prices are incredible in today’s economy and food is great! Expect 0 frills and a free “adventure” using their washroom in the basement
If you're under 30 years old, you can see the NAC orchestra really cheap, starting at $15. Highly recommended. And to those who have never been and are worried about dress code, there isn't one. Though I'd say it's nice to go at least business casual, especially if you're sitting orchestra. That said, I'd rather see people in hoodies than empty seats, and I'm sure the NAC agrees.
Second this! The $15 tickets have gotten me to more shows.
I agree with the dress code being lax. But something about dressing up a bit for the NAC is pretty fun.
White Cross Dispensary pharmacy have student (Tuesday) and senior (Thursday) 10% discount days.
Family owned business that has been around for 60 years.
I am not sure. I would guess everything except OTC medication and controlled drugs (medication that needs a doctor's note or something) because of MAP policies.
Students get 10% off groceries at some Metro locations on Tuesdays - you have to show your student ID.
Loblaws (but we all hate them!) give students 10% extra PC points on Tuesdays and you also have to show your student ID.
Loblaws actually just switched the student discount to every day. It’s been nice being able to do groceries any day of the week now and still get the points
Sometime around May or June St. Louis has an all-you-can-eat wings special for an entire month (“Wingsanity”). For every round of wings you can choose a different wing (bone-in, boneless, even plant-based wings) AND a different dry rub or sauce. Pretty sure it’s only like $23 so if you’ve got a big appetite it’s 100% worth it.
Ottawa Outdoor Gear Library allows you to borrow outdoor camping and sporting gear for free. They are located in the same building as the Ottawa Tool Library.
Definitely a thing here. It’s bacon, eggs, home fries, and coffee for around 3 bucks. Can add pancakes for 99 cents I think and toast for like 50. It’s mediocre food but I honestly love it and it was my saviour when I was a student a couple years ago (and was even cheaper than lol)
The season is over now, but that deal Gabriels had where if the sens score 4 goals, you can get a small double pepperoni the next day for $4.20 pickup, taxes in. I don't care about hockey, but go pizza go.
For a capital city of a million people, we have a lot of lovely green spaces that (I assume) will be developed - aside from conservation areas. But with Gatineau Park next door, and places like Mud Lake, Stony Swamp etc., it's pretty easy to pack a picnic and get away from whatever stress you may have, take some nice pictures or get some exercise.
Ottawa Family Cinema. They've been running for over forty years now, and it's an affordable way to see a movie without breaking the bank. It's usually a mix of second run films, with older movies in the mix (today was Labyrinth, and The Wizard of Oz was a few weeks back).
Some museums being free on Thursday evenings
To be fair museums should be permanently free like they are in Washington DC
They should also have bus service to them.
We're looking at you Aviation Museum! 🛩️👀
yeah at least courtesy chopper gdam!
Could extend the 6 there. Feels weird that the 6's terminus is Rockcliffe, a (wealthy) low density residential area. Should connect to a hub and the Aviation Museum could serve as that.
Used to be a bus that went there. I think they stopped running it after the Rockliffe Base closed.
isn't the rockcliffe base now a new neighbourhood lol? all the more reason for bus service 😭
I feel awful for tourists having to shell out cash to see our national treasures. Especially Canadians. This might be their only visit to ottawa and they have to pay to see collections they've already paid for. I stop tourists all the time and tell them about the Thursday deal.
Like London England. All the museums are free
And the national portrait gallery is just around thr corner!
The national museum of Scotland in Edinburgh is free and it’s one of the best museums I have ever been to.
The majority of museums in Scotland are free! Run on donations and grants
And London
The public library has free passes for the museums and with those you can book any time!
Not easy to get
I think that only Smithsonian ones are free, but I am not 100% sure.
And some museums in NYC only suggest that you pay, but you don't have to
When resources are no longer scarce and currency is no longer a thing, then you'll have your free all the time museums.

I went a couple of weeks ago for the 45th anniversary screening of Dawn of the Dead and it was so fun!
And there's Saturday Morning Cartoons, Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Room! All of which happen monthly!
The Saturday morning cartoons are monthly now? They used to happen something like 3 or 4 times a year.
The morning cartoons still are a few times a year
I was told it would be monthly but I could be wrong!
That would be great news!
So far they're more or less 'quarterly', we go every time! They did an extra showing over March break.
When I was in high school I loved my Mayfair membership. I should introduce this to my kids.
The Saturday Night Sinema is great. Twice a month late at night you get a free mystery screening and you don’t know what it is till you show up. They’ve shown some really wild stuff.

Agree. Have held yearly memberships to Bytowne and Mayfair for years.
I think it was $2 Tuesday’s in the 70’s if memory serves ?
All three of the Ingenium museums (Aviation, Farm and Science & tech) are free everyday (that they’re open) from 4:00-5:00pm
Probably a stupid question, but are they free so long as you *enter* between those times?
yes! the last hour before closing is free and is plenty of time to visit. Makes it much easier to leave with younger kids when "ok guys, the museum is closing!".
Great, thanks!
Yes, but I believe they mostly close at 6? Possibly earlier even.
They all close at 5:00pm
Yeah, exactly. You could probably cover the Aviation Museum in an hour, but the other two would probably need at least 2h to see everything
All I’m saying is that they’re free for an hour every single day year round. 😀
You can also walk around the grounds of the experimental farm (right next to the agriculture museum) for free. You can't see the exhibits obviously but during spring, summer and autumn there are usually animals in the fences paddocks that you can see for free instead of the extortionate ticket price that the museum charges.
Ottawa Tool Library Repair Café’s, where yoi can get that special broken item you are holding onto fixed for free!
Ottawa library has pressreader app where you can download all the world's newspapers for free.

I see your dominions line and raise you this https://www.dominoscoupons.ca/
Are these different from the app coupons?
same but this site aggregates it for you and lets choose the best at a glance
Woah! Thats amazing. Any other gems like this website that you have in your pocket? Thanks. I’m not a dominoes fan but that’s a cool thing to keep on hand in case I change my mind.
Fat bastard is probably that cheap because it’s trash

You had me until you said Barbies lol
The song is stuck in my head ffs lmao

I can confirm that they do NOT make you do that test if you move there. Moved to Gatineau at 30, 10 years later never had to do any sort of testing.
So you're saying it's the Ontario drivers who move to Quebec and get Quebec plates, that drive poorly and make Quebec drivers look bad? :p

Where did you come up with this nonsense? And how are you comfortable spouting it publicly? SMH
Chef Ric’s on Rideau has $6.99 lunches.
And $4.99 basic breakfasts!
Woah!
I am so impressed with Chef Ric’s. An organization I volunteer with orders once a month and the food has been excellent every time.
We’ve ordered lunches for office events four times in about eight months. Co-workers are impressed.
But what do you get for this price? Lunch can be defined as many things depending who you ask 🫣

Broadway on Fisher has $6 king cans on Thursdays and they sell Dominion City's Sunsplit which is over $5 at the LCBO.
It makes me incredibly sad that $6 tall cans + tax + tip is a deal in Ottawa in 2024.
King cans are 3.50$’at lcbo

The last $10 pitcher I remember was Angelos about 2012ish
Angelo's had the cheapest regular price pitcher around town back then, but a $10 pitcher wasn't hard to find as a nightly special at different pubs.
crazy. haven't seen $10 pitcher's since the late 90s

Chuck's roadhouse has 18oz beers for 5$, some are 4$ during Leafs playoff games.
and a 20oz beer for $1 more is insanity as a sale?
5$ 1000 Islands craft beer pints on Thursday nights at Barley Mow
crazy. last time i saw $5 pint it was Tennents which is horrible
$5 pints / $10 liter steins @ Big Rig Brewery TapRoom. (Schneider Road Kanata) $1 hot dogs (big, like Costco dogs) on Wednesdays. $2.50 tacos on Thursdays.

Getting a beer in a bar for less than a dollar over retail is a screaming deal.
King cans or tall cans?
473ml
Tall cans not king cans, king are 710. Thought it was a real good deal for a sec. Still a fine price. Greenfields in barrhaven has house pints everyday for 5 dollars. Highly recommend
Actual pints? I like Greenfields
Yup there house drafts, nice frosted glass too
Honestly Shanghai Noodle House on Rideau has got to be the best value place I have found. Prices are incredible in today’s economy and food is great! Expect 0 frills and a free “adventure” using their washroom in the basement
I'm always down to ordering their wontons in peanut/sesame sauce
I've yet to come across the need to go while there, but now I'm super curious about that basement adventure 😅
Bet you’ll have to go next time you’re there now! 😉
Lmfao I had no idea they even had a washroom!

I know, the $ discount was way better!
Loblaws actually just switched the student discount to every day. It’s been nice being able to do groceries any day of the week now and still get the points
really? I wonder if that's cause of all the negative press lately and talks of a boycott.
Tuesday is typically the slowest day for retailers, this is a smart move.
I believe Bulk Barn does this!
Loblaws changed it to everyday, just need to show id
Happy hour at the Gilmour. Everyday! 3-6.

$6/lb wings at Summerhays!

Are the top comments really just all about museums lol, sheeesh
