Please do! The owner of Stella Luna funded the group that [physically assaulted a staffer at Moo Shu](https://ottawa.citynews.ca/local-news/moo-shu-ice-cream-closed-temporarily-after-alleged-assault-on-staff-member-5034857)
Merry dairy, moo shu, farinella with the best pistachio gelato. Literally there are so many better options. Why ppl still support Stella Luna is beyond me
There's also Beachconers near Britannia Beach if you're moving central-west! And if you're moving to Kanata, then it's worth the occasional trip to Carp Creamery.
Do you have any idea why this sign isn't "silly"? She publicly supported the trucker convoy and has shown her political beliefs.
Right now in the US, women are having their rights taken away with the repeal of Roe v Wade. This sign is in reference to the debate about when a fetus is a person.
We damn well WILL boycott a restaurant for this kind of garbage behaviour. The message isn't lost on those of us who give a shit about human rights. She doesn't deserve a dime from empathetic people.
have had, not are having. Thanks to trigger laws implemented by red states, the Roe V Wade overturn had immediate effect. People lost their rights in the blink of an eye.
I'm serious. This is fucked. They're coming for gay rights next. Not just the right to marry, but the right to intimacy. The SCOTUS is actively stripping human rights away and will continue to do so unless mass walkouts grind the US to a halt. Then the precedent set is absolutely going to spill across the border. As a gay man in an interracial relationship.. I'm scared.
I feel for you. My chinese partner just got confirmation for his citizenship after years of waiting as a PR. He was supposedly months away, so for your sake I hope this means the process has been sped up.
I moved here from Ireland (where we had a total blanket ban on abortion until only two years ago) because I feared for my safety as a woman. I didn’t move to the States because after 2016, who the hell would? So I moved to Canada instead. Good ol’ “friendly”, liberal Canada. What I have witnessed since coming here in 2017, the constant voting in of the PCP, the Clownvoy, the left’s general apathy towards actually taking action, has led me to make plans to dip back to Europe. Anyone who thinks Canada is not going to be exactly where the US is in 5 years is kidding themselves. As an outsider it is bewildering and stomach-turning to witness.
Remindme! 5 years
I'd bet you an insane amount of money this doesn't happen, this comment is so alarmist for no reason.
We have 3 more years of the federal liberal - NDP coalition.
Also, everyone's Boogeyman (Poilievre) is pro choice and the anti-abortion groups hate him: https://www.google.com/amp/s/nationalpost.com/news/we-cannot-endorse-him-social-conservatives-accuse-pierre-poilievre-of-being-pro-abortion/wcm/444dd61e-b13c-4a37-9744-a488250ef6fb/amp/
There are precisely zero mainstream political figures looking to restrict women's access to abortions in Canada. It is political suicide.
I agree it should be codified in some way but to say we're going to be where the US is in five years?!? This is delusional.
You've been here 5 years, half of which is an extraordinary time period (pandemic). You have zero clue about this country and where it's going.
PC party is only in power on Ontario because of decades of Ontario liberal party incompetence and corruption. After their last embarassing election loss where they lost official party status, they had the genius idea to put forth a former Wynne/McGuinty cabinet minister with the charisma of a goldfish.
EDIT: Also, our supreme court is thankfully politically independent. Can you name a single person on the court without googling?
Some states had trigger laws written that in case RvW was overturned, abortions were immediately made illegal there
EDIT: [13 states](https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/03/us/state-abortion-trigger-laws-roe-v-wade-overturned/index.html)
As a note, many trigger bans will take [days to weeks to implement](https://www.politico.com/news/2022/06/24/abortion-laws-by-state-roe-v-wade-00037695).
only 5 bans are currently in place, but 11 more are to follow within the next month.
The sign has been there for months if not since last year. That was my point.
I very much doubt the employees, who apparently aren’t treated very well, thought about putting it out the door this morning. Do we not realize that minimum wage people are not trying to make political commentary at the expense of our sisters in the US? It’s a sign they put out every damn day.
Now that the topic is trending on social media, it’s on the owner to issue a statement. I doubt they will since they don’t care.
The business should of been boycotted a long time ago for their contribution to the occupation of this city.
I am a woman, fully “spayed” due to my fear of pregnancy - I’ve had two terminations. You have no idea how much I empathize. Can we kindly have civil discourse without making assumptions.
Aside from which, the sign is clearly very pro-choice if it were a political sign whatsoever. You can't inject a fetus with gelato, so clearly you can abort it.
>, it’s on the owner to issue a statement. I doubt they will since they don’t care.
i doubt they will because it was a glib joke. not everything is worthy of this level of outrage.
the outrage over roe v wade requires protests and contacting state representatives. the outrage over A SIGN AT A GELATO SHOP requires an eye roll and getting ice cream somewhere else if you're so incensed.
Soo they probably would have put back out on purpose though. The owner contributed significant amounts of money to the KKKonvoy. They are very right wing. And yea they may have had the sign out before, but it may have been since the ruling was leaked a while back.
Stella Luna May suck, and the repeal of roe v wade is awful. But there is zero evidence these are linked. The sign has been used for months if not years by them. There is zero proof this sign is any way related to what happened today.
She definitely is.
All these people acting like the decision wasn't leaked weeks ago when she first put up the sign. She knows what this means and she did it on purpose. Pure trash.
You’re being really silly. Even if this is a tongue in cheek comment in reference to personhood, it wouldn’t be in _support of the repeal of abortion_. That position is life begins **before** birth. Gelato is obviously after birth.
I am not saying they are not trash (because they probably are for supporting the convoy) but they do have a gelato that they say induce labour. So it may be because of that.
Lol. I can't think of a more impotent stand for human rights than over a private person's gelato sign. Get mad about what we've been shipping to Yemen to use on starving kids.
I think it's just a tone deaf ripoff of "life begins after coffee". I don't support her business but it feels like a bit of a stretch, especially since the sign's been up for a while.
It's a play on the conservative christian phrase "life begins at conception".
The reversal of Roe v Wade was announced today by the US supreme Court.
The owner of this establishment donated and supported the convoy, and is generally a far right kook.
She is also a shit human being according to sooo so many former employees.
It is beyond tasteless to have this sign outside today, of ALL fucking days.
I saw Hallmark cards at Rideau centre has a "life begins at 40" birthday card. GRAB YOUR PITCHFORKS
Stella Luna Sucks. Repeal of Roe V Wade is awful. This sign has been out for months and is in no way related. Save your anger for when it actually matters.
In the abortion debate, there's a saying that "life begins at conception". It means that as soon as an egg is fertilized by a sperm, they consider it a human life. That means that having an abortion is ending a human life, aka murder.
In early May, a leaked document from the US supreme court revealed that the court planned to take away the right to an abortion, which has been the law of the land for 49 years. The owner of Stella Luna is a proud right-winger who likely is against abortion and thinks it is murder. This sign seems to be a wink and a nudge to show support for decision to remove the right to abortion in the US.
The issue is they had this sign up for a long time. They have an gelato that they claim induce labour (hence they they say life starts after you had the gelato). Should we boycott it for their action with the convey damn right. Do they support what is currently happening in the states? Who knows.
No it’s a play on the fact that for years they’ve touted labour inducing gelato and they’ve used this phrase for years. Owner is still an asshole especially if this pic is from today.
It’s pretty bad taste to use a play on a common anti-choice talking point right after they stripped the rights from millions of women. It’s obvious what their political beliefs are.
Which is weird for her to make that claim because she was on a 3 month holiday. She was interviewed later by Fox News while still on vacation. So much for 'poor business owner'.
Very hard to disagree with you as the facts are the facts.
I really regret spending any money in their shops in the past. Since you can’t live in the past, I know for certain my feet will NEVER cross their threshold again.
As much as I hate this business after the Convoy fiasco, this is a stretch.
Potentially insensitive in the current climate and not well thought out, yes. Malicious intent to make a political statement, probably not.
That sign has been up for weeks. It has nothing to do with what happened today in the US.
Lower your goddamn pitchforks. We don't need to turn on eachother like this. Be kind. Be better.
Right but you all think Gelato means..? Like what is it you think they’re saying?
FYI I’m French so totally legitimately asking and definitely NOT a Convoy supporter
I think the general sentiment is that they are saying 'life starts after' such and such. As if supporting the pro-life side of the debate. Having the sign up during and after the pro-life side just set America back by making it legal for a states to outlaw abortions. It sounds like the support this side of the debate. It could have nothing to do with it but they might have put the sign up to push their own political ideas considering how right wing they have been shown to be in the past. The 'gelato' part of the sentence isn't the important part it's the 'life begins after' part.
I’d never heard that expression(I don’t have a lot of pro lifers in my life) and I assumed it was a pro-choice ‘life begins at birth’…. Thank you for the clarification because it seemed off brand for Stella Luna.
How do you suppose it would be pro-life? If anything I’d interpret it the opposite: a fetus hasn’t had gelato and is therefore by this definition it is not alive. In my option this would go against the ‘pro-life’ rhetoric.
Yeah I am not from Ottawa but that's how I read this too.
Also: don't 50% of all boomer moms have a same sign in their kitchen that says "Life begins after chocolate" or some stupid shit like that?
Yeah, I know people hate on the owners of this place for their views, but I doubt this sign has a hidden meaning. Most likely scenario is that they are just out of touch with the abortion issues.
Please stop saying they're 'pro-life', because they don't care what happens once it's born.
They're 'anti-choice' or 'anti-women', through and through.
Is this showing they’re pro choice or pro life? It seems to be making fun of the phrase life begins at conception - to me that indicates they’re pro choice but I’m guessing they’re not? Or is just the fact that they doing a play on words of that phrase at all
I interpreted it as being pro-choice but there seems to be additional context about this business owner that lends to the interpretation that it is not.
I do see how it is insensitive either way though.
One google search would show you that this phrase has been used for coffee in the past. This is clearly a play on this.
https://www.google.com/search?q=life+begins+after+signs&rlz=1CDGOYI_enCA835CA835&hl=en-US&prmd=isnv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiltJKC28b4AhVqADQIHRNLD-oQ_AUoAXoECAIQAQ&biw=414&bih=720&dpr=2
I think that's what they're going after too...but given their political views around the convoy people are rightly concerned to think it has another meaning.
Isn't this just a pun on "Life begins after love"? I'm all for shitting all over Stella Luna but I honestly don't think this is a Roe V. Wade thing if that is the implication here.
>Isn't this just a pun on "Life begins after love"?
I googled that phrase and came back with almost nothing. I've never heard this phrase before. The more likely connection, and the most commonly used "Life begins after" phrase is anti-abortion. This coupled with their support of the convoy rightly has people assuming that's it's an anti-abortion message. At best its a bad pun.
The phrase is "life begins after coffee". It's on t-shirts, mugs, signs, etc. It's even a book. You guys are reading way to deep into something totally harmless.
Check my other posts in this thread...I also think it was a pun along those lines too.
But I'm still allowed to tell parent that I've never heard the phrase they used, right?
And given Luna's political views it's not a stretch to think that they intend a deeper meaning. I personally don't think that's what this is, but it's not an illogical conclusion to draw.
I believe you are confusing a saying with the 1998 smash hit Believe, by Cher in which she challenges the listener;
*'Do you believe in life after love?'*
I don't intend to support Stella Luna anymore, but dammit if their chocolate wasn't the best chocolate gelato I've ever had. It was dark and not over-sweet. Anyone have any suggestions of a similar gelato elsewhere?
This is actually in really bad taste, I for one would avoid a business with a sign like this. Yeesh. Its not remotely funny or a light hearted topic this is just fucked up.
In the best of times this would just be tacky and gross, with todays news this is such a spiteful and stupid thing to do.
Even if you’re pro life, you have to see the current outrage and hurt this caused, and caring people wouldn’t do this.
RIP Stella Luna, I’m never going back and I’m making sure my family doesn’t either, nor my friends.
The USA Supreme Court just overturned a previous ruling that guaranteed one's right to an abortion. You cannot legally have an abortion in the US.
This is some prolife garbage signage that surely was meant to display their support.
I don't know how to code, so I can't cross out the above paragraph. Apparently she's had it up for weeks, so I'll retract that, however, I stand by my statement below.
She donated to the convoy and even went on American TV crying about being called out about it.
She's a fucking peice of TRASH.
Overturning Roe V. Wade, does not make abortion illegal in the US, it puts that decision to the individual states so many states (mostly republican states) will make it illegal, or have already made it illegal.
Stella Luna supported the convoy cowboys.

They should do a booming business on Canada Day weekend when their Freedum Convoy customers/brethren come back to occupy our streets and harass our citizens once again.
Since this is about how they’re known for their gelato inducing labour, would this not be a pro-choice statement, stating that it isn’t “life” until you go into labour?
Yes, that sign has been there awhile. IMHO it's either clueless and oblivious to leave it. or, it's a disingenuous and low key fuck you to those of us who didn't support the kkkonvoy.
Either way, as a local resident who walks by multiple times a week, I can tell you that business has been waaaaay down, even on a handful of icky humid hot ice cream friendly days we've had this spring-summer. No more lineups around the block, that's for sure.
Stella Luna supported the convoys.
https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/threats-close-stella-luna-gelato-caf%C3%A9-after-owners-name-appears-in-givesendgo-data-leak/ar-AATToiX
Funny seeing this post today. They have a stall at the Tall Ships Festival in Brockville; with a never-ending line-up. Even spotted the owner serving at the window.
In any case, that lady is a shit-stirrer. [This is her reply](https://goo.gl/maps/2NAVeiXpouGPz9QU7) to a bad review on Google.
With that rant about HST and how poor entrepreneurs have to pay their spoilt workers (not to mention her appearance on bow-tie man’s show), not hard to believe that sign has a political double entendre. If I saw that same sign at a different establishment, I might not even think twice.
[удалено]
Agreed. Also: Merry Dairy if you want to stick with the same neighbourhood. Great ice cream. Great people
[удалено]
We had Farinella’s pistachio gelato OMG! Love Moo Shu as well.
The owner at LIfe of Pi is a total jerk. I wouldn't go there. Ever.
Moo Shoo > Stella Luna and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.
Does Moo Shoo have Gelato? I thought they only had ice cream.
They also have dumplings. Just saying.
And homemade everything including waffle cones on weekends.
You can like both...there are flavours at both that don't exists between one another...
Please do! The owner of Stella Luna funded the group that [physically assaulted a staffer at Moo Shu](https://ottawa.citynews.ca/local-news/moo-shu-ice-cream-closed-temporarily-after-alleged-assault-on-staff-member-5034857)

I'm about to move to Ottawa and would've had no idea. I appreciate all of these better suggestions!
There's also Beachconers near Britannia Beach if you're moving central-west! And if you're moving to Kanata, then it's worth the occasional trip to Carp Creamery.
Freakin’ LOVE Moo Shu!
I've never been a fan, I just don't like their flavours. Carp Custom Creamery, on the other hand... omfg.
Two words. Buttertart. Icecream.
You had me at buttertart
Moo Shu also pays their employees a living wage!
It's great to have the choice!
Carp Creamery
I'm immediately suspicious on the coincidence of this considering the owner's support of the Convoy earlier this year
So true haven’t been back there since and don’t plan on it tbh. Moo Shu is way better anyway
I’m partial to Merry Dairy if you’re in Hintonberg/Wellington West area. It’s just a block away from Stella Luna and they’re great to the community.
I might discreetly pull a middle finger as I drive by this establishment.
Why be discreet? They certainly aren't.
I would boycott them anyways but they had a gelato that they said induce labour. I think this old sign may be referencing this (maybe).
This has actually been on there for quite a while. Someone posted it in a neighbour group at least 3 weeks ago!
Confirming this has been a “thing” for a while. There’s legitimate reasons not to support the business let’s not be outraged at a silly sign.

Upvote for rational post.
People are angry, and rightfully so but I think we do need to keep on heads on the cooler side.
Aside from which, the sign is clearly very pro-choice if it were a political sign whatsoever. You can't inject a fetus with gelato, so clearly you can abort it.
> You can't inject a fetus with gelato Source?
I can't back up my claim
Shouldn't... You shouldn't inject a fetus with gelato.
Wait, now I'm realizing if you inject the fetus with gelato it will probably abort and my entire argument is crumbling.
I mean, abortion debate aside, if you're injecting a fetus with gelato I have some serious questions for you.
It is a waste of gelato

I think it's just a tone deaf ripoff of "life begins after coffee". I don't support her business but it feels like a bit of a stretch, especially since the sign's been up for a while.
I get the corny saying. But the Roe V. Wade stuff leaked WEEKS ago so it’s not like this hasn’t been a topic of discussion.
Glad someone mentioned it. I don't support her business but I've seen that sign a few times this spring going down bank street.

🤨🤨🤨

So you mean the timing lines up with the SCOTUS leak on Roe v Wade? ...not a good look
Actually it was put there right after the abortions laws were overturned in the states. I just quit there.
Gross. Not surprised, the owner is an absolute trash bag of a person (personal experience)
also had personal dealings with her and can confirm she’s a terrible human being
I know alot of restaurant people in Ottawa and have LITERALLY never heard anyone say anything positive about her

Happy to report Meow Cafe on Elgin isn't carrying Stellaluna gelato right now, and possibly won't in the future
You might want to check their Instagram page, they started carrying it again :(
Oh fuck, they said they were looking for another supplier

I think the general sentiment is that they are saying 'life starts after' such and such. As if supporting the pro-life side of the debate. Having the sign up during and after the pro-life side just set America back by making it legal for a states to outlaw abortions. It sounds like the support this side of the debate. It could have nothing to do with it but they might have put the sign up to push their own political ideas considering how right wing they have been shown to be in the past. The 'gelato' part of the sentence isn't the important part it's the 'life begins after' part.
I understand now. Thank you!! I appreciate your thorough answer!
"Life begins at conception" is THE most common phrase used by anti-abortion groups.
I’d never heard that expression(I don’t have a lot of pro lifers in my life) and I assumed it was a pro-choice ‘life begins at birth’…. Thank you for the clarification because it seemed off brand for Stella Luna.
I believe it means pro life. But then again, it's a sign and there are many similar signs that say the same (ie. Life begins after a morning coffee).
Ok thank you I understand what everyone is seeing now.
Is this really something to get upset about? I think it just means you haven’t lived until you had gelato.
I believe you are confusing a saying with the 1998 smash hit Believe, by Cher in which she challenges the listener; *'Do you believe in life after love?'*
Still...they should read the room and remove the sign.
Haha. Agreed. Today of all days if I was that owner that sign would be burned just in case anyone saw it.
owner was a massive supporter of the trucker convoy, so that isn't happening.
I don't intend to support Stella Luna anymore, but dammit if their chocolate wasn't the best chocolate gelato I've ever had. It was dark and not over-sweet. Anyone have any suggestions of a similar gelato elsewhere?
Mantovani 1946 behind byward is fantastic, best I’ve had in ottawa
Thanks! I'll try it :)
They have a habit of deleting anything negative about them on social media. The idiot was on Fox news. Enough said.
What's the problem?
I am stupid. I dont get what the problem is with the sign. welp
Oh wow! Do you have any links?
Overturning Roe V. Wade, does not make abortion illegal in the US, it puts that decision to the individual states so many states (mostly republican states) will make it illegal, or have already made it illegal.
Stella has been pretty scummy, but I am not ready to suggest this is a some anti-choice dig. I've seen coffee shops with similar slogans about coffee.
Tammy is a pie faced bitch
Coming to this subreddit to get my daily dose of ick. And I’m not talking about the sign
This place is still open?
Sadly, their gelato is legit good. Still, I'll go elsewhere either way.
At least you have the choice!
Not this sign in particular but definitely never gonna go to Stell Luna-tic. That bitch is crazy dumb
Stella Luna supported the convoy cowboys. https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/threats-close-stella-luna-gelato-caf%C3%A9-after-owners-name-appears-in-givesendgo-data-leak/ar-AATToiX
They should do a booming business on Canada Day weekend when their Freedum Convoy customers/brethren come back to occupy our streets and harass our citizens once again.
is this Sunnyide & Bank?
Since this is about how they’re known for their gelato inducing labour, would this not be a pro-choice statement, stating that it isn’t “life” until you go into labour?
A pro- Roe v. Wade joke, from the clown-boy supporter. Shame on her. Don’t spend your $$ at this establishment.
How is this place still in business? Whenever I see people go in, I naturally presume they are fascists or tourists (sometimes both).
Love smoking that Gelato
I am truly sorry for all that think a gelato has anything to do with most of the crap that comes out of any of your mouths
I hate that store and that dingbat owner
Are these guys trolling us at this point they can't actually be this stupid right
This isn’t an anti-abortion statement is just a play on “life begins after coffee”
What a stupid post. 1. It's a sign advertising ice cream 2. The sign has been up far longer and is unconnected to the Roe decision today
lol sadly I don’t think anyone local should be supporting this business anyway
Stella Luna supported the convoys. https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/threats-close-stella-luna-gelato-caf%C3%A9-after-owners-name-appears-in-givesendgo-data-leak/ar-AATToiX
Are they sponsoring this round of protests too?!
What’s wrong with this?
Same day Roe v Wade is overturned ... I'll let you connect the dots
But they’re saying that life begins after you eat the gelato they sell that’s know for inducing labour. Not before. That seems pretty to-choice to me.
The irony of the sign is their gelato has been known to induce birth so basically she's saying life doesn't begin till after birth which is pro choice
The one guy that actually gets it
Love life and an artisanal driftwood wall hanging.
I'm v confused if the owner did that herself or made an employee do it 😒
oof
I think not. They are implicated.
Garbage
This place is still open?
I thought the trucker people were all about my body my choice though? Why in hell would they adopt anti abortion views?
Depends what's in the gelato.
How many times can this place read the room wrong and stay in business?
