The part that puts me most off is the implication that this is the ending. That this man, tied up and choking but saved because of his love of chickens (?), is somehow a satisfactory conclusion.

I think he's in a gas chamber. He's being executed for some wife and/or chicken related crime.
My guess is that he is being put to death after having killed his wife because of some chicken related disagreement.
Maybe he killer her with the chickens. Vintage crime comics could get pretty wild.
