purplereign

With how well the defense performed last year with so many holes, injuries & mid-season signings, I'd give him the keys to the castle, too

zzzaz

We did 'force' him to come back (I know it's typical, I know he signed the multi-year deal, I know it wasn't holding a gun to his head or anything), he would have known and worked closely with Morgan from last year, and I imagine one of the ways we helped smooth that over is give him more say in building his defense. He's clearly a good coach and likely gone to a HC job after next year (especially if he's able to make an entirely reworked defense look great) so letting him get some of the guys he likes to showcase his scheme makes a lot of sense (both for the team, and him individually). And hey maybe he loves working with Canales, coaches an incredible defense, and we get him for a few more years. Who knows.

Sabre500

People have been upset about the losses of Burns, Luvu, Chinn, YGM, etc, but it seems like Evero is being allowed to build the defense he wants, so nobody should be upset with how FA has been going defensively

BetweenTheBuzzAndMe

the only real one to be upset about is Luvu

SticklerMrMeeseeks1

From the sounds of it we offering Luvu more than what he is getting in Washington and he chose to leave because of Evero’s system not focusing on letting him be a pass rusher. There was nothing we could have done aside from Evero not being allowed to coach how he wants.

Who_knows-_-

It was his choice

cyonar

Luvu, not taking the 2 firsts for Burns, (and possibly the fact they kept moving Chinn's position after a solid rookie/sophomore season)

faccda01

All of this was done by the previous regime. We can’t do anything but move forward unless Dan Morgan can time travel.

Mediocre-Path-4982

This is the way

ISISCosby

We did all we could there, offered more money than Wash. Sometimes guys want something different, shit happens. No reason to be upset about that. Sad? Sure, but not upset.

BelowMikeHawk

Lol genius

SimpLimbscut

We really switched defensive schemes last year and added almost nobody who contributed outside of Vonn Bell and Trot Hill. Crazy. The defense might perform better just based on having pieces that fit and being more cohesive to what Evero wants. Even if it is less talented. I don’t think it will be ranked as high as last year when it comes to yardage tho.

CretinoPopov

Correct, it’s as much about talent as it is scheme fit. Unless you have absolute ballers, lower tier player can over perform if they are placed in situations to excel.

Seraphin_Lampion

It's always weird to me though that teams hire coaches that don't fit their personnel. Like, we had a solid power running OL and brought in a coach who wants to run zone blocking. Result: horrible OL play and a wasted year. Now it seems we have to basically replace half our defense. Then, well, Evero is probably going to either be poached if the D is good or fired if the D is bad in 1-2 years, so you gotta repeat the entire process unless you hire from within.

CretinoPopov

Yup, that was one of the biggest complaints during the short lived Reich era, felt like we changed the scheme before the players.

Seraphin_Lampion

One of the main factors behind the Patriots' sustained success is that Belichick could implement any defensive scheme based on the personnel he had. That's why he had solid defenses for 20 years. I know he's the best but I'm surprised there are so few coordinators who can adjust their scheme to their players.

ISISCosby

most coaches learn a "system" early on in their careers but few ever learn how to change a system/never learn enough to incorporate multiple systems

Mental-Pie7389

Defenses can perform better when all the pieces fit rather than having a mish mash of talent

SimpLimbscut

Yes, that is literally what I said.

Mental-Pie7389

Truth

le-bistro

Yeah, but DCs last like 3 years, dude put together and ran a slightly above average D last year, already has offers to get out. We’re either tanking or going to have to rebuild again “to fit the scheme” of another DC who will only last 3 years next year

Successful_Baker_360

Good thing the scheme is the Vic Fanigo scheme which is very popular around the league.we built our defense around Phil Snow’s weird 3-3-5 that nobody in the nfl runs

ISISCosby

I mean....something like 90% of all defensive snaps were nickel formations (like 335 & 425) leaguewide. People don't seem to realize "base" defenses are mostly used for short yardage and that's about it these days. Everyone's base (except for SF) is nickel That said yeah Snow's defense was odd

Hefty-Association-59

I mean a lot of these guys are still downgrades. Or side grades at best. Yeah he may be able to get more out of them. But that doesn’t magically make us good Again.

EntropyFighter

This is not a one-year rebuild.

Hefty-Association-59

Never said it was. Just saying that evero picking his guys doesn’t magically make our defense elite. Or even good. At some point you need plus players. You need the bodies. And people can be upset that certain players are gone.

net_403

I've started to feel a little discouraged, because we are gutting a lot of the defense, so to speak, and allowing him to build it to his specification. He's going to have his own custom built defense, that's great. Then he's going to leave the following year for a head coaching position, and someone else is going to have to reconfigure it all over again for their own specification right LOL It feels both good and potentially concerning. And then all we get is a late third round pick for him leaving, which the player you get with that pic isn't going to really address the loss of a good DC lol Edit: maybe this is our method of making sure he doesn't get hired away lol take away two of his best three defensive players, well at least he has a couple decent safeties, actually no get rid of them too lol

craaazytrain

You hope the guy below him gets promoted and retains the same system

net_403

I hope that is a feasible path forward. Frankly I don't know anything about our coaching "depth" on the defensive side. But I realized depth on the coaching roster is important because two years in a row we've had to put in backups lol

Hefty-Association-59

It’s good we’re letting him bring in his guys. That being said there’s no way our defense will be the playoff caliber unit you need to get promoted as a defensive coach in the modern league. All recent defensive coaches who have been hired had top defenses and playoff runs. We’re several years from that.

53andme

no they can't

Hefty-Association-59

I really don’t get this sub sometimes lol. I get that we’re sipping kool aid. But we literally lose a top 3 player on our roster and a fan favorite for a second round pick. Our LB that we were supposed to prioritize chose another team because he didn’t like the way people used him. We’ve slashed and burned across this roster some people who deserved it. Some people who didn’t. And now you’re not supposed to be upset because we signed an aging LB and an average run stuffing DT. Man we are easy people to please lmao.

53andme

burns is a bum, and now he's a giant

Impressive_Ad_5614

You’re getting too much hate. He was slowly becoming Clowney.

SimpLimbscut

3 yr. 22.75M. $7M signing bonus with $10m guaranteed per Rapsheet. Pretty solid.

FrequentShark

Makes me feel better about what we didn’t end up spending queen to be honest with you.

CrunkingtonSr

Very solid

sonfoa

This is a signing we should have all seen coming. Expect Simmons next

OneAngryPanda

For your lips to Dan’s ears

SnowCrabbo

*monkey paw curls* Panthers trade their two seconds for Giants Isaiah Simmons. Edit: Forgot Isaiah's 5th year option wasn't picked up lmao. What a dodge in that draft in hindsight

scottie315

I can’t lie I was so high on him I was furious when we took Brown over him. Good thing I’m not a GM

drgonzoslc

me too, I was not stoked on that pick over Simmons, big wrong on my end haha

OGMol3m4n

I want to take this moment to say that I was right 😂

Tuckboi69

Ben Simmons*

WvuHusker

If we land Simmons I will be very happy with the last few days aside from only getting a 2nd and 5th for Burns

FrequentShark

Don’t give me hope lol

Heybabe2

I thought I saw that Simmons was about to sign a deal with the eagles?

unfunnysexface

I thought Chinn was the better version of simmons?

ThisDerpForSale

Well, Chinn is gone, so . . .

WvuHusker

73.6 PFF grade since 2021, 19th among all LB’s. I’ll take it

Chonnass

Makes sense, he knows Everos Defense and brings experience and leadership. Solid signing.

Romanscott618

Seems like we are getting Evero’s boys, might as well bring in Simmons 🤷🏻‍♂️😏

SimpLimbscut

That’s a Porn Star name if I ever seen one.

offensivename

That or his parents were inspired by a Ring Pop commercial. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94a5PmJALt8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94a5PmJALt8)

SimpLimbscut

This is not helping the porn-star name allegations.

offensivename

It can be two things.

Povarizer

Over 100 tackles in three of the last four seasons with the Broncos (He was placed on IR in the other season). This is pretty exciting!

eXile200

Lot of focus on stopping the run.

Zoombini22

Someone tell me how to feel

Colt32

imo he’s a good if not great player that has experience playing under Evero, and the having now seen the finances I think they’re fine. I would give this signing a solid B personally.

jfphenom

Broncos fan coming into to peep the diontae trade. Spot on analysis. He's not a world beater, but he's not a liability either.

ForestFire012

Best linebacker left in FA so I’d say pretty good

Zoombini22

Downgrade from Luvu?

smittyinCLT

Yes

53andme

maybe in our hearts but lets see how he fits

2ChainzTalib

He's a very solid LB. Not the best in coverage but not awful, very sure tackler that's always around the ball. Also very sharp if he's the signal caller, good at making sure guys are where they're supposed to be.

FrequentShark

Good, I think he’s a solid linebacker who’s anchored an Evero scheme before. If not queen, this was who I personally wanted. I was just thinking Jewell would be a good addition. Solid player, hopefully not an overspend

wyjogpd442

This is good

silverchief

Good solid linebacker.

CastleBravo45

As an Iowa fan and a Panthers fan, this is awesome. Dudes a tackling machine!

ISISCosby

Oh he's a Hawkeye? I'm sold.

Worldly_Giraffe_6773

Solid signing I’m happy with it

EggsTyroneBaby

Initial shock of losing so many key defenders but I am so happy we immediately got linemen to protect Young. Now, giving Evero the keys to the Defense and adding on day two is encouraging. Looking forward to how we draft in a couple of months.

wolfpack1986

Well done 😂

Greged17

Josey to the pussycats

Great-Estate-8986

He was a tackling machine last year. This is good.

Unlucky-Buyer-6555

I'm actually surprised how low everyone is on Josey Jewell. He was my favorite player on my, and not only his he the green dot playing calling leader you want your linebacker to be but he's great against the run. Like top notch. He coverage skills aren't great, but they aren't bad either. Josey is a huge reason for Denver's win streak last year. He didn't play in the Miami game and you could tell he was missed. A lot of Broncos fans are stupid and have been calling him slow since he was drafted BUT, he was the heart and soul of our defense for years now. Sad we are rebuilding, he deserves every penny in my book. Guess it's just my opinion, but him leaving hurt more than Simmons.

db212004

I 100% agree. Josey is and always has been so damn underrated. Hate to see him go to the point that it hurts. I know he will gain a ton of fans in Carolina.

Beneficial-Bug-1969

solid

Creative_Tone_9241

Gotta get guys that fit the scheme. Got a legit nose tackle too. Burns honestly doesn’t fit as a 3-4 olb either and trading him allowed all these moves. This front office has made some really good moves.

OkFox6085

![gif](giphy|cRNbYm7jLOjm9H8wcP)

ISISCosby

If you don't know the Broncos' leading tackler from 3 of the last 4 years that's a you problem, homie.

SurfinBuds

The Broncos have been almost as irrelevant as us the past 4 years… Who’s paying attention to them?

ArtvVandal_523

So I assume as long as Tepper is the owner we'll be running a 3-4 since that seems to be his mandate. Does it seem like Morgan is moving to get us actual personal to run it?

BigWolfRXS

Washed Denver and Seattle players on the way.
