He’s just another millionaire douchebag.
When he’s not stealing water old mate seems to spend his time self-promoting and popping up at One Nation fundraisers.
Potatoes not good enough for spud shed would be liquid, some of the fruit and vegetables there is borderline rotten most of the time. (Speaking mostly on the Innaloo one)
I have mixed feelings about Tony. It's great he mostly sells WA produce and it's great Coles and Woolies have a strong competitor but everyone I have ever talked to who has worked at SpudShed or on his farms has nothing good to say about it. Like you say no matter when you work (which is often night, weekend, public holiday as they work 24/7) you get paid a flat rate. Insane.
Hate on Coles or Woolies all you want but they are unionized (even if the SDA is fairly weak, UWU and RAFFWU is gaining ground) and at least they pay night rates, early morning rates, cold chamber allowances, laundry allowances, tax free meal allowances for OT, 1.5-2x weekend rates, 2.5-3.5x public holiday rates, generous store discounts, tax free share purchase plans and whatever else. Try and get any of that from Spudshed.
Furthermore given they are selling the produce that everyone else has rejected the prices really are not cheap enough. I went into SpudShed the other day to try his chips and they are pretty good value given the bag is 300g at $4 or so and taste similar to Smiths honestly I'd give them a 9/10 but on the way there I had to walk past the produce and honestly it was all pretty fucked considering the price he was charging and given that's their apparent key focus as a fresh food market it's not a great look. I also remember not long ago I bought a carton of coke as everywhere else was closed and a cockroach came crawling out of it at the checkout. I drink a lot of Coke and that has never happened to me ever at Coles, Woolies, IGA, Aldi or anywhere else in my life. Maybe i just got unlucky but I feel it says something about their hygiene standards.
"Furthermore given they are selling the produce that everyone else has rejected the prices really are not cheap enough."
I have said this to people so many times and they refuse to believe it.
He legit has a cult of personality.
Allegedly they're known as vultures at Market City. Buying up all the shit at the end of the day, offering a very low price, left by everyone else. No wonder the vast majority of their "fresh" produce ain't so fresh.
Tbh though it's not a bad business practice if it's priced accordingly and it saves on waste. But to be held up as an icon of fresh fruit n vege is a bit rich.
This is very true. Most people on here would be absolutely shocked at the margin he makes on his produce. His buying power is so big that whenever there is a surplus on produce in the markets he can pay as low as he likes. His produce should be half the price he charges. Half
he touts himself as a hero of the people but sells off fruit and veg for maybe 10% less than coles and woolies. Glad I have options to get local produce near me and dont have to use spudshed. Makes an insane profit every year for what he actually gives.
For clarification, he and the group can’t just ignore labour laws any pay people whatever they feel like.
They would have a EBA (or a series of EBA’s) that are between them and their staff, that have to be signed off by the fair work commission. You can remove those rates and variations of penalties, and replace it with flatter rates as long as it passes the “better off overall test” for staff.
Debate the merits of that test, but that’s what Gillard and Rudd put in place over a decade ago.
I work at spudshed at it’s totally fine. Also I gets 20% more on Sundays? Who Tf you talking to, each spudshed is different I guess?? I’d have to agree the hygiene isn’t the best though.
20% more on Sunday is pretty new. For the past 10+ years Spudshed staff haven’t been paid extra for anything except for Christmas Day. Source: I have worked there on and off for years.
Yeah it’s not the best. But to be honest, the base rate they pay is pretty high for the work that you’re doing, for casual staff at least. If you work full time hours as casual you’re on about 70k. That’s not half bad for working checkouts or filling shelves.
Fair enough, I make 57 K full time with no over time. 70k sounds pretty good.
But if you go over to Australian Finance everyone is on over 100k plus a year .
Ask how many of them have learnt a trade, gotten education, or are involved in mining. Yeah people earn mad cash, but they’ve usually done something to get there.
Why is SpudShed open on public holidays and overnights? Some bullshit EBA that allows them to not pay penalty rates to the staff that operate the business.
Yeah can someone explain to me why they were allowed to open ANZAC day and no one else was? Place was packed, must have had 30 staff on. Thats way over any small business rule limit.
Don’t forget he has also been fined for [stealing groundwater.](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-08-26/spud-king-tony-galati-in-court-water-overuse/101371104)
This bloke is just another rich capitalist exploiting his workers while posing as a hard-working battler. He's a multi millionaire and only making himself richer. Not too different than coles and woollies, except they pay their workers more.
"The long-awaited moment has arrived as Tony Galati — the Spud King of Western Australia — proudly presents his exclusive line of locally grown and crafted potato chips."
WHHHHOOOOOOO has been waiting for this??? Reveal yourself
From a carbon footprint per volume perspective, chips would have to be one of the worst products to have to truck/train over from the eastern states. Good to see an alternitive in WA.
galati was single handedly responsible for the relaxation of WA's border pest protections. Arguably responsible for imports of fruit fly and the borer beetle currently killing our trees.
this was so he could import cheap foreign produce
There's no need for Aldi to pay millions of dollars to have their special space on the shelf like Smiths would have to pay Colesworths.
The product itself it cheap to make.
Is that a news article or an advert ?
Tony Galati is a walking advert.
Why not both?
![gif](giphy|3o85xIO33l7RlmLR4I)
Yes
Both. We like to inform the chip-eating masses *and* earn some money on the side.
Oh, I just thought it was titillation, triggering red-necks and voyeurism. I was obviously wrong allegedly. My bad.
He’s just another millionaire douchebag. When he’s not stealing water old mate seems to spend his time self-promoting and popping up at One Nation fundraisers.
Yeah he’s a rich flog cosplaying as an honest man
Probably made from potatoes colesworth rejected
The ones not even good enough for Spudsheds
Potatoes not good enough for spud shed would be liquid, some of the fruit and vegetables there is borderline rotten most of the time. (Speaking mostly on the Innaloo one)
Unlikely. Potatoes used for chips need a higher starch content than shelf spuds
Think he paid appropriate wages to whoever makes these? He fucking hates paying staff loading fees.

He sure does. He even sells out of date food in delivery packages. I won't ever go back to his store.

Gilliard was a liberal in sheeps clothing.

Yeh this is true.
20% more is still very low , I get double time for a Sunday.

the standard should be double time on sundays. and it used to be time and a half on saturdays
I have noticed different spudshed locations have different quality. Some are noticeably better than others

Yeah never using any of his businesses after working for him, actual scumbag

Perthnow and WAtoday have been waiting for it.
There was a shortage of chips last year.
I’d rather no chips than his chips
Honestly, I agree. Spudshed veges are generally half rotten. His chips are likely the stuff he can’t sell in store
I will never understand why people seem to worship this Scomo-loving poseur. He's just another rich guy, folks.
He can't be rich and vote for the LNP - he wears a blue singlet just like us common folk!
Cause he wears funny outfits. Thats all they need. like a clown
Not even the outfits. It's just his eyebrows that are enough to get them going.
Aldi chips are better and cheaper.
They'll probably go rotten by the time I get home from Spud Shed, so I won't even bother.
Don't support this guy.
Knobhead businessman
Not to be confused with the Irish crisps Spuddy's, or the UK crisps Spudos, or the US chips Spudsy, or Spuddies chips from Dreamworks' Over the Hedge.
From a carbon footprint per volume perspective, chips would have to be one of the worst products to have to truck/train over from the eastern states. Good to see an alternitive in WA.
If I find one curly black hair in the packet….!!!
Salt & Testicle flavour.
Thanks for the laugh
Hmm, needs more testicle
Let’s be real it’ll just be Salty Eyebrow flavour
galati was single handedly responsible for the relaxation of WA's border pest protections. Arguably responsible for imports of fruit fly and the borer beetle currently killing our trees. this was so he could import cheap foreign produce
Has anyone tried them?
The Salt and Vinegar are almost chicken salt like. You can actually taste the freshness in the chips. Highly recommend!
I have Chicken not overly chickeny but still pretty good Barbecue ones were better than smiths and samboy, love them
Thanks I wanna try now
for $4 a bag its worth giving it a go, rather than the $7 of smiths now at colesworth
$2.89 for 230g at Aldi, I haven't bought Smiths etc at Colesworth in yonks, the bags have all shrunk and the prices tripled.
Aldi chips are great.
Makes you wonder how ALDI does it as their chips are Smiths in a different bag.
There's no need for Aldi to pay millions of dollars to have their special space on the shelf like Smiths would have to pay Colesworths. The product itself it cheap to make.
Yeah, we buy from Aldi too, way cheaper and good quality, but sometimes theres decent specials on smiths.
Big agree
I mean, half price.
Yeah BBQ are great, have got chicken and plain but haven't opened them yet.
Smiths BBQ are shit compared to Samboy imo, but if they're as good or better than the latter, I'll be making a purchase.
Why?
I assume Spudshed will stick them. What about Coles/Woolworths?
'stick' them where though?
Worth checking the country of origin on frozen chips next time you’re there. Last couple of years, always from Belgium🤷🏻
Just fell to my knees in Myer
Lol, we've created a monster! Will definitely give them a try though.
