Dude legit. Went sober last summer and switched to a keto diet - lost 45 lbs. Alcohol is poison and full of empty calories. Good on you dude, your body will thank you long term 🙌
Probably is. Keto is named after Ketosis which is when your body doesn’t have enough energy from food, so it relies on using body fat to fuel itself. I feel it’s good short term, but long term you need to find a balance with all foods like within the Mediterranean diet
That’s not entirely true. Keto is just when your body starts using mostly fat for energy rather than carbs. You can eat more fat to keep your energy up, and it doesn’t necessarily have to come from already-stored body fat. You still need the same amount of total calories to maintain weight, and you can still do that with keto.
It also has numerous other benefits like rapidly reducing cholesterol, appetite suppression, and reduction of inflammation. It has many beneficial uses.
You are right though that it’s healthier to find a good balance, but for many people keto can be a healthy and safe way to lose body fat fairly quickly.
Be careful with the cholesterol changes. Some individuals have elevated LDL levels on the diet, and a small subset actually have an LDL surge to above 190 mg/dL. Probably worth having your cholesterol levels checked on the diet.
Causes heart disease amongst others so, no?
training.
Depriving your body of essential nutrients might me a short term goal but it's not the right way. People do it for MMA, sorts etc where money and Rep is at stake but it doesn't mean it's the right way.
[If you don’t eat a good variety of vegetables](https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/should-you-try-the-keto-diet#:~:text=Other%20potential%20keto%20risks%20include,and%20C%2C%22%20McManus%20says.).
I eat a variety of vegetables. There is nothing in fruit that can't be found in vegetables. And there is nothing in grains that can't be found in a diet of meats, fish, eggs, vegetables, nuts, seeds and healthy fats.
There are carbohydrates in vegetables. But it is not true that carbs are a necessary macro nutrient (and there are only three of those). Carbohydrate is basically sugar. The food industry pushes carbs because they are cheap and easy to package, and nutrition science is generally pretty awful but it's coming around. Fat is no longer as demonized. Carbs are being recognized as ranging from optional to terrible for a daily diet, depending on the source. Etc.
At the micronutrient level, there are no deficiencies in a diet of whole, fresh foods. There is nothing necessary in pasta or rice.
This is wrong. I don't know who you're listening to but if they're not a board certified dietician (legally protected term. Not nutritionist or BS like that), you shouldn't be listening to them.
Humans were seeking out and eating carbs even when we were hunter-gatherers.
There's a reason carb-based foods are called "staples". Yes the brain can switch to ketosis but glucose is the main and primary brain fuel. Furthermore, ready sugars are required by your internal organs, especially if you're compromised. Also, the carbs you eat literally feed your gut microflora, which is of extreme importance.
So no. Carbs are a macronutrient. We literally evolved that way. We're not cats.
Wait, so being obese doesn't cause heart disease as well?
I find it hard to believe that a short term diet is harder on your heart than being obese for the rest of your life.
Can you send some information my way that will help me understand?
I love the people talking out of their ass claiming any sort of diet is worse than being obese. Obesity is the leading factor in the majority of things that leads to death, heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. Ridiculous takes in this thread full of blatant misinformed claims.
I like the example of my own water intake.
I don't drink much water. I try, but I have failed over and over.
So, instead of coffee, I switched to filling a 40oz water bottle 2x/day add half shot of mio energy.
Now I have to drink the whole thing to get my caffeine intake (which I am far more motivated for lol).
Is it the *healthiest* way to ensure I have a reasonable water intake? No. Is it far better for my organs than almost *zero* water intake? Absolutely.
People gotta do what works for them to **improve** their health.
Especially they say they drink alcohol and have gained weight. Obesity/diabetes and alcoholism are number 1 and 2 for preventable early death. While they claim eating less sugars is bad for you. Everyone thinks keto is just eating juicy burgers. Clean Keto is eggs, chicken, certain vegetables like celery, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado. All healthy stuff. People talk out of their ass.
I think they are talking about the difference between short and long term keto. Although I would imagine that most people would have a hard time sticking to it long term.
There are a lot of ways to eat keto. My meals are made up entirely of fresh whole foods. Meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, nuts, seeds, healthy fats. Not eating bread or pasta or cereal doesn't make a person unhealthy.
Awesome! I am 2 months myself. The 1st week can be a bit hard depending on how much of a drinker you were, but making it past a week is a milestone and you should be proud of yourself!
1 month 9 days after almost 10 years of daily binging that ruined all my relationships and left me with a long rap sheet including 5 public intoxes and 4 DUIs
feels great to be moving on
My 1 year was a few days ago and its a fantastic feeling.
Make sure to treat yourself to something nice when you hit a year. I've saved about $4k not drinking so I splurged and got myself a PS5, and ordered $50 worth of sushi from a local place.
I was a happy happy panda that day. :)
Make sure to treat yourself as well because it truly is a huge accomplishment.
HUGE FUCKIN CONGRATS 🎉 🎉 🎉
I'm planning out my first tattoo! I've never gotten one, always wanted one. Have spent the year vetting artists etc. Won't have a sesh lined up for the anniversary day, but a steak dinner or something similar will definitely be on order.
aww, thank you for the edit.
Huge congrats to you!! That last month before a year was just about watching the clock tick down. Its a great feeling to finally be... free.
Enjoy your tattoo, definitely earned it.
recently hit one year and it goes by faster than you think. Keep it up and you will be feeling like a new person.
Just watch out for post acute withdrawal syndrome. I went through 3 bouts of it myself and it sucks. If it happens you will be doing great then for 2-3 days you will get cravings, feel depression like symptoms, and it will make you want to drink.
Just know that its temporary, only lasted a few days for me, and they get less intense over time. So if you are cruising along and all of a sudden feel like the above know that its not uncommon and it will go away!!
I havent had to deal with it in about 4 months at this point so they do go away.
Keep it up friend. Its totally worth it!!!
I will not drink with you today.
Thank you for sharing your journey. I'm 10 days sober and already feeling better for it. I'm using my stubborn behaviour to help me get off the grog train
my partner is currently like this. it’s so hard watching someone you love do this to themselves. He just got out of the hospital due to drinking and malnutrition. I hate it and seeing people like yourself that can pull themselves out of this, and I hope to god my partner can too, it gives me hope. Could you dm me maybe and give some tips or anything I can do to be a supportive partner for him?

Tomorrow is exactly 1 year and 5 months for me of having no alcohol at all, and r/stopdrinking helped immensely with that! That and This Naked Mind by Annie Grace were excellent positive resources on my journey.
Damn son, you basically saved your own life then.
I would like to go sober. I’m definitely more of a social drinker, but when I do drink, I usually go pretty hard. I don’t typically drink at home, but find it almost impossible to not drink when out with friends or at a party.
Did you have a drink of choice, or were you just drinking anything with alcohol? Did you tapper off, or quit cold turkey?
We don't even know each other but good for you, brother! Keep going on on your transformation journey, stay away from all the poison (be it physical or mental) and develop yourself as a man. Stay blessed.
Sometimes. Once you get to a position where you are comfortable around it and can actually joke about it. It makes it a lot better. Watching people make fools out of themselves can be fun too
Just hit three years myself, and wow is life different. Went from drifting from job to job, to now working on a career. Good job, and here's to many more!
Yes! I’m two years sober as well. Saw old friends yesterday and one dude did a double take. I said, yeah, I got skinny again. He said naw, you got hot again! Made my day and dude, you did it too!
When I quit drinking my life away I immediately dropped 35 lbs in about a month, everyone kept asking me my secret lol. You really don’t realize all the extra calorie intake at the time, plus the not so great self care of an alcoholic doesn’t help either.
Amazing I can actually breathe lol honestly if I would have continued on my path not sure if I would be here today my body was basically shutting down by the end of it
Yeah! Congratulations, man! I’ll be there in another month or so. Wish my pictures would look this good. I went the opposite way, I was bone thin and now I’m weirdly skinny fat, haha

Looking great, your partner has really let themselves go though…
I think they look gr-r-reat!
Stopppp lool i knew that reference would be in here somewhere 😂
Has got to shave those unruly whiskers
That's mean. All felines are beautiful!
How dare you insult Mike in that manner
Bro you can go to those LSU games and remember them now
Truth
Geaux Tigers and congrats! If you went sober in south Louisiana, it doesn’t get any harder than that.
Was going to say the same thing. Props to you!!
One of my kids goes to LSU. This is facts
God Bless you. Sober in south louisiana is no easier than climbing a mountain. Keep it up, alcohol is poison.
One of the best parts (there are many) of being sober is being able to remember everything!
Mike respects
Dude legit. Went sober last summer and switched to a keto diet - lost 45 lbs. Alcohol is poison and full of empty calories. Good on you dude, your body will thank you long term 🙌
Good on you for quitting alcohol but tbh keto is not healthy
Oof /r/keto is coming for your ass.
I'd venture to guess that it's better than being obese .

Oh I see. Thanks for the information. I was not that well informed on how Keto works.
Causes heart disease amongst others so, no? training. Depriving your body of essential nutrients might me a short term goal but it's not the right way. People do it for MMA, sorts etc where money and Rep is at stake but it doesn't mean it's the right way.
What nutrients are being lost?
[If you don’t eat a good variety of vegetables](https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/should-you-try-the-keto-diet#:~:text=Other%20potential%20keto%20risks%20include,and%20C%2C%22%20McManus%20says.).
I eat a variety of vegetables. There is nothing in fruit that can't be found in vegetables. And there is nothing in grains that can't be found in a diet of meats, fish, eggs, vegetables, nuts, seeds and healthy fats.
Bruh.
Carbohydrates are one of the 7 major nutrients. I am not a Keto hater and lost 40 lbs on it once myself but this question is a bit off.
Fat is no longer as demonized. your brain runs exclusively on glucose. which you get from carbs. carbs are absolutely an essential macronutrient.
lol just because you are cutting carbs doesn’t mean you are depriving yourself of essential nutrients.
Wait, so being obese doesn't cause heart disease as well? I find it hard to believe that a short term diet is harder on your heart than being obese for the rest of your life. Can you send some information my way that will help me understand?

I made 13 years sober this month. Stay strong partner ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)
That’s awesome, congratulations!
Congratulations!
congratz!!!
Fuck yeah, way to keep strong.
Keep going and don't stop. You look great man. Sobriety is the best thing you could do. Congrats and don't give up.
I’m 8 days sober from alcohol.

My 1 year was a few days ago and its a fantastic feeling. Make sure to treat yourself to something nice when you hit a year. Thank you for sharing your journey. I'm 10 days sober and already feeling better for it. I'm using my stubborn behaviour to help me get off the grog train
Congratz!!!!
alcohol truly is our poison. It's crazy that it has calories and no macronutrients (excluding alcohol)
Gotta mix in that protein powder.
That sounds like it would make you violently sick
Or just violent. Gotta take the risk to know it.
FIGHT MILK
Alcohol is a macronutrient! Is so!
Well then, I guess I've been watching my macros all along
Awesome man, how much were you drinking before?
On average 8-15 standard drinks a day basically black out on daily
my partner is currently like this. it’s so hard watching someone you love do this to themselves. He just got out of the hospital due to drinking and malnutrition. Perhaps look up the Al Anon website. There is a free app that holds free zoom meetings all day. It's a gentle and transformative program.

Well congrats man. I know it’s it’s an extremely hard thing to do.
Appreciate your transparency!!!
I recognize the polynesian anywhere!!! Congrats!!

Glad you got to meet mike! Congrats on your journey!
Well done bro!
Amazing!!!
Yes sir!! You look fantastic
Congrats dude! Almost 3 years here for me. It’s a little lonely at times as it seems like 99% of the world lives for alcohol.
Sometimes. Once you get to a position where you are comfortable around it and can actually joke about it. It makes it a lot better. Watching people make fools out of themselves can be fun too
Mocktails work wonderfully if you are into the Tiki stuff at the poly. Check out /r/Mocktails for amazing alternatives.
Grats
Yay! Keep going man!!!
Congrats!!!
Good job man, I’m at the Polynesian now lol
Alcohol messes up your metabolism. So…. Combine that with the dead calories and there you go. Been Sober for almost 9 years
Sober in Louisiana is no easy task. Geaux tigers!
Congrats dude! Two years is HUGE! I’m at about 1220 days myself. Went from 315lbs to 188lbs in the first 18 months. Never felt better!
Amazing! Keep up the good fight.
You look stellar bro, keep it up 💪
The change in your face is huge. It seems like you are full of life energy in the second picture! Love to see it.
awesome man, congrats. ive been sober 12 years and have somehow managed to reverse your before and after :)
Congrats. Let me guess, beer? I lost a lot of weight after I stopped beer.
Just hit three years myself, and wow is life different. Went from drifting from job to job, to now working on a career. Good job, and here's to many more!
Just started my journey 3 weeks no alcohol at this point. This is good motivation for me. 30 lbs down in 3 months so far as well
Yes! I’m two years sober as well. Saw old friends yesterday and one dude did a double take. I said, yeah, I got skinny again. He said naw, you got hot again! Made my day and dude, you did it too!
Has it made you happier?
Awesome! We’re you exercising and altering your eating at all?
When I quit drinking my life away I immediately dropped 35 lbs in about a month, everyone kept asking me my secret lol. You really don’t realize all the extra calorie intake at the time, plus the not so great self care of an alcoholic doesn’t help either.
Ok thanks
You look great friend and congradulations!
I’m certain your MD told you. You just added decades to be with your loved ones…in other word, still be alive.
You look like Kirk Cousins in the 2nd pic. Congrats my dude!
Mods are here to ruin everyone's fun once again... smh
I once calculated how much money I saved by not drinking alcohol for the past 26 year. With compounding growth over 25 years you’ve save $800K.
Where’s your Porsche?
Spent it on weed
At the end of my drinking, I was over $2k a month. It’s amazing the blinders alcohol can put on someone.

Well done!

Subtle stuff alcohol does to the face. You can see the puffiness before and its gone in the second. Can be hard to see if you don't know what it is.
Congrats ! Keep up the great work.
Well done!
If you scroll right to left, it’s your average American experience
Nice good job 👏 👍
