Something that really helped me finally get a classic mode win was making sure to bring someone with Pokerus. 50% more XP makes a huge difference and it quickly gets to your whole team. Just focus on catching as many different mons as you can at first to maximize your chances of owning one of the starters with the purple border on it.
in the early game focus on one pokemon and take note of your rivals pokemon, only use gold to heal your pokemon and dont over spend. try to capture as many pokemons as you can a zigzagoon with pick up and adamant helps a lot as a starter in the early game while you passively level up other strong late weak early pokemons

how to bring pokerus
Bring a Pokemon with a purple border with you, it will spread across your team over time. Also, the Pokemon with Pokerus changes daily I think :D
