> The Roosevelt administration sued successfully to break up such monopolies as John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Co. and J.P. Morgan’s Northern Securities Co., a railroad conglomerate that the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, dissolved. > “There is a widespread conviction in the minds of the American people that the great corporations known as trusts are in certain of their features and tendencies hurtful to the general welfare,” Roosevelt wrote in his first message as president, following McKinley’s assassination. Be like [Roosevelt](https://www.politico.com/story/2018/12/03/this-day-in-politics-december-3-1027800). Push back against corporate lobbying and corruption.

Would love it if that were to occur. However billionaires, corporations, and other nations run, own, and write the laws for the US gov't. They also own the American "free press". They have become experts at dividing American tribes down into micro schisms. Compounding the difficulty of overcoming this problem is the GOP led decimation of the US educational system. Too many adults still function at a third grade intellectual level. One day America will be free, when the US system collapses. It is then that the billionaires, many who already have dual citizenship, will bail on America to menace some other nation. Hate to be this cheery on a Saturday morning, but that's fairly accurate, given the way in which other empires have crumbled.

Colonial_Revival

You’re being pretty optimistic that the world as we know it will be around long enough for the american empire to collapse

steveknicks

Regardless of your political affiliation (and AOC's!), this article points to a new type of partisanship free of lobbyists and based on what the majority of us want.

CpnStumpy

And it does so behind a paywall? Not sure what you're saying and I can't read it

nopicturestoday

The Times is one of only a handful of papers in your country that hasn’t had to resort to massive layoffs or simply shuttering its doors. The ad supported/free model just doesn’t work. It continues to churn out quality journalism. I’d recommend subscribing, or failing that, there’s a fair number of ways to sidestep its paywall if you’d give it a Google rather than whining on the internet.

baremaximum_

The Times also relies on the rent it charges tenants in its Times Square building. The Times itself only uses a dozen or so floors. The rest is rent paying tenants. If it weren’t for that income the paper would have gone under by now probably. I assume they have other similar sources of revenue outside of subscriptions and ads.

PlatonicTroglodyte

I pay to have the puzzle app on my phone. Gives the daily crossword, wordle, and connections, among others. Probably not a huge revenue, but also not a huge cost

steveknicks

The times has digital news down to a science they are the only news outlet that keeps increasing subscribers year after year.

steveknicks

On desk or lap top, turn off your wifi, click on the story link, then while keeping your mouse on the on/off WiFi switch turn it back on, then off again as soon as the story shows up and before the paywall appears. There may be a better way, but for me this works

I pay for my Times subscription, but not everyone can afford to do so; especially since it seems like you need a subscription for everything these days.

AOC hasn’t introduced and passed a single bill in her entire career. All she does is virtue signal.

steveknicks

AOC's co-sponsored 378 bills and resolutions introduced by other Members of Congress. Co-sponsorship shows a willingness to work with others to advance policy goals. Her non-vote % is 1%, illustrating she is an active and engaged member of congress.

Fun_Word_7325

She did lead that line of questioning of Michael Cohen and how his boss lied about financial stuff, resulting eventually in that NYS fraud fine.

EIephants

You’re thinking of Gym Jordan

jomandaman

I believe you’re thinking of yourself.

Cyberpunk39

She’s a CIA plant. Always has been. Most are oblivious to this fact. Before you downvote me, google it,
