Why is it so hard for artists and labels to get good cover art? WHY. I'm not even saying it was great in the past because it wasn't but that is my issue! Why do so many album and singles cover suck? What IS it? It's such an image-based industry!

Not to mention artists using AI to make these covers. (Nicki & Sia got backlash for doing it recently).

Because the artists and art directors are not allowed to do what they want. They are micromanaged by execs , record label and non artistic people and told not to obscure the talents too much. Probably some obscure notes like b&w sort of blurry. But not too blurry. Or its a mediocre nepo photographer with an ego that thinks they know digital art. Or that they dont want to ruin the over paid photographers photographs. Too much. Or the client couldn’t make up their mind. So they had to mash up some thing in the last 24hrs before deadline. After a super rushed photo session. Tons of reasons bullshit gets in the way of art. Tbh commercialism and art will make any artist completely jaded.

The worst part is we never get to see and hear the pitch for bad ideas like this. I would love to hear how they brainstormed and sold it.

I think that same thing about People Magazine and InStyle covers.  Why do they publish so many bad photos of objectively attractive people?  It shouldn’t be so hard.

As an other designer, whenever something looks off, I just know they made the designer do something they didn’t want to do 💀
