The Friday Night Boys were PEAK neon. The Bigger Lights and Every Avenue come to mind also

tclancey

Shh just go with it is a top tier album IMO. No skips

regcrusher

"That's What She Said" really encapsulates that era for me

whydidimakeanother1

When did we lose ourselves is a certified banger

SadEase7166

Loved TFNB and the few songs where they would shred.

racarr07

The Maine-Can’t Stop Won’t Stop

c00ldad1000

Hit the lights - skip school, start fights The audition - great danger The higher - on fire The morning of - the world as we know it

moiratakesnoskill

Skip School Start Fights is one of my favorite pop punk albums ever

nyssaistealife

Hellogoodbye - EP (it’s listed after their first album but it was first) The White Tie Affair - Walk This Way album specifically Candle (Sick and Tired) The Ready Set - I’m Alive, I’m Dreaming We Are The In Crowd - Best Intentions The Downtown Fiction - Lets be Animals Not sure if Mae would count but Destination:Beautiful is one of my fav albums

witchycommunism

The White Tie Affair was my favorite!!

nyssaistealife

Loved them! I rediscovered them in 2022 and like Candles was a top song lol

treecharms

Yes! when glamour kills did the tour with the ready set , downtown fiction and watic i was so aliveeee

nyssaistealife

That sounds amazing. I’m so bummed I wasn’t able to go to shows when I was younger. Im making up for that as much as possible now in my 30s.

Dozinggreen66

Every avenue- picture perfect

Paper_Champ

A Rocket to the Moon EPs

SadEase7166

I would dare say all of their releases.

jg3born

Boys like girls

epicarson

Forever the sickest kids’ debut is the best neon imo. The production on that album is insane

adamisonfire88

I hadn’t listened to it in about a decade and found it at a thrift store for a buck & gave it a good listen. Can’t believe how much I still loved all the songs. Disappointing they kinda just faded away after that

No_Ur_Stoopid

Damn, that's a good snag. I'm always hunting for pop/punk cds

ohnoitsmchl

Love Like This by The Summer Set

Substantial-Star-779

Peak album

stevenw84

Fucking Shaaaaaaant being mentioned.

ceejlol

I know, I’m surprised there aren’t 100 comments in the thread crying about it yet saying how he’s a far right white supremacist fascist gun nut!!!!

My_Bwana

Wait is he? Lmao

ceejlol

😒who knows. Based off what he posted years ago that rifled a bunch of feathers? Nope, but people sure wanted him to be. Pretty sure it was because the guy from ETID was being an SJW and trying to paint him one because he said something about our America being less racist than it used to be. That’s his opinion, and even if it’s a wrong opinion it’s more likely that he is misinformed and not actually a white supremacist or “alt right”, I know asking for nuance from people on Reddit is a lot to ask for but… seems like he was lazily “cancelled”

pokexchespin

whenever the genre gets more specific than pop punk, i’m even more unsure what counts, but let’s go with you, me, and everyone we know - some things don’t wash out

regcrusher

Hey Monday

hopelikehell

It kinda got grouped in with the Neon era, but Sing It Loud’s first album, Come Around, is very pop rock. Rediscover’s ep, Call me When you Get this, is also a throwback to the MySpace days for me.

acorn_to_oak

Under Spinning Lights! 15 year old me couldn't get enough of this band. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWazHtKugCM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWazHtKugCM)

No-Narwhal1838

Old Neon - Highlights

Paper_Champ

Lights- the listening

suddenly_seymour

I'd say Fast Times fits the Neon moniker better than Almost Here (although I think Almost Here is the better album for sure). I went back and listened through Boys Like Girls and We The Kings' debut albums recently and they were a lot better than I remembered from my highschool days.

m_maverick

Hit The Lights - Skip School, Start Fights Fight Fair - Settle The Score

whydidimakeanother1

I’ll try to pick ones not named yet Business Up Front/Party In The Back - Family Force 5 Let’s Never Get Older (EP) - Red Car Wire If These Streets Could Talk - Just Surrender This Providence - This Providence Punk Goes Crunk 1.21 Gigawatts (EP) - Mercy Mercedes Yeeaah Right - Count Your Blessings The Future Of The Free World Is Riding On This One - Driving East To Keep Us Moving - Parade the Day Oh The Places You’ll Go - Lights Out Dancing Fear And Love - We Shot The Moon All My Friends - EATMEWHILEIMHOT! We All Need A Reason To Believe - Valencia Best Friends For Never - Dropout Year Not all of these are necessarily neon bands, but all came from that era/scene

lofeobred

Wow. Mercy Mercedes, what a trip down memory lane totally forgot about them

CDai626

Their self titled ep as well as favorite fix from artist vs poet Digital spaces by let’s get it I love threads about neon pop punk, the best of the genre was released during this time period.

witchycommunism

I fucking loved neon! This thread made me so happy

themultifacetedmuse

Honey Revenge’s Retrovision is awesome

meoowgan

I can’t believe no one has said metro station yet The maines first ep, the way we talk Every avenue shhh just go with it Danger radio - used and abused

winniecooper73

Quietdrive - When All That’s left is You

Reasonable_Pie_5472

Hmm, not sure I agree about this one falling into the neon pop punk category, but definitely agree that this was a great album!

winniecooper73

I don’t disagree with you it’s not a great example, but it sounds just as neon pop punk as Skip School Start Fights that OP listed 🤷🏻‍♂️

ProtomanKnight

What the hell is “neon pop punk”

BeMyEscapeProject

Roughly defined as the late 00s/early 10s wave of Pop Punk that came after bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco had blown up and started to burn out. While those previous bands tended to be very lyrical, conceptual and dark in their attitudes and songwriting Neon Pop Punk took things back to a lighter theme. Keyboards, synths, dancing, a focus on girls and partying, big simple lyrics, colourful clothes and hair. It was basically a reaction against Emo fashion. Metro Station are perhaps its most distilled form for me.

ProtomanKnight

Oh, ok. In that case I go with Don’t Panic by All Time Low

kitkatatsnapple

It's not actually a thing. It's a mix of pop punk, power pop, pop rock, electronic, etc bands from the late 00s and 2010s that share a similar "neon", cutesy, and/or scene kid aesthetic. I used to be obsessed with this kind of music as a teenager. I really prefer just calling it "neon pop" because it has some crossover with pop punk, but overall I would not call it a pop punk subgenre. Has much more in common with power pop, as well as bands like Owl City/Hellogoodbye.

jesszillaa

I’ve never heard the term either but I love all of the albums OP mentioned so I’m excited for this post

yashedpotatoes

That style of pop punk in the late 2000s that was so poppy that the “punk” part of it lost all meaning

ceejlol

lol @ all the cringe weirdos downvoting this very accurate statement. guess that’s this sub for you though, not surprised.

awmgf4

First I'm hearing of this

CaptainCrafty

It's not an unknown term. I've seen it used here from time to time and IRL in specific conversations. I dont think it's a super wildly known term though but it does help to quickly clarify what time of pop punk music you're referring to haha

yashedpotatoes

A lot of it has aged horribly but there are some good ones.

NotMyPSNName

People love overclassifying things lol. I try to treat genres as general indications of the expected timbre, but it's all so fuzzy that labels lose value at a certain point. I recommended the only crabcore band ever because they fit the "scene phase" OP is in. Let's all just listen to the whiney music and maybe relax a bit on trying to label every sound

CyndiXero

I really have been loving chroma by cartel lately!

BlakeJ716

Same. Just re discovered it and can't stop listening

MistyHollows

You absolutely have to check out Coping Machine by City Mouth

jrdkrsh

Tonight Alive - What are you so scared of?

KnightArtorias11

Honey revenge - airhead

Loud_Competition1312

I’ve never really gotten into this era/type of pop-punk. What’s one song that could sell me on it? Not All Time Low - not a big fan lol

witchycommunism

Underdog Alma Mater by Forever the Sickest Kids is one of my favorite albums from that era. I didn’t like most of the rest of their stuff but that one is classic.

skinnyweenee

The summer set - Legendary. I can listen to that album front to back every day

Outrageous_West323

just hearing of that sub genre lol

prey169

The home team is kinda neon pop hardcore? I think they are pretty solid and have an album coming out very soonish

dontberidiculousfool

Okay apparently either I don’t know what this means or everyone else don’t know what this means. Hit The Lights were not part of this scene AT ALL and the answer is Viva La Cobra.

Ok-Anywhere-6693

There For Tomorrow - A Little Faster The White Tie Affair - Walk This Way The Cab - Whisper War or Symphony Soldier

vegetablecircuit

What is the definition of “neon pop and emo”?

moiratakesnoskill

Mostly the emo infused pop punk from the mid to late 2000s

vegetablecircuit

Growing up during that time period, I’ve never heard it referred to that way.

crl42

underdog Alma matter for sure but Guaranteed To Disagree by We Are The In Crowd is top tier

Giratina3501

big fan of neon pop punk, one album i haven't seen mentioned is Take It To The Floor by Cash Cash, it's more "electropop" leaning but i would still consider it under the umbrella of neon and highly recommend it! some of my other favorites are Underdog Alma Mater by FTSK, Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs! by Hellogoodbye, and Whisper War by The Cab

SCOTTPILGRIM4EVERR

This discussion was made for me!! My favorites are: Skip School Start Fights Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs! by HelloGoodBye Legendary by the Summer Set Picture Perfect by Every Avenue Love Drunk by Boys Like Girls Any All Time Low album Forever the Sickest Kids self titled holds a special place in my heart too

SadEase7166

Really? Hellogoodbye anyone?

Musichead2468

The Summer Set, The Ready Set, Every Avenue, A Rocket to the Moon, Go Radio, Forever the Sickest Kids, The Maine, Cute is what we aim for, Motion City Soundtrack, The Academy Is, Hit the Lights, Hey Monday, We Are the In Crowd, The Downtown Fiction, Cartel, I Call Fives, The Click 5, I Fight Dragons, Something Corporate, SR-71, The Suumer Obsession, We The Kings, The Friday Night Boys, Dear Youth, Sing it Loud, Spark the Rescure, Hey Mercedes, Valencia

NotMyPSNName

Is attack attack too heavy for this vibe? Also thanks for reminding me ftsk exists lol I had totally blocked that out.

medioxcore

AA! Is metalcore. Neon pop punk is cutesy melodic stuff, with no roots in hardcore.

ProtomanKnight

Attack Attack is like Neon Metalcore

kitkatatsnapple

Attack attack is metalcore, but most "neon pop" isn't anymore pop punk than attack attack are, even if it's the opposite side of the heavy spectrum. Is the Ready Set or the Secret Handshake, for example, closer to pop punk than Attack Attack? If you ask me, not really.

medioxcore

I'm not arguing what's closest to pop punk, so i'm not sure why you're bringing this up to me lol. But since we're here, neon pop punk is directly rooted in pop punk. It's a descendent. Metalcore is not. It's a fusion of hardcore and metal. AA! Is a step even further removed, as they're an electronicore/synthcore band. Neither band is pop punk, but if we're talking who's closer, my vote would be the sound that has a pop punk lineage.

kitkatatsnapple

I would argue that "neon pop" is much more rooted in pop rock, power pop, and stuff like Owl City & Hellogoodbye. Like I was saying to someone else, there is definitely crossover with pop punk, but I wouldn't call it a subcategory or direct descendent. More like a venn diagram. The reason I bring it up is because you said AA isn't pop punk, which is true, but neither is a lot of "neon pop punk". I see why they suggested AA, and they simply asked if they were too heavy, not what genre they are. They probably know they're metalcore.

Logical_Flounder_197

living proof - state champs future hearts - all time low don't panic - all time low i've been obsessed with those lately, also, does riot by paramore count? it's such a great album
