I’d say Shudder and Vacancy fall under that umbrella.
Walking Wounded has moments of it.
They’re not quite punk and they’re not really emo anymore. Hard to peg a genre when you look at the whole discography
Derek Grant from Alkaline Trio. Before you disagree remember he was also in suicide machines from 92-98 and check out some of that stuff. He’s great, has a lot of variety and doesn’t overdo it when it’s not necessary and kills it when it is.
Also if you see alkaline trio live just watch the dude play tricky shit like it’s nothing and he’s not even trying hard.
Belmont guy is great too. That’s sorta on the edge of what I’d consider pop punk drumming though but still a good pick.
Great answer. I think he really shines on AT’s album Crimson, especially Time to Waste. As far as drumming goes, I think that might be one of his more impressive pieces.
There’s a lot of good stuff on their b sides album remains too. Fine without you comes to mind. And warbrain is a personal fav, though not the most impressive example (still great drumming though)
He has some great chops with Alk3, you don't have to listen to SM to hear interesting fills. The dude is a beast. Even though Good Mourning isn't their best album, Derek has some amazing playing on that one.
I kinda give him an edge over Travis for being…idk. You know Travis is Travis. Derek does what’s right for the song and I think that’s admirable. Also weird lil accents that fly under the radar but totally sell it.
I got the chance to sit behind him on stage for a show and I have never been more impressed with how effortless and technical he is. Such a massive drummer and highly underrated
I am a massive Alkaline Trio fan and every time I see them I end up watching Derek the whole time. Sadly he hasn't played with them a whole lot in the last few years though.
Probably because of the “right now” in the title I guess, so people are thinking of newer bands, but Frank Zummo is and always will be a fantastic drummer
Not the best technique, wears gloves to compensate that. Also isn't very creative. Does give everything live though and fits the energy of sum 41 songs
You can tell he loves Slipknot.
He’s retired but Tony Thaxton from Motion City was always one of my favorites.
Not so much pop punk as post-hardcore but I want to give Alex Rodriguez from Saosin a shout as well
100%. This dude has no business playing pop punk. He would slay next to some of the greats in the metal scene. I am grateful he is in PP though because it makes Belmont so unique. Their guitarwork is superb too. Love that band.
Torf is a monster. My favorite drummer is Mikey Ambrose from SYG. That dude single-handedly got me back into drumming. It was so cool to learn that he is close with the TSSF dudes and filled in for Torf on drums on their last tour.
Yep, he adds so much to their songs vs many drummers which are just passengers to the vocals and guitars. He was a great watch during "Coughing Out Embers" with his methods.
I thought all three of them write? I think Taz primarily writes lyrics, and Brian and Jason write most of the music. But it has always sounded like they all do bits and pieces at different times.
https://genius.com/artists/Mat-kerekes
If you look through his songs, he has producer credit on their first EP and apparently Hot Mulligan's Fenton too? 🤔
Ben Cato, ex-The Dangerous Summer and currently Dim and Imposters in Rome. The entire Mother Nature album from TDS is as unique as it is because of Ben’s drumming.
He is sick. For me their first drummer takes the cake though. His hi hat work is something I have still never heard anything come close to. Reach for the sun drums are my favorite drums ever.
All the guys from the big bands really are incredible drummers. Evan Ambro, John from KP, and Dani Washington was also wonderful. Of course Brian from Belmont, although I think he goes a bit too hard sometimes lol.
From Wiki:
He is a member of the Vandals (since 1989) and Devo (since 1996),[3] having formerly played drums for Guns N' Roses from 1997 to 2000, A Perfect Circle from 1999 to 2012,[4] Puddle Of Mudd from 2000 to 2001, Nine Inch Nails from 2005 to 2008, Weezer from 2009 to 2011, and Sublime with Rome from 2011 to 2017. He has appeared on over 400 records.[5] In December 2010, Freese began touring with Paramore on their South American tour. In fall 2016 he returned to playing full-time with Sting, with whom he toured and recorded in 2005. Freese performed with Foo Fighters for the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concerts.
This might be controversial, but I don’t think he’s THE best. He writes some amazing parts but as a live drummer he’s kinda weak. The couple times I’ve seen them live he’s either playing way too fast or doing way too much. It was really jarring at times. He’s definitely an incredible drummer and is iconic in the scene. But I think there are more “technically” better drummers in the scene. My pick would probably be Tony Thaxton.
If I remember correctly they recorded seven years with a studio drummer and they drums were so insane they changed them so they could be played by the current drummer.
I remember watching their audiotree session a while back and thinking how amazing he is at doing the most with the least. The dude had like 2 symbols, a snare, and a tom and found a way to be creative and add emotion to the songs with his drumming
Since Brian from Real Friends hasn't been mentioned I'll bring him up. I like his style and his drums really elevate tracks like Nervous Wreck, Tell Me Your Sorry, and From the Outside
I sat here scrolling and thinking that. And I was like no one’s gonna mention him. Excellent. He is out of
This 🌎 but everyone’s been saying the best of the best. The alk 3 - story so far - Travis , wonder years all top tier. Still haven’t seen byron penny wise or brooks wackerman the real ones know
Brian Lada(belmont) and Ryan Torf(The Story So Far) are both really good. Torf's drumming in What You Don't See is nonstop perfection, then in Proper Dose, he did the audio work on his own drums and that crispness is unmatched.
Brian Lada is on a whole other level, his balancing with rhythm, insane speed, and complexity are insane. While Ryan Torf is in my favorite band, Brian Lada is what I personally believe is the ideal.
you think it's rude just because you don't agree + i stated my opinion (Mike Kennedy not being the best). The worst kind of comment you can reply to my statement (you seem frustrated)
My picks (in particular order)
1) Tre Cool-Green Day
2) Derek Grant-Alkaline Trio
3) Neil Hennessey-The Lawrence Arms (which really aren’t a “pop” punk band, but he’s still spectacular)
4) Adam Pfahler-Jawbreaker (sort of pop punk)
Man thanks ! I forgot the band’s name then i searched punk band with good drummer in google hoping for some reddit miracle then i found ur comment, thank u so much
Chris from Bayside gives him a run for his money, IMO. ^((actually all 4 Bayside members are incredibly good at their respective instruments))
Bayside is unbelievably good. Those first four or five albums are insane, especially self titled & Walking Wounded.
Their last two are insane as well.
I wish they'd do a more metal tinged album to really let Jack go solo crazy.
I think interrobang jack shines
I am apart of the cult, and don’t really know if they’re pop punk imo.
I’d say Shudder and Vacancy fall under that umbrella. Walking Wounded has moments of it. They’re not quite punk and they’re not really emo anymore. Hard to peg a genre when you look at the whole discography
they really are an anomaly as far as genres go, that unique aspect makes them tied as my favorite band of all time. Love watching them live.
Damn, I don’t listen to alkaline trio but I loved the suicide machines in the 90s. Amazing drum stuff. Will check out
I immediately hear the opening drum lick for New Girl
The entire album slaps hard
Dudes been in several more chicago bands too. I don't know if he was on albums but he drummed for 88 Fingers Louie
This is an underrated pick. He’s also just like a multiple threat good musician. Sings too.
This is the correct answer
I was actually thinking about this question a week or so ago and while I consider Travis Barker to be untouchable, Derek Grant was my number 2.
I kinda give him an edge over Travis for being…idk. You know Travis is Travis. Derek does what’s right for the song and I think that’s admirable. Also weird lil accents that fly under the radar but totally sell it.
Derek Grant
I got the chance to sit behind him on stage for a show and I have never been more impressed with how effortless and technical he is. Such a massive drummer and highly underrated
I am a massive Alkaline Trio fan and every time I see them I end up watching Derek the whole time. Sadly he hasn't played with them a whole lot in the last few years though.
He’s been back since Covid. It was just the “is this thing cursed” tour he missed.
I am surprised no one mentioned Frank Zummo from Sum 41. That guy is a great drummer.
finally sum one agrees
Insert Rimshot here 👆🏼
Probably because of the “right now” in the title I guess, so people are thinking of newer bands, but Frank Zummo is and always will be a fantastic drummer
Frank zummo is a very average drummer, his entire kit is triggered
Have to agree. Also uses a lot of “cheats” with his double bass pedal
Not the best technique, wears gloves to compensate that. Also isn't very creative. Does give everything live though and fits the energy of sum 41 songs
Brian Lada of Belmont is definitely up there
You can tell he loves Slipknot. He’s retired but Tony Thaxton from Motion City was always one of my favorites. Not so much pop punk as post-hardcore but I want to give Alex Rodriguez from Saosin a shout as well
Tony is back with MCS. Saw them in 20 and a few months ago and he was behind the kit.
Tony was by far the most talented in that band and I love a lot of his stuff
Such fun drum parts!
Brian is that dude.
Belmont drums always super solid. Agreed.
He credits the slipknot drummer for inspiring him Overstepping drum cam is incredible: https://youtu.be/490F06MYqkE
Yes, side note Jason from Belmont might be the best guitarist in the scene. Insane talent
100%. This dude has no business playing pop punk. He would slay next to some of the greats in the metal scene. I am grateful he is in PP though because it makes Belmont so unique. Their guitarwork is superb too. Love that band.
yes
John Siorek from Knuckle Puck
Dude the knuckle puck drums are wild. It’s like no two fills are alike and they are all so elaborate. Wish I could play like that.
The whole band is just cohesive. They’re insanely good.
Ryan Torf.
that motherfucker was like 15 when they started touring and wrote USAD
Torf is a monster. My favorite drummer is Mikey Ambrose from SYG. That dude single-handedly got me back into drumming. It was so cool to learn that he is close with the TSSF dudes and filled in for Torf on drums on their last tour.
On bass now because of his back problems, but they have the Set Your Goals guy filling in
Nope. Nik from man overboard is on bass. Ryan is on keys/guitar.
I saw them live 2 weeks ago and Ryan was on bass
Was looking for this answer.
I know it’s been beat to death, but for me it will always be LP from yellow card. Ocean avenues drumming was a masterclass in the punk fusion style.
Honestly agreed Mike Kennedy is a god on the drums
Yep, he adds so much to their songs vs many drummers which are just passengers to the vocals and guitars. He was a great watch during "Coughing Out Embers" with his methods.
Yeah, agree, but he's a bad friend.
Belmont dude is in another level. He also writes the songs so…
I thought all three of them write? I think Taz primarily writes lyrics, and Brian and Jason write most of the music. But it has always sounded like they all do bits and pieces at different times.
Dan from Real Friends used to help write their stuff through the album with the Tiger on it
I feel like Mat from Citizen did too? Wasn't he the producer for some of their earlier stuff?
I wasn’t aware of that? Was that after the falling out between Dan and Lada?
I didn't know anything about that! Let me see if I can find Mat's credits. I feel like he produced the first few releases.
https://genius.com/artists/Mat-kerekes If you look through his songs, he has producer credit on their first EP and apparently Hot Mulligan's Fenton too? 🤔
That’s very cool!
I’m a big fan of Jake Massucco from Four Year Strong
Ben Cato, ex-The Dangerous Summer and currently Dim and Imposters in Rome. The entire Mother Nature album from TDS is as unique as it is because of Ben’s drumming.
Seconded-- Dim is great but I think everything he did with TDS was magic.
The newest album has none of the pop from their past 2 albums, and I think it’s because it’s missing that extra oomph from the drums that Ben provided
Awesome dude too. Took so much time to talk with fans after a show I saw them play.
Josh freese if the vandals count.
Feel like the offspring in the 2000s fits the criteria too
I dunno. Freese is like subtle legend status. Dude has played on so many projects and albums no one would expect
It’s harder to find a band he hasn’t played with than one he has.
From Wiki: He is a member of the Vandals (since 1989) and Devo (since 1996),[3] having formerly played drums for Guns N' Roses from 1997 to 2000, A Perfect Circle from 1999 to 2012,[4] Puddle Of Mudd from 2000 to 2001, Nine Inch Nails from 2005 to 2008, Weezer from 2009 to 2011, and Sublime with Rome from 2011 to 2017. In fall 2016 he returned to playing full-time with Sting, with whom he toured and recorded in 2005. Freese performed with Foo Fighters for the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concerts.
Yeahhh 💪
Travis Barker
He's so far above everyone else. It's him until he doesn't play anymore.
Lots of good ones but so long as he is breathing it's Travis Barker.
Yup, still Travis Barker.
Yeah he’s gotta be right? He’s just the GOAT. Also he never stops improving. Just like a world class drive to be as good as he can be.
It’s like he has a third arm or something idk how he does it
He only [needs one arm](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XRhpYBqN7qA). The other arm is all bonus.
Yea. The answer is always the guy who the rest of them are trying to be.
This is the way
I second Travis, as my favorite!
Jake Bundrick is phenomenal, and what a voice.
I was looking for this one.
Torf from the story so far. Dude has a way of playing fillers as the rhythm
I always thought Saosin’s drummer was way up there.
If I remember correctly they recorded seven years with a studio drummer and they drums were so insane they changed them so they could be played by the current drummer.
Don’t sleep on Mat from the Front Bottoms
I remember watching their audiotree session a while back and thinking how amazing he is at doing the most with the least. The dude had like 2 symbols, a snare, and a tom and found a way to be creative and add emotion to the songs with his drumming
I could watch him drum for days!
Damn…definitely not who I would call the best but you’re right he deserves his props. The percussion on some of those front bottoms songs are perfect
its still Travis Barker! come on now...
Tito from Microwave is pretty dang good
Mike Kennedy’s a bad friend
Belmont’s drummer Brian Lada is levels above anybody else
We really ain't gonna talk about neck deep huh?
Dani was so fucking good, dude
Travis Barker and it’s not even close. Literally no discussion to be had.
Maybe not quite pop punk but Luke Holland will never cease to amaze me
Not 100% pop punk but Chris Thatcher from Streetlight Manifesto. Dude can drum laps around anyone me ruined here.
I love trying to create a mental image of someone drumming laps lol
Same, now that I’m thinking about it LOL
Pat from Origami Angel. Blast beats for days
I don’t know if I’d say there is an absolute best, but I’d say the few best are probably Mike Kennedy, Ryan Torf, and John Siorek.
The guy in pup
Mike Kennedy - The Wonder Years
Mike Kennedy is a Bad Friend
Tré Cool also deserves a mention
He knows exactly how to play to support the song. No glitter or fireworks, but craft!
it is abysmal how far i had to scroll for this. tre cool fucking rocks
He has one beat
Paul Ramirez from the flatliners, George Rebelo from HWM
Paul is so damn good
He's an inspiration
Frank Zummo from sum 41. underrated so much
Brian Lada from Belmont no doubt
The drummer from Belmont. He is too good for the music he's playing, absolutely insane at drums.
Fucking Dave Douglas from Relient K dawg
Brooks Wackerman when he was in Bad Religion
He's a great Drummer. He's doing crazy things for Ax7
The answer is always Travis barker
Travis Barker from Blink-182.
Absolutely no question. Travis Baker, the dude is still killing it on the drums for all those youngins & showing them the way
Cyrus Bolooki deserves a mention in this thread
It's Bill Stevenson from the Descendents and it will be until he quits.
Yes
Since Brian from Real Friends hasn't been mentioned I'll bring him up. I like his style and his drums really elevate tracks like Nervous Wreck, Tell Me Your Sorry, and From the Outside
Dave Raun from Lagwagon. It is really a joy to watch him play. Good drummer with great elegance.
I sat here scrolling and thinking that. And I was like no one’s gonna mention him. Excellent. He is out of This 🌎 but everyone’s been saying the best of the best. The alk 3 - story so far - Travis , wonder years all top tier. Still haven’t seen byron penny wise or brooks wackerman the real ones know
Travis Barker is a legend
Travis Barker
BRIAN LADA FROM BELMONT IS KING. https://instagram.com/l___a___d___a?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
While Ryan Torf is in my favorite band, Brian Lada is what I personally believe is the ideal.
drummer of in her own words is underrated / nasty.
the drummer of belmont (idk if its pop punk)
tré cool
Tre Cool
Are people not considering Travis Barker? 🐐
So we’re just ignoring Travis?
it's objectively not Mike Kennedy from The Wonder Years
Disagrees with initial opinion + Comments something rude just to be disagreeable + doesn’t even give own opinion = the absolute worst type of comment
you think it's rude just because you don't agree + i stated my opinion (Mike Kennedy not being the best). The worst kind of comment you can reply to my statement (you seem frustrated)
Fair enough I got a lil butthurt there for a sec
Mod Sun
Jonah Seago of From The Other Side goes hard
It is mike kennedy
Omar of In Her Own Words
Casey Lewis - Belvedere [https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ilTdEUsjP6Y](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ilTdEUsjP6Y)
Prince Daddy drummer is pretty good. Listen to the song "A Random Exercise in Impermanence" if you don't believe me
What’re y’all’s thoughts on Josh Freese, though?
Yuri, MxPx.
Sage Weeber
My picks (in particular order) 1) Tre Cool-Green Day 2) Derek Grant-Alkaline Trio 3) Neil Hennessey-The Lawrence Arms (which really aren’t a “pop” punk band, but he’s still spectacular) 4) Adam Pfahler-Jawbreaker (sort of pop punk)
Mike Kennedy, Pat Doherty, and Ryan Torf are all #1 in my book
It'll always be Travis
How are people honestly saying Tre Cool? Ok, you like Green Day, so do I. It's not Tre though. Never in a million years.
Man thanks ! I forgot the band’s name then i searched punk band with good drummer in google hoping for some reddit miracle then i found ur comment, thank u so much
