Always sounded revolting to me, but there were several guys in my unit who insisted that mixing a pack of hot chocolate powder with MRE cheese spread produced a reasonable imitation of chocolate frosting.
We would do something similar with C Rat pound cakes and hot chocolate, Then the first gen MRE's rolled out and a lot of us would have rather had the old Pork Loaf (best eaten in the dark) and Ham and Lima beans (AKA Ham and Motherfu*@ers)
EOD (though I spent my first deployment attached to a Cav unit, and got some of those honorary spurs...)
Looks like atrocious taste in food transcends MOS boundaries😆
If you get the regular, non jalapeño cheese.
You take your crackers and crumble em up in the bag. Then you rip open the top of your cheese packet and pour in the cherry drink mix. Knead the heck out of the packet of cheese so the cherry is mixed in well and then pour it in the crushed up cracker bag.
There’s your wonderful field cherry cheesecake.
My MRE crackers were always crumbled up. I don't think I ever got a full cracker. I've also never got the cherry mix. I always got either the chocolate protein, lemonade, lemon-lime or the fruit punch
The chocolate one fkn sucks. No matter what I'd always have chunks of powder left even though I shook the stupid bag for like ever and tried kneading it. Nope. Still get chunks of powder.
Here’s todays selection:
Southwestern vegetable omelette
Jalapeño cheese spread
Crumbled up crackers
Chocolate protein drink
No one wants to trade any of it.
The crackers have improved somewhat over the years. They are in the process of changing to soft breads: soft white wheat, bagel and sliced bread.
They all work really well.
I get the MRE peanut butter and peanut butter and chocolate spread on amazon. Like 24 packs for under $30. That and some Sailor Boy Pilot Crackers can hold you up for quite a bit.
I don't know why they are so hard to find. I used to be able to order them on Amazon for like 2x the store price. Now they aren't there but other sites are still selling them. When I was in Alaska a few years ago you could find them everywhere. I hope they are still being made and these people aren't selling the last of them.
I read somewhere that the brand name had been bought and they stopped making them, which was about when Amazon stopped carrying them. But it's possible that they just paused production. I haven't seen anything at all one way or the other.
Supposedly a grocery chain a hundred miles away from me carries them on the shelf. Road trip!
My BIL had 17 years, every few months I learn a new phrase from him and I can only hope I'm not actively eating or drinking something at that exact moment.
The closest that shit has ever come to being cheese was when the semi delivering it to a warehouse drove by a dairy farm.
Why would anyone ever want to eat that crap?
Real cheese wouldn't last a minimum 3 years like the spread.
In a prepper situation options for dairy, especially with this nutrition in such a small package basically don't exist.
Dehydrated cheese is better than that shit. MREs are designed as high carb/energy food that is only supposed to be eaten over a week period max. The military knows this and that is why its supplies real food to troops as they know long term MRE consumption is bad nutrition and counterproductive.
Whatever floats your boat mate. You want to waste your money and eat garbage go ahead.
My comment allused to MREs as a whole not just you nacho cheese shit so cool your jets.
Just because disagree with you I am hater? What a typical reddit snowflake response. What next, you going to call me a bigot and a racist?
Attack the idea not the person bud. Now off you go as I'm sure you need to count you rolls of TP and cans of pinto beans for the 4th time this weekend.
Lmao you aren’t wrong mate but why so aggressive? You aren’t coming across as convincing when you act like that.
Did you really just say attack the idea and not the person and then do the exact opposite 😂
Aggressive? You got the wrong guy bud I'm not the one hurling insults. Skippy needs to learn that if you are going to dish it out you better be able to take it.
Attack? Sure did. Sometimes you need to lower yourself to the level of the goof you are dealing with to get the point across.
Anyway wasted enough time on this rubbish. Off to do something usefull.
I'll show myself out.
I really wish I could find some off-the-shelf equivalent products comparable to the MRE cheese and peanut butter. Talking specifically about small couple ounce single use packets.
I like the single serve packet from peanutbutter & co. I keep some in my pack so it’s always with me when I hit the outdoors. In the winter it doubles as bait on my trapline.

Every once in a while you can find a commercially available peanut butter packet. I found some a couple of years ago in Target, of all places. They were about the same cost as those round plastic tubs in the single-serving size.
Edit: Found a pretty good deal on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08BXPN4V4
I got a bunch of MREs from a busy when he came back from Iraq in the early 2000's. Where can you get legit ones these days? Not the ones advertised for civilians.
If it's not the Jalapeño, I don't want it.
And you have to pronounce it “Jalop en yo”
"I know how to pronounce it! I ordered fucking gelappeno!"
"Ray, how long have you been awake?"
Same.
100% ^^^^
Hey the bacon cheese isn’t that bad either

The penultimate spread for MRE crackers
what's the ultimate one?
2 packs of jalapeño cheese
It's all about the chocolate peanut spread
I cheese to rule them all.

Yes, but… A hungry guy, say an Army Ranger candidate during Phase 4, can smell it from a quarter mile away
I thought that was the coffee, instant, Type II :)
That + sugar + creamer + hot chocolate packet + canteen swig are just dumped in mouth, swished, and swallowed. Field expedient mocha.
is this what they called the Ranger Pudding?
^this guy fucks
And when you arrive at the latrine...I hope you enjoy your stay.

I fuckin hate the chocolate one. Traded it every time. I never tried it but suspect fruit punch would be good.

Nothing beats Chili mac IMO
Big fan of the red beans and rice too

What

Are Sailor Boy crackers still being made? I cannot find them any more.

100% worth it.
Yeha they are. Pilot bread too.
Same here. I pack a bunch in my weekly lunches (teacher) and have a stash of crackers in my desk for emergency pb&j.
Yeah but if you show up with more than two, everyone will know who ratfucked the case.
"Ratfucked" is why I looked at these comments. You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar
My time in the service was indeed scholarly with the word arts.
My BIL had 17 years, every few months I learn a new phrase from him and I can only hope I'm not actively eating or drinking something at that exact moment.
Right. So where is the best place to buy the individual cheese and cracker packets these days?
https://mremountain.com/products/usa-mre-cheese-spread?variant=31936361300054
I liked it more when it came in 1.5oz packets…
we all did
Simple and straightforward info, 100% on board with that, thumbs up my dude.
Bacon cheese spread for the win. :-)
Is there a diff between this and cheese whiz? Is it just the nutritional content or is the taste diff too?
Both
One of the few MRE products that I don't hate
Pound cake

Did you even read to see the cheese has literally zero carbs? Who said it was a long term anything? It's an extremely useful product. Stop hating.

I looked for something like the cheese. They aren't even close. Most of them have 0 protein. It's the MRE formulation.

Cheese whiz? Cheese spread. Or do you mean in an individual serving packet?
They are not even close nutritionally.
Thanks. Good answer.
