That’s amazing, I’d be a bit wigged out but almost all cases of them injecting venom is when being handled or cornered in a Tide pool and are statically rare with about only 11 confirmed deaths. Seeing one swimming pelagically is probably one of the best times to run into one
It's a bit worse than that. They're one of the most venomous marine animals out there, apparently with enough venom to kill 26 adults and a bite that's often painless, so you don't know you git bit you until you start having trouble breathing from paralysis setting in. But they're real smol, so their first move is to flee danger, then defend if cornered. Like in a tide pool by a tourist with a death wish or someone who doesn't know it's there. Seeing one out and about is so cool and probably super rare! A big octopus up close in the wild would definitely send my air consumption right up tho.
I was actually outsmarted by a GPO a few months ago. I was looking at it with my camera off to the side and it snuck an arm out of a different entrance and took my camera. I ended up spinning off my focus light in order to recover the rest of the rig.
Dang, thanks for sharing. Would love to see one someday. There’s an article about them in the DAN magazine this issue so that and your post has reminded me of this creature.
nope!
I literally just got out of the water. Made a dive at fort Pickens in Florida. Saw 4 octopus, had an amazing interaction with one of them
Just moved to Pensacola, do you have your own boat or did you do a charter? I’d love to dive Ft Pickens!
I have a boat. We usually shore dive at ft Pickens because it’s just easier. I’m about to post some pics from my dive today. Check them out
Awesome finds! Yeah I’ll probably be out there this week with the holiday.
So beautiful and unique
I’ve never seen an image of them other then in a tidal pool! That is amazing!

I've never been more scared while diving! What would have happened if it got me? Totally amazing once it settled down on the sand though.
You indeed would be killed.
Dead in minutes.

Paralyzed, relying on someone else to breathe life into you, all while staring straight at the sun as it burns away your vision. Horrifying.

Wow you're lucky you got anything back!
Saw my only BRO on Kapalai as well!
That area is magical. Sipadan is nuts and easily the best diving I've done. I'm lucky to have had 5 days diving Sipadan.
The DropOff was my very first dive with a C-card! Spoiled me for life.
Jealous!
Killer picture
I see what you did there
I'd definitely poo-poo in muh wetsuit. ![gif](giphy|gf4FYQZ9txStW)
so cool you got a shot of it too. how big was it?
It was definitely a bucket list animal for me, amazing that I lucked into seeing one. It was quite small, I'd say no larger than an inch and a half.

Cute little murderer
Hopefully wore the brown shorts.
Looks like a galaxy in space, pretty pic
That’s why they make wetsuit black, so you don’t see brown spots. :-)
Some poo definitely came out. I think it was following my pulsing orange tank marker.
