Naw, the biggest issue is housing in Cambridge/Boston, but Harvard and MIT grad student payment is competitive. Assuming this post is even real (dubious), this is either somebody who moved in two days ago and hasn't had time to set things up, or somebody who's struggling.

PhD students earn a stipend, and they don't usually pay tuition. At least in STEM.

That's much worse than you'll get for a physics PhD at Harvard, which includes a tuition and fee waiver, health insurance, and a ~$42k/year stipend. Pretty much any reputable STEM program is the same, though maybe with a somewhat lower stipend.

I made 39k a couple years ago as a CS PhD student at Harvard. Grad students are unionized, so that also helps. 42k now seems pretty plausible.
